16in MBP Thermal Tests/Potential Multiport to Avoid

Today on my drive to work I listened to a recent episode of the MKBHD WVFRM podcast in which he discusses a few articles and forum posts going around claiming that the left port of the 16in MBP creates more heat than the right one. As a new MBP owner I wanted to test this to make sure that I'm not burning up my internals for no reason. The articles such as this one mostly come down to "I couldn't replicate it but who knows" so I was disappointed and decided to try it out for myself using iStatMenu's thermal monitoring tools. (I want it to be noted right off the bat this isn't the most scientific test, essentially me giving it a few minutes plugged in and not plugged in I didn't use the scientific method but I did do the same thing several times and got the same results, and feel free to try this on your own.

Results

As you can see there is definitely something causing a great deal of heat when I plug in this particular USB-C dongle regardless of anything being plugged into it or not. It's not a particularly expensive dongle but it's got good reviews so I'm unsure if this has something to do with it or my MBP. I'm a proud Apple sheep and I would love to hear from them if this is a real issue- this particular issue or my dongle related one.

I'm a very consumer side user, and I know very little about the hardware side of tech, mostly I understanding the software side of things. If any of you know more about hardware could you let me know if this is an acceptable thermal range or if this is perhaps just a normal part of how C style adapters work? Please let me know if I've missed anything or if you've experienced similar issues.

Uni 8-in-1 https://www.amazon.com/Ethernet-Adapter-uni-Detachable-Compatible/dp/B07Q6YS7W2

Cable is detachable, meaning a) if it fails, you replace the cable, not the entire hub, and b) you can use a longer cord so it’s not just hanging near the device.

I’ve got one mounted under my desk at work for a single cable solution for video, power, LAN, and Logitech unification dongle for mouse and keyboard.

I got the same problem. I got the uni USB C hub, screwed it to the underside of my desk and got a 1m USB-C to USB-C cable which could deliver at least 80W of power to my MacBook. Works perfectly. And on the surface of the desk I only have to plug in one neat cable.

The Ethernet on this uni adapter works for me. I bought this more for the hdmi display output and the duet is either limited or not playing nice with my monitor- the highest I can get with the resolution is 1440x900 which is slightly stretched out or 720p. I’m not an HD snob but it’s just not clear enough. But besides that it works

or you could then have a type-a hub with a type-c pd port ;)

they do make multifunction docking station/hub thingies. i have an apparatus as such i am extremely pleased with for my galaxy tab s3. i can use a type-c pd battery in to it, a type-c cable to my tablet's sole type-c... as well as having a usb powered rtl-sdr, a nrf24lu1p radio dev board, an ethernet connection, and a monitor connected. the keyboard is connected via the pogo pads on the tablet for that purpose, and the mouse is ble.

i don't use it every day, but it makes an excellent lightweight radio phreaking platform :)

or will this not fit your application?

the makers of this device, uni, are reasonably responsive, and have let their customers know that if the customer has an interesting idea or novel use for a new or existing product that uni wished to know.

I have this one https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07Q6YS7W2. It seems to work just fine. I’ve only had it for about 2-3 weeks. All the ports work, haven’t had issues yet. It’s difficult to tell with reviews sometimes. This one seemed to be the most affordable with least amount of negative reviews that I saw.

If you have USB c you can use this. Mount it below your desk and you can use any length cable to adjust.

The PD is the max supported, but will only deliver what is asked for. A lot of these hubs will actually only do 15w charging on Samsung devices, because they don't have the exact chip to properly communicate for 25 or 45w charging.

Hyperdrive and Anker make the most popular ones amongst tablet users, and both offer options with your needs.

I personally use this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07Q6YS7W2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fab_yxDEFbGPPT348

It has all the ports, plus the cable that connects it to the tablet or laptop is actually removable, so you're not bones of it gets worn and frayed. It offers 85W PD after it takes 15w of its maximum accepted 100 to power itself, so it's also good for Surface and other laptops if you need.

On the cabled hub side, I like this one as it has all the connections I need and the hub to iPad cable is detachable and can be replaced with a longer cable -

I currently use this USB-C hub from Uni that seems to do a good job. I haven't tested every port but HDMI, power passthrough and USB all work well and reliably.

