It’s probably not terrible as long as you’re going in and out clean and straight. They sell switches: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079JQ9XXV/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_.XEeEbA5R9XPD

I use one of these hdmi switches and it works out fine. Or if one of your monitors has two hdmi inputs or an hdmi and a displayport you can just toggle with the monitor buttons. Works for me with my Macbook and Xbox setup.

Unless you have a lower res monitor and want to upgrade to 4k, you could always just buy an HDMI switch. This one on Amazon has good reviews and you wouldn't have to buy a whole new monitor.

Edit: there's a new model of that switch for a few dollars cheaper and it still has good reviews so I'd probably get that

Using HDMI Splitter as Live Streaming Switch

I'm in dire need of an HDMI Live Switcher and the ATEM Mini's are sold out everywhere. Is it possible to use a simple HDMI TV Splitter/Switcher like this to switch between two cameras?

Gear I'm using:

OBS

I took off the back panel and replaced the hdmi cable that hooks into the back of the control deck and replaced it with a longer hdmi then plugged that into my hdmi switch plugged the hdmi from my pc into the switch and then to the monitor and put it on the top of my ALU there’s enough wiggle room on the back panel that I was able to screw it back on and have 2 hdmi cords sticking out the back I didn’t put my pc in the cab as I also use it as my desktop but also use my ALU as a second monitor. Here’s the switch I use.

Looking to add a second camera angle to my live streams.

Hey all, I’m planning some live streams soon and I’m doing some research to figure out a way to add a second video source to my stream setup. I’m currently using the Elgato camlink which is a single-input hdmi-usb adapter. My question is, would a regular hdmi splitter like this work by plugging both cameras in one end and then going into the camlink? There’s a switch on this specific splitter so I could use that to change my camera angles.

I’m just looking for a solution that isn’t a $300 multi-input hdmi box.

Sounds like you need an HDMI switch.

Note: That was just one of the first ones that popped up in a search. You'll need three HDMI cables for it to work. There are definitely other options out there if you want to look around. :)

Well with three monitors you are going to either have 3 buttons to click, or maybe just one of those larger hubs if your GPU can handle it. Here is a link to an HDMI switcher. Amazon I’m sure you can find ones for DisplayPort if that’s what you prefer. Good luck!

I'm going crazy. Ever since quarantine, if I want to play my games on my PC, I have to unplug my work computer from my desk and then replug in my gaming PC, unhook my monitors from one PC and plug them into the other.

When I'm done, I have to unplug everything and switch it back again so I can work the next day. It's really tedious.

Is there a way to have both of my monitors plugged into both PCs at the same time? Would an HDMI switch similar to something like this work?

Any advice on how to make this work would be nice. I guess I don't need both monitors to game, but I use both monitors on my gaming PC for things like coding and music composition. So it would be helpful to have both.

No problem at all. If you have a little tiny bit of budget, you could consider buying a splitter, like this:

HDMI switches (like this one from Amazon are your best friends in these situations! There are small 2-to-1 switches like this, but they can have more in/out slots as needed/your budget allows.

Thanks for your help! I really appreciate it.

My monitor has 1 DisplayPort, 1 HDMI and 1 VGA inputs. How would you recommend me to use to connect two HDMI devices at the same time?

Would a switch like this one be my best option or do you have something else in mind? Maybe a VGA to HDMI adapter? But do those even exist?

I left you a link below for a HDMI switch. Plug the single HDMI port side into a HDMI port on the 1080 and then plug the TV and the main monitor into the 2 port side. Press the button on the HDMI switch to switch between the 2 screens easily. When 1 port is selected on the HDMI switch, it disables the other HDMI cable so it doesn't think there is another monitor.

If you're using HDMI with both cards, If your monitor doesn't support 2 HDMI inputs then you can get yourself a cheap HDMI switch (here's an example) and just use that. Instead of swapping cables you just need to press a button

Get an HDMI switch. I use this one, in combination with a very short high-quality HDMI cable between the HDMI switch and the monitor. (Less than 1 ft. The shorter the better.)

If you're already using HDMI for everything, the cheapest path is to get an HDMI switch.

I would break this into the following use cases:

  1. Using PC, sitting at desk, output on 1-2 displays
  2. Playing Xbox, sitting at desk, output on desk display
  3. Playing Xbox, sitting on couch, output on big screen

The way I see it, because your PC has multiple outputs, and both displays have multiple inputs, you can do everything using only one HDMI switch.

Case 1 is easy. Your PC's graphics card has multiple outputs. Connect an output to each monitor. Windows will automatically detect which screens are on and set to your PC's input, so whether one or both displays are on, you can duplicate or extend your desktop on the fly.

For Cases 2 and 3, connect one HDMI switch to the Xbox and the two switch paths go to inputs on the two different monitors. This way, you can set where the Xbox is going using the switch button, and then use the displays' input selection to choose between PC and Xbox.

You could also use a powered HDMI splitter, which would take the Xbox signal and push it to both displays all the time, so you just use the display input menu to pick what each display shows. However, these splitters cost more than a switch and require an additional power adapter.

Since it's unlikely that your graphics card has multiple HDMI ports, you may need DisplayPort to HDMI adapters as well. This isn't an issue if one or both of your displays have DisplayPort input.

Here's a new recommendation: Buy two of them and get an HDMI switch to make a multi-camera TV show... one camera is focused on where the speaker stands and the other one is at an off angle that can follow them. The seniors at the church will just love it! (I have experience with broadcast tech and the older people are perpetually amazed when I do something stupidly simple like use a different green screen background.) If you want a fluid head you can probably only have one camera that moves. Spend $150 or so on a fluid head and maybe get a cheap one for the stationary camera (the Amazon Basics tripod doesn't suck as long as you're not using it too much). Or just get two equally priced ones for both. I have an $80-ish Manfrotto and using two should be fine.

You can hook the external monitor to an output of a KVM switch and then hook the inputs of the desktop and laptop. If using all HDMI cables this is a cheap one I found on Amazon

If you use DVI / DisplayPort / HDMI or any other digital port your pc knows if a display is on or off, since digital communications is two way street, so when you shut off the screen the PC "unmounts" it and stops processing the signal to it.

VGA or other analog connections won't do this.

You could use a HDMI Switch or what ever kind of connection you use and leave one connection empty. Something like that:

https://www.amazon.com/-/de/HDMI-Switch-4K-Splitter-Bi-Directional/dp/B079JQ9XXV/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=hdmi+switch&qid=1592096569&sprefix=hdmi+sewitc&sr=8-3

I don't think you can route video signals like that.

Easier would be to get an unpowered HDMI splitter and press the button when you wanna switch.

I'm curious to the error as well. HS is quite old so maybe your hardware is too new. I would go Catalina and get the splitter for now. Quite sure it's not possible to route those video signals in a way that won't detract from performance (software). But maybe someone into ACPI knows a way to redo things there.
