I am very new to monitors and all this terminology. If I buy a ps5 with a monitor like this: would it output 4k just fine? I also have a mediocre 1080p office computer, would switching displays between the ps5 and computer automatically downscale the settings? Or will it try to stretch it terribly?

Get a tv or a cheaper 4k monitor like this. Its unlikely that 1440p is supported. That monitor isn't even good for the price, I'd rather get a lg 27gl850-b.

LG UL500 for $279, 27" IPS 4K monitor.

It has Freesync 40-60hz range so will help with 60fps games running in that range and Xbox supports Freesync too.

It has HDR but is better left disabled on Xbox/PC as the panel does not have the hardware to generate an accurate HDR image.

Finding an all-white monitor that meets your needs is difficult. I should know, I just recently found and ordered mine to complete my all-white build.

Your friend will potentially have to make some compromises here. 24" and 4k is an uncommon (but available) combo. All-white is uncommon for a monitor. Put them together and you're getting a unicorn. Here are some compromise options if your friend will consider them.

  • Samsung 24SH850 - 24" and 1440p, all white.
  • LG 27UL500-W - White body and 4k, but the downsides are that it's 27", has a silver stand (replace with a white VESA arm/stand), and the front facia is black. This is incredibly common in "white" displays.
  • LG 27UD69-P - Same as the UL500 above, but the stand is white. So a slightly better option, but you'll notice I didn't link it. It's harder to find as it went out of production a year or so ago.

If your friend is willing to settle for 1440p instead of 4k, the Samsung above is the closest he'll get to that unicorn today, as far as I can see.

Best of luck in your search!

I'm thinking about scooping two LG 27UL500's without stands for ~$350 each since I'm going to be all online for university this fall (Comp Sci major, so lots and lots of programming), I was wondering if there's any better 4K displays within that price range that I should consider? I have a 2016 13" MacBook pro I'm hooking up to them via Display Port on a thunderbolt hub if that means anything

That's a 1080p VA monitor, not really that great, if you want 144hz, you sacrifice picture quality and resolution, if you want picture quality and resolution, you sacrifice 144hz.

Here's a 4K monitor with HDR10 for $100 more, you'd be sacrificing 144hz, but the PS5 likely wont be able to hit 120hz in games for very long.

Budget: \~$450 USD

Prospective Resolution: 4K or 1440p

Size: 27"

Aspect Ratio: N/A

Adaptive Sync: N/A

Other Features: USB-C would be nice. Maybe IPS if it makes sense

Usage Type: Programming/Coding and PS4/PS5

I'm sitting down here and looking at monitors. And well, quite frankly I'm getting overwhelmed with the amount of options, and jargon. I cannot decide between 4K or 1440p. Or what refresh rate I should have (right now the logical one seems to be only 60 Hz)

The monitor's primary use will be used for programming/coding. It'll also have a PS4 and/or PS5 attached to it from time to time. As well, I'd like to have a dual monitor setup down the line.

Here's some monitors I keep on coming across as possible suggestions. If anyone has input, that'd be great!

I built my PC less than 2 months ago, and realize I should have gotten a different GPU.

Here is my current build.

I don't do intensive gaming. I'm currently only doing Civ VI. But even with that game the GPU runs loud and warm. I'm concerned that if I do expand into more intensive games, the current GPU just won't cut it.

But most importantly, I think I want to invest in a new monitor. Potentially something 4k. Like this one. I'm virtually certain the current GPU can't handle 4k very well, which is the main reason for the upgrade.

I'm not looking to break the bank, but would appreciate realistic GPU replacement options compatible with my current build + new monitor.

Also, since used PC parts are new to me, where should I try and unload my current GPU?

When you mentioned using an Xbox one X I thought I'd have trouble selecting monitors that would go with it, but some reviews came in clutch mentioning how the two pair.

