I have a Flybird bench I got it on amazon a few years ago. It's nothing fancy but fulfills all of my needs and the price is good. I don't have the 2020 model so i can't speak of the quality of it, but the 2017/18 version is of high quality. (from what I can tell)

Any recommendations for a bench that can be used for hip thrusts? I currently have this bench but it's too high for me to do hip thrusts. I currently don't have any weights I can put underneath my feet and books would be too slippery and not really safe. I'm 5'3". Based on other reviews, the bench is larger and higher than an average one. Does anyone have any bench recommendations? I don't need anything too high-end. Budget is probably $150 max. Just something that will get the job done. I'm also open to the Brett Contreras bench or booty sprout if anyone has any input on that. Space is also a little tight as I will be using a bit less than one garage car space, so I would prefer not to get a pylo box. Thanks!

Anyone know if this is an okay FID bench? Will be used mostly for dumbbell work, no barbell use. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DNYSJ8W/ref=cm_sw_r_apa_i_avx0EbAK55EDX

I just placed an order for this Incline/Flat Bench from Flybird on Amazon. It's a best seller and claims to be able to hold 620 lbs, but I feel sorta funny about it. I weigh 220 and do plan on benching into the 300's so I will be putting my bench to the test. Wondering if I should just settle for something more sturdy that does not have an incline option.

I ordered this one. Haven't taken it out of box yet. Needed something that folds and is light enough for my wife to move. I won't come close to the weight limit. If this doesn't work well I am going to buy a Rep FID bench.

2 Questions about this Flybird bench

1) Anyone have it? What do you think cause I like that it folds up and I don't plan to bench 400 lbs anytime soon

2) How hilariously bad is the photoshop job on this? Either that or he's a tiny little man

I am extremely limited in my space and can't fit a bench or rack, only have about 12" of space below my bed to store equipment. I am waiting on the Bowflex 552's and exploring options for a bench in Canada that fits my needs.

Portable Adjustable Bench recommendations?

5'8 in a small studio apartment. Not much space, but I'd like a bench for some basic work outs while the gyms are still sketchy in this area. I do mostly dumbbell workouts up to 40 lbs.

I was looking at the Flybird Bench on Amazon

Any input would be much appreciated!

Just realized that the bench we have laying around only has a 300 lb capacity. What are some good budget options?

Would this be passable?

Double edit: Looked up the model on the manufacturer website. Website says 300 lb person + 100 lb weights are the capacity. The bench itself says 300. Which one do I trust?

I've done a PR on it, so it holds together well for me so far.

Have seen a few reviews where the welds broke under load, so I always use spotter arms when I am using the bench, but so far it is holding up pretty well.

That said, it is my least liked piece of equipment, and I am looking to replace it when I am able to. Other than reviews complaining about the welds breaking, it is too high.

Am/was in the same boat. Bought the Fitness Reality 2000 Super Deluxe XL Supreme bench from Walmart for \~$180 and it came with slices in the seat material. I know it wasn't me because you don't have to cut the box open, it basically opens like a pizza box. But like an idiot, I cut down all of the packaging before really inspecting the bench so I couldn't return it.

Talked to Walmart who credited me $25. Used it a couple of times before the "stitching" that doesn't even look like it's stitching began ripping apart in several locations.

I have this Flybird coming today. After all of this, I probably should have just sucked it up and paid more for a bench from the beginning.

Some pictures: Slices that I noticed right after opening, Bottom towards the leg attachment, Stitching by the butt area after one use.

Hi /r/homegym, I'm hoping to get some help/input on what to get for a very minimal starter homegym. My current plan is to get 2 things: a pair of adjustable dumbbells, and an adjustable fold-able bench. I figure that getting these two things will drastically improve my workout as right now I'm just using dining chairs, a 10 lb kettlebell, and a single 25lb dumbbell for basic light lifting.

For the adjustable dumbbells, in reading through the dumbbell thread, seems like Powerblocks are the most popular, but they appear to be all sold out on Amazon and powerblock.com. Ideally, I'd start with a 5-50 lb pair.

  • are there other websites/stores to buy powerblocks from? i'm in Southern California if that affects retail stores / shipping
  • is it worth signing up for the powerblock email list or is there a better way to be notified when they're in stock?
  • what's the difference between their Sport and Elite models? I get that the Pro's are urethane coated but I can't tell the difference between the others
  • is expandability worth it? i don't think i've really ever used dumbbells more than 50 lbs, and when we move I'll invest in a more robust homegym (rack/bar/plates/etc.)
  • if it's impossible to get powerblocks in the near future, what are other comparable products? I'd like to get a pair that do quick adjustments, and so far i've found:

A set of Elite/Spot powerblocks 5-50 appear to cost $300-$350 so I suppose that's my price range. Any other adjustable dumbbells I should consider?

For an adjustable fold-able bench, i'm not sure what my selection criteria should be, so I started with these:

  • foldable for storage (not enough room for dedicated workout space right now so need to be able to put in closet)
  • flat, incline, upright, and decline positions
  • easy to adjust
  • handles weight capacity (200lb + 100lb dumbbells = >300lb capacity)
    • a plus if sturdy enough for future homegym rack use

-

I found these on Amazon, but have never heard of any of these brands:

brand/link | price | shipping | rating | # ratings | weight rating|notes :- | -: | :-: | :-:|:-:| :-:|:- MaxKare | $146.88 | free | 4.5 | 12 | 800 lbs|only -15° decline setting, RitFit|$169.45|free|4.3|271|510 lbs | Flybird|$189.79|amazon prime|4.4|1626|620 lbs

-

Are any of the above 3 good? Where other than Amazon should I look? Any specific product recommendations here?

