Uhhh, no to all of that...?

First of all, why are you turning a computer off ever? Put that thing to sleep and it'll wake up faster than a you could grab a cartridge off of a shelf.

Second of all, there are tons of couch options to use a computer:

https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Control-Touchpad/dp/B014EUQOGK/

https://www.amazon.com/Replacement-Wireless-Keyboard-Computer-Rechargeable/dp/B07H3K6PFD/

Third of all, if you're dedicated enough (and if you're modding consoles and setting up flash carts you should be), you can set up "front ends" that allow you to scroll through all of your games and consoles via controller similar to something like an NES Classic, you could even set it up to boot into that if you wanted.

Why is it that every time someone says emulation is no good, they never really understand the possibilities it affords?

Get one of these and it's not even janky to control it from your couch.

I know this isn't the exact keyboard, but it is similar (and you don't have to buy a whole kit for it), I wanted a keyboard like that Kano one and found this one from Logitech. It's wireless, comes with a USB dongle, and works great. I use it for my portable Raspberry Pi set up.

Yeah I think it's funny how people still argue couch gaming as being a console plus. You have been able to plug a computer into a TV since forever. Steam Big Picture was literally designed to be a couch gaming experience on PC...almost ten years ago.

Also if you want to even do pretty serious keyboard and mouse gaming there's things called lapboards: https://www.ign.com/articles/best-lapboards-for-gaming

For just media highly recommend this keyboard by the way: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B014EUQOGK

For controller just get an Xbox One controller adapter and any Xbox One controller, it works basically natively in Windows no special configuration and would say most big PC games support controller (unless they absolutely can't): https://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Xbox-Wireless-Adapter-Windows-one/dp/B00ZB7W4QU/

You can even plug a headset into the Xbox One controller and it works just fine for chat and audio.

Someone really needs to make a "couch gaming PC bundle" or advertise this more. People are always so shocked when they come to my house and see my setup. It was incredibly simple to set up and wow it's just like such a great experience.

I'd drop by a local thrift store honestly. I see a lot of small Dell monitors intended for schools & offices, and they cost almost nothing. You could keep something like this handy nearby for any non-VR input needs. (A wireless keyboard + touchpad like this is also really nice for stuff like using your desktop in Bigscreen)

A true headless VR setup is possible, but there's occasional aches and pains associated with it. You're not gonna want to troubleshoot Windows errors and such from inside VR.

There are actual keyboards with a full touchpad like a laptop.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B014EUQOGK/ref=cm_sw_r_em_apa_i_IBcSEbA9JEC6W

I also have the same device as you, but that touchpad is absolutely garbage, I can hardly get it to work under optimal conditions. I don't usually have trouble with a standard laptop touchpad even with sweaty hands, so I imagine the one I linked will be fine unless your hands are drenched.

I don't downvote, boss man, lol. You're wrong. Peruse my comment history if you don't believe me.

>Reading your comment it legitimately looks like a troll. Like I'm not insulting you, it literally looks like a parody of pc gamers. That and the "downvote because I disagree" is just childish. But I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt here.

Every word I said is accurate, and I did not downvote you, lol. Nothing I said is a parody, every word is truth.

>No... It's a PC capable of gaming.

That's a real good description of a gaming PC. lol.

> A gaming PC is a PC built specifically for gaming, but that does not mean the only thing you do on a gaming PC is game... It's a specific way of building a PC....a specialization.

Been building my own for 20 years, but thanks. Your PC is in another room because you want it in another room, and you have a console in your living room because you want it that way. Not because it needs to be.

>Excuse me, do you know what room it's in? Do you know what room my TV is in? I'm not sure what the point of this line is. Is it weird to you that I have a computer set up in my bedroom and my TV is in a different room? I'm not sure I've ever met someone different.

You said it's in another room, lol, I don't need to know what room. No, it's not weird. I'm saying you do it that way because you want it that way.

>And this is why I think this is a troll reply.

No, dude. It's taking the logic YOU USED and applying to your favorite thing to show you it doesn't make sense. What I said is no different than what you said, but you're calling me a troll for saying it.

>This post (which you've already harassed a dozen other people) is about how the OP prefers to play games on his PS5 over his PC.

I don't harass anyone. If you're literally offended by anything I've said that's a you problem, not a me problem.

>Then a comment (the one you replied to) states he doesn't like his PC in the living room with his Tv (like most people) and your solution to this is.... get a second PC?