This Asus would be your best bet. It's 4K and has freesync with which your Xbox can utilize to smooth FPS and prevent screen tearing. There's also a few different versions of the monitor on that page you can also look at, the IPS monitor shown will give you better colour accuracy and colour gamut coverage. And if you could reason going $40 above budget you could get HDR support with this LG monitor. Both have reviews saying that they work great with the one X.

I hope this helps.

Budget: $300-$350

Prospective Resolution: 3840x2160

Size: Any

Aspect Ratio (16:9, etc.): -

Adaptive Sync: Any Adaptive Sync compatible with nVidia over Displayport 1.4 (for HDR+Adaptive Sync use)

Other Features (list other ir-relevant features here): HDR even if it's weak at this price range, i know what i'm getting on this budget as long as it's not a big extra on the price.

Usage Type: Single-Player Gaming and Media Viewing.

I'm currently looking at the LG 27UL500 ($300 on Amazon) and the LG 27UL650 ($347 on Amazon), both are on sale on Amazon, tho stock seems to be dwindling as the 550 is out of stock for the $300 price it was on earlier. As far as i know both monitors are nearly identical with the 650 offering better HDR at "HDR 400". Is this a good purchase at this price or is it worth waiting for better between now and monday, and is the 650 worth the extra, it is just barely on the edge of breaking my budget.

I have a question about my monitor:

I'm new to PC gaming and I just bought this LG 4K, 60HZ free sync monitor from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07PGL2WVS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 However, I’m still within the return window. I am wondering if I should return this monitor and buy a 1440p 144hz monitor. If so, do you have any recommendations? For reference, I also just bought the Alienware R10 with AMD 7 3700X and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 Super and am looking for a monitor primarily for gaming purposes. I play COD (war zone), League, Assassins Creed, etc. Thank you so much!!

Two very different options:

1080p with high refresh rate, best for games that render at above 60fps and require minimal input lag and very fast motion:

https://www.amazon.com/BenQ-XL2411-Equalizer-Vibrance-Competitive/dp/B01H5KKQTM/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=1080p+144hz&qid=1601922970&sr=8-3

4k monitor with HDR. Better visuals, but only 60 fps:

https://www.amazon.com/LG-27UL500-W-27-Inch-Freesync-Technology/dp/B07PGL2WVS/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=4k+monitor+ips&qid=1601922988&sr=8-3

4k monitors that have refresh rates above 60 exist, but they're extremely expensive. You'd probably end up spending more on the monitor than the console, though that's not that farfetched in the first place, seeing as OLED is my personal choice for console gaming anyways.

Currently looking at monitors as I currently have a 1080p 60hz that I need to upgrade from.

While I would like to do the whole shabang with a 4k 144hz monitor, my college student budget does not really allow for that. I'm interested in getting a 4k 60hz model because I feel that it fits my interests best.

I think I have narrowed it down to these two monitors:

LG (currently a prime day deal)

Asus

I'm curious as to what others think about the two options and if they will fit my wants or not. Also if there are better options elsewhere I would love to check them out!

Do you think this computer can run 4k? This monitor is on sale for prime day, but I have a hard time comparing the monitor that you recommend and this one. The one you suggested has a higher refresh rate, but I've read that above 60 hertz it matters a bit less, so I'm not sure the pluses and the minus between the two.

i’ve spent weeks researching and educating myself on monitors and i will admit i am out of my depth.

i’m a graphic designer by trade and also do video and audio editing.

when working i often have multiple browser tabs open for reference and need ample space for my software (mostly adobe products video/audio editing software).

i’m trying to keep a low budget and am either going with dual 27” monitors or one ultra wide curved monitor.

i’m working off a 2018 15” macbook pro and will connect my external display(s) with a hub made for dual 4k @ 60hz

i think i’ve narrowed it down to two monitors but would like opinions from people more knowledgeable in monitors.

option 1: BenQ PD2700U 27 inch 4K Monitor

BenQ PD2700U 27 inch 4K Monitor for Designers 3840x2160 UHD IPS Panel with AQCOLOR 100% Rec.709, sRGB; Factory-calibrated; DualView, Eye-Care, Anti-Glare, Gray https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07H9XP92N/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fabc_n6WTFbB5E75RA

option 2:

LG 27UL500-W 27-Inch UHD

LG 27UL500-W 27-Inch UHD (3840 x 2160) IPS Monitor with Radeon Freesync Technology and HDR10, White https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07PGL2WVS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fabc_pkXTFb8SD15BV?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

both are within my price range for a dual monitor setup but i am not a pro at determining specs and would really appreciate an expert opinion.

i’m also open to any curved monitor suggestions that would suit my needs (if one exists, i really don’t know).

thanks to the community in advance! i’ve been a long times lurker first time poster.

