These are all you need my friend. I have severe hearing loss and very sensitive ears. These are affordable, amplify pretty dang well, and also block out noise just as good. The batteries last surprisingly long too.

Just get electronic ears for hunting. they amplify noises below 82 decibels and cut out any noise above that threshold. You can get a set of Howard Leights for $40-50 on Amazon. I've used them for years as a Range Safety Officer.

> I would be (maybe unrightfully) hesitant to wear hearing protection that doesn't specifically say anywhere that it works for shooting.
Most hearing protection doesn't specify that its "rated for shooting", so thats not really a valid reason to discount these.
You're looking for the NRR rating. These have an NRR rating of 25 dB. For reference, a popular headphone set of shooting earmuffs Howard Leight Impact Sports have an NRR of 22.

A pair of electric ear muffs like the Howard Leight ones are really nice to have. It will protect his hearing when shooting and allow him to hear more of what's around him.

It absolutely can be damaging, and it can happen anywhere, but is most noticeable on platforms that are not aligned (think 42 on 8av, Union sq, and chambers)
Parallel to the north end of chambers street, on A1 and A2 tracks (I believe both) there used to be a rail transition, before the heavy installation of cwr. When a fast moving echo hit that rail joint it would make you blink from the sound pressure....
This is why before I ever step on a platform I don gun muffs, just like transit. I wear Howard Leight Impact Sport by Honeywell.

I have a pair of Howard Leight that work great for me and I have never noticed them cutting out for anything other than gunshots. I will say that I am in Southern GA and we dont get as much wind as some other places.

I have two sets, the one's i'm wearing are 3M Peltor ComTacs III (which are completely unnecessary unless you're running communications equipment, WIP for me), but I also use some Howard Leights which have had similar (and much more affordable) results.

These are awesome for the price range, even better when you upgrade to noise fighters gel pads

Same. I worked in kitchens for about 8 years and I have damaged hearing. If you need ear pro you can hear voices with you should get these.
I use them for shooting, but they have an amplifier that will allow you to hear voices crystal clear and block out all noise above 82DB. You will be able to work and keep your ears safe.

I bought a pair of Howard Leight Impact Sports a few months ago and they changed shooting for me.
I usually shoot with friends at a private range and that leads to a lot of on/off with ear pro as you talk to each other. With this electronic ear protection, you can just leave it on the entire time and sound is crystal clear while gunshots aren’t. Depending on how far you turn up the sensitivity, you can hear birds chirping and the rocks under your feet more clearly than you could without ear pro on, which is kind of cool.
We also found that they’re great for kids because they can clearly hear you and follow instructions while wearing ear pro the entire time.
They have an NRR of 22, but that’s been fine for me for everything from .22 to .357.
I usually wear plugs and it was an adjustment to get them comfortable for a good cheek weld, but I found the sweet spot and they work well for long guns too.

HEARING LIVES MATTER!
Something I rarely see discussed in airsoft circles is ear protection. Yes, eye protection is absolute and must come first above all, but your hearing isn't something that comes back either. I personally say its important to have, especially when you go to CQB fields or large events that permit blank fire. Thunder Bs go off around 100-140 dB. Blank fire grenades can be about 110-160 dB. An AR15 is around 170 dB. Hearing damage (from immediate sounds) starts at around 100-120 dB depending on who you ask.
You don't have to spend an incredible amount of money to protect them either. Seen here are 3 varying examples (at vastly different price ranges) of ear pro that I use on a regular basis. And if you are running radio, everything I have here can be wired into a radio set up one way or another.

First off is the basic reusable ear plugs. These ones in particular are the Surefire EP4s. I love these and wish I'd discovered them sooner. They're low profile and as long as I keep the flap open, I can still hear normal conversation. They come with a 26in lanyard to prevent you from losing one or both. I've pulled out the filter on the left side to run my Code Red Tango Jr ear piece to, and it works great. And they were definitely put through the ringer at my last game day at Gamepod. It was blank fire grenade galore that evening. And at $15 (literally the cost of a bottle of BBs), they're incredibly afforable.
EDIT: You can also sneak these under full face masks 😁

Next is my Howard Leight Impact Sports electronic headset. This is my usual go to for events and real steel shooting. Powered by a pair of triple-As, they can amplify noise by 10-fold. A quiet whisper from across the room can be heard as clear as day. But the second loud things start popping off, they drum it down to tolerable levels. Once again, I can connect this to my radio via a 3.5mm audio cable. Usually around $50-$60, its not a bad place to start on electronic hearing protection.

