I had ordered these. PB42x

Drivers seem similar to the MTM center I got from there which I like.

For speakers, because of /r/Audiophile I went with the Micca PB42X Powered Bookshelf Speakers

That was a few years back, not sure if things have changed since then, but I'm still happy with them.

As for headphones, because of /r/buildapcsales I've owned the Sennheiser HD598 since, what was probably their first $100 sale. Some time later I "upgraded" to some pricier Audio-Technicas, but I didn't care for the sound. They was fine, sharper, but lacked base and a wider stage. To change it up I went to the Sennheiser HD599 SE's. Essentially the same as the old ones I owned but look nicer imo. Happiest with these.

Went for the JDS and I love it! Exactly the setup I needed. I like the fact it has the switch and the rca output, like you mentioned, but I just want to check one thing before I try this... Can I plug my powered Micca PB42x speakers into that output? I just want to make sure I can use the switch and seamlessly listen through those without damaging them, instead of having to unplug my turntable from the headphone amp and into my speakers every time. Thanks!

You probably need powered monitors unless you're also adding an integrated amp or receiver. Micca PB42X is my go to for powered monitors in the $100-150 range. If you want to go lower than that others may chime in with options.

Check out the Micca PB42X. A little above $100 but definitely seems like the best option for what you're looking for.

I guess it depends on what you are using the speakers for but bookshelf speakers should generally be much better than a soundbar. These look nice and are well under your budget.

So these would work with a turntable with a built in preamp, and that’s all that I would need?

I'm going to throw my 2 cents in here. (having owned A2+s and some more $$ Yamaha studio monitors)

These sound amazing - and for the price, I don't see the point in buying anything else ever again... https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NXAEPDC/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

These powered speakers could work very well for you and a better choice than a soundbar. https://www.amazon.com/Micca-PB42X-Powered-Bookshelf-Speakers/dp/B00NXAEPDC/

My brother has the passive version of these and they're much better than any other computer speakers I've ever heard.

Hi guys, I just bought a Micca PB42X

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NXAEPDC/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1

and there seems to be an ambient high pitched squealing sound whenever it's powered on. Do I need to change the wires? Or is this due to it being self powered?

Pair these with a cheap sub like a psw10 from Polk and you'll be very happy

The only thing you can get new for that price will be powered/active speakers. Most speakers are passive, and need an amplifier or AV receiver (which has a built-in amplifier) to power them. The speakers you linked are passive, so even though they are $100, you would have to spend another $100 or so to buy a stereo amplifier for them.

In the $100 powered speaker range you can get something like these or these.

The Micca's are probably a slightly better speaker, but the Edifiers come with a remote which is nice.

If you wanted to go amp + bookshelf speakers, I’d recommend either the Micca MB42x for $90, or a pair of Infinity R152s when they go on sale for $150-160. I know the infinity’s are a bit above your budget, but they are fantastic speakers. I own the R162s and love them to death for the $160 I paid for them. If space is an issue, I’d avoid waiting for a sale on them because the R162s are massive. The Miccas are the go to budget recommendation, as they are a big step above the B652s in terms of sound quality. There is a reason the B652s are only $50 with a $20 Lepai amp.

Of course you’ll need an amp with those, and the lepai would work but I’d recommend something a bit bigger and more power. You could look at used stereo amps, or older home theater receivers but again if space is an issue (since you mentioned near field listening) this might not be the best setup. The pros are that you can swap speakers at any time, instead of being stuck with a set of powered speakers. I’d recommend looking at your local used market to see what speakers and amps are available, as you might be able to snag a great deal. You could look into class D amps in the $50-60 range such as an SMSL to power the MB42x, although I know it’s a bit above your budget.

That brings me onto powered speakers. I find that most of the subwoofers in these very budget units don’t add much value at all. You also don’t get much flexibility with powered speakers vs an amp and bookshelf speakers if something dies. Edifiers are regarded as the go to for budget powered speakers, and the 1280t is a very good set of speakers. I’m looking at a buying the 1280DBs for my dad, as they offer an optical input for connecting to his TV. I’ve also heard great things about the Presonus speakers, but I don’t have enough room for another set of speakers.

Micca also offers a powered speaker, the PB42x but I don’t know as much about them.

As for the Microsystems, I’m not really impressed. I’d rather get powered speakers then one of them.

With all of that said, here’s a TL;DR because I got a bit long winded:

I’d recommend a small amp or receiver if space isn’t as big an issue + non powered speakers for the best flexibility. It might be above your budget a bit, but it’s worth it in the long run. If that’s not your thing, I’d do more research into the Edifiers, Presonus, or the Miccas powered speakers as they are all great and will be much better than the Microsystems. Avoid the 2.1 setups because you’ll get better sound from the powered speakers without a crappy sub.

