Theoretically yes, but I find a purpose-built travel router is easier. I take one of these with me when I go places: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GBXMBQF

Advantages are that it only needs USB for power, can use someone else's WiFi as its Internet connection, and with the same SSID/PSK as our home WiFi set needs zero configuration on our devices.

I mostly carry it because it makes connecting a Chromecast easy/possible where it might not otherwise be.

Adding onto this, I configured and have carried around this little usb-powered travel router to permanently have its VPN turned on. My location always shows me as being in San Francisco, no matter where I go.

EDIT: I've done this for years without issue.

I'd upgrade to the slate for dual band wifi and faster vpn but the Mango is decent if on a budget.

I should clarify that I write software, so I don't generally do network engineering or computer repair or anything like that.

The small router router is a great idea, I actually have a GL.iNet AR750S travel router (great specific recommendation too - I love that thing), but I keep it in my suitcase for when I travel. Generally don't need it in my daily bag. No appetite for an iFixit kit, but I should stick a phillips screwdriver or two in there for sure.

Thats it, i've upgraded to the GL-750S-ext because it has a 5ghz network, but other than that the MT300 would do fine.

I think a good travel router like this one is the ideal solution, and although there will be a little to learn, it will be less hassle and troubleshooting than dealing with the netbook idea.

I just bought one of these.

I'm planning to use it for travel so I can run a VPN back to my house and access streaming services from my home IP address, on devices like Roku.

But you could probably use it at home, hook it up to a reputable VPN, and then every device connected to it would automatically have VPN access. Set a strong password for your wifi, and you should generally be good to go, at least for network-level threats.

I have a similar setup. I just connect the Mifi to the router by USB and the router powers the hotspot while the hotspot feeds internet to the router by tether. u/askbill may have a better setup though.

This is the router I'm using: GL-iNet-GL-AR750S

I know they have improved, but I've only had them for 5 or 6 months so I'm not sure how much. That is how I run mine. I just have a dedicated phone which I hotspot to this (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07GBXMBQF/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

to spread the signal.

I am part of a group, so I pay $25 per month which I think is an incredible value.

Hi. I am looking for an enterprise level openVPN client router. I can do most of my development using the openVPN client software for desktops, but there are times when I need to connect some embedded devices using openVPN.

I am currently using this cheap little router, with moderate success.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07GBXMBQF

It is just way too slow. It maxes out at 8mb/s when all the planets are aligned correctly. I would love to find a solution that is closer to 50 - 100mb/s.

I am not interested in a DIY solution / building my own PC based router. I would like to find an enterprise ready - plugin and and configure solution < $500.

Buy a "travel router" or build one, possibly using a Raspberry Pi. I would suggest one already running OpenWRT or some similar distribution so you have control of the software. Google "raspberry pi travel router". Having a dual band radio is good - one for the uplink, one for your devices.

Something like this: https://www.amazon.com/GL-AR750S-Ext-almacenamiento-preinstalado-Cloudflare-incluidos/dp/B07GBXMBQF/ref=sxts_sxwds-bia-wc-drs1_0 - this is one of the more expensive devices with a lot of features. Note that processor speed could matter depending on the uplink available speed - a slow processor and a fast uplink WiFi may throttle your performance.

There are many others.

Edit: You could even run PiHole software on some of them (or if you build it) to have centralized ad blocking for all your devices.

>I’m interested in setting up a VPN at my work office and having remote (home) devices connect to it to utilize the work offices internet and network

Triple check with your IT people if you are allowed to plug a non work device into the network

Pfsense can do this if the right ports are open

>what would I need to buy to get it up and running?

What kind of budget are you working with?

So are you wanting to get two devices? (a replacement firewall for your home and a router you bring with you to to work?)

If you have pfsense running at your home, you could get one of these and use openvpn to connect back to your pfsense at home (providing your work allows you to plug the device into the network)

BTW if anyone’s curious... I have one of these routers that’s really small. If the place I’m staying has wired Ethernet it’s straightforward. If only WiFi I use WiFi sharing on the MBP then reshare via the router for my mobiles. This gets around the usual per device charges/limits, and either way the aTV is wire connected to the MBP on the router.

I’ve found that many hotels allow hdmi connections to the tv without a hassle but a few times I’ve had to unplug the hotel “cable” and then turn the tv on and change inputs via the buttons on the tv. When I’ve had to use the physical buttons the aTV remote ability to control the volume comes in handy. I’ve never failed to figure out a way to get it to work though (yet).