That wasn't a solution or advice. I was stating, correctly, that if they wanted a PC in the living room they could have one. All of the other reasons they're stating simply don't make sense. Like saying "my computer is in another room, that's why I can't have a PC in the living room". That doesn't make sense.

Just say you don't want a PC in your living room, stop acting like it can't be done, lol. That's ridiculous.

>Do you see the contradiction here? Do you see the giant glaringly obvious irony in these statements?

I saw the contradiction in your words when I replied to them. Funny how when I turn your own words back in your direction you see it as a glaringly obvious contradiction. lol.

Yeah, I do have a pretty good idea of who I'm talking to. It rhymes with LAN PLOY.

>Do you know what I do with my PC outside of gaming? You don't right?

Nope. And I couldn't care less. It still has nothing to do with using a PC on a TV and using it to play from the couch. If you need your current PC where it is, great. If you wanted another PC in the living room you could have one, lol, you choose not to. You'd rather have a console in the living room, it's a simple as that. Just own that, lol, you don't need to make excuses or defend your favorite console. Nobody is attacking your console...

>o you don't know how much more it would cost me to get A WHOLE OTHER COMPUTER to match my non-gaming needs. Hint: It'll be more than a PS5. And why would I get a second PC? I have no use for one. You have a use for a second PC, but I don't. So why would I get one?

I know how much a PC costs, yes, I have several. So just say you don't want to spend the money on a PC. Why are you making all these other excuses about difficulty, etc, when at the end of the day it's simply your choice. lol.

>And why would I get a second PC? I have no use for one. You have a use for a second PC, but I don't. So why would I get one?

You wouldn't unless you wanted one. You don't want one, you prefer your console. That's fine. No need to make excuses or make fallacious arguments. You don't have a second PC because you don't want one. lol.

>TV is too big for normal PC usage

No it's not. Dozens of use HTPCs... Dozens of millions of us. This is a ridiculous, hilarious argument that makes no sense to anyone but you, mate. Seriously, this makes zero sense.

>I would have an extra monitor for no reason (woohoo let me sell it for $50 what a gain!) (also, since you seem to just assume my TV is better than my monitor, my monitor is higher quality than my TV. For gaming i don't care about quality or graphics, but why would I downgrade the rest of my PC quality? )

I haven't assumed anything about your TV, at all. Why do you argue against words that nobody has said? lol. My point was you wouldn't have to "tHRoW aWAy mY MoNItoR", that you were making a fallacious argument that makes no sense. That's literally absurd.

>How would I use my keyboard and mouse( because, you know, it's a COMPUTER) ? Would I put it on my lap? Would I get a table and awkwardly lean forward on my couch? Then I would just get a chair with a table so I can use my keyboard and mouse and wait.....that's just a desk. And then of course all those times I use my TV without my computer -- I would have to move the desk and chair out the way. So multiple extra unnecessary steps.

None of the above, mate. You're purposely trying to make something sound much harder and more difficult than it actually is. Why are you doing that, lol?

But if you just wanted the PC for gaming you would never need to use a keyboard, lol. A DS4 controller has a mouse on it already. You can still use an on screen keyboard for typing with a controller just like your console. Hell, you can even have something like Big Picture start @ boot, lol, you don't need a keyboard anymore than you need one for a console.

I'm sure this is all very confusing to you. But just because you're willfully unaware of something it does not make it not true. FYI.

>hmmm again.. pretending to know who I am.

Nope. This is just another straw man in a wall of text full of straw men.

>Let me tell you: I built my GAMING (note the definition of that) PC 9 years ago and have steadily been upgrading it. I have been playing games on my PC for a LONG TIME. As I've gotten older I've lost interest. PC gaming doesn't interest me anymore. I still play games on it (btw it's a GAMING pc i don't know if I said that yet) but only PC exclusives and even then only multiplayer with my friends.

Specs? lol.

But none of this has to do with anything I'm saying. That you call your PC a gaming PC doesn't change anything I've said.

>I'm also a masters in computer science and I'm saying this because I've been in the PC gaming community for quite a long time and I know the immediate response to any criticism of PC gaming is "you're just too dumb for technology".

Then why are you making using a computer in the living room sound so difficult? That makes zero sense, mate, because most of your arguments read exactly like "you're just too dumb for technology". Sorry. You're not making any sense at all.

>Also "confusion" ? Who said I was confused? I'm not confused about anything (besides why you seem to not understand opinions) and I don't know why you went out of your way to be a dick.

