https://www.amazon.com/dp/B089D1YG11/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_H2iKFb96TP5FR With that extra $50, I would spend 20 extra on a mobo with better overclocking support and wifi (even if the guy is going to use ethernet), and spend a couple more dollars on 3600 speed ram, or just keep the money, faster ram the better but 3200 is still completely good.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I have a b450m ds3h and it doesn't have as many features as I would like, but if it isn't necessary, spending 50 dollars less is still good.

I'm leaning towards this board - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B089D1YG11/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_PPKHFbYDWEQPW
Compare?

You could make it cheaper by getting one of these motherboards. Mini itx boards are usually more expensive.

Also I recommend a crucial p1 as your ssd because Samsung ones are usually overpriced.
The case you selected doesn't have good airflow. I'd recommend a phanteks p300a or a p400a.

Just one clarification. If you wanted wifi instead of ethernet, or otherwise want bluetooth connectivity, I would recommend This motherboard instead.

Why not b550?

I would upgrade the gpu. But if you do upgrade your cpu and ram I would go with a msi b550 pro vdh instead of the asus board https://www.amazon.com/MSI-B550M-PRO-VDH-ProSeries-Motherboard/dp/B089D1YG11/ref=mp_s_a_1_15?dchild=1&keywords=msi+b550&qid=1602097012&sr=8-15 Edit: ops I meant mobo

this vs the msi b550m pro vdh? this msi doesn't seem to be super popular and i'm not sure why.

You’re going to want a motherboard that has a AM4 cpu socket and that supports PCIe gen 4. I have a MSI B550M for my Ryzen 5 3600 and a Gigabyte 5600XT. This motherboard supports wifi, which is another reason I bought it, but if you don’t need it you can buy something similar and save a couple bucks.

If you are buyin for your sister maybe MSI B550M PRO-VDH WiFi

This is the board the person above is referring to. It's micro ATX, which means it will definitely fit inside your standard ATX case.

MSI B550M PRO-VDH WiFi ProSeries Motherboard (AMD AM4, DDR4, PCIe 4.0, SATA 6Gb/s, M.2, USB 3.2 Gen 1, Wi-Fi, D-SUB/HDMI/DP, Micro-ATX) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B089D1YG11/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glc_i_Z6U1FbFJJPTA6
$110 on Amazon for the board. Used should be $90. And $180 for a used 3600 is more than fair.

If you don't need wifi the B550m Pro4 is a very solid board for 10 dollars less than this
Edit: The Pro-VDH Wifi is available for the same price at Amazon rn if you're still interested

B550 matx seem decent for 100 bucks, similar priced with b450 boards. B450 Tomahawk was a popular one but priced has gone up on it. Just look at boards in your price range and what features you are looking for.

So, like this one?
It's a B550M like the one in my build :o

Motherboard:
- That motherboard is heavy overkill. A $110 MSI Pro-VDH Wifi is all you need.
Windows 10
- If you're a student, you may be able to get Windows 10 for free.
- If you already have a PC with Windows 10, your license is tied to your Microsoft account, so you just need to log into your account on the new computer to activate Windows. If not:
- Use Microsoft's Windows 10 creation tool to get free unactivated Windows 10. Download onto an 8GB or larger USB drive using your current computer. You will boot the new computer from the USB drive and install windows from there.
- The only downside is a watermark in the bottom corner of your screen
- You can always activate windows later if you choose.

Between this MSI B550 mobo and this ASUS B550 mobo, which would be a better option? I don't know enough about motherboards to immediately compare them
1 points • Shwato
Wifi mobos land around 100$+ so will total abit more(20$+). Though it'l also come with better everything. If you aren't that tight then you can go for B550M PRO-VDH WiFi/AORUS PRO Wi-Fi/B450M BAZOOKA MAX WIFI/GIGABYTE B450M DS3H WIFI.
Last two are budget friendlier though out of stock(Amazon/Newegg). No clue if they're available in other sites.
If you can't then imo it's fine. Regardless of revisions you're most likely gonna upgrade storage next anyway. And you've granted yourself the opportunity of getting a bigger/better nvme as you've bought time with the 2.5" start.
1 points • his-fatness
alright. i would get this board herethen, cheaper and just as good as the B450 pro carbon and with a better chipset, and it even has wifi. The only downside is that it's smaller and might look a bit silly in a big case haha, maybe get this here if you care about that

So, here's what I'd suggest with Amazon as the only seller: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/CuriouslyBuildingPC/saved/vfKVwP
There are alternatives, like...
Different motherboard, a more basic-looking one but it does have built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, maybe you'd like to have them: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B089D1YG11?pf_rd_r=YXZ9H4BA7SNPXRE4MXQY&pf_rd_p=6fc81c8c-2a38-41c6-a68a-f78c79e7253f
It's a similar build, just with a different motherboard, different RAM that is 3600MHz CL16, so slightly better, storage re-arranged in two drives, a good NVME drive with DRAM on it, the one you listed doesn't have DRAM and I would not suggest a DRAM-less SSD in 2020, plus a 2TB 7200RPM, a different RX 5700 XT model for a better price, a different case, a Micro-ATX one to match the motherboard and this case offers good airflow thanks to the two RGB fans at the front and the front mesh-panel, it has a glass side-panel and a PSU shroud, all for a good price, finally a good semi-modular 650W PSU, it's not cheap but I wouldn't cut corners on the PSU...
If you don't want an HDD and want instead a 1TB SSD I'd suggest this one, it has DRAM and a good price when compared to other models: https://www.amazon.com/CS3030-Internal-Solid-State-Drive/dp/B07MW9NJSH/ref=pd_ybh_a_1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=V485KGG63N0T2SKR4PA9
So... Thoughts on this?
