For anyone curious and may be wanting to do the same thing, I got these LED lights from Amazon for about $25. They are fully customizable to display any color you want in any pattern. They can even play to music. I can control them thru my phone app, the remote on the desk, or via Alexa. Definitely recommend.

Thanks! They're from Ikea. I actually saw this thread from a while back and decided to get one for myself.

Yep, I got some LED strips that had adhesive on them, so I didn't have to use separate tape for them. Here's the link if you're interested

You know that it's not Neon, right? Amazon sells LED Strips that are flexible and have 3M stick on backing on them

I just used duct tape to hold everything down. You could use other things, just duct tape is the least expensive.

Building a Smart Apartment: Lighting and Audio System Set-up Advice

Hi r/homeautomation,

I am moving to a new apartment in about a week. I have always wanted to build a simple and clean smart home system. But wow, there are a LOT of products out there, at different price points, with different configurations.

I am currently looking to integrate a sound system and smart lighting system with my Amazon Alexa.

  • On the audio front (Vizio), I should be set. The sound system carries Bluetooth capabilities.
  • I am looking at various smart LED strips to place around my apartment (kitchen, bedroom, living room).
  • So far, this is the front-runner from what I've looked at thus far on Amazon.
  • I am also interested in using smart light bulbs. I would love for all my LED strips and bulbs to be seamlessly controlled using my Alexa application.

As I am trying to integrate multiple LED strips and bulbs together, does anyone have any recommendations on products and best practices to make this a seamless process?

As I am a beginner, I would appreciate any and all advice!

Thank you.

LED strips in white or RGB with WiFi or Bluetooth. Contact sensor on the door and an automation in Alexa or Google Home.

I like the Wyze brand sensors (both contact and motion) for reliability and value.

I used the Govee LED lights. They have a built-in microphone. They are used often for clubs or behind TVs.

The stand is made up of furniture legs I found on Amazon and a wood shelf from home depot. Pretty cheap.

Govee 32.8ft RGB LED | Here | Behind the desk lights.

Generic USB Powered 8.2ft RGB LED | Here | Behind the monitor.

I probably should have gone with identical strips but for the use case of probably changing the backlights to only red, white, purple as my fav colors I didn't see the need to go all out expensive and needed something USB powered for fewer cables to manage.

Hey there. Philips Hue lightstrips are a good option if you don't want to do it yourself, but they are expensive:

This looks like a cheap alternative that does what you want:

So this model is the Whynter CHC-120S. Right now it's seasoning. It's been wiped with distilled water, and it had some distilled water + a sponge in a plastic container sitting in there for about 1.5 days. I just took them out today because I've gotten some consistent readings from the dumb-grometers as well as my WiFi hygrometer. I'm going to let it coast for another without touching it, and then see where it is.

Here's a list of everything I've bought for it so far (Amazon):

I've found the AikTryee hygrometers to be pretty accurate. I've bought several pairs of them for tupperdor experiments, as well as for a traditional humidor. They're all in sync. I used some double-sided clear tape to stick one to the window, and one to the back. There's different readings from front to back. The back is more humid, so I've been taking the average of the three hygrometers as my baseline.

The LEDs were kind of a bitch to install, but I managed to get it done. I got inspiration from this YouTube video which goes over removing the seal, slipping the strip between the crack, and making it work. I chose the Govee LEDs so they could pair better with the WiFi hygrometer, and I also have a smaller bluetooth hygrometer watching over my traditional humidor.

I think I want to buy another circular digital hygrometer to replace the physical one because it really sucks. It's nowhere near the ballpark compared to the rest of my hygrometers. If anyone has any suggestions on a good one, I'd appreciate a link!

If you have any tips, questions, or recommendations on cigars to stock this guy up with, let me know! Thanks! :D

I actually run a budget setup because we live on one income. Most of what I have was purchased over time, though I had an accident settlement come in that let me actually finish building out my battle station recently. Before it was was more of a cozy corner with a nice chair I used my laptop in. We do a lot of thrift shopping, bargain hunting, using reward points, and waiting for things to go on sale. Most of my setup is new, but my wife's is a lot pricier and much of it is second-hand because she has VERY expensive taste in audio and visual equipment, but is very good at finding them at thrift stores and yard sales (plus she knows how to fix what others think is broken).

I posted my setupfor the first time the other day, but I didn't really go into what made it up.

Everything in USD:

Total setup cost without any of the discounts if I were to buy everything to set this up today: 1,631.37

This is all mixed with various art pieces and personal trinkets + my fountain pens. We made a conscious decision to spend 300 on a chair that would properly support me as I live with chronic pain. The only two pieces I really want to upgrade one day are the keyboard to one that fits my aesthetic a little bit better with the option to program the RGBs and the wireless headphones as the sound quality on these is... adequate.

It's not the fanciest, but it plays games at a decent settings. Everything's comfortable. I enjoy looking at the space around me, and I can change the color to suite my mood. Bonus points, I can move the television around to watch it in bed when my illnesses get the best of me or we want to family pile on the bed for a movie night.
