If you are connecting to the 3.5mm microphone ports on the back of the pc:

  1. Ensure you have the drivers installed from the motherboard manufacturer's page for audio

  2. Ensure you are plugging the headset plugs into the correct ports (there are usually 6 ports, with one being for mic and one where headsets go)

If you are plugging into the 3.5mm connections on the front of the computer case:

  1. Ensure you have plugged the HDAUDIO connector or the AC97 connector from the inside of your case to the appropriate audio port on the motherboard

If the device is USB:

  1. Ensure you have the proper USB device drivers installed from the device's websites

General Notes:

  1. In windows, you will need to go into sound settings to make sure your device is listed as the input/output device

  2. If you are using realtek audio drivers, you may need to open the realtek audio control panel to change which audio is detected. This can vary wildly between releases of realtek audio drivers. Make sure your realtek is the latest version supported by your motherboard.

  3. If your device is 3.5mm but supports mic and headphones over a single 3.5mm connection, you will need a break out cable like this one: https://www.amazon.com/Headphone-Splitter-KOOPAO-Microphone-Earphones/dp/B084V3TRTV/ to properly plug into the 2 pc audio connections.

You'll need an adapter that splits into two cables for the single 3.5mm connection coming from headsets:

This is what you'll need https://www.amazon.com/Headphone-Splitter-KOOPAO-Microphone-Earphones/dp/B084V3TRTV/

You can buy a headphone mic splitter like this one https://www.amazon.com/dp/B084V3TRTV/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_CsBZFbXTBFVA0

The onboard soundcard should sound just fine unless there's something wrong with the port that you're plugging into. Usually a dedicated soundboard is for sound engineers, audiophiles, and musicians who need special systems. You should make sure you are fully plugging in the headset. I'm assuming it's a 3.5mm jack. If it has both speakers and a microphone on it, you probably need to split it using a splitter so that you don't lose quality. Here's an example of said splitter ^Note: I am not endorsing this product, I just linked the first thing I found to use as an example.

If your device has separate sockets for mic and headphones, you need something like this.

Depends on the computer but a lot of them have separate 3.5 jacks. Green for audio and red for microphone. You might want to try one of these splitters

I’ve never used those headphones in particular but I have used adapters that split the 3.5mm TRRS mic in and audio out channels up for what I think your use case is.

I commented already but specifically, you’ll want something like this:

So your problem is that your headphones have an inline microphone and has a single 3.5mm connector, but your computer does not have a combo-jack to use the combo-jack, but dedicated ones for headphones/speaker and microphone? If so, something simple like this might work without any programs or anything

That's a bummer, does the cable that comes with the headset do the trick, or do I have to buy something like this?

I am setting up multiple PCs to output to a single pair of headphones. I initially bought these splitters not realizing that the output and input iconography actually meant something (I assumed it was basically just a Y-shaped piece of wire inside), and therefore I only get output from whichever PC the output-labeled male end is plugged into.

In order to rectify the issue, I see that Amazon has this triple splitter that while the seller states in an answer to a question that it will work for merging two sources, he warns that because this splitter IS basically a Y-shaped piece of wire, the sources might interfere and potentially blow one or the other out.

In order to combat static caused by a ground loop I made from the first splitter, I bought a couple of ground loop noise oscillators, however I'm not sure if these would also work to prevent potentially blowing out the PCs sound cards (if that is actually a risk in my case).

The merged output is fed into a pre-amp to boost the output (which atm is literally just a speaker that has a 3.5mm in, 3.5mm out and a volume knob, but will eventually be replaced with a proper rack-mounted piece).

Audio will work just fine.

But the mic won't work unless you get a simple audio splitter such as: https://www.amazon.com/Headphone-Splitter-KOOPAO-Microphone-Earphones/dp/B084V3TRTV/ref=sr_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=audio+splitter&qid=1597597582&sr=8-5

You need a splitter that is specifically to go from a single 4-pole male (like your headset) to two 3-pole males, like your computer requires. For example:

https://www.amazon.com/Headphone-Splitter-KOOPAO-Microphone-Earphones/dp/B084V3TRTV/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=3.5mm+splitter&qid=1597917508&sr=8-4

Watch out, as there are splitters that are meant to simply connect two headphones to one output, and that's not what you want.

Welcome to the wonderful world of PC gaming my friend.

There should be a pink jack and a green jack.

The pink is for the microphone and the green is for Audio.

If your headset only has one of TRRS connectors on it, you need a splitter.

https://www.amazon.com/Headphone-Splitter-KOOPAO-Microphone-Earphones/dp/B084V3TRTV/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=headset+splitter&qid=1605290829&sr=8-3

you need one of these. Hate to break it to you
