Via r/AskReddit post here, room darkening shades are among the top items under $100 that are described as "life changing", to which I concur
Also another amazing investment I made was a white noise machine because I lived off a very busy intersection during my college years. The model I linked has been with me for a number of years and still works great! (Not a promotion lol)

Get a white noise machine: https://www.amazon.com/Marpac-Classic-White-Noise-Machine/dp/B00HD0ELFK.
Pricy but lasts forever and worth it’s weight in gold.

I am partial to these. The OG sound machine. Fan operated. Very reliable. American made.

Grew up with these and they’re amazing. Might take two for fireworks depending on how far away.

I have found that one of these roatry sound machines is amazing for shutting out the new sounds of a new place when you're trying to sleep. At $40 it's not as cheap as an electronic one but it'll last a long time and it's very effective.

The speaker is an electro mechanical device and its vibration was what killed lesser machines I owned. I never dissected one to see what went wrong exactly, but it would sound like the way the speaker was mounted inside worked loose and a rattle would begin. Or some other internal component would get worked loose from the speaker vibration. On one it was the grill on top that started rattling and I probably could have ripped it off and reglued it, but I was sick of dealing with it.
The two highest rated noise machines seem to escape those issues and they are the Lectro Fan I linked previously, and the Marpac Dohm, which uses an actual fan inside. I chose the Lectro Fan for the wider volume range and for it's only moving part being the speaker cone.

Thyroid medications may take a while to start working, possibly up to three months.
No electronics in bed
Room darkening shades and blinds
no caffeine min. 8 hours before bed
White noise machine Dohm White Noise Machine
Girlfriend and I sleep with an air purifier running that doubles as a white noise machine, and ceiling fan, but we have that ^ white noise machine as backup.
Don’t drink to much liquid before bed.
Just a few things to think about.

I know your memeing but in case people were interested in what is actually done, it's hold the call in another room and depending on the level of confidentiality place one of these outside the door.

At night a white noise machine can be helpful for drowning out low-level pet sounds. I hate the electronic "white noise," but find the more fan-like Dohm white noise machines are awesome for pet sound purposes.

I once got an apartment next to a stoplight that had a constant beeping sound. I bought a white noise machine to counteract it, and it was extremely helpful.

This is the one that I got. I actually still use it while I'm sleeping nowadays. You can put it up in your bedroom, office, or wherever you're located and it should dampen the pops by quite a bit.

This is my favorite. Nice adjustment of tambre and volume with this one.

I’ve used this one for years and years. It’s a real mechanical fan, so you don’t get the weird digital loop glitches (which drive me nuts!) that you get with most digital machines and apps.

I think everyone who lives in an apartment should have a white noise machine, whether you need it every night to cover the noise of loud TVs or babies (and their exhausted parents), or every once in awhile when your neighbor is having a late party. I use a Dohm white noise machine. It’s slightly more affordable, and also adjustable.
1 points • irishjihad
You can also do it on your computer, but I find the dedicated machine is better. I use the Dohm Classic. A radio set to music will help the animals a bit too, but the white noise is nicer for us humans trying to sleep.

I love my sound machines. I love where I live but I am a few houses from a main road. At night and whenever I travel sound machines are a must. I just tried a lectro fan and I like it. The dohm’s are the best though and worth the money.

When it comes to peace in the bedroom we use the Doha white noise machine. It works wonders for us to neutralize external noise. Really great little machines.

That is the worst. I have neighbors, barely adults, an illegal number of whom are living all crowded into a small apartment right next to mine. They are very loud - I don’t know why they’re always shouting - they aren’t hard of hearing, and they’re all in the same small space FFS - and one of them screeches constantly for no reason (well, I guess she has a reason: for the attention). I was going out of my mind until I bought this. I put it on top of the back of my sofa, the back side of which is against the wall that I share with them, so it’s right behind my head if I’m on the sofa. It has saved my life as well as theirs. I don’t know if it will be quite as helpful for you since your issue is the ceiling, but maybe if you place it on a bookshelf or on top of a desk or table…? It’s not cheap but was more than worth every penny for me.…https://www.amazon.com/Marpac-Classic-White-Noise-Machine/dp/B00HD0ELFK/ref=sr_1_11?dchild=1&keywords=sleep+sound+machines&qid=1589998444&sr=8-11

When my wife was in a rehab nursing home for several months, she had two screamers -- one down a distant hallway, and another just two doors away. 24/7, an hour without screaming was a rare respite. I'd recommend heavy-duty earplugs, and a white noise machine.
I'd also like to offer you a hug. I can't imagine how rough it must be to be unable to hold your wife's hand.

