Upgrading to better bed springs is highly recommended for exactly this reason. The stock springs are not high enough tension and they have a tendency to wander. I used these and they work great: Yellow Springs.
2 points • wiljc3
The springs that come stock on the Ender 3 aren't very high quality and they don't hold even tension over long periods of time. The springs are the main part of the bed leveling mechanism though - they push the bed up and you turn the wheel to loosen or tighten the bolt, pulling the bed down or releasing the bed to move up.
As the cheap springs that came on the bed weaken over time, that mechanism becomes much less consistent. Quality machine springs (the ones that always get recommended are bright yellow, but I think that's just coincidence) hold much more consistent pressure and don't drift over time.

Easily the best <$10 upgrade you can do for the Ender 3. Read the Amazon reviews if you don't believe me. :)

If you search ender 3 upgrades on a search engine or on Amazon you will see them mixed in with a lot of combinations of upgrades. Here is the link from the wiki on the sidebar.

Already had a glass bed.
My new springs were 1mm taller, so I think I lost that much travel compared to stock springs. I needed about 1.5mm to adjust and not have nozzle contact.

Is your z limit switch too high or possibly stuck closed? The one on the left side of the printer? It looks like you might need to lower it. You can snap off the little tab to get it even lower it needed.
But do yourself a favor and buy better springs...like, right now.

While I was waiting for these to be delivered when I first got the printer, I actually used a couple of nuts on top of the stock springs to get some more height/tension. But yeah, get the springs!

My bad I meant springs and not screws. These are what I use for my printers. I usually have to level my bed about every 10 -15 prints using these. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GXC1G2B/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_vxM.EbCQ6QGMT

I would also highly recommend replacing your bed leveling springs. I went from leveling every couple prints to rarely ever. The stiffer spring holds the position better. For glass beds, I went with plain tempered glass because I read a lot of the fancy glass beds with adhesive layers can lose some of the layer and become difficult to work with afterwards. Many people said in reviews that they ended up flipping the bed over to use the smooth glass, so I figured why not just go straight to the glass and save some trouble.

Definitely a lot cheaper than the bltouch. He's talking about these types of springs: https://www.amazon.com/FYSETC-Motherboard-Accessories-Compression-Creality/dp/B07GXC1G2B/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=ender+3+yellow+springs&qid=1599557487&sprefix=Ender+3+yellow&sr=8-4
So much sturdier than the flimsy ones that come stock. Stronger springs means less chance for needing to level every print. Definitely a great upgrade.. Should come with the printer in my opinion.

these from Amazon. I think they were linked in one of the stickies.

A little advice. If they are still coming with the round silver bed springs, replace them with the flat yellow ones. I was having to relevel the bed constantly with the stock springs because they were so weak. With the upgraded springs, the bed stays level and gives me much better results.

The springs are the same as the regular Ender 3. Be careful as a lot of the listings, at least on Amazon, have springs that are too long and recommend cutting them.

I bought these. Time will tell whether they're worth it or not, but I found my bed wasn't staying level very long. Hopefully this reduces the need for repeated leveling. I'm seriously considering the bltouch upgrade. We'll see.

This is what I have on mine. They are not going to make it easier to level. They make it so it doesn't go out of level as easily or frequently and maybe makes the build plate more sturdy. Good luck.

Just unscrew the knob to remove it, and you can replace the springs with the better quality ones linked below. Most likely all the springs are compressed beyond usability for the bed, and replacing them will help you get the bed to the correct height.

Most of the Ender 3 parts can be replaced on the cheap, so if you're missing stuff just search Amazon for it.

I picked up a Borosilicate Glass bed from Amazon for about $20 when I bought the printer, and adhesion gets a real boost. I had been going back and forth with the magnetic build plate, and ended up scraping the magnetic plate a bit too much when I aborted a print that only made a very thin layer. I could probably have recovered, but I have to say, scraping the glass plate is much easier, and with a little bit of hairspray on it, I haven't had any adhesion problems.
I already had a Raspberry PI laying around, but I have to say, Octoprint is just awesome. It saves you from running back and forth with the SD card, but more so you can heat up the tip and extrude filament before a change. I've also gotten a big kick out of the timelapse videos, after adding a $20 camera. As others have mentioned, you can run Pi hole on it, or any number of other things, but I think I'm just going to dedicate this one to the printer. My printer is in the basement, so it's pretty handy to just take a peek at the webcam feed or the progress on Octoprint from my phone vs going downstairs to see how it's doing.
The springs on my bed are a bit flimsy, so I ordered some replacements that I've seen recommended.

