The Micca MB42X are 5.8 inches wide, so that could definitely work.

These are passive speakers that will need an amp, and they're also not the near-field type so they're better for a TV setup than the $100 Edifiers that are usually used as PC speakers. A more apt comparison is the Micca MB42X, and the usual /r/BudgetAudiophile opinion is that the Miccas are far better than the Polk.
2 points • DZCreeper
They would work fine, but they only reach down to about 100Hz, so you will definitely want some capable subwoofers to fill in the lower range. Best use would be to have all 3 of the channels sitting upright behind an acoustically transparent projector screen.
Keep in mind that MTM designs like that will have lobing issues vertically, because the drivers are no longer time aligned as your head moves off-axis. So making sure the tweeters are precisely ear level is extremely important.
5.x has side surrounds, not rears, which are 7.x.
For surrounds, I would use a pair of $80 Micca MB42X. Those Monoprice speakers are even lower quality, and up-firing Atmos isn't good at the best of times. For real Atmos, use ceiling channels, or wall mounted heights.

Anything other than a sound bar will most likely require an AV receiver wired to standalone (bookshelf) speakers. That would probably exceed your budget, but if not, Micca MB42X are fucking great speakers.

These Micca MB42x seem to be highly recommended for the price. $90 + $70 for the matching center. Fairly small footprint.

Keep the SMSL SA36 and get Micca MB42X instead of PB42X for $30 less. Connect the SA36 to the Magni.

Hell no. Those look like Onkyo HTiB speakers. For less money you can pick up a pair of Micca MB42X.

Thank you for the rec!
Do you think these would work better than the Micca MB42X?

Still trying to navigate all this stuff before considering a thread of my own, but I noticed this
> Micca MB42X. These speakers are fantastic for the money. Very clean overall. The only problem is that they sacrifice bass for midrange clarity.
Unless I'm misunderstanding something, these would then make pretty awesome 2.1 starter speakers? I currently have a 2.1 setup, so I'm kind of leaning in that direction already.
I listen to a little bit of everything (including classical music) so having clarity in the upper range, as it sounds like the Miccas do, matters just as much as a having a good bass matters for rap.

Haha I got you! They are the Micca MB42X powered by a SMSL AD18 DAC/Amp.

I've never seen or heard of that sub. I wonder how it compares to a Dayton sub-800 or sub-1000 from partsexpress. There is no way it goes down to 20hz. And if it does it probably sounds like a huge wet fart.
Also the micca mb42x would be a better choice of speakers. Even if they aren't the wood grain look.

I have MB42x Speakers running off a SMSL SA98e, overkill for these but it was leftover from driving debut B6s, and they sound great. They punch way above their price for sound quality. They also pop up on Amazon Warehouse for super cheap.

>EDIT: Is it better to search for passive speakers to pair with my setup or search for active? I just think it's pity not to take advantage of my amplifier that I own.
Only you can decide that. If you do majority mixing, stick with active studio monitors - it is the correct tool for the job you are asking of the hardware in question.
If you only mix occasionally, a pair of passive speakers are fine... you can always double check your mix for accuracy on your headphones.
As far as your speakers, if you're getting passive, the only new ones worth owning at your price point are Micca MB42x.
And if you get active monitors, I guess the go to answer is the JBL 305 series.

Try to use that L/R switch on the back of them as little as possible. Mine went out and only one speaker works now. Apparently it's pretty common. Reached out to Mackie and they sent me to some guy to repair them at my expense. The cost was the same as a set of these Miccas. So, I'm getting them instead.

You can substitute the RB42 for the Micca MB42X if you can find an importer who sells them in the Philippines. They are older than the RB42 so they have been around longer, and are still very popular.

Being a huge Razer fanatic/obsessive and RGB fiend, I get as many accessories Razer as I can. I've been wanting a set of Razer Nommo Chroma Pro speakers for so long but I don't think I could ever justify the price. That's so much to spend on speakers that could be better allocated elsewhere.
So I think that I am relegated to just needing to buy the components separately. That seems to be the best value.
I've had these recommended to me but have no idea where to start as far as amp and subwoofer go.

Help with purchasing speakers and subwoofer for 2.1 computer setup.
So ive had the Logitech Logitech Z623 since 2014 and have grown tired of there sound. Im looking at buying these speakers https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00E7H8GG2/?coliid=I3IZ6VKSMCSL1Z&colid=3604JX7IF00OY&psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it and this subwoofer https://www.amazon.com/Polk-Audio-PSW10-Powered-Subwoofer/dp/B0002KVQBA/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=subwoofer&qid=1595197523&s=electronics&sr=1-2 and connecting them to this yamaha reciever which I got in a 5.1 home theatre system back in 2014 https://usa.yamaha.com/files/download/other_assets/1/328301/HTR-3065_Manual.pdf . I have two questions. Are these speakers a good combo with my reciever? And can I use a rca to subwoofer cable and connect the sub to the subwoofer connection on the reciever? I know this reciever is lacking some ports in regards to subs so im confused if this will work or not. Any help is greatly appreciated! Sorry if this isn't the right subreddit for this question.

