If you're only doing miniatures this is really all you need. It's quiet enough to keep in the same room you're working in as well.

I would recommend this guy. Not super expensive and checks all the boxes painters recommend. I have mine for years with no issues and I love it. Not to loud and the compressor is about the size of a kid's lunch box...

All good questions!

  • You don't need to wash modern model kits, or at least Bandai kits. They come squeaky clean from the factory. Old car kits, like the Revell/Monogram brands, could be quite greasy out of the box and would need to be washed.

  • I usually mask my connection points. Excess paint can sometimes cause a connection to be too tight and not fit properly. Some parts will crack if you try to force them together when coated in paint. The exception to this rule would be a loose fit out of the box - adding a bit of paint or super glue can help in some cases.

  • With a top coat there are usually 3 varieties of finish: flat, satin and gloss. Gloss is perfect for panel lines or if you want a shiny, glossy finish. Satin is less glossy and flat has no gloss. Flat tends to look the nicest as it reflects less light and you'll see more of the "true" color of your paint. You can always change the sheen by spraying gloss, satin or flat over your previous finish.

  • Definitely get a compressor. Compressed air works ok, but you'll save a lot of money over the long run if you get a compressor. Also, you can't regulate airflow from a can. Compressors typically come with a regulator allowing you to adjust airflow as needed. Any one of the basic $100 compressors on Amazon will work fine.

EDIT: Here's a great starter kit for $100 - includes the airbrush and compressor:

This is the kit I started with, it's not top quality obviously but it is a great place to start and the compressor is actually pretty solid. For$100 you can't go wrong

Airbrush, I just got back into modeling after 10 years (I am 22 and have some free time before I go to basic training next month so I’ve been doing a couple kits that have been sitting in my closet for a few years now. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B001TO578Q?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_image

This is a nice compressor with a cheaper starter airbrush that he can replace with a higher quality one as he gets better. The effects that are able to be done with an airbrush can really bring a model to life, and it can be used for other things besides modeling as well

This seems like a good deal. I got it a week ago and haven't tested much, but you'll probably be hard pressed to find a compressor/brush combo for a better price.

This set will still be useful as a beater or for questionable applications after you upgrade to a real brush like an iwata.

The kits on Amazon like this one are a good place to start. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001TO578Q/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_IlSlFbJZMPDJF Plenty of people will tell you to get a good brush from the start, and there is merit to that way of thinking. The good ones last longer and have fewer issues while giving you more control. I haven't had many issues with my cheap ones, but others do. Some people will tell you to get a compressor with a tank. It's not as necessary with newer compressor designs, since you don't get as much "pulsing" in the airflow as older designs. But a tank will have the compressor cycling less often and will catch more moisture than the trap on the regulator. It really comes down to how much you think you'll use it and your budget as to whether you go high end or lower priced.

I went for this one because the compressor in The “best cheap combo” listed on this sub is pretty trash. I’m going to use this to learn and start and eventually I’ll upgrade to a better one. If this ones decent I’ll prob just end my airbrush.

I use the Xtreme patriot 105 and it's a good brush for sure, for compressor I used this for 2 years now and have had no issues and the brush is what I use day in day out for everything I do mostly even detail sections. But iwata is a good brand as well basically you get what you pay for but starting out i wouldn't buy an expensive compressor until you know it's something for you

I've owned this kit for a year, and while it isn't amazing, it will for sure fit your priming needs: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001TO578Q/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_imm_t1_Ok.UFb7CDV07F?psc=1

Also has anyone ever used the cheap airbrush kit on amazon, Master? Im sure its not high quality but I’ve been looking at other recommended setups and its like $400+ when all said and done, which is out of my beginner budget. (I want more termite drills with that kind of money). thanks

No, honestly, not really. The setup I recommended is probably the best bang for your buck and I did a LOT of research before buying what I did. I have too many hobbies already, so my setup was focused on getting the best I could under $150. The Paasche Model H is probably the best airbrush you can buy for $50 or less. I love it, easy to clean, easy to use, consistent results. If mine broke, I'd buy another the same day. Now, you might be able to find a cheaper compressor, like one without a tank, but even the cheapest I've seen are about $50-60 bucks. I did see this kit for $99 on Amazon. It looks decent, but I've had that type of cheap airbrush before and I will tell you that the Paasche Model H will be a much easier airbrush to use and maintain.

I'll just say this. After years of being into various hobbies, the one thing I've learned is to buy the right thing the first time. Sure you can buy something cheaper, but in the long run, you'll regret not just waiting, saving up and buying what you really need. What happens is you buy a cheap alternative, realize it's garbage, then you end up buying something else and something else and then, before you know it, you've already spent the money you could have saved to buy the right thing from the start. And when I comes to skill-based hobbies or building hobbies, it's all about having the right tools.

