If you have the ability I would suggest using ethernet instead of wireless. Aside from that I would ask what you have for a router and what sort of distance your TV is away from the router and what sort of obstacles are in-between the two (ie. walls, floors)?

As an alternative I would suggest a Fire TV Stick 4K instead of the native apps. It has excellent Wi-Fi reception and is currently on sale for $39.

Cheapest/fastest way is to get a New 2020 4k Firestick (my regular non 4k one from July 2019 will only do 4 cams maybe sometimes before crashing). Good news is that with Prime they're only about $25 bucks with the 1 per household promo code 4KFIRETV. And they are a lot faster in all respects. Then install Tinycam (not sure if the $3.99 Pro version helps or not). I'm currently running 8 cams (6 V2's and 2 Pan Cams) without issue. But honestly I'm starting to play with RTSP because I hope to improve the FPS, because compared to what can be had for $200\~ bucks in the form of a complete 8 cam NVR setup, and what I already have here, these are junk. But nice cheap expendable junk that all live outside.

I’ve read all the comments and replies. Amazon Fire Stick 4K is exactly what /u/SteveKep needs right now. If he wants something more later he can updgrade. He’s looking for a simple, entry level for Netflix and Prime.

Amazon Stick 4K Steve, that’s your answer.

The Fire TV Stick 4K is $25 with the code: 4KFIRETV on Amazon . It’s a good streaming device if you just need it for just Netflix and Sling.

Yes you are. You are forgetting the unfriendliness of setting up a pi and troubleshooting problems. Burning the OS is easy, but setting up everything else? Well I hope you are great at knowing command lines that have been passed down from 30 years ago. If something doesn't work right, well that's your problem for doing something that the devs/community didn't support.

Grab the firestick. Netflix will work. HDR/Dolbyvision will work (4k stick that is $29.99 right now), and you won't need to worry about troubleshooting magical problems that just pop up. If you want "other" apps, install apktime, and go to town.

Mmmm I know this is well outside of this subreddit, but have you considered Fire TV Stick 4k? - https://www.amazon.com/Fire-TV-Stick-4K-with-Alexa-Voice-Remote/dp/B079QHML21

If you have [legally purchased] 4k movies on your local network, you can stream those with Plex Server (which can run on something like Synology NAS). Otherwise, it supports all streaming services pretty much, and 4k playback is excellent.

Get a Fire TV Stick 4K and a Premiumize.me account. The Fire TV Sticks are currently on sale for $35 on Amazon. I have two of them connected via WiFi and they work beautifully. Premiumize will provide you with a good selection of 4K movie streams (more than, IMO, RealDebrid). Of course, you need to have a decently fast Internet connection to download those big 4k files. I have an Internet connection rated at 150Mbps and never have buffering issues. Enjoy your new TV! :)

If just for movies like Netflix/Prime.

A FIRESTICK will do just fine.

This is a good alternative for a box, MXQ

There is plenty about.

What else will you be using it for?

It is, there's different verbiage for something that's out of stock. This is explicitly stating they're delaying shipments. Check the verbiage on the site for the Roku stick, in stock and deliberately delayed:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07X2FZ853/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_t1_dj5FEbK4CQ5TS

Then compare it to the Fire stick:

Something like an Amazon Fire TV Stick or Roku Streaming Stick sounds exactly like what you're looking for. They're basically the smart part of a smart TV, minus the TV part. Just plug the stick into an HDMI port and power and you're good to go.

This is a Fire Stick, it plugs in to your TV and you can install apps on it that do PPV.

This video shows you how to cast to your TV. The short answer to your question above is "Yes", but the Fire Stick will be far less cumbersome (IMO).

It is the Fire TV Stick 4K: (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B079QHML21/)

I have it plugged in with the wall outlet but also tried a fast charger from my Samsung cell phone, both had the same result.

Give the Fire Stick 4K remote a try:

https://www.amazon.com/Fire-TV-Stick-4K-with-Alexa-Voice-Remote/dp/B079QHML21

Looks like it's $5.00 more than I paid for a couple a year ago, but they work really well with the Shield. The only thing that doesn't work for me is the spoken commands. It recognizes that the microphone button has been pushed, but doesn't get the commands. Other than that, all the buttons work, including the mute button. I really like this remote. But if you're into verbal assistants, may not work for you.

here's one that combines 10/100 ethernet with usb ports
https://www.amazon.com//dp/B078MNW25Q
these were last on sale $25 mid july and mid nov 2019;
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079QHML21
$35 (price today) is the low end of it's usual fluctuation
but if you enter code 4KFIRETV you get another $10 off.

You could also just get one of these

And these things are so fucking cheap it's a joke

Honestly like sure, if Nintendo put Netflix on the Switch I'm sure it would slightly improve some people's lives. But there should be practically no one out there, except in extremely outlying situations, for whom netflix on switch is their single and only possible way of watching netflix.

The barrier on getting a device that can stream netflix is so incredibly low that this shouldn't really be a big concern for anyone. It'd be nice, sure, but I don't know why it's such a hot topic.

If it's a "dumb" TV I'd suggest getting a FireStickTV and a OTG y-adapter cable. Put VLC on the 'stick, plug the flash drive (or hard drive if you get a 3-4a 5v wall wart) on the OTG cable and away you go.
There might be cheaper native support options but $25-$30 for the stick and under $10 for the OTG cable is pretty cheap IMO.

The normal HD firestick is on sale for $30 currently, the one I linked to is the 4k version.

Your cheapest option would be a Fire Tv Stick which cost $25, however it does not support 4K. I would recommend that you get the 4K Ver. which cost $35 because I have both and the non-4K tends to sometimes have trouble loading the original source. This is due to the fact that the non-4K Ver. has a slower processor.

> We won't be sitting at extreme angles but few would at least be sitting slightly off the edge of the screen sitting 12 feet away.

Viewing angles should not be an issue at that distance. At 8-10 feet we have no issues with off angle viewing (I would say ~20º off centre).

As for the audio, I would suggest an external streamer. With Black Friday sales right now you can pick up an Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K for about $30 (depending on your region). That will plug directly into your AVR, control the power and volume on the TV and AVR (with either the Sony or Fire TV remotes) and sidestep any weird ARC/eARC issues. An OTG cable would allow you to connect your external HDD as well. Very reasonable investment and very user friendly with a high WAF.

Well, there is no compromise in sound if you follow either solution above. Bluetooth is never the greatest solution because the protocol does not have the bandwidth to drive a quality speaker, especially one like the studio. In fact Amazon tells you this on their Studio listing:

We want you to know

Currently 3D music is only available with an Amazon Music HD subscription. For an immersive home theater experience, you can use Echo Studio with Fire TV Cube 1st Gen or 2nd Gen, Fire TV Stick 4K or Fire TV (3rd Gen). This does not work via Bluetooth pairing or with older generations of Fire TV Stick or Fire TV.

In that case, you might want to split the role. Instead of having your echo and fire tv in one device, you'll want to go with a Fire TV Stick and a Echo Dot. Then you can go to the Alexa app > Settings > TV & Video > Fire TV > Manage Devices > and link the two together. This will give you the flexibility to move the Echo device closer to you. You can also get the Fire TV Blaster if you need the IR Blaster functionality. I'll leave links to all 3 devices below.

Fire TV Stick 4K - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079QHML21

Echo Dot Gen 3 - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07FZ8S74R
