I use these and they work pretty well. Only annoyance is you have to plug them in and it usually takes about 12 hours for them to dry completely so they can be put back.

I'd also recommend picking up a silicone cloth. Give everything a good wipedown and it'll help keep everything clean.

I bought this dehumidifier that's renewable. Once it's soaked, just plug it in and heat evaporates all the moisture. It's not a perfect solution though. I in Florida where humidities reach crazy levels ☠️ and even with the dehumidifier it can only go down to 50%. Aside from investing a ton of money into an electric dehumidifier, there's not much more I can do. And with me moving to Utah in January (where it'll be nice and dry) it's not worth the investment.

Better than nothing. I use an old cheapo cooler which works good enough. You could add weatherstrip if you want better seal

I'd swap silica gel packs with rechargable dessicant

Which is just silica with an indicator and built in heater to recharge it

I think it's really similar to this one and reading the description / reviews about how it "charges" will give you an idea that it's not a small version of a regular dehumidifier (where you have to empty out a water tank or attach a hose) but rather uses desiccant. You can see the desiccant in the middle; it'll change color when it becomes "full". So it's probably only good for very small spaces, like if you have a moldy cabinet or something. We just fill a tupperware with desiccant for these small area issues so I wonder if this contraption could do any better.

This is a copy and paste of a comment I left on another similar post a while back:

I use two of these mini dehumidifiers in my manga room and keep the door closed so that they can handle the small space. These don't use power to work, but when the color meter has changed, you plug them into a well ventilated area to remove the moister. I plug them into the bathroom outlet and turn on the ventilation fan for that. They create heat while plugged in, so I don't recommend leaving the house while it's plugged in though!!!

This solved my wavy manga issue! Hope it helps!

ya analog hydrometers are far from reliable, mine showed 70% and i was buggin out till i got two digital ones that read just above 45% lol.

Best way to lower is to have some fans blowing, make sure your tank vents are uncovered, or have an ac running nearby. If all else fails, I was able to knock it down a little by hooking up two closet dehumidifers:

Yeah a non-conditioned garage can get surprisingly humid. Might want to look into a hard case or safe and use some thing like this: https://www.amazon.com/Improved-Eva-dry-333-Renewable-Dehumidifier/dp/B000H0XFCS

You might consider a small "rechargeable" dehumidifier unit like this. I don't have any personal experience with that—just saw it in another thread—but I guess it's full of silica beads and when it gets full of moisture you plug it in and it heats up and dries out. What I don't know is if it's safe to have at different orientations other than upright—like if it's in your case being moved around is it gonna LEAK all over the expensive equipment?

Good call on the dehumidifier! I don’t have power run in there, and it’s not super big, so I grabbed one of these things in the interim. Thanks for the tip!

I used some of the generic felt with 3/8” plywood for my door re-lining project and I think it’s working out pretty well. Finishing touches tomorrow.

It's wrong though. They get used up real quick, like days. You can buy dehumidifiers though, with beads that change color as they absorb moisture, then you plug them in every now and then to heat up and dry out, and repeat the process.

This is what I have: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000H0XFCS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_0m1qFb8PKT5WA

I use an old chest freezer with an inkbird and never have a problem with frosting because the freezer is never on long enough to build up a layer. I keep a gel dehumidifer in the freezer and run a small desk fan 24/7 to keep the air moving.

I've been using an air tight storage container and a gun safe rechargeable dehumidifier. Maintains 25% humidity and I haven't had to recharge it for months. Grant it I probably don't print as much as some and our air is pretty dry to start with. But seems to be working for my situation.

Cheapest way to prevent rusting guns in safe

I just moved and my safe is now in a basement that is pretty much a garage. This means they will be exposed to the heat and cold and I assume more moisture than they normally would. I'd like to make sure they don't rust on me so if someone can give me some things I can do that will cost me nothing or very little. I currently have 2 of these : https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000H0XFCS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 in the safe. Not sure if thats enough. One thing I was thinking was wrapping them in towels but not sure if that would do anything. Thanks

5 gallon buckets with rechargeable desiccant like this. Keeps humidity down to 10%. Also have a food dehydrator just in case. I print in my workshop, no a/c and print right out of fixed dry boxes mounted on walls. Just sterilite containers with spool mounts and a bit of tubing stuck out to feed printers. Humidity in workshop right now is 60% and gets up to 70-80%. Sweatbox!