In the meantime, you might just stick with the Tamiya rattle cans. They're really good and can deliver an excellent paint job. I saw your black Miata build and the problems you had with it. I think it is because you sprayed a lacquer over acrylic. You have to be careful layering different types of paints. Anyway, best of luck, whichever path you take!

Here is the basic one I started with a few years ago. I still use it for basic priming and clearcoating. The pressure is not perfectly steady, but works well enough. Like wise, the nozzle is not exactly suited for doing really small detail work, but for basic shading and such it works fine.

You will want to have some sort of spray area setup to vent air out, either a pre-built spray booth or something homemade.

I bought the Gocheer Mini Airbrush kit off Amazon for this kit but was a terrible experience to work with. You get what you pay for. I bought this Master Airbrush kit and it works so, so much better. Currently using it for a WIP MG Justice to pair with my Freedom. ^_^

Brush didn't last terribly long, but the compressor is still kicking after 6 years. Once the brush died, I ordered a Badger 105 and haven't looked back. I don't do any of the fine, fine detail stuff some folks do, but it's great for priming, base coating and shading. I do a lot of the fine detail stuff the old fashioned way.

Also, Badger is running their annual sale right now, so a good many of their brushes are $56. The caveat is that it can take a good while to get the brush as the sale generates a large amount of orders for them. Mine took 4-ish months to get to me last year.

next time check the wiki. here is an answer to the same question from earlier:

This compressor and airbrush set is said to be good. One customer states:

I have read through all of the reviews with low ratings and I can all see why they gave this WONDERFUL product a low rating. It is simply because they are ignorant, not because the product if broken. Heck, I thought my compressor and airbrush were broken when I first got them, too!

As a newbie to this product and airbrushing in general, here is a little newbie guide I threw together:

The compressor: The first deal is that the regulator is not attached. My compressor came with Teflon tape (I'm not sure if yours will, I got mine used). You NEED to wrap the male part on the compressor in Teflon tape then screw on the regulator. This is done so that the none of the air leaks out. Once it is attached, you can hook up the braided hose. Here is the deal with the compressor: when it is turned on, it will not constantly run, it has an auto shut off once it has stored pressure. On top of this, your airbrush must be hooked up to the hose & compressor for the gauge to work. To adjust the pressure, you pull out the black knob on the regulator and then twist it left/right, it should have + and - symbols so you know which way to twist it. Note, the gauge will only read if you have the compressor running and the hose is hooked up to your airbrush! If your compressor has auto shut off and you need to adjust the pressure, just run some air through the airbrush so that it starts back up again. Also, keep in mind when you are airbrushing the compressor will turn itself on and off. THIS IS NORMAL AND A GOOD THING, don't let it alarm you. It means your regulator and compressor are working correctly!

The airbrush: as stated earlier, the airbrush must be hooked up to the compressor and the compressor must be running for it to work properly (this should be obvious, but I will state it anyway). There are two controls on the airbrush, and also some adjustments. The first control is pressing the trigger down, which will make air come out. Note, when it is pressed down there should be NO fluid coming out, just air. Once the trigger is pushed down, when you pull it back your liquid should come out stronger and stronger. If you cannot pull your trigger back far enough to let the liquid out, here is what might be wrong: On the very back of the airbrush (opposite of the front) is a little knob. If you loosen this knob, it will allow you to pull the trigger further and further back allowing you to release more and more liquid.

As I said earlier, I am nowhere near an expert or even an adept on air brushes. As my first air brush, for $80 (I got mine used from Amazon) this is WORTH EVERY PENNY. Airbrushes alone go for $100+, where this is an airbrush AND a compressor AND a regulator (yes, some airbrush/compressor kits don't come with regulators)! As for quality, I honestly don't know how good the airbrush is, but I used it to write my name and paint some model kits, and the paint (water based acrylic thinned with Windex) came out evenly with no splattering. Also, the included booklet is a joke. It is about 5 pages front and back, and basically explains how to clean your airbrush and tells you to practice painting lines, dagger strokes, and dots. The important thing is that it explains how to clean your airbrush. It is EXTREMELY important to keep your airbrush cleaned if you want it to last you forever. The brush gets gunked up with paint quick, so it is important to keep it clean. Just keep in mind that when you purchase this you will have to keep it maintained. It is not too hard to clean, you just need to run some cleaner through it and unscrew some small parts.

Conclusion: If you are looking for a airbrush for painting anything, this is worth it. I personally use it for painting model kits but you can use it for everything else!

So a little work is involved.

airbrush cleaner depends on what paints you will need. acrylic paint- isopropyl alcohol is your thinner and cleaner. Lacquer- dedicated thinner and cleaner.

if you will paint inside, you will need a booth. by now you should have around 100 bucks, so you could buy a $100 spray booth or make your own. your choice.

Again, if you paint with lacquers the DIY spray booth may have a chance of "blowing up" so if you will make one you need to be wary of what fan you use.
