Try to see if there's more color-accurate monitors at 60Hz for the same price. Or possibly stepping up to 1440p - if they're editing 1080p video, then having >1080p resolution might be nice to have UI components by the side while the video is at 100% zoom. I have no idea if you can get a 1440p monitor for that price though...

But the case has a clear window so maybe they'll appreciate the RGB RAM :)

It is I'm running four 16GB sticks in mine, got two sets of this memory, but check around Newegg might have it cheaper.

The basic idea looks good, but I would tweak a few things...

For a Ryzen 9, 3900x (which is PLENTY to accomplish all of your rendering quickly, gaming fast, and programming), you should at least be getting 3600MHz, CL16 RAM. 3200 seems a bit slow. It’s hard to find set kits in such big amounts, like the 64GB you need for rendering, so I would try to find 2 kits of 32GB 3600MHz CL16. I would recommend getting 2 of these from G.Skills, as they’re a very refutable brand, and meet all the requirements. It will also fulfill the quad channel memory you’re looking for if you end up getting both. The extra speed and bandwidth in this RAM will make a very noticeable difference when rendering and pretty much anything on a high end cpu, especially those of which from the AMD Ryzen lineup. :)

The RX 580 is a really low end GPU in this situation. For such a high end cpu, and motherboard combo, and such a large amount of RAM, I was expecting somewhere along the lines of at least a 2070 Super. The RX 580 is more of a budget option, and while it will get the job done, it will SEVERELY bottleneck against such other high preforming hardware. However, and I don’t wanna be the guy to do it, but I think you should wait for the Nvidia RTX 30 series. The 3070 alone is supposed to be more powerful than the top of the line 2080 Super, and heck- you’ll be rendering and whatever you need in no time. It’s hard to describe how much a better GPU than the 580 will impact how you’re able to use it. But trust me, it will make your life 100x easier if you be patient and you will see such a preformance difference.

That’s a great motherboard btw. I have it myself. You’ll enjoy all the features and speed, and of course, PCIe Gen 4, for that extra bump in rendering and loading times.

And the PSU is MORE than enough for future proofing. Don’t worry lmao. Only thing I could think of is maybe trying to find an EVGA instead? They’re a more trustworthy brand

EDIT: if you go with the 3950x, you better buy a better gpu eventually lol

You are using 2x 16gb to get 32gb right? There is a huge difference in speed and here’s one I would use: https://www.amazon.com/G-Skill-PC4-28800-3600MHz-Ripjaws-16-19-19-39/dp/B07Z45XB3G/ref=mp_s_a_1_12?dchild=1&keywords=ram+2x16+3600mhz&qid=1603198446&sprefix=ram+2x+16+36&sr=8-12

Question for you PC experts out there. I have a pair of these, 2x16GB Ripjaws V sticks in my current rig. The ones on sale look pretty similar, except for PC4-28800 vs PC4-25600, slightly slower timing (and black v red). Is it safe to mix these for a total of 64GB? Or would they run inefficiently/not at all?

On a mobo with support up to 128gb, 4600mhz(OC), should I get the viper or this?

I'm in the process of putting together a similar build. Also targeting 1440p gaming.

I originally was going to do get a 2080 Super, but decided the extra 5-10% increase over the 2070 Super wasn't worth the $200 difference.

I went for the 32GB Ripjaws RAM, DD4 3600 CL16. On the SSD side, I would look into the SX8200 or S11 Pro (which is the SX8200 but with a heatsink). Amazon has the 1TB on sale for $135.

I'm not sure I would drop down to 550W on the PSU. Also I've heard the LG 83AB is a better value than the 850-B.

idk about the other parts but about the RAM if you really care about the RGB keep it but you can get this RAM (32GB 3600Mhz CL16) for like $40 less than the 16GB kit you have up there https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07Z45XB3G/ref=ox_sc_act_title_9?smid=A3TOECTKC4OEBD&psc=1

Yuck. Thanks. Jumping ship. These were briefly on sale for $130 yesterday: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07Z45XB3G. Picked them up instead of rolling the dice. 3600/CL 16 and on my QVL, I would expect them to go back on sale again soon. Not sub-$100, but I think the peace of mind is worth it.

Yeah it was hard to say no to that price!

On RAM issues: any thoughts on these Gskill or Corsair options? The corsair are on sale today, but are a C18 instead (not sure of the OC potential and if that would be worth pursuing if it means saving ~$25

I have 16gb ram patriot viper 3 from an old PC build.

Today I went out and purchased a bunch of new parts for a new build including a g.skill 32gb.

Would it be bad to include my old ram into my new build? So 48gb of ram.

Don't do 4x8; opt for 2x16gb. It allows a better upgrade path and Ryzen overclocks ram better with dual channel than quad.

I'd recommend this set. I have it paired with my Ryzen 3900x and got 3600 by just clicking XMP-1. No fooling around with voltage settings or any of that nonsense. Just fast ram right out of the box.