But, do consider going with the 24" version (or 2 of them, like me :)). Reason being: if you want proper "retina effect" and the least tax on your video card, you need to have 200% scaling of the UI. With a 5K monitor, this results in a "hi-dpi" version of a 1440p-sized desktop (perfect for 27") but 4K monitors at 200% = a 1080p-sized desktop. This is perfect on a 24", but I hate it on a 27". If I had the money I spent on 2x 24" 4K monitors at the time, I may have just sprung for the 27" 5K but, I'm glad I didn't because the LG Ultrafine 5k's don't seem to have particularly great reviews. I'm happy how things turned out and the single 24" 4K + iMac 5K served me well over the past couple years.

This monitor has 144hz 1 ms response and has 1440p resolution. It's really hard to find a 4k monitor with a 144hz refresh rate under 700 dollars. Normally I would have gone for a 4k 60 Hz monitor but then I feel like you aren't taking advantage of all the high-end parts that you invested into.

https://www.amazon.com/LG-27UL500-W-27-Inch-Freesync-Technology/dp/B07PGL2WVS/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=monitor&qid=1595730783&refinements=p_n_feature_fifteen_browse-bin%3A17751804011&rnid=17751799011&s=pc&sr=1-2&th=1

But in case you need a 4k monitor this monitor is 4k 60hz with and IPS panel so its picture quality will be very good.

Hope this helps!

Both have hdr. I sit close to my monitor, and it's kinda big for me. If you sit far you might need a bigger monitor, but I think if you're at a reasonable distance there will be no problem. Keep in mind these do not have audio built into them. I think the first link is better to be honest, but I think both options are solid. They also only go to 60hz doesn't do 120 or 144hz..

Its really a matter of opinion but I would lean towards 4k for those kinds of games if you can fit it into your budget. Honestly this https://www.amazon.com/BenQ-EL2870U-Anti-glare-Brightness-Intelligence/dp/B078HWN5CX/ref=sr_1_8?dchild=1&keywords=benq+monitor&qid=1595081585&sr=8-8 monitor runs the same cost as the 1080 one that you linked to. Its not as good as this https://www.amazon.com/LG-27UL500-W-27-Inch-Freesync-Technology/dp/B07PGL2WVS/ref=psdc_1292115011_t3_B078HWN5CX monitor that I mentioned before but it does come in $50 dollars cheaper. It gets knocked for being a TN panel, but I think its still a good 4k budget monitor. The reviews suggest that the HDR is not great on it, but HDR on these monitors isn't great all around.

For the kinds of games you like to play I don't think you would be disappointed with either of those options. Its something to shoot for anyways if you decide to take the 4k route.

Yah, that's what I've been doing, I was just trying to explore another method of gathering information before making a decision. Also kind of hoping someone would suggest a monitor I have not considered yet.

I'm struggling with deciding on making the switch to 1 ultrawide or stick with 2 monitors. I like the idea of using one monitor that rotates into portrait mode for coding, but I also like the idea of using only 1 ultrawide and doing split screen. I know 1st world problems lol.

27" seems to be the sweet spot for me if I don't go the ultrawide route. And I am heavily considering:

Sad part is what Intel already have 4K 10bit H265 support at least starting from Kaby Lake R and will bring AV1 support with Tiger Lake in August-September.

Yeah, they can't give you the same HDR experience like OLED TV, but 4K HDR is something to keep in mind when buying new hardware now.