I'd suggest the Micca RB42, a decent amp, and then add a Dayton Audio SUB-1000 when you can swing the rest of the budget.
Or, if you want it all now, substitute the Micca MB42x instead.

Then I can always buy more speakers to add to it later.

This is my budget setup that I am happy with (although those Edifiers look pretty sweet):
- Micca MB42X Bookshelf Speakers = $70
- Polk Audio PSW10 10" Powered Subwoofer = $130 (There is a lot of hate for this sub, but it sounds pretty good next to my desk in my 10x12 office.)
- Craigs List / FB Marketplace Denon (or similar) receiver = $100 or less

Yea i was trying to decide between an active Edifier R1700BT or passive Micca MB42X and was thought if i go with a passive and get a good dac/amp i could use it for headphone as well.
So its good to know!
And thanks for the tidbit about the fit on the desk, thats my other fear. Will i have space for my tower, 2 27" monitors and bookshelf speakers on a 74" desk

Get a pair of Micca bookshelf speakers and a little speaker amp and you will be more than all set. Here is the amp and speakers I use on my pc and they are phenomenal

I also added a Klipsch Subwoofer for deeper bass, this would be optional as the miccas already have decent mid bass for things like drums, but if you listen to a lot of EDM or Rap I would recommend a Subwoofer, doesn't have to be this one

yeah it's pretty bad. I mean that doesn't mean you won't enjoy it or can't use it... but this was a store brand cheerios level system when it came out originally and has not aged well as modern systems have gotten even better.

r/Soundbars
You are not going to get a lot of soundbar recommendations here, mostly because soundbars suck. Sure they are better than TV audio, but that is a very low bar. For under $300 you can build a dedicated bookshelf speaker system with a home theater receiver that will blow most soundbars out of the water (even at many times the price). With a receiver you can hook the chromecast up to the HDMI in and then control the volume on your phone.
Something like this would work very well and give you the chance to upgrade with a real subwoofer and surround sound down the road if you want.

Try it with a pair of bookshelf speakers. You can always upgrade them later in life. Or sell the Sonos later.
Those Edifier P17’s are probably ok. Consider also:
Buying a pair of used bookshelf speakers, something classic off eBay or whatever.

If you have a $200 budget:
Micca MB42X $90
Fosi BT10A $60
If you want powered speakers:
Edifier 1280DBs $140
I think most people here will recommend going the passive speaker and amp route as you can grow in the future by adding rather than starting over

I’m in the same boat, & if you are considering a starter set up — get the refurb Audio Technica LP60X, it’s $75 for a much superior product.
As far as amps & speakers — make it easy on yourself & get Dayton B652 x Lepai 2020TI amp combo for $49. OR get the Lepai amp & a set of Micca MB42X Speakers for $80
The elitist would dismiss this but as far as dipping your toes in the game & this economy right now — these r the most decent entries money could buy at this point.
Good luck w your research! This shit is fun!

Wiring up a system is easy and you get so much more value for the money. For the price of the Z906 you could get [these] (https://www.amazon.com/Micca-MB42X-Bookshelf-Speakers-Tweeter/dp/B00E7H8GG2) components and be set.
2 points • stroll_on
In that price range, you are much better off focusing on a 3.1 setup instead.
I would recommend the following:
- Receiver: Yamaha RX-V485 5.1 Channel Receiver ($349.99 refurbished from Accessories4less)
- Left and Right Channels: Micca MB42X Bookshelf Speakers Pair ($89.99)
- Center Speaker: Micca MB42X-C Center Channel ($69.99)
- Subwoofer: Dayton Audio Sub-1500 ($199.95)
- Speaker Wire: Amazon Basics 14-Gauge Speaker Wire ($21.49)
Total: $731.41
If you want to add rear speakers later on, you could 1) use something like the Rocketfish Wireless kit, 2) use Yamaha WX-021 Musicast Wireless Speakers, or 3) just wait until your living situation allows you to wire rear speakers. Don't feel like you need to get everything at once; many people around here (myself included) have expanded their systems over time.
Although rear speakers are nice, you can definitely enjoy your home theater system without them!

