If the class is going to be online or have online components, then a USB microphone would be great. It makes a significant difference in the audio quality. I use one like this: https://www.amazon.com/Microphone-Condenser-Recording-Streaming-669B/dp/B06XCKGLTP/
If he has an iPad that he might use for grading (many of the online course systems have an app), then an apple pencil can make grading go even more smoothly.
A massage or something that he really enjoys would also be a great thing mid-semester. I know the pandemic complicates everything, but man would a massage be nice right now.
But most importantly I think just your understanding and patience, especially if there's an online component. It seems like there are 10x more emails and fires to be put out. It's been hard for my friends and family to adapt to my new work schedule...

For political science specifically, if he's planning to incorporate current events, a list of places to get reliable news would be great. I get a lot of mine from key reporters I follow on Twitter, from NPR and certain local news sources. Maybe collecting a list of those resources could help?

This is the one I have had it for about 6 months now. Sound quality is unreal for the price. You'd never know it was only 40 bucks https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XCKGLTP?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share.

I've never used that microphone so I'm not sure but this is the mic I use. They raised the price from $30 to $50 which is a shame but this mic or the Blue Snowball are great budget mics. For the mic you're looking at, look up a review and sound test to see if the sound is good. If it isn't, giving to mics I mentioned above might be worth a try!

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but normally when stuff like this happens it's gonna save u a lot of time and money to just get an external mic. For a nice, quality, budget option, I would recommend the https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XCKGLTP/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_gLqvFb6H6Y4P1

if you're a total beginner with recording, I'd advise getting a cheap usb microphone like this
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XCKGLTP/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_p4GfFbJDQG3H2
and use any cheap headphones you already have. even apple earbuds will work. that's your best bet to test whether you wanna do this without spending over $100. after a few months, if you find yourself enjoying it and wanna continue, I'd say to buy:
a Scarlett 2i2 interface, an Audio Technica AT2020 + an XLR cable, Audio Technica M40x headphones
that will all cost you around $250-300 but it's a good way to start up if you're new but know you love making music enough that you'll stick with it

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XCKGLTP/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fabc_iPSUFb05WHRG0?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 I’ve really liked it, it’s not the best microphone in the world by any means but it gets the job done, it sounds much better on low volume than high for sure :)
1 points • unclenico13
Doesn’t need to be anything crazy. I grabbed one of these & it gets the job done: https://www.amazon.com/Microphone-Condenser-Recording-Streaming-669B/dp/B06XCKGLTP?ref_=ast_sto_dp&th=1&psc=1
A blue snowball is also another solid option for under $100

I didn't use any voice reduction technique. The trick is to be in a quiet room and to be as close as possible to the mic. (I used this microphone )

Sorry idk. What I do is I use headphones on bt but I disable headset with mic part. Then I use a standalone mic for when I game+discord. This one is really good https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XCKGLTP/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_6Bo4FbQ48QN5E?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

Thanks so much for the response, this helps a lot. I have a grand piano, a 2003 story and clark that I inherited last summer. It’s a player piano (it plays cds specifically for the piano through an internal speaker). It does have a midi out but that doesn’t seem to do anything in GarageBand so I figured I would just try to buy a mic to record my crappy songs.... the piano sound I’m going for is I guess most similar to alt rock? Radiohead, Fiona Apple, the National, Aphex Twin etc. just tying go give it my best shot so it doesn’t sound super muffled and raw.
There’s a ton of mics on amazon for about $50 - ideally I would just like to buy one, put it on the piano and use line in or usb through my Mac or iPhone
This one is cheap, I might just go with it and give it a shot. Could also use it for my acoustic guitar stuff I guess.

I use this MIC! The audio is fantastic but it's VERY sensitive so it will easily pick up background sounds so if you don't have a audio program/software that can filter it out you might want to look for a different mic.

Someone seriously needs to send JLR a microphone like this so we can hear more of his life. My god Ribbert, you are sitting on a gold mine here.