Last is probably something you should probably never buy for airsoft but there'a a few of us out there that just gotta have dat mil-spec gear. Peltor Comtac IIIs are incredibly comfortable and better performing than my Howard Leights. Honestly can't go wrong with them if you want to spend the money, but its an unnecessary expense when you have cheaper options.

As a side note for anyone who's read this far, if you're going to pick up an electronic headset, make sure you spend the extra money and buy the gel replacements for your stock pads. I promise it makes all the difference.

Yep! They're electronic, with mic's on each ear. So, if you have the set turned on, they pick up the noise, check if it's under or over 84dB, and play it on the speakers if it's under. I got them as a set for shooting, $100 for two pair. It helps with new shooters, because you can talk to them easily while teaching them. It's also nice when you're having conversations at the range or need to listen to the Range Officer. In landscaping it's nice cause I can just pause my music, flip them on and talk to my coworkers. Here's the same one I got, just not as a pair: https://www.amazon.com/Howard-Leight-Honeywell-Amplification-Electronic/dp/B001T7QJ9O/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=howard+leight+impact+sport&qid=1595462708&sprefix=howard+l&sr=8-3

These are great. Pretty slim and effective, I haven't had any issues using them for shooting skeet. Granted, I don't do it often, but the couple times I did I didn't have any issues with them.
I always do double ear pro, I like my hearing the way it is. I'm ok with single when I'm the only one shooting, but I'd rather be prepared for whatever anyone else at the range is shooting.

You might consider getting a pair or couple sets of these. You wear foam earplugs under these and turn the volume up. You'll almost be able to hear normal sounds as well as if you weren't wearing ear pro. But having earmuffs and plugs is definitely the way to go.
Edit: Other colors are cheaper.

Price isn't a huge factor, but being conscious of it is helpful. I have these earmuffs that I am trying to pair with the radio, so sound quality isn't so much a concern, I'm more interested in just getting the sound.

Just to add what I use. I love these ones. Comfortable even with an ACH and last for years. I've changed the battery once in about 10 years. $45 might be steep for some but it's better than having tinnitus

Agreed, get your own pair of eye and ear protection. These are ones I recommend. Might be pricey for some, but it'll save you money in the long run and being able to have a conversation with someone at the range without yelling is invaluable.

I know you said you didn’t really want anything electronic, if cost is the issue these are great:

If it’s personal preference, then disregard.
I wore these while firing everything from 9mm handguns to .50cal M2. They’re comfortable, low profile, and can make conversation with others easy. Oh and as a bonus, if you plug your phone into them you can make phone calls or listen to music.
I’ve used prescription oakleys as eyepro. Their lenses meet a lot of government standards for protection, you just want to make sure they wrap around in addition to being strong enough to stop shrapnel, especially if you are shooting steel. I also have Wiley Xs that I like with interchangeable sunglasses lenses.

If you order complete uppers & lowers from PSA, they literally snap together. If the upper receiver didn't already have flip-up sights, you'd want those or a red dot/scope. After that all you'd need are magazines, ammo and I'd strongly recommend electronic ear pro.
Understand any lower receiver (i.e., the serialized part of the firearm or 'firearm') would be transferred to your local FFL who'd give it to you after clearing a background check.

If the noise is still bothering you, stay away from the rifle ranges if possible, until you feel more comfortable!
Shooting as a sport is all about relaxing and focusing, and it’s definitely supposed to be fun!!
You mentioned collecting guns but not necessarily shooting them—yes, you can do that, also! Some people only collect replicas, or only buy guns that they like and enjoy the history of, but don’t shoot much, if ever :)
