The receiver can run 5.2. Better models will have better room correction, more IO, and more channels.

BTW, I noticed a few minutes ago the Jamo S803 5.0 kit is only $200. You save $100 and get surrounds. It has the worse S81 centre channel but it is only a slight downgrade.
Brand matching is not only unnecessary for subwoofers but detrimental. Speaker companies like to build compact and appealing products, but good subs are bulky and engineered for maximum output.

I agree with this strategy. Buy a used av receiver, keep a lookout for something really cheap, they come around pretty often. Here's another option for the 5.1 system. A little more expensive considering no sub but I would say worth it

Generally you would want your speakers at ear level, so putting them in the cabinet would not be ideal. Best placements would be on stands next to the TV or floor standing speakers. You could place bookshelf speakers on top of the cabinet if you had enough room for the TV. This Jamo set on Amazon is pretty good deal if you can find room for 5 speakers. If you're looking for 2 atm I think deciding on what type/size you're looking for will help narrow it down. The set SmittyJonz linked on Ebay looks pretty good too.

Jamo 5.0 system for $200. Sell the rears, start at $100 and hopefully keep the price over $75.
Get a refurb receiver or find something used off craigslist/FB marketplace. Anything made in the last 10 years is probably good enough for you for the time being (Dolby TrueHD/DTS-MA, and HDMI pass-through/switching). Low ball someone until you get the price you need, should be able to figure out something in the $100-150 range if you're lucky. I've got a pair of 7.1 early 2010s receivers going for $60 and $80 within an hour of me based on a quick CL search.
Last, get either a Dayton Sub-1000 or Sub-1200 depending on how much more you want to stretch your budget, and save $20 for a cheap sub cable and speaker wire - I'm assuming you already have some HDMI cables.

I'd get this surround setup from Jamo. Add in an SVS SB1000 and a cheap Denon receiver. I'd rather have the bookshelf speakers and a better sub instead of towers and a worse sub in a smaller room.

The 5.0 set called the S803 HCS is on sale often for $199-$219, it includes a pair of S803 with a pair of smaller S801 and C81 center channel. That's a deal.
$126 for the S803 alone is a good buy, you have the start of a decent 5.1 setup if you go that route.

I would say look into amazon Jamo listings as well.
It’s a 5.0 system for $199 new. As the other redditor mentioned the Polk sub isn’t good so I would save up and look into getting an SVS subwoofer.

Check out the Jamo S803 HCS setup. At $199 for a 5.0 setup, it's amazing. The S803's alone are worth that. Check out reviews and other posts on here for the S803's. For all the speakers you listed for the 5.0 setup, you're at about $350.

I purchased this Jamo set last week, it has the S81 Cen but includes the whole 5.0 for $200. Was too hard for me to pass up. I am hoping the white set drops to that price too as I like the look better.

I am pairing them with a refurbished Denon X2400H from Accessories4Less for $320. (Not sure if these are still available, but I think that site offers the best value.)
That leaves room in your budget for a cheap sub also. I went with a BIC Formula F12 for $210 on Amazon, but some also recommend the Dayton SUB-1200 as entry level options.
I also got some Polk OWM3 speakers for $100 to use as Atmos speakers for a 5.1.2 setup, but that would exceed your stated budget.

$300 total is very limiting. but if you can spend a bit more you could go with these 2 but it will be a bit more complex but will also sound much better. this is missing a subwoofer but that could always be added later. your money would also go much further if you went used.

My suggestion is get Jamo S803 5.0 and Denon x1500h. Then save every penny until you can afford a good subwoofer from the likes of SVS, HSU, Rythmik, PSA, or Monoprice's Monolith series. That's what I did and while there's definitely some pitfalls to the kit, most notably the center channel but it should sound miles better than any htib/soundbar and you can't really do much better for $200(I spent $400 on it over a year ago for what it's worth). Subwoofer is what makes a system really so spending $500+ on good subs is completely worth it. If I were doing it again and knew how much I would enjoy this hobby I would have invested more as I can see the value now in getting a quality front stage. The 803s are eventually going to my sides with the 801s and 81c being repurposed as my garage speakers but my plan is to get room accostics and placement perfect before I even bother with upgrading.

First Time Budget 5.1 Setup
Hello everyone! I hope you are all staying safe and healthy. I am thinking about pulling the trigger on this budget 5.1 setup to be used with a 75" Sony 950G TV in a few months. Please tell me what I could change either to improve or downgrade (if neccesary). Budget is around $600 for everything. Thank you all!

Denon x1600h from accessories4less for $400. Rsl speedwoofer 10s $400 from Rsl direct. Jamo s803 5.0 set $200.
Or just the Denon x1600h and this Jamo 5.1 set for $600. It comes with the better s83 center and the s809 floorstanding speakers versus the s803 bookshelf speakers. You sacrifice the subwoofer quality, but you gain some great speakers.

I can't even remember all the speakers I looked at, part of the problem was I started with replacing a cheap radio shack 5 speaker system from probably 15 years ago. Purchased a 5 speaker setup of Micca speakers, after ordering the delivery time frame was 3 weeks and I was itching to get something right then. So I ended moving my budget up. So between starting with a whole system that cost just over $300 and then eventually deciding to buy just 2 speakers for the same price, I researched everything from above/below.
My setup is 90% or more HT. Whereas yours sounds like it's for music. So I think we'd be looking for very different things. However, had it not been for great reviews of the center speaker options I would have bought these Jamos - it's a killer deal IMO. The front speakers by themselves are worth the price.
I didn't really look at the JBL's too much or the Klipsch, at the price point I was at I didn't think anything from Klipsch would be better than at least a few other options. Klipsch was what actually got me started with the whole process because they're basically giving away their stuff.
I think the speakers I was going back and forth with last were the Wharfedale Diamond 225. I think these are great speakers and would probably be great for music.
I ended up with the KEF's because everyone and everywhere I looked, they seemed like a speaker you couldn't go wrong with. Everyone was really impressed with how they sounded whether for music or HT.