Get a good noise maker dude. It'll change your life. I speak from experience. You can get the ones they use at doctor's offices for about 40 bucks and they last forever. Mine is loud enough to easily block out my tinnitus, though I do have a mild case. Seriously, it's worth the cash. Good sleep is important!

Good tips! About taking calls at home I wonder if a white noise machine would help. The place I go to therapy has multiple rooms/therapists and they put them at their doors so no one can hear the conversation. She can say she’s sensitive to noise or something.
1 points • handbanana42
I like white noise lite. Should be on ios and android. But most sound exactly the same so use whatever works for you.
At home I use sound machines that aren't electric as I find it less irritating. Dohm being my favorite so far. Link for information purposes only, could probably find a better price if you look around.

He needs it to be completely dark and quiet for him to sleep. Could you sleep with a lamp and tv on? Probably not, and your toddler needs a way more controlled environment to sleep well in since his sleep is so much less mature and developed.
I would really advise you to find somewhere else to work or work some other time. If you absolutely cannot, buy a Slumberpod https://www.slumberpod.com and a good white noise machine to place outside of the door to the pod, I like this one on high: https://www.amazon.com/Marpac-Classic-White-Noise-Machine/dp/B00HD0ELFK/
The other important thing here is that he needs to fall asleep in the same place he will wake up in the middle of the night. Imagine you fell asleep in your bed and woke up on the kitchen floor. You would be disoriented and have trouble falling back asleep, right? That’s what’s happening to your kid.
Finally, what does your bedtime routine look like? It sounds like you don’t have one, and to get them to settle in nice and deep, they need something that consistently tells them hey, it’s time to sleep.

As someone who has had to deal with a loud roommate during coronavirus I would also recommend a white noise machine. Put it outside whatever room you're in and it will drown out the noise of whatever is going on outside. In desperate times I also combine it with noise cancelling headphones, but I don't like to wear those all the time

White noise is basically a static sound - it's a mix of sound waves playing across a wide range of frequencies at once. A lot of folks find white noise (or similar variations like pink noise, grey noise, or brown noise, which all focus on slightly different frequency bands) to be soothing. It's commonly used to help babies fall asleep, for example, with the theory being that it mimics the sounds babies hear in utero, so it's soothing. It doesn't work for everyone, and some folks have the exact reaction you're describing - total revulsion. From what I understand, there been some studies on folks with ASD and white noise, and some (but not all) find it helpful because it raises the noise floor and blocks out more distracting noises, and some folks with ASD seem to get the same calming response that a lot of neurotypical folks describe.
We use a mechanical white noise generator like this one: https://www.amazon.com/Marpac-Classic-White-Noise-Machine/dp/B00HD0ELFK
It's basically a small fan inside a plastic enclosure that gives you a few options to adjust volume and frequency. The MyNoise app is also incredible and allows for calibrated noise blocking, animated EQ settings, and a lot more, plus there are something like 100+ nature sounds (available for purchase). Big fan of both options, and I've come to appreciate noise generators for things like meditation and focusing while working.