These are just my two bits of course, but I don't see any reason to replace the mainboard or firmware.

hey, not OP and I'm as new as they come (my ender gets here Saturday) but these are all over amazon - gotta be what everyone's talking about.

Here are a few I got:
Springs: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GXC1G2B?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Metal extruder assemply: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07B96QMN2?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Stainless extruder: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07N6F8KHT?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Also if you haven't looked into it, check out a raspberry pi + octoprint. Probably the most substantial 'upgrade' you could add.

Easy to install; un-screw the bed leveling knobs til they're off. Then starting at one corner lift the bed just enough to slip out the factory spring and slip on the new yellow spring. Do the same for the rest of the corners. Replace and tighten each bed leveling knob until the new yellow springs are fully compressed. From there level your bed.

Everyone loves their yellow bed springs. I installed mine on day one, so I can't tell how much better they work than the stock springs, but everyone says they're a major quality of life upgrade because you won't have to level your bed nearly as often.
These are the ones I'm using, and they seem to work great.
Make sure you order at least one extra spool of 1.75mm PLA filament to use with your new Ender 3. I like the eSun and Hatchbox brands. The printer comes with some filament, but it's barely enough to finish one small piece, if that.
On the day before your printer arrives, you should watch this entire video to familiarize yourself with the assembly process. Then, while you're actually building it, pull up the video again and follow along. You'll be glad you did.
The video description for that video contains a number of worthy upgrades, many of them printable. It's a good place to start. I would hold off on doing any other upgrades until you're familiar with your machine.
I really like this enclosure. It helps with maintaining an even temperature during your print jobs, reduces the noise a little, keeps dust out and offers some protection in case of fire. Plus it makes the workspace look nice and tidy.
Another really cool upgrade is Octoprint. I got it about a month ago and it's hard to imagine life without it. Haha.
Hopefully, some others will chime in. Good luck! This sub is a great community for sharing your prints and seeking advice, so you definitely came to the right place. If you run into any problems, look at the stickied posts and search the sub - you'll probably find what you need.

Steppers are the x, y, z-axis motors. Try to print this https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2925230 if you haven't already to see if it helps.
Also, have you gotten new springs for your bed? The stock ones are bad and most of my leveling problems are gone now thanks to the new springs.
After you done with the spacers can you print calibration cube to see what the top layer looks like?
1 points • dynamicguy73
I did, and it works great! I've had very little adhesion issues with my prints and leveling is so much easier, especially when you replace the springs with the high tension ones.
The only issue I've had is the binder clips which most people recommend to hold the glass bed on take up a little space and limit the size of your prints (you can't go to the edge anymore). But other than that, I've loved having a glass bed on my Ender 3 Pro
This is the glass I bought:

The four upgrades I did that I think helped immeasurably get better adhesion, consistency, and prints were: a Micro swiss hotend, upgraded bed springs, silent board, and a glass bed.
This are US links, but just to give you and idea of what they are. Uh, I guess I'll also echo what they said in the Ender 3 subreddit. Learn your printer. Get good prints with PLA on your stock Ender 3 and then start from there.

As for settings, off the top of my head (not by my laptop) I usually print 240-250 nozzle, ~80 bed, 60 mm/s print speed, low retraction like 0.1mm, low part cooling for structural prints, max part cooling for models (use PLA instead?)
1 points • shallnotbe_infringed
Any bed leveling requires a fairly level bed to begin with. It then adjusts for deviations in the bed.
Have you upgraded the stock springs with something more stiff? The stock springs won't hold level long. It's best to upgrade to yellow / blue or silicone mounts when using an ABL.
On the bed visualizer plugin, there was an update and a section added called 'angle corrections', which roughly tells you how much to turn each knob to get it level. It's not precise, but it's a good guide, just note where 0,0 is. I don't believe the plug-in wiki shows this update so there isn't much documentation on it.

I've had mine for about month and here are some tips.
- manual leveling is cheaper than getting all fancy.
- it will most likely have a dip in the middle. fix it with a post it note.
- get upgraded springs.
- get the upgraded glass bed.
- get nozzles on amazon for cheap. i recommend the one that includes a .8 and a 1.0 nozzle. the .4's are a dime a dozen.
Don't worry about really upgrading it now. just learn how to do stuff and have fun. Remember Keep it simple.
Sooner than later upgrades will be the Ender 3 pro/ Pro 1.1.5 Silent Mainboard if it works for your setup
and the Upgraded Replacement Aluminum MK8 Extruder

you can print other upgrades such as-
ribbon cable chain
Well there's a plethora... check out thingverse

Just get out there and print. upgrades can happen later. As for PLA. i've heard "pla is pla" and "HATCHBOX IS LIFE". experiment. Some manufactures even give free samples.
