I know it’s not in stock right now but the fitness reality 1000 bench looks like it got upgraded to 12”. A friend of mine got this at the beginning of the year pre corona and it was like $115. Maybe it’ll get back to that price soon?

https://www.amazon.com/Fitness-Reality-Super-Adjustable-Weight/dp/B01CR4XFIK I ordered this bench and it's super sturdy from what I can see, definitely not as much as the 3100 but I got it for like ~120 shipped so might be good

Fitness Reality FID bench for $99. Amazon and Walmart regularly stock this for $99. Don’t pay anymore for it.

True, but the product linked to me is also 0% what I was asking for, so I wouldn't really consider it. Neat to have, sure, but that money could pay for more than two years at a gym. I'd for sure do more, different, exercises with it, but I am not joking that I would need to eat like absolute shit in order to afford it.

Still looking for a collapsible/stowable exercise bench. Do they all just suck shit?

I bought this bench precovid. Since then I got a rack and barbell and I've used it for benching under 300lb with no issue on incline and flat. Some people have complained that it's narrow but I feel comfortable on it at 6' tall. Folds upright when not in use and probably has a 2 foot x 8 inch footprint

The Fitness Reality 1000 Supermax Bench is probably the best bang for your buck adjustable bench. Says it’s rated for 800lbs and sells for under $150.

No problem, I'll just drop some quick recommendations in case you choose to go this route:

I bought these squat stands and this bench. Doesn't look like either is available at the moment but there should be similar quality stuff in a similar price range. Stands (as opposed to a rack) and a foldable bench were crucial since it's the only way to make the setup compact enough when not in use.

For a barbell, I'd say get the first good barbell you can find on the internet. Generally, /r/homegym is good for researching quality of equipment.

Plates are the real challenge. Hard to trackdown and surprisingly expensive. My only rec here is to keep on checking craigslist and Facebook marketplace in your area until something turns up.

Best of luck figuring out a workout plan whatever you decide to do!

I have this one, it’s a solid bench at a good price.

If you don’t need decline or a leg attachment, this one is cheaper and smaller. I also own this one, but I much prefer the other one I linked too.

fitness reality

body solid

are some other options. They are taller benches. 17.5 inches high is what I prefer to get good leg drive. If you're only benching 40lb dumbells, these benches should be fine for your needs and stow away for small spaces.

Is there a reason the AB-3100 is so highly regarded in this sub? I'm not exactly looking for the best of the best but I was thinking of getting one of these Fitness Reality adjustable benches and a cheap flat bench.

Or perhaps getting this no gap adjustable bench instead of two benches.

Just pulled the trigger on Fitness Reality 810xlt in stock at Amazon for $259. Would have been cheaper pre-Covid, but happy to put hands on one.

There is a combo with bench for $395, but can save $20 by adding bench separately here:

I started by looking for a power tower. Really saw exciting gains while lifting though, so switched my ambitions to a cage. I know it's not the finest, but very glad to have it en route!

No problem, here is how I did it:

I was starting pretty fresh from a long hiatus from my lifting in college. I started out buying three things. First were these adjustable dumbbells in the 105 lb pair. I bought this adjustable weight bench, and I picked up a used olympic set very similar to this one at Play-it-again for cheap ($200). It was a large initial investment in stuff which I was aware wasn't top of the line. That said I still use all of it for different things even if the dumbbells are tedious to adjust, the bar is rusty, and the bench is too narrow. After some time I upgraded my dumbbells to the 200 lbs set which I also still use.

Later once I outgrew the dumbbell and small set I added more plates, bumpers because I had no cage and only used them for deadlifts. This is when I started shopping for a cage to do more advanced lifts and do them with safety bars. I bought a cage with lat attachment very similar to this one and build a DIY platform for it from plywood and horse mats which I baked in the summer sun to remove the horrid rubber smell. I used this walk-through to complete the platform, it cost me about $70 only because I used red oak as the top board and finished it in gunstock stain and sealant. Since then I've bought a weight pad, lat attachments and some gloves as my deadlift is needing them. Overall there were only two BIG purchases which were the initial and the cage. Weights are weights, buying used saved me hundreds and not needing the best out there and dealing with adjustables has saved me money and they can be used on my lat attachment to boot.

If you are just starting I can share my programs too. I am glad I chose the paths I did and wouldn't change anything honestly. My strength is way up and I look better naked. I even enjoy the lifting now which you hear about but don't realize for a while at first. I am open to questions if you got em, I'd love to help anyone wanting to do this.

Looking for help making a buying decision on a cheap adjustable bench for about $100. Which of these 3 or other similarly priced benches do you recommend? I'm just doing dumbbell work right now (up to 200 lbs total weight). I might add an Olympic set, but I've never benched more than 275 lb in my life. All of these benches would likely work with that range

Weider XRS 20 Olympic Workout Bench with Removable Preacher Pad and Integrated Leg Developer.

  • Pros:
  • Preacher, leg curl, leg extension up to 150 lbs of standard or Olympic plates
  • Cons:
  • Leg developer/preacher gets in the way of being able to comfortable squat up weight before sitting down
  • Bench does not go to 90 degrees
  • Pseudo decline
  • 610 lb capacity
  • Takes up a large foot print in my bedroom
  • seat does not adjust

I am same weight and height as you, 5'10" 192lbs down from 274 in october.

Do not listen to your family (do listen to your doctor). We are still overweight by quite a bit. The good thing is we are no longer obese :) We are doing good, but we are not done yet.

Up your protein as much as you can and maintain your CICO defecit.

Lift heavy and stay consistent.

Even at my heaviest, I never struggled with self esteem, but now I feel great. I'm 40 and can run and play basketball with the high schoolers and keep up. I still have padding around my gut, but my arms and shoulders are hard with definition(no bulging muscles yet though)

Only thing I was missing during the last several months was a core workout, so I am working on adding sit-ups, pull-ups, crunches, planks, etc... to the lifting schedule I linked above.

You have done great, you know what has been working so keep it up. A healthy range for us is considered to be 149-183lbs, so it certainly isn't going to hurt you to get down into that range.

CICO, Protein, Lifting, Cardio

you got this :)