Feel free to message me if you’re interested in the used market. I can try to point you in the right direction, although I know we have this virus crap going around so it may be a bit more difficult right now.

Audio-Technica AT-LP60BK Fully Automatic Belt-Drive Stereo Turntable, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008872SIO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_SKOsFbM3YP7EX

here’s the turntable i use. i had to adjust the RPM when i got it but that’s a very easy process

powered speakers are the way to go if you want to save money, they do the job, even if they’re not the greatest option

Micca PB42X Powered Bookshelf Speakers with 4-Inch Carbon Fiber Woofer and Silk Dome Tweeter (Pair) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NXAEPDC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_RMOsFbPHWKS35

micca is a great low price audio brand with very sleek powered speakers. with the LP60s built in preamp and these speakers internal power you pretty much have everything you need. if you’re looking to lower the price even further i’d suggest going for some of the lower end speakers micca makes, but just be sure that you’re getting powered speakers.

not to sound like an asshole audiophile, but do try to avoid any of the $50 to $100 all in one turntables with speakers built in and stuff. they not only sound terrible most of the time, but also have crappy tone arms and cheap stylus parts that can eventually do damage to your vinyl. it’s a daunting price tag starting out, but do keep in mind once you get these items you wont be dropping more on it unless you decide to add more components like a preamp for headphones or something.

Transparent Zero | Vanatoo are another good compact option. Or less pricey Micca PB42X .

I recommend passive speakers and a mini amp for more flexibility.

Im replacing a logitech x530 because my new computer only has a 3.5 line in(Headphone) , line out and microphone jack

Im about to buy this Klipsch promedia , but I was looking for other suggestions around a similar budget, up to 200-300$ if its really worth it. It'll be for a small 100 square feet room in an apartment, used mostly for gaming and media consumption.

The micca PB42X posted here seems nice, and would would work with my pc with the posted cable, right? Is there no need for a subwoofer with the bass these speakers have?

Taking any suggestions, would prefer something better , but some clarifiation of the pros and cons of the klipsch vs the micca would be good, too.

Whatever you do, do not buy one of those little brief case ones.

The Audio Technica LP 60 is a great beginner’s turntable for the price and for speakers I’d recommend a pair of the Micca PB42X speakers.

Happy collecting!

In general, speakers are the most important part of the chain and should comprise the bulk of one's budget if all you're doing is speakers and an amp. Others may disagree with me, but IMO you're unlikely to hear much of a difference (or any) between the cheap class D amps on lower tier speakers like those in your budget range. It's more about the features and form factor, which does indeed seem to be important in your case.

You can also look into powered stereo speakers w/a sub out. This will remove the need for an amp and it'll simplify the process. This does, however, make it impossible to upgrade in a modular fashion, so keep that in mind. Edifier is a go-to on this sub, and these are on sale. Another option often recommended is the Micca PB42X. Both of these are designed primarily for desktop use and will have a small form factor, yet they'll still be bigger than the Logitechs.

Those are some boopable noses too. I'm sure they'll appreciate the upgrade! We lost our corgi last winter, and the morbid joke between my wife and I is that the old girl smelled 2020 coming and said "fuck this!" Starting to come around to being ready for another doggo though...just not enough to take the training plunge with two toddlers.

Not as bad as I thought then lmao, but still not the best either. I’d say the best “beginner” table would be the Audio Technica LP60 it’s not the best turntable out there, but it’s good quality for the price and has a built in per-amp which saves money. Plus I’m a fan of belt-driven over direct drive. The cartridge it comes with will be pretty good, but I’d recommend the Ortofon 2M Red. Even if you can’t afford it now, you should replace your cartridge every year or so anyway so it’d be good to get down the line (or the blue if you’re willing to cop it for another 80 bucks). As for speakers, I’d go for the Micca PB42X, which have a built in amplifier which save money and that and can get pretty loud for just bookshelf speakers. With the speakers you may want studio monitor isolation pads to help reduce unwanted vibrations which can effect the sound quality, but that’s more optional.

Basically, audio equipment is expensive, any cheaper “all in one” package type deal that seems too go to be true generally is. But not only does paying a bit more now save money on potentially having to replace the cheap stuff later, but it also helps keep your records safe too. And judging by that release alone, I’d definitely want to make sure it doesn’t get damaged over time.

Consider the Micca PB42X. I'd go renewed and save 30%. They're plenty powerful for a small to medium size room, but if you want more power just upgrade the power adapter (the amp is able to handle it, and the speakers can handle a lot more). It's recommended on the shopping and setup help desk for r/audiophile.

And if you can wait, you might get it on craigslist or fakebook marketplace. I picked up a pair on there for $30. I guess he had lost the original power adapter and was using something really underpowered. I had an 19V/3.42A power adapter sitting around (originals come I think are 18V/2A) and they're more than ample to fill my 20x13 office.