Tl;dr: Got my friend who loves EDM a budget setup - tested a few different options to ensure it would be the best listening experience for him. The Micca MB42X paired with the Fosi Audio BT30C amp sounded best. This combination provided solid lows and crisp and clean mids/highs. Also, the speakers have a beautifully simple design. He loved them!
Hi Friends!
A couple of weeks ago I posted looking for advice on which budget speakers and amp I should get my friend for his birthday. Special thanks to u/FidelitySoHigh and u/brazen8 for their help! I wanted to share back some of my findings. Disclaimer: I am no expert, just a regular dude who wanted to share thoughts on a few budget speakers and amps. Also, the pic is just for fun. I moved the speakers around and tested them in different listening environments.
To give you some context, my buddy primarily listens to EDM music, so the low end was particularly important for this purchase. He also listens through YouTube so I wanted something with Bluetooth so he could stream from his phone/computer. I tested the following equipment:
Speakers:
- Polk Audio T15
- Micca MB42X
- Pioneer SP-BS22-LR (aka the “Andrew Jones” speakers)
Amps:
- Fosi Audio BT30C
- Fosi Audio BT20A
- Dayton Audio DTA-2.1
Polk Audio T15 ($99 on sale at Amazon)
- Sound:
- Overall, good sound. Crisp mids and highs. Very light on the low end compared to the other options. Generally lacking depth. These sounded best with the Fosi Audio BT30C.
- Design:
- They feel well-built and sturdy. The screw downs on the rear posts feel a little cheap, but this is not a deal-breaker.
- With the grills off they aren’t as pretty as some of the competition (mainly the Micca’s).
- The compact size is great for a small room or garage (and the front port means they can be wall-mounted).
Micca MB42X ($89.95 on Amazon)
- Sound:
- I was very impressed with the depth of these speakers. The lows sounded amazing along with crisp mids and highs. These also sounded best with the Fosi Audio BT30C.
- Design:
- I really like these. I know some will say these aren’t a premium build, and I agree, but they boast a simple, yet beautiful design. The screw downs on these are also plastic, similar to the Polk’s, but these feel like higher quality plastic.
- The carbon fiber woofer also looks great and feels well constructed.
Pioneer SP-BS22-LR ($79 on sale at Newegg)
- Sound:
- Overall, these sound really good. They provide richer highs and mids than the Polks and Miccas. On the low end, they were stronger than the Polks, but not as strong as the Miccas. No surprise, these also sounded best with the Fosi Audio BT30C.
- If I were buying for myself, I probably would have chosen these and just paired them with a subwoofer.
- Design:
- I’m not going to lie… at first, I thought these were the ugliest speakers I’ve ever seen. In-person, however, they’re quite pleasant.
- Overall, these were the best constructed of the group. They felt extremely solid and more like a premium build (including the gold plated posts and screw downs).
Fosi Audio BT30C ($79.95 on Amazon):
- This amp sounded the overall best in my opinion. Highs and mids were on par with the other Fosi amp and better than the Dayton… but the lows are really where this amp shined. The bass for all 3 sets of speakers sounded better with this amp.
- Another pro to this amp is that Bluetooth automatically reconnects every listening session.
Fosi Audio BT20A ($79.99 on Amazon):
- This amp probably produced the best highs and mids with all 3 sets of speakers; however, wasn’t as punchy in the low end.
- I really liked the toggle power switch on this one. You had to manually reconnect after each listening session.
Dayton Audio DTA-2.1 ($89.98 on PartsExpress):
- I really wanted this to be my favorite of the group, but it just felt flat. Compared to the Fosis, the highs and mids felt muffled and the low end was non-existent. Also, this model uses an older Bluetooth standard compared to the Fosis.
For fun, I also hooked all these amps up to my Kef Q150s and that’s where you can really see the difference in speaker quality. The Kefs provided super clear highs and mids and solid lows -- they could shake the apartment with the bass turned up with little distortion. Funnily enough, the highs and mids sounded way brighter to me on the Fosi amps than my Denon AVR-S740H, which almost makes them sound muffled (still sounds great though, don’t get me wrong).
Anyway, I know this was a lot. I’ve learned so much from this sub and love being a part of this community. Happy listening! :)

That really depends on how much you want to spend. I allways recommend going for passive speakers and a separate amp, i found it to just be better imo.
If you want something around 200$, a pair of Micca MB42X and a AMP like the SMSL SA50 will be good enough for most people, you can add a separte sub down the line, like this Polk PSW10
If you are someone who prioritizes aesthetics, take a look at the Kanto YU4 line up, they are pretty decent and are often on sale.
Vanatoo t0 are probably the best speakers out there with a small form factor and they also output quite a bit of bass which is surprising for such size.
I never messed around with cheaper stuff than that so I cant really recommend anything below that price point but im sure you might be able to find something cheaper. r/BudgetAudiophile is a place you wanna visit if you need help.

just throwing out a budget friendly option, not necessarily the best one:
two sets of Micca MB42X bookshelves
Bic F12 subwoofer or Dayton SUB-1200
If wires are an issue, maybe go for higher quality 3.1?