Glad to find someone else who tried it. I'm very comfortable with setting up the router, so that shouldn't be an issue.

Realistically, we're usually 20-40ft, max. But once you account for interference, I might add a little to be sure.

I ended up with one of these for now. Costs a little more, but with the 2 antenna that fold in and coming with OpenWRT, I figured I'd have a little more to work with.

https://www.amazon.com/GL-iNet-GL-AR750S-Ext-pre-Installed-Cloudflare-Included/dp/B07GBXMBQF/ That may do what you want- looks like it can get its WAN connection from WiFi without any tweaks. And it's powered by MicroUSB, so if you have a travel power strip with some USB ports that'll power this without an extra wall wart brick transformer.

Take a look at the GL-iNet Slate (GL.iNet GL-AR750S-Ext (Slate) Gigabit Travel AC VPN Router, 300Mbps(2.4G)+433Mbps(5G) Wi-Fi, 128MB RAM, MicroSD Support, Repeater Bridge, OpenWrt/LEDE pre-Installed, Cloudflare DNS) at https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GBXMBQF/. I think it has most of your requirements, look through the comments and questions posted on the Amazon link. Because of the OpenWRT and LEDE origin it is pretty versatile.

r/raspberry_pi • comment
1 points • cerebolic-parabellum

To be fair, a dedicated OpenWRT router will likely have better specs and possibly more radios than a raspberry pi. If you were looking at a dedicated device, I think this one is pretty good:

GL.iNet GL-AR750S-Ext (Slate) Gigabit Travel AC VPN Router, 300Mbps(2.4G)+433Mbps(5G) Wi-Fi, 128MB RAM, MicroSD Support, Repeater Bridge, OpenWrt/LEDE pre-Installed, Cloudflare DNS https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GBXMBQF

As for your question, OpenWRT should work fine to do what you want. I think you may want to bridge the interfaces - read examples of how to do what you want. Use luci, like was recommended.

I also travel a lot for work and frequently use a fire stick, and haven't had any of the issues your'e describing, but my server is at home, not local to the fire stick. My guess is it might be something to do with the network settings at the hotel regarding discoverability of other local network devices. I also carry a travel router that might solve your issues.

I am at this moment typing to you over a connection that has my eero connected to the travel modem in the link below, which is then connected wirelessly to an xfinity hotspot. The issue with xfinity hotspots is the login, which prevents most repeaters from connecting. That login, however, is attached to a mac address, and once it’s registered, it’s usually good to go. The travel modem in the link has a single-click, built-in MAC address spoofer, somit can connect. I’ve had it for a month or so now and has worked like a charm with only a few easily fixed dropouts and of course limited by whatever the xfinity speed is. I’m attaching to an xfinity-owned hotspot, not someone else’s router, so my specs are usually 100+ down, 20+ up...Sure beats paying a bunch of $$$ for a connection I only intermittently use though!

Comm here but as a result I worked with everyone on base. For me it was just constantly busy work, also helped allot of people with their personal laptops. The little spare time I had was spent at the gym, running outside, working on maintaining the bike. Learned allot more of the Japanese language when I was there ect... Just really anything I could do for a side distraction from the heat and humidity. There is also a small pool, cross fit pad, and soccer field. Its a good time to mingle with other branches even though its classed as a naval air station there is allot of other branches there. There is a small section for DJ made stuff at both NEX locations and occasionally the locals will set up a bazaar at 11D.

O forgot in my original post the internet you get at your room is a line coming out of the wall if you want wifi you will need to have your own wifi router they sell them at the NEX for an arm leg... I suggest bringing your own. Since I travel around allot I have a small USB powered router: https://www.amazon.com/GL-iNet-GL-AR750S-Ext-pre-Installed-Cloudflare-Included/dp/B07GBXMBQF

I like that one because it can also encrypt all traffic through a VPN and its switchable on the side. With a Micro SD card on the other side it can also be used as a small NAS. Have a little 4 port USB charger, with one being a fan, the router, and my phone with a spare for anything else.

Maybe. If you flash OpenWRT on it. But it's such a low powered device it will struggle with OpenVPN - maybe you'll get 5 Mbps out of it.

https://openwrt.org/toh/tp-link/tl-wr841nd

If you want an affordable router that will work a lot better take a look at the GL-iNet AR750S (aka. Slate), it can be setup with OpenVPN (up to 17 Mbps) or WireGuard (up to 68 Mbps).