I use a simple plastic box with an Eva Dry Renewable Mini Dehumidifier. (Just plug it into a wall outlet to renew it.) That drops the humidity from 50% outside to 20% in the box according to a hygrometer.

https://amazon.com/Improved-Eva-dry-333-Renewable-Dehumidifier/dp/B000H0XFCS/

The box doesn't have a rubber seal and the lid isn't a very tight fit, but this seems good enough for the PLA filament I'm using, I haven't had printing issues with it. I'd probably look for a better-sealing box if I had more finicky filament.

Thanks! Glad to see that others have done something identical. The color changing desiccant is interesting. Is it reusable? I was thinking something like this in a sealed container since its automatic: https://www.amazon.com/Improved-Eva-dry-333-Renewable-Dehumidifier/dp/B000H0XFCS/ref=sr_1_2?crid=1FNRFDWS6JMUO&dchild=1&keywords=color+changing+dessicant&qid=1592852438&s=home-garden&sprefix=color+changing+dess%2Cgarden%2C296&sr=1-2

I suggest getting proper reusable dehumidifier instead. The bead packets don't absorb much and are one time use. Something like this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000H0XFCS/ref=cm_sw_r_wa_apa_i_bU59Eb4ENQMS1

It's not quite air tight, but it's pretty good.

Unfortunately I'm not experienced enough with my printer still to know what bad filament is link, so I can't tell if I've ever ruined some before - but I've used filament that is over a year old.

Definitely humidity. I used to leave my guns practically dripping with oil in my safe and I'd find surface rust on them after a couple weeks. Get a dehumidifier like this, put it in your safe, plug it in over night when the beads turn green. I have guns I haven't touched in months and they don't have a spec of rust.

Never understood why people go through all this hassle. I keep my filament in a sealed 5 gallon bucket with rechargable dehumidifier/desiccant. Bonus, it changes color when it needs to be recharged. I had this issue as well, ceramic heat emitters can help dry up excess moisture, a more airtight moist hide can also reduce humidity leeching into the rest of the tank. I also run a dehumidifier since I live in Texas and that’s honestly the only thing that will significantly drop your humidity. I bought this small one that I sit on top of my guy’s cage and it helps a little bit. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000H0XFCS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_UDaBEbQ31K326

Hatchbox has a good reputation. Sunlu is good too.

There honestly isn't any smell to filament that I can tell. Resin printers maybe, or more odd ones like Nylon filament, but PLA has nothing unless you print it too hot and it burns.

Good way to store it to avoid humidity is to use a sealed plastic tub (one with an airtight sealer in the lid), and get a rechargeable dehumidifier to sit inside with any unused filament spools (I use one of these https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000H0XFCS ). Essentially if you find it being brittle and snapping, it's absorbed too much moisture. set it inside for a few days and should be okay again.

This is refreshing! I just want to take a moment to tell you that you're awesome, and I, and whatever dragon you get, deeply appreciate you taking the time and effort to make sure everything is set up correctly. Thank you.

As you already pointed out, if your home's humidity hangs out at 60 percent, then your enclosure will match that with lights out.

I'll be honest, I live near a desert and have never dealt with this myself. I would try a rice sock, which is the most common solution that I've seen reported. You may even have the materials to try this tonight or in the next day or two. A lot of people report success with this.

If that doesn't bring it down enough, you may need to get a small dehumidifier. They make them for closets and such. (This)[https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000H0XFCS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_EKMLFb80CJ179] one is only 15 bucks on amazon.

If you don't already have one, I would suggest a high low thermometer/hygrometer. It will give you the highest and lowest points since you last reset it. I've had good luck with (this)[https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076M5WCR7/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_-MMLFbH5F4TCP]. You can use a regular one intended for a household too, of course. But the probes are nice for positioning.

Glad to see a temp gun sitting on the tank btw. And I don't see a water bowl, which is usually the primary cause of high humidity.

Good luck!

Edit:

Oh to address something I missed, I think 55% is too high. At least some dragons will get an upper respiratory infection if exposed to that regularly. So I would definitely work on getting it down. Overall very nice looking setup.

Well, ventilation is key in these situations. Small enclosed spaces that people are staying in for who knows how long at a time. Overnights, eight hours at a time, at least. Breathing releases moisture into the air, for one. Ventilation would allow less-moist air (depending on climate/season, 'natch) inside to balance out that humidity. But also, ventilation will mean your interior temperature adjusting quicker to the outside temperature - van will get colder inside than it would have in the winter, etc. I expect it's a matter of balance.

No insulation is perfect; all it can do is delay the inevitable equalization of temperatures to the outside.