Everyone in my house uses one of these white noise machines:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HD0ELFK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It's an electric fan vented through vanes. I also use foam ear plugs.
1 points • Bat2121
Were they the soft malleable foam ones or those hard plastic ones that look like cones with slices cut out? If it was the latter, I understand why you would think that, since you've never tried the good kind you can sleep in. Here https://www.amazon.com/Flents-Quiet-Time-Plugs-Pair/dp/B001F5VDVE/
Also, don't use a white noise app. Those are fucking garbage. Get a physical white noise machine. Not a speaker, a machine.
In fact, just buy this one https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HD0ELFK/
It may seem distracting at first, but it's perfectly stable, and your brain will stop noticing it after a very short while.
I lived in the middle of downtown Brooklyn 10-5 years ago while the Barclay's Center and a dozen high rise buildings were being built, AND a block from a hospital with ambulance sirens at any moment.
That's when we bought our white noise machine. Best money I ever spent in my life. And if it's still not enough, just put one earplug in and sleep on your other side, or put both in, and be totally at peace.

We did this for 5 months. For the first 3 my baby was in a cosleeper next to the bed, and then we moved him into a crib. We had a tiny tiny room so there was space for our bed, the crib, and some room to shimmy around them both. I HIGHLY recommend a white noise machine. Babies make a ton of noise so it will be helpful for you, and also trying to sneak in to bed while the baby is asleep can be kind of stressful. This one is my favorite bedside machine, though it needs to be plugged in. For travel I like this one.
We had a changing table set up in the living room that we used. For night changes I would get a changing pad you can put on the bed as needed. Also make sure you have a mattress protector on your bed! Accidents and leaks WILL happen.

Try a white noise machine, we use that for our pup that way she doesn't hear random noises in the night and wake up. We also have it on all day for her while we are at work and she sleeps from about 8am-2 or 3. We live next to a school and the kids used to wake her up throughout the day, until we got this: https://www.amazon.com/Marpac-Classic-White-Noise-Machine/dp/B00HD0ELFK/ref=sr_1_9?keywords=white+noise&qid=1579543234&s=baby-products&sr=1-9

Also, she now knows when the machine turns on, its time for bed. Which is dope.

Ugh. I relate very much to this. I'm incredibly sensitive to noise while my wife (who sleeps like a log!) just flat out isn't. I will say that meditation has helped immensely. I will also say that I use a lot of industrial grade earplugs:)
I swear by these Leight earplugs.
You might also want to get a white noise machine (or run a fan) to help.
In addition, you might spend some time meditating on your reactions to the noise. Generally, the noise is the trigger for me but it's my own generated anger, frustration, intolerance, etc that is really torturing me. So spend some time looking at your feelings and your body's reactions. Note them as you see them. Concentrate on your breath. (You can do this as a contemplation if you prefer) The goal here is to catch your reactions and mollify them a bit, which should give you SOME level of relief. Good luck!

After living in prewar buildings in NYC for 15 years, I always sleep with a box fan and a Marpac Dohm white noise machine. The downside is that when I sleep at, for example, a hotel in a quiet city, I need to play some white noise from my phone or it feels too quiet and I become hyper aware.
You can potentially use something like Bose Sleepbuds, but they don’t even use active noise cancelling, they just mask the noise. When things are really popping off on my street, I just put in earplugs. For some reason, the Walgreens brand earplugs fit my ears best and seem really solid in blocking noise. I often go in to a Walgreens in the city, when I pass one, just to buy a pack.
I don’t think there is much you can do as a tenant to mitigate noise. Upgrading the windows would help, but not necessarily if your building has thin walls. Focus on personal noise reduction.

I have multiple of these sound machines (one lasted for 5 years until my daughter stood on it too much!):
And we got a Phillips Hue light bulb for her bedroom. It has a motion sensor you can get (this is what we use) or can be controlled from your phone. You can change the dimness or color, and put it on a timer if you'd like. We have our daughter's on a dim red light so we can still read to her at night but its not bright enough (or stimulating blue light) so she can still fall asleep, and if we need to go in her room, it can turn on and she won't notice. It also goes off after 3 minutes so we can just leave the room and it will turn off once it doesnt sense motion for awhile. She was always a terrible sleeper so this was a lifesaver as we didnt have to mess with finding a lamp and clicking it on/off etc. It is fairly expensive, so we did it as a Christmas present, but I think its paid for itself a million times over in the past three years!
You might need more than just the lightbulbs for initial setup (at least to get the motion sensor)? Not sure.