Hey man,
Make an Amazon Wishlist and set it to the public (Really great instructions here)
https://www.amazon.com/Condenser-Microphone-Recording-Interface-K669/dp/B06XCKGLTP
Add that microphone and let me know when you have and I will buy it and ship it to you without having to know your address.
I'd love to see your video quality go up.
Slap some more gear on there like a 1080p webcam or a ring light and a green screen.
Maybe some more people from the /r/outriders community will join in, too.
And be sure to join the Discord!

Can you use a desk mic instead? You can prob pick up a better headphone. I use this mic since its not cheaply made and carries over my voice even though its about 2-3 feet away from me.
Edit: WOW, price for this went up, I think I bought this for 30 bucks
1 points • theemagma
How about something like this? It has great quality and can sound quite well with something like a virtual EQ (free). Plus, it can be used with any pair of headphones people have laying around.
1 points • le_dy0
Its not stupid at all, I was like that too, it really doesnt bother me as much as I thought, im using some random 10$ mic arm with my mic and its fine really.
You dont even need mic arm either, most mics come with something to hold them on a desk or something.
The one im using is this , its quite compact, comes with a little stand and its USB powered, you just have to plug it and it works right away. I cant recommend this thing enough, for that price its just such a steal, you can find reviews of this specific mic on youtube if you want.

I'm just starting too, and if you're looking for a nice and cheap mic to start with, try the Fifine K669B, good quality for only $30

Nothing special- its a USB mic I got off Amazon
RTX Voice works okay most of the time- but sometimes I get static and feedback which my friends have told me pop up every once in awhile during Discord calls. I stream sometimes as well and it gets annoying to continuously close and open during my streams to restart the program.

I bought this FiFine USB cardioid mic for like $30 and it's actually great! There's a little bit of electrical whine when the room is perfectly silent, but a noise suppression filter in OBS gets rid of it no problem.
Don't expect it to compete with $100 AudioTechnicas, but if you want something cheap that sounds like a Blue Yeti, this might fit the bill.

$40, decent mic.

I bought the Fifine from amazon for my discord calls. Turned out pretty good.
2 points • ZekkenYuukine
It depends on what you mean by "cheap" but I recommend something in the $50 range. Here are two of the most common, and most recommended:
Blue Snowball
FiFine USB Mic
Both are similar in quality and sound, but Blue is a name brand.

Check out the Fifine USB mic : https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XCKGLTP Or Blue Snowball Ice mic: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B006DIA77E/
Both are excellent and literally all you need, I have the Fifine and have used it to even record some songs with some friends before.

Pretty simple actually. It's perfect for discord calls, which is all I really use it for.

This could be a good set of headphones for cheap if you want something that has good sound for cheap: Samsons
If you need a mic you could go for a headset or just grab something like this for around 35-40 bucks:Fifine
(but only if you can afford it, otherwise not much you can do if you want a gaming headset b/c they are usually overpriced)
1 points • s706377
I do have a fairly decent external mic. (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XCKGLTP/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1). At least as of now it is still available, if you're looking for a mic I would certainly consider it. The only reason I would prefer a headset with a mic built in is to reduce background noise and then I don't have to worry about having to position the mic akwardly
1 points • ArchAngelNavi
it depends on your budget but the cheapest one with the best reviews i could find is this one by a company called fifine

what about getting a pickup for your acoustic? I haven't ever tried that but I would think it might work better.
This is the Mic I have. when I bought it, it was like 25 bucks. Seems to gone up a bit. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XCKGLTP/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Another idea is you might could add a pickup to your acoustic but I dont know what it would take to install that and it might be hard to get someone to do it for you with covid lockdown going on.

https://discoverpods.com/best-podcast-mic-podcasting-microphone/ I’m not sure of your price range but these are a few good options
If you want something simple I’d suggest this https://www.amazon.com/Microphone-Condenser-Recording-Streaming-669B/dp/B06XCKGLTP/ref=mp_s_a_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=podcast+microphone&qid=1592521878&sprefix=podcast&sr=8-5
For editing the videos I’d recommend adobe premiere pro (I find it less cumbersome compared to iMovie but whichever one you personally prefer is the one you should go with)
There are also tutorials that can help make the editing process less intimidating. I hope this helped and good luck :)