When you want a sub, absolutely do CL or FB.

What are some good options for good quality speakers for gaming and listening to music? I mostly listen to electronic music and am looking for speakers where I can hear subtle notes as well as good quality bass. My price range is $100-$250.

So far I've looked at:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NXAEPDC/ref=ox_sc_mini_detail?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=AFKH6OU9WWNFS

https://www.logitech.com/en-us/product/powerful-thx-sound-z625?crid=47

Are there any other good options? My motherboard is a Z370 - not sure if that matters

That's a great budget to work with! There's a lot of stuff that I enjoy in that price range.

Unfortunately my power is out right now for some reason so I'm typing this all up on my phone.

You can get either a passive setup or an active setup. A passive setup will be speakers with a separate amplifier. An active setup will be speakers that have an amplifier inside of them.

I prefer passive setups. You can replace a component if something goes wrong, you can add features, and you can upgrade as needed. If you have an active setup and something breaks or you want more features, you've got to start over, but with a passive setup you don't.

So, for a passive setup, you'll need speaker cable as well as an RCA to 3.5mm cable to plug it into the computer. The speaker cable is just a spool of it that you can cut to the length you need. If you don't want to do that, go for something like this instead. I buy spools and cut it though because it's cheaper.

Just so you know now, it goes like this: Computer -> RCA cable -> amplifier -> speaker cable -> speakers.

Alright, now that we've got that out of the way, you'll need an amplifier. The SMSL SA36 is what I'd recommend. I've got a few of them scattered about my house and they work great. Plenty of power for pretty much any listening volume. If you'd like to plug the amp in with an optical cable or USB cable, the Micca OriGain would be my choice. At $100, it's double the price though. It also has a subwoofer output, to make that easier in the future if you decide to get a sub.

Finally we're at speakers. The Micca MB42X are the go-to beginner speakers. Everything about them is great. They've got a decent amount of bass, vocal clarity is good, and the top end is extremely sharp. I had these on my desk for a while and I definitely was not disappointed. I've actually got them in my kitchen now, hooked up to that SMSL amplifier and an Echo Input. Anyways, they're really fantastic speakers. And it looks like they're on sale now at $70

Moving up in price just a tad, the Edifier P12 come in at $80. I enjoy these speakers a lot. They've got a smoother top end that's a bit rolled off, which makes them easy to listen to for hours without feeling fatigued. They've also got a really good amount of bass for the size. The Miccas are a bit more detailed, and the Edifiers are a bit smoother and easier to listen to. Also, and I totally forgot until right now, the Edifiers come with speaker wire, so you won't have to get a spool of it.

These are the only speakers in the bunch that I haven't heard. Edifier P17. From the looks of it, they have better build quality. The posts for the speaker wire look much better. The woofer looks to be a different material. I imagine they sound better that the P12 since they're $10 more, but I don't actually know.

Moving up in price once again, the Micca OoO come in at $100. Yeah I know, weird name. Anyways, they're very skinny speakers that are tall, and definitely great for desktop use since they don't take up a ton of space. They're a bit more like the Edifier P12 than the Micca MB42X. Very smooth and a good amount of bass. I like them a lot.

These next ones will be like $10 out of your budget with all of the cables and such, but I'm going to include them anyways. The Micca RB42. They come in at $150. So $150 for those, $50 for an amp, and $15ish for cables puts you actually about $15 over budget. Anyways, I only mentioned them because I think they'd be worth it. They have a very good amount of bass. Like, you'll probably never feel the need for a subwoofer. It hits extremely low and is clean. Absolutely fantastic performers. The midrange is clean and totally correct, and the top end is very detailed, but doesn't push it out at you. I'm recommending these ones because I could see them being endgame for a lot of people. They're small, they look great, they sound great, and they have a full presentation from top to bottom. Seriously, I know they're out of your budget by a tad, but even if you have to save up a bit more, I think it would be worth it for these. I absolutely love them.

Okay let's talk about powered stuff quick. Before I get to it though, I just want to mention that I haven't actually heard any of these. They're very popular though, and some people that I know have heard them. I'm not going to say anything else about them really, since I honestly don't know.

Fluance AI40 - $200

Edifier R1850DB - $200

Edifier R1700DB - $150

Edifier R1280DB and R1280T. I put those together because the DB are the Bluetooth versions of the T. $100 and $130 for those.

Micca PB42X - $120 (I'm pretty sure these will sound the same as the MB42X since they're just those but powered, but I'm not actually sure)

Alright that's about it. Like I said, I haven't heard any of those so I can't comment on them.

I hope this helps! Please let me know if you've got any more questions!