-

Thanks for any help in advance!

I figured in addition to showing my setup, I’d give some background on the parts and setup. For those just looking to get into a home gym, I started building this about 6 weeks ago. This subreddit has been a huge help in getting my setup together. I had been going to big gyms for a couple years, but with C19 and living in a particularly nasty hotspot of Phoenix, AZ, I accepted the fact that it was time to build a home setup so I could get back into a routine. I had to put it on my back patio, because I simply had no room indoors. It’s not ideal in the AZ Summer, but I’ve gotten used to it.

I tried to compile links and a brief review of all the gear. I’m no professional, but I just wanted to pass along some info to those just getting started, as I wish I knew some of these things when I started.

Equipment:

ETHOS Half Rack from Dick’s Sporting Goods

https://www.dickssportinggoods.com/p/fitness-gear-pro-half-rack-16fgeufgprhlfrckxgmu/16fgeufgprhlfrckxgmu

I specifically held out for this rack because it came with built in plate storage, safety bars, j hooks, and the pull up bar can be moved for dips. It offered the most versatility at the price point for my tiny space. I got this from Dick’s Sporting Goods curbside pick up, but I did have to drive to a Dick’s two hours away from me (in Tucson) to snag one.

Flooring

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B081R43X3P/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_DalYcvfQywAod

When I first started training on my patio I had concrete floor, and it was pretty unpleasant. I ordered this flooring on Amazon, it fits the rack perfectly and the overage is a perfect place to deadlift. It’s no platform, but if you’re looking to contain your whole gym into this flooring space, it’s totally doable.

Dumbbells

I’ve had the hardest time finding dumbbells. A friend of mine dropped by a Big 5 and saw these and offered to pick them up for me. Just 20s and 30s. That said the price wasn’t too unreasonable, definitely over pre-pandemic pricing, but at least they get weights in reliably. Call your local Big 5 and ask when they restock, that’s your best bet to score some.

Plates

I have a wide range of brand on plates, obviously sets are just sold out constantly so I have ordered them pair by pair. I have Rogue, ETHOS, Hulk Fit, CAP etc. When I started, I didn’t realize that Rogue restocked almost daily. Returns and cancels get restocked on the site, so they’ll have limited inventory pop up in the morning. One thing I will call out, the Hulk Fit (orange 15s) plates are about the lowest quality I’ve seen. I got those first from Amazon, you can damage the plate surface with your finger nail. I have everything from 10-45s though, so I’m well stocked finally.

Kettlebells

Honestly I’ve never been a huge kettlebell guy, but I found myself ordering them when they pop up for sale just to have. Slowly but surely I’m getting great use out of them. Check Amazon, that’s been my source for them (scored the 35lb and 50lb ones there).

Bar

I purchase my bar from a friend used, $80. It’s pretty crappy, but it absolutely gets the job done. Though not everyone may have the same opportunity, keep an eye on Facebook Marketplace, etc. Good deals occasionally pop up. I told myself I will treat myself to a new bar when I finally crack 300lbs on deadlift or squat.

Deadlift Jack

https://www.roguefitness.com/a-jack-green

I didn’t think I needed this, but a friend of mine has one and suggested it. Cheaper than most options, and easy to store. For now, it does the trick.

Bench

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DNYSJ8W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_u3hoFbBRBA2EG

Full disclosure, I bought this from my friend as well but the link above is where he got it from. It’s a decent adjustable option, though a little narrow for my taste. I have broad shoulders and bench pressing sometimes feels a little awkward.

Lat pull down/pulley system

So this is home brew just out of protest from price gouging. Honestly wasn’t really worth the time sink but you can put together this kit via Amazon and Home Depot. I use a car tow strap to hang it, just a simple pulley and coated steel cable, and some carabiners to put it all together. Ended up purchasing a fancy Rogue rope pull down and loading pin just because. This setup still needs a lot of refinement (the pulley seizes up sometimes), but for now it gets the job done.

Fat Grips

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07QKML1SL/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_b6hoFbKFW7CHX

I’ve had these for a couple years now. I love them but I hate them. They really do give a good pump, but man does it suck to use. Get a pair.

Ngage Grips

https://ngagegrips.com

I just got these, they’re like fat grips but offset. Gives an EZ curl feel. I didn’t want to shell out for a curl bar right now, so this sort of fills the void.

Speaker

https://store.google.com/us/product/google_nest_mini

I only call this out because it was a happy accident. I got this for free, and decided to throw it outside with the gym so I had a speaker. I just stream Spotify from my phone straight to it, loud and great sound quality. If you’re using a Bluetooth speaker, upgrade to this. 10/10, makes every workout better.

I have these:

Also have a Total Gym that I use for some exercises and warm-ups. With all of that, I am doing pretty good. I like to focus more on upper body, but do dead lifts, squats, and lunges while holding dumbbells so that I don't look like I'm always skipping leg day.