If you still want RGB, go with these

As I've never actually tried OCing RAM I can't really give my opinion but G.Skills Trident Z Neo kit is bloody good for the price

If you don't care at all for RGB then I'd recommend their Ripjaws V

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07Z45XB3G?tag=pcpapi-20&linkCode=ogi&th=1&psc=1

I wouldn't actually recommend getting them from Amazon as you can find them on similar PC building oriented websites for better prices, just used it as am example :)

Upgrading mobo, cpu, and ram. Want to futureproof and have plenty of overhead. Thoughts?

Type|Item :----|:---- CPU | Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5 GHz Quad-Core Processor Motherboard | Asus MAXIMUS VII HERO ATX LGA1150 Motherboard Memory | 16 GB 2x8 1333 Mhz Storage | 256GB Intel SSD (boot+programs), 1 TB + 2 TB of slow HDDs Video Card | EVGA GeForce GTX 1070 8 GB SC GAMING ACX 3.0 Black Edition Video Card Case | Corsair 750D ATX Full Tower Case i kinda cracked the glass display on this recently

Hey there! My processor's been giving me hell lately. Usage maxes out in games like Apex. I'm cpu bound in most newish things -- I average around 40 FPS in Battlefield 1 iirc -- and wanna upgrade to something that'll play next-gen targeted games without a hitch. I generally want to build something where I don't really have to second guess what stuff I'm leaving running at any given time. At the moment, this is what I've been looking at:

Type|Item|Price :----|:----|:---- CPU | AMD Ryzen 7 3700X | $294.48 Motherboard | ASUS AM4 TUF Gaming X570-Plus (Wi-Fi) | $189.99 Memory | G.Skill 32GB DDR4 PC4-28800 3600MHz Ripjaws V | $164.99

The CPU: the 3700X feels like the right call. It'll be plenty for the current day and should continue to be up to the challenge as Series X / PS5 games roll in. I mean, a Zen 2 8 core/16 thread cpu is basically what's in those things, right?

Motherboard: There's plenty that'll do the job but gosh, this one seems nice, doesn't it? I like the dual M.2 slots, I want to eventually make use of that. I picked the Wi-Fi version, which I feel won't really come up all that often, but I also really wanted the Bluetooth 5.0 integration. I could see myself making use of that occasionally, and it's like a $25 price difference. I'm alright with that. It seems like it's on the somewhat pricy side of things when it comes to recommended motherboards, but it also just seems real nice. I'm willing to pay for nice, unless this seems particularly wasteful then let me know lmao

Memory: Okay, I might be a little ambitious on this one. Buuuuut, if I want overhead, this sure would give me overhead. I don't do video editing all that often, but I enjoy it a lot when I do and am always looking for an excuse to do more. I'm trying to get as much "don't worry about it" parts in this PC as possible.

Not looking to upgrade the rest immediately. I plan to eventually get M.2 SSDs whenever it seems like a good time to. I haven't been bothered by disk speeds all that much at the moment. I still use 1080p monitors, so I'm alright with my GTX 1070 for the time being, too. I don't wanna upgrade my GPU/monitors until I could do 4K/60 in just about anything handily; it's my impression that we're not quite there yet. My case is still functional; it's pretty huge, not sure I want another full tower case after this. Not sure what the standout choices for cases are nowadays.

Heres my 2 cents:

Input: gaming PC, ATX for $1500.

Output:

|Part type|Name|URL|Price| |:-|:-|:-|:-| |motherboard|ASRock X570 PRO4|https://www.amazon.com/-/dp/B07THYPNC1/|Buy on Amazon| |processor|AMD Ryzen 7 3700X|https://www.amazon.com/-/dp/B07SXMZLPK/|Buy on Amazon| |memory|G.Skill RipJaws V Series 32GB 3600MHz CL16 (2x16GB)|https://www.amazon.com/-/dp/B07Z45XB3G/|Buy on Amazon| |video_card|Asus GeForce RTX 2080 8GB Dual|https://www.amazon.com/-/dp/B07GK4X6C2/|Buy on Amazon| |drive|Samsung 970 Evo 500GB M.2-2280 SSD|https://www.amazon.com/-/dp/B07BN4NJ2J/|Buy on Amazon| |power_supply|Thermaltake Toughpower 750W 80+ Gold|https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153198|101.32| |total|-|-|1499.29|

Analysis:

Overall two of the choices struck me as being a little off, but may not be to the new builder:

GPU - recommending a 2080 seems very hard to justify considering the 2070 super exists and at a far more reasonable price.

Storage: seems a bit light at only 500gb. At the very least a 1Tb hdd would be better here, or if a cheaper Crucial P1 1tb ssd was used then I could see not include additional storage.

Need help to validate a build upgrade

Hey guys, I'm trying to upgrade my 4 years old computer to a more VR friendly setup.

I used https://envybits.com/ presented in a post of this sub.

I just wanted to check if there was any compatibility or other obvious issue I would have missed, as I'm not too used to this stuff.