I didn't go out of my way. I said I understand your confusion. You're talking about the hassle of picking a graphics setting and describing how you'd have to essentially set up a desk in your living room to use a PC on a television. It's hilarious, mate, absolutely hilarious. You are very much obviously confused. Nothing you're saying is true, lol. Just sayin'.

>Did I say anything about REMOVING my GPU?

Yeah. Yeah you did, lol. You said you had to, quote, "disable my entire graphics card". That is no different than removing it, lol, and everything I said is still accurate. Again... Not all computers have integrated graphics. Removing the graphics card, or, uhh, disabling it, lol, will render many computers unusable. Notice the person in your video had integrated graphics? Yeah. Seems like somebody had conflicting drivers and didn't realize it, there was no reason to disable the card, lol.

Masters in Computer Science... lmao. Okie dokie.

>Oh but you already know "what type of person" you're dealing with right?

Yeah. A fanboy.

>You seem to pretend to know everything about every issue I've had with games. "You didn't have to do that" oh really? You knew that already?

I don't pretend to know everything about anything. I do know that you will never have to disable a graphics card to play a game, and on the off chance you actually did, that's a game problem, not a PC problem. Would mean the game is broken. But what you showed me in your video was not only not necessary, but not possible for someone without integrated graphics.

>You need to stop being so sensitive to others opinions.

The irony is palpable. Read your post. This entire conversation exists because you felt slighted by someone talking about a PC. I could not care less what you play on, but when you make wildly inaccurate statements about something, and I see it, then I'll probably try to set you straight. This has nothing to do with being sensitive about other people's gaming preferences. lol.

>I never made any judgements about you or anything. I didn't angrily downvote you for disagreeing with me.

And more hypocrisy from you while accusing me of being hypocritical:

>I didn't angrily downvote you for disagreeing with me.

You straight up say you're not judging me, but you've judged me several times in your last comment for something you incorrectly assumed about me.

You can get a wireless bluetooth keyboard/trackpad combo for $25. I don't have a firestick, so I don't know how USB is setup on that particular device, but I have successfully used these keyboards on xBox, PS4, Steam Link, two different smart TVs, etc. They last a couple years on one set of batteries and they are small enough to fit under the couch when not in use.

Its a bit bulky..but I don't like the texting ones and I do need a mouse pad and I enjoy using a keyboard traditionally.

Thanks! Yea, if you have a link to the switches and maybe to the wiring, that would be great. I bought a Vandal switch from Ali Express that’s super pretty, but it has so many prongs, that I’ve never figured out exactly how it’s supposed to be wired.

I’ve got all my stuff plugged into a smart surge protector and then have that wired to a plug. I can power the whole system from a rocker switch on that plug, but like you said...that results in a cold shutdown to the computer. So at some point I need to wire the computer to an external switch, instead of opening the coin door and reaching in to power it on every time.

I almost mapped mouse buttons, but I ended up getting a wireless keyboard/trackpad that’s been really handy. It sounds like you already have a solution you’re happy with, but

Been having trouble figuring this one out:

Have a rpi3b. Set it up to be airprint server. I got a wireless keyboard (this one) and setup vnc access and it's headless.

Here's the trouble. If I leave the little usb receiver for the keyboard plugged into the pi all the time, no issues, the pi is always up and accessible via vnc. Even with the keyboard turned off.

If I take out the usb receiver, the pi is no longer accessible. If I boot the pi without the receiver, it never comes up, can't remote in no matter what, no vnc, no ssh, can't even ping. If I plug in the receiver while it's up, it won't come up until I reboot with the receiver in.

I did find that power save was on on wlan0, but that shouldn't affect access right after boot.

Running stock Raspbian with not much else done other than airprint. It had this issue before I did the airprint stuff with just stock raspbian. Networking is wifi, nothing else plugged in.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

You might check out this keyboard.

Also wtf it is only 25 dollars. This is actually my favorite keyboard to use from the couch. I honestly prefer using that keyboard and an xbox controller to playing on a console although we have consoles.

The way you hold it is nice, usually keyboards don't do a great job of dealing with mouse movement. However, when you are holding this keyboard you click with your left hand and move around with the right, it is very nice, you should buy it.

Might be worth picking up a wireless keyboard with a trackpad to keep on your coffee table. Half the time I get the TV turned on, swap my display to it from my desk, pick up a controller, sit back down, and then remember I still need to use my mouse to launch the damn game lol.

Otherwise, tablet mode + this keyboard/trackpad (https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Control-Touchpad/dp/B014EUQOGK/) make do nicely without fiddling with custom remotes.