The first link wouldn't work for me, but if you're on a budget and looking to get a basic 5.1 setup, something along the lines of the below will work:
1 points • MistaHiggins
You're smart for thinking about the center. It super does matter for anything that isn't music. None of my friends believed me that it was as important as I told them it was, until they themselves finally got one.
Is it a package of the Q150 + Denon for $200? If so, that's a good deal. The Q150 are $299 on Amazon right now and that's essentially a $50 receiver. The Denon 1911 supports Dolby Digital Plus which is what every streaming service uses for 5.1, and that's very important to have. However, the receiver would also require everything you watch run at 1080p since it doesn't support arc. My parents had one, and I eventually had to sell it and get them something more recent because of those restrictions. Its being sold that cheap for a reason.
The Q250 is the matching center for the Q150, but many people also just use a single Q150 because of the coaxial design.
Another option would be the Jamo S803 5.0 set for $199. Link. You could make an argument that the Q150 is maybe better than the S803, but its very difficult to make a performance/dollar argument as long as they're selling that 5.0 kit for $199.
I would advocate for that 5.0 set for $199 and a modern receiver such as the X1600 for $369 with 3 yr warranty same as new. This would put you at $568 leaving room for speaker wire and still be under $600. Since you don't need/want a subwoofer given your living situation, you can worry about that down the road. You will be more than impressed with either the Q150 or the Jamo S803 set, they'll both put you in another level than that Vizio sound bar.

Denon X1600H $400
SVS PB-1000 $500
Jamo 5.0 $199
Polk OWM3 $100 for ATMOS as height speakers. If you're doing in ceiling several speakers in the $100 range are decent

Hey!
As you probably noticed, many people here are quite against buying a soundbar, that's because it's usually just a bad investment.
I'm telling this as someone who purchased a soundbar and truly regretted.
Setting up a home theater setup is not as hard as you may think, and tbh it's much more fun because it allows for much greater customization, so every setup is pretty much unique!
You mentioned getting a Atmos setup for under $1000, that's not really that challenging, lemme give you a basic setup example:
- Receiver: Denon AVR-S950H - U$ 449.99
- Subwoofer: BIC F12 - U$ 209.99
- Front speakers: Dayton Audio MK402X - U$ 59.98
- Center speaker: Dayton Audio MK442 - U$49.97
- Surround speakers: Dayton Audio MK402X - U$ 59.98
- Height speakers: Polk Audio OWM3 - U$ 119.00
- Subwoofer cable - U$ 8.52
- Speaker Wire Cable - U$ 13.49
Total: U$ 970.92
A great option for the 5 channels would be the Jamo S 803 HCS, unfortunally it's currently unavailable, it used to be $199.

At first I was going to go with three dayton audio c452 airs because they'd fit on the 5 inch deep shelf, but I think their sound quality would leave me wanting, and I'd rather do it right off the bat. I could also raise the tv on a shelf because the cabinet is module, and then have like 8 or so inches under it to place speakers. Preferrably sealed or front firing. Putting in speaker stands off to the side or something is not an option. I think these are my current options:

1.) One pair of parts express C-Notes laid horizontally and one parts express c-note mtm center, total $200, wow that price is great. I could easily afford a subwoofer and even easily grab another pair of c-notes to put in rear-l and rear-r and complete the 5.1 at this point. That's like was 450 for the full 5.1? Oh baby maybe this is the way... https://www.parts-express.com/c-note-mt-bookshelf-speaker-kit-pair-with-knock-down-cabinets--300-7140 .. the drawback is they would be rear ported and maybe booming inside the cabinet. cabinet about 2.5 feet deep. honestly it would probably be okay.

2.) Three Ascend Acoustics HTM-200SEs for about 500 total shipped http://www.ascendacoustics.com/pages/products/speakers/htm200/htm200.html way more expensive but if I'll be happier in the long run that's cool.

3.) Three S200 MTMs for about 500 total shipped https://www.diysoundgroup.com/home-audio-speaker-kits/home-audio-type/home-audio-2-way/s2000-mtm-kit.html would this be drastically better than the htm-200ses? Probably? I could also save about 50 bucks by using the MTs for the l/r channnels instead of doing three MTMs but I figure for 50 bucks might as well ante up

4.) Two KEF Q150s for $270 https://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/kefq150blk/kef-q150-5.25-2-way-bookshelf-speaker-black-pair/1.html and some type of matching center, dunno what maybe a micca or something

5.) Jamo s803 set for $200 https://www.amazon.com/Jamo-Studio-803-HCS-BLK-Cinema/dp/B07JJ5VKHL/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?keywords=jamo+set&qid=1578765810&sr=8-1-fkmr0 and the bookshelves are front-ported which is nice, but I think the c note might be better SQ at this price?

6.) HiVi 3.1 bookshelf diy speaker kit for $300 https://www.amazon.com/HiVi-Bookshelf-Speakers-Near-Field-Speaker/dp/B0721ZQXDG/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=speaker+kit&qid=1578766645&sr=8-3 these look pretty sweet actually