After stalking this sub for months, I finally got my budget desktop setup. I had asked here a few times how people were handling decent desktop audio while also easily getting into a headset for conference calls. Most amps or speakers with inputs only had headphone inputs, not microphone, and the single input was not TRRS or "4 pole" carrying both stereo and the microphone signal. I wanted to log my solution here for anyone else woh wants to rock but also do conference calls or game easily.
My previous solution was to use two dacs or soundcards, one plugged into speakers, one plugged into the headset, and I would use the windows audio controls to change between hardware devices. This was ok, but I would often have to restart some software for the change to take effect, notably some vidoeo games I played only queryed the sound device on startup.
My new setup>
Micca MB42X - Extremely happy with this purchase. I have a normal sized office room, they sound great. I agonized over which speakers to buy, and feel I made a good choice. I was really suprised at how much bass they have. Music sounds far better than on my corsair headset. I do not expect to want to buy a sub, but I'm in the hobby now so who can say.
Kinter K3118 - Not sure I'd be able to tell the difference between a 3118 and 2020, but I read it was good so thats what I got. The "blue ring" around the knob is not nearly as bright as I expected, it doesn't annoy me at all, and I'm easily annoyed. Love the bass and treble controls. I like that it has a power switch and is just always on, unlike other digital devices which power down after some time.
Nobsound MC1024 - The hardware switch! They have multiple models depending on if you want a slider switch, or a button, or you need separate mic/headphne or just headset cables. The one I got works for single 3.5mm headsets. This model uses a switch, which is a little small, so I may order the button version. It does what I wanted though so I'm happy enough with it for now.
Audio comes out of a soundblaster play! 3 dac (may upgrade this idk), 3.5mm to the nobsound switch, which has 3.5mm to the kinter amp, and to the headset, and lets you easily switch between the outputs. No restarting software to change from music on the speakers to gaming or work conferences.

Gotcha, well let's be honest here, do you plan to add onto your set up or just keep it on a basic 3.1 set up? The budget is kinda low.
Need to pick a future proof receiver if so & a refurb DENON S730H that'll let you have up to 5.1.2 ATMOS set up & room correction is $220. Starter bookshelf's like the Micca MB42X's (Pair) for Left & Right, $80. That on its own is your budget, extras would be the wall mounts or stands for them of your choosing $30+; Speaker Wire (50ft) $10, Banana Plugs $10. You can later on add the center channel, surrounds, sub, etc. or save up & get better speakers while you enjoy the basics.
Don't want you to go down the home theater in a box route since it'll limit your expansion & use, rather recommend saving up more dough & get a good starter set up later on man, getting the Harmony remote & building a media center in a closet will also cost you in supplies; power, ventilation, long HDMI cables, speaker wiring, etc.

So there are two ways to go at this - a Schiit Fulla (or Hel) can handle both mic and headphones, but that is it - no way to go for speakers.
I will direct you to /r/headphones for headphones, because if you are going GAMING!!11ONE11! headphones, typically the sound is shit. Picking up a cheaper set of headphones and a mod mic will be a lot better.
Say you grab a DT770 Pro (just means it squeezes tighter) 32 Ohm ($137 on Amazon) plus a ModMic Uni ($50 on AntLion Audio - makers of) brings you to $187. Add a Schiit Fulla - $99 and you can certainly power the headphones (80 ohm Dt770s are $140 in gray - see this dive into the weeds on the difference between the various DT models where pants on head people claim the 80 has 'more bass' than the 32, pants on head because they are subjectivists and don't pull a scope out to check). Net $268.
Now speakers, this is going to limit you most likely to bookshelf which lack in bass (typically) to their larger cousins tower/floorstanding. Micca MB42X ($80 Amazon) could be paired with a Dayton DTA-1 amp ($26) bringing you to $392. Idea would be all audio into the (one or two cables from the computer based on USB power allowable) Fulla - headphones and mic through the front two inputs, TRS M/M from back of Fulla to DTA-1. DTA-1 via speaker to the Miccas. If you want more bass, add a Polk PSW10 (or similar) sub ($129), and go DTA-1 into the SPEAKER level inputs, and then SPEAKER level outputs to the Miccas. All told 521 plus shipping and tax.
Upgrades would be for the Miccas - they are very entry level, see sidebar here for where to go. Sub is probably fine, amp could be more, but if you are sitting at a desk 85dB/W @1m speakers fed 15W is still enough to cause hearing loss so you would be getting more quality from the amp than you needing to increase the power (sidebar again). Same with the DAC/Amp - some people HATE Schiit (partially marketing, while they do have internal testing I am willing to bet they are not 6Sigma quality so some bad experiences have made it out). You can go to a Hel for another 90, above that you have to swap brands for mic inputs.
