It doesn’t NEED one but I would 100 percent use it for anything u connect to PC. https://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Xbox-Wireless-Adapter-Windows-Packaging/dp/B0785SFKYF/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=xbox+adapter+for+pc&qid=1603831096&sprefix=xbox+ad&sr=8-3
Bluetooth in the pc isn’t the best bc it was designed for Microsoft proprietary Bluetooth. Just buy that dongle and then it will act like a sync button that your Xbox uses. U can connect your headset and controller to your pc wirelessly. Instead of sync to your console, you’ll sync to that dongle plugged in to your pc

Why don't you just get the dongle?

We use an adapter for the main PC and a long micro USB cable for the 2nd one, since multiple adapters don't seem to play well together in the same room for some reason.

If it came with a cable, you can just plug it in. Otherwise, you could find a cable that fits the port at the top, or pick up one of these to connect wirelessly.

I too have experienced this issue. The only solution I can offer is buying the Microsoft Xbox One Wireless Adapter for Windows. I have three of them and they work flawlessly. I personally believe Windows 10 does not handle Bluetooth all that well.

This one specifically is what I use.

What kind of adapters are you using specifically?
The Xbox One controller works best with the official xbox one wireless adapter.

I use this adapter and plug it into whatever PC I want to her my Xbox one controllers on. Has really good range too I play across the room. Also lets me plug in ear buds or a headset into it and the PC will broadcast microphone and sound just like it does Xbox.
Xbox make the best and most affordable controllers so it's worth it. Otherwise you gotta plug the controller into the laptop.
After that you gotta watch a video on how to setup the controllers to ffxi. Only takes like ten seconds. Windows 10 also has an app for the controllers to change buttons and configs.

Did you try using the controller with the same bluetooth dongle on your Windows notebook?
One definite solution is to buy the dongle from Microsoft. It is fairly inexpensive and works great. https://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Xbox-Wireless-Adapter-Windows-Packaging/dp/B0785SFKYF/ref=sr_1_3

Yep, you can indeed connect to your pc via usb-c or Bluetooth, though Bluetooth can be unreliable.
Personally, I use this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0785SFKYF?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title
And hook up wirelessly

For the Xbox One controller you said it only works wired. Are you trying to use it over Bluetooth or with the official adapter.
For me, Bluetooth has always been a mixed bag on both Windows and Linux (though it seems to work great on my Macbook and Apple TV). Older Xbox One controllers don't support Bluetooth at all.
xow is a relatively new driver that supports the official wireless adapter and it works wonderfully with all my Xbox One controllers. They pair super fast, and get about double the range I see with Bluetooth. It even goes through my floor without issues when I want to stream games to my TV without re-pairing my controller to my Apple TV.

Yeah, they're only sold separately as far as I know. You can find them on Amazon.

I bought this (seems to be identical to the one you liked just with frustration free packaging): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0785SFKYF/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
and i was able to connect a controller to it while testing the dongle to make sure it worked. i cant get the arctis 9x to connect to it. every time i press the pair button then turn the headset on, it just turns on and pairs to my xbox. i tried unplugging my xbox and repeating the process but both the dongle and headset just flash in pairing mode. ive also tried factory resetting the headset, but still to no avail.

TL;DR can you walk me thru the process of connecting the 9x to my pc please?

This is assuming you are using the Elite version 1, which lacks bluetooth.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0785SFKYF/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 .
It's the little dongle to use controllers wirelessly, it's supposed to work with these headsets too. So it's just wireless but I believe it uses the same connection as it uses to connect to the Xbox. Just requires resyncing when moving between Xbox and PC

Xbox 360 requires a special wireless adapter - These aren't made anymore, but I have an official MS adapter you can have if I can find it. Just cover shipping.
Xbox One - may need it's own separate adapter. This is what I'm using now, unless your controller supports Bluetooth. Not all do.
PS3, PS4, and PS5 use standard bluetooth and will work with essentially any BT dongle as far as I'm aware.

I also use an Xbox controller, and yea, BT connection between an Xbox controller and a Shield has awful latency. I had to purchase VirtualHere for $25 and an Xbox One wireless adapter.

I found a random video on YT of a guy who walks through the steps of setting this up: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ahMM3qho7kg
Make sure to purchase VirtualHere from the app, when it says trial has expired. If you purchase directly on the website, it's $50.
Edit: Another option is to use a PS4 Dualshock controller, paired with BT. Feels like you are playing on a console. Only downside is no rumble.