Just for shits and giggles, I poked around looking for 12v dehumidifiers, and came up with bupkis, but I did find this, which for a van, looks kinda promising. No idea on how well it works. https://www.amazon.com/Improved-Eva-dry-333-Renewable-Dehumidifier/dp/B000H0XFCS/ref=sr_1_5

There's also non-powered ones that use silica gel packets (bigger versions of the little packets you get in jars of vitamin capsules and the like).

I would still suggest a hybrid. you get 2 generally queen size beds on seperate sides of the camper (you can also get them with 3 beds). Only the beds fold in, so you can store your gear in the camper all year long. I have a hybrid and treat it like my second home (including claiming it on my taxes). i have a full kitchen, pots, pans, dishes, boardgames, DVDs etc. It also has a hardsided bathroom. If i camp somewhere with a concern for bears or if i am overnighting on the road i dont set up the bunk ends and just sleep on dinette/sofa.

i made reflectix covers for my tent ends. These keep the tent ends cooler in the summer, and warmer in the cooler days. It also covers the material and helps keep them dryer and keep things like leaves and bird crap off.

I have also 100% had to fold the tent ends in while wet. Once i got home , i opened them back up to help dry it out. But, it is possible to pack it up wet if you have to. But with the reflectix i dont get as wet as normal. The material is also not like normal canvas, it is a smooth material that sheds water.

I also use moisture absorbers that can be recharged. I used to use damprid hangups - but i had an issue iwth one leaking and damaging the bathroom door/floor. i have included a link, but i bought mine as a 2 pack at costco.

It's not your filament, although I'm not surprised you are having trouble with yellow PLA (it's notorious for being brittle).

You need to keep your filament in a low humidity box or somehow get the moisture out of your filament.

Some people even oven bake before printing (I'll leave it to OP to research the right temps/times).

I have a sealing tub with a dehumidifier and a humidity sensor that helps;

I was just talking about re-drying packets. If all your games are damp from humidity, having mold in one game would likely spread to the others. The mold spores albeit, not that many most likely, are already in the air.

If I were you, I would purchase some of those gasketed airtight bins and put one of those silica things that I have in with each tub. Or just move the games to someplace in the house that is significantly less humid.

Here’s the unit I bought for my filament bins. Eva Dry Wireless Mini Dehumidifier. Top Moisture Absorber for Small Spaces. Rechargeable & Portable. Perfect for Bedrooms, Closets, Cars, RV & Gun Safes. Removes Humidity & Helps Prevent Mold Growth https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000H0XFCS/

Sure:

The dehumidifier is this one: EVA-DRY

The circulation fan is this one: AC INFINITY AXIAL 8038. I happened to have a hole saw already that was nearly exactly the same size as the fan blades, so I made a little L bracket out of wood, cut the big hole in it, and bolted the fan to it. The L bracket is then just screwed into the back of the collar.

I've thought the same. Was thinking about trying to either 1) seal the cabinet up a bit more or 2) put a air tight container up there and the spools in it. I bought one of these (https://amzn.to/32ExonU aff link / http://amzn.com/B000H0XFCS non-aff link) to help keep things somewhat controlled moisture-wise.

In Minnesota it's typically colder months where the gas heat dries the house out significantly (we have to humidify the house to keep it comfortable) or we are running the AC which also dries out the indoor environment. Overall the humidity in the house is reasonably well controlled.

I've been trying to find data that speaks to whether PLA or PETG has significantly worse performance in 40-50% relative humidity environments vs. 10-15%. Lots of the examples on the internet that show wet filament horror stories come from companies selling dryers. The only anecdotes are people talking about brittle filament and they don't really speak to the relative humidity of their environment (do they live in Florida with no AC)?

I'm guessing it's a YMMV sort of situation. I've had PLA that has been sitting on a shelf for 18 months and there's no discernable difference in performance (and it's not brittle) from that to a brand new spool from the same vendor, fresh out of the box.

  • Flush cutters if you don't have some already.
  • A weather proof sealed box to keep filament in.
  • Desiccant or something like https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000H0XFCS to stick in the box
  • Start looking at food dehydrators to dry your filament when needed.
  • 99% rubbing alcohol.
  • 100% Acetone (if you have the smooth metal sheet).
  • Plain dish soap with no fragrances or special stuff for your hands (something like plain Dawn).
  • Get the parts to do the Nyloc bed mod and just build it with that mod in place: https://github.com/PrusaOwners/prusaowners/wiki/Bed_Leveling_without_Wave_Springs
  • Humidity and temp sensors that you can put around the printer and toss in your dry box.
