I have been obessing over motherboards for the past several days b/c I got lucky with a ryzen 5800x on launch day. Both boards are great and have good vrms for power delivery. Biggest difference between them is the Asus has more usb ports on rear io. The msi has a usb c connection on the motherbiard. Currently the Msi b550 gaming edge is on sale on Amazon for 159.00

Whoa, thank you.... except I bought MSI MPG B550 Gaming Edge Wifi from Amazon on Oct 26, and 5600X on launch day from Best Buy. It says the mobo and CPU have to be in the same transaction... if they were I would have gotten $50 Steam credit. In fact, the 5000 series isn't part of the promotion, because it ended in October. Oops.

buddy, this board is on sale for $160 new on amazon right now...

This is the MB I went with, it's got built-in bluetooth and wifi so if for whatever reason you aren't able to connect directly you still have some options. My other MB was this though, it should be just as good but it doesn't have built-in bluetooth or wifi (the price difference between the two boards should be about as much as it'd cost to get a network card with bluetooth in it), so if you plan on hooking in the cable I'd go with the second one. I'm not sure how strong my rig is but it was about the $1000 range after it was all said and done, but I already had a keyboard and mouse plus monitor to work with.

should i get the MSI with wireless features and get a USB hub for more ports or get the Gigabyte and use a Wifi/Bluetooth card? anyone know if onboard wireless is better than wireless cards?

It's about $70 more expesnive than the cheapest mATX board I saw but I don't mind paying the extra. I'm seeing a lot of people recommend this and comparing it to the tomahawk. And it looks kind of cool lol

Your build is similar to what I’m working on now (though I’m doing Lian Li Lancool 2 mesh). A b550 would be a perfect choice for you. Do you need wifi? In my 100 year old house, I would have to make some wall holes to get a LAN connection, which isn’t worth it to me. If you’re planning on doing a hard line connection, you could sometimes save $5-$10 (which you can put towards fans, whatever else in your budget) by not getting a wifi version board. That said, the gaming edge wifi is $30 off, and if you combine it with this promotion you can get a $30 steam credit (x570 gives a $10 credit because they know it’s so sought after) effectively bringing the cost of this board to $130. That’s an amazing deal.

Also, do you need 32gb of ram? Are you planning to just game or do you need the multitasking capability for editing? You can save yourself another good chunk of cash there by going from 32gb 3600to 16gb 3600

Did you factor in the wifi card cost when getting that motherboard?

I'm looking to do a similar build for my friend. But when I look at the cheapest recommended motherboards, and all the expansion cards I want (USB C, wifi), it costs the same or more than a ~$200 motherboard.

My friend wants front and rear USB C and wifi 6. It seems like it's better getting a MSI B550 Gaming Edge Wifi for $190 than trying to get a ~$120 matx mobo and buying a $50 wifi card and $25 USB C adapter for front panel IO. You get a better quality board and less headache trying to make all the 3rd party components work.

What do you think?

ASUS ROG Strix B550-A Gaming thats a white motherboard, supports PCIe 4.0 and has 4 ram slots but it doesn't have wifi so you would need an adapter, but it is great for overclocking every USB spot is 3.0 except the bios ports and it has 2 slots for a m.2 and really just overall looks great

I got my B550 from MSI and its working perfectly fine with my Ryzen 3950x. So far no issues.