Assuming it's a tower, what if you just put a super small basic monitor literally sitting on the tower and get a wireless all-in-one keyboard/trackpad like the Logitech K400 you could accomplish this with less fiddling. The keyboard is only $25 and a cheap used small 60hz monitor would be no more than $30 like this one.

I was having range issues using a Bluetooth mouse with my pi4, max usable distance being \~2 meters, so I decided to buy an rf USB keyboard assuming that the Bluetooth chip onboard the pi was weak. Now I have the new keyboard, but I'm getting the same awful and inconsistent range. The keyboard works at the advertised distance of 10 meters on other devices (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B014EUQOGK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1), so I'm wondering if the pi is struggling to power the Bluetooth/USB receiver chip since it's also powering an SSD as a boot drive. Has anyone else encountered this, and if so, did a powered USB hub solve the problem?

Edit: forgot to mention that I haven't received an under-powered error notification in the GUI on the raspberry pi os.

I don't care about the OS, I want my phone apps. Web Browser, finance, media, social media, games, etc. from my couch. Optimized for TV would be nice, but I'm ok with a couple more button presses.

The walled garden with watered down TV apps is garbage, and it's ridiculous that we put up with it. Why isn't there a Chrome Web Browser on Google TV? Why do we have to use strange substitute apps?

The main thing to find out is if your USB-C port on your phone supports using it for video out, and not just for charging/data. If is does you could connect to a display with a USB C to HDMI adapter. In addition:

Bluetooth keyboards like the Logitech K480 is a good choice in my opinion will work as keyboards in Android - any app including Gmail, Docs, Office, etc. will work fine. The Logitech K400 Plus is both a keyboard and a touchpad if you don't want to get a separate mouse, but it's not Bluetooth it has a USB-A dongle. Grab a home screen like Taskbar when you connect to a display. You can pick up a little dongle like this Anker USB-C hub which has USB-A ports (if you're not doing bluetooth) and HDMI out which you can send to a monitor.

Far as I can tell, both Google Docs and Microsoft Office support common keyboard combinations like CTRL+C, CTRL+V, CTRL+B for bold, etc.

You may run into two issues with apps:

  1. Some apps are locked to a specific screen orientation. If the app developer has set the app to work in Portrait mode only (only if their landscape mode looks terrible) you're not going to have a good time with that app.
  2. The mouse scroll wheel automatically gets translated to scrolling on Android like you would with your finger, but some apps will scroll backwards instead of how you expect.

If you want something easy, I have a super simple Powerpoint-based solution. MINIX sells this Mini PC on Amazon for $219:

It has some nice features:

  • It's cheap (PC pre-loaded with Win10 Pro = $219)
  • You can set it to auto-boot upon receive power in the BIOS
  • You can set it to run a program in Windows using Start > Run > shell:startup (copy a shortcut to say a Powerpoint presentation)
  • You can add TightVNC for quick remote access (put a password on it, disable Java access, and change the port for security)
  • VESA mountable
  • Fanless (no junk gets sucked inside it)

Walmart sells super-cheap "dumb" TV's. Here's a 50" 4K For $225:

Or a 65" 4K for $400:

If you need something a bit smaller, they have a 43" 1080p set for $170. The graphics look better on a 4K screen set to 1080p resolution though, FYI:

If you want to level-up your static display game, Affinity Publisher is on sale for $25:

So the setup is:

  1. Mount TV
  2. Mount PC
  3. Setup PC with display software (ex. Powerpoint Viewer)
  4. Setup Powerpoint file the way you want it to be displayed full-screen
  5. Setup Windows to load the Powerpoint file at boot
  6. Use VNC to remote-control it & change the file as needed
  7. Use Powerpoint to design the layout (or something like Affinity to do it fancier)

PiSignage will give you more control (tickers & so on), but if you just want a dirt-simple digital signage setup, a MINIX box + a non-smart Sceptre TV + Powerpoint does the job just fine. If you want to control it directly, Logitech's K400 wireless keyboard & trackpad is on sale for $25:

I've setup tons of digital signage like this. Most people throw a VNC viewer on their laptop or smartphone/tablet & just remote in to change the display file as needed (can copy/paste files over & then remote-control the screen to launch it). Here's a link:

Couldn't be easier - no server to run, pretty cheap compared to commercial alternatives (\~$500 total for TV + VESA mount + Mini PC + wireless keyboard/trackpad). Most people are familiar with Powerpoint (and if not, it's easy to learn) or you could even do something as simple as a full-screen PDF page, if you just want a simple static menu.