This one is reasonably priced, and has a USB-C port for connecting to your computer rather than a permanently attached cable so you can attach a long enough cable to it to reach underneath your desk. I use a 0.8m Thunderbolt 3 cable with this one. I use the gigabit ethernet interface on it also and it’s been working fine.

I'm unsure as to what dock means in the context, but if you're just looking for a device to connect via USB C that provides some decent port access, I got this one on Amazon: https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://www.amazon.com/Ethernet-Adapter-uni-Detachable-Compatible/dp/B07Q6YS7W2&ved=2ahUKEwil-cS22q_qAhXCYjUKHUVODCEQFjAKegQIAhAC&usg=AOvVaw1mU9M_6F6uUa82KIeP4pEW

My only requirements were pass through charging, Hdmi, ethernet, and at least 2 USB A ports.

I plug the hub into my g14 via the provided USB C cable, have a mouse and keyboard connected in the USB ports, and hdmi to my external monitor. Everything that I've used works, but I can't speak to the other uses as I don't have a PD charger yet and haven't needed to use the SD card slots or ethernet capabilities yet.

According to the description it supports up to 4k output and up to 100w PD so I would think it would be decent. For the price it was a no brainer for me. They have a warranty as well (I believe it's 1 year)

Worth taking a gander at if it meets most of your needs.

First, assuming you're talking about a Surface Pro 7 and not a Surface Book 7 (the most recent is the Book 3). If this is true, the Surface Pro line doesn't have dGPUs AFAIK, only the Surface Book line has them; the Surface Pro only utilize Intel's iGPUs. Any issues with Nvidia drivers won't apply to these. If you instead are talking about the Book line with dGPUs, then ignore the preceding.

Second, I can't comment on the differences or specifications between using DP vs. HDMI outside of version limitations sadly, but that's above my scope of knowledge. Based off history, the mobile Surface products have always used DisplayPort by default so it's a safe bet to assume that it's continuing, along with DisplayPort Alt mode using USB C.

Third, this Uni USB C hub might be worth a look to see if it's available in Australia; it's available in the US for $39.99 USD. I got it recently for my Surface Book 2 with GTX 1050 to power a 1440p 60Hz second monitor and add Ethernet, and it works quite well for both, especially paired with a 100W USB C power supply to charge the Book 2 simultaneously. Unfortunately it seems it only supports 2160p at 30Hz, not 60Hz. At the very least, it could be a good last resort since it doesn't seem terribly expensive for what it's capable of. Depending on the use case, you may be just fine with 30Hz, such as presentations, movies, or photo viewing. Not sure what your use case is, so YMMV.

Fourth, here's a site I came across that explains the limits of the USB C port on the devices with them.

Hopefully this helps even a little bit, I was in the market for almost the same thing (except 1440p instead of 2160p) about a month ago and the Uni hub is what I finally settled on and it's been good to me since!

Just an FYI about passthrough power. You won't get 100W pass through. Hubs will take 10-15w to power themselves and send to usb ports. so with a 100W input you'll only see 90-85W out. they state 100w passthrough but it won't happen.

That being said. I use this one It's one of the only one's with a removeable cable. They make a slightly smaller one as well.

I didn't buy this yet but I'm aiming to buy this one. What attracts me the most is the fact that the USB-C cable is detachable. I find the other hard-wired USB-C hubs' cables too short. Plus, uni makes some decent products.

I just got Duo working on my Chromecast with Google TV, via a Uni 8-port Hub (at Amazon, here: https://www.amazon.com/Ethernet-Adapter-uni-Detachable-Compatible/dp/B07Q6YS7W2 ). It works with my rather aged USB webcam. The hub also has a GbE LAN port and an SD card slot, but I haven't tested those yet.

I am running a very similar setup to what you described with my G14 currently.

My main display is a Dell SD2716DG running via this Displayport to USB-C cable through the USB-C PD Port at 2k 144hz.

My secondary display is a Dell SE2717HR running via the HDMI port using a regular HDMI 1.4 cable at 1080p 75hz.

On the right USB-C Port, I have this hub: Uni USB-C Hub with an ethernet cable & two USB-As.

It's not technically a dock, but it definitely works.

Don't bother trying to find a mouse with a USB-C plug. Just buy a cheap USB-A adapter and you'll have a lot more mouse options to choose from.

You could also drop some more cash for a hub, which has every kind of port you will ever need.

This Anker 4 USB 3.0 Ports?

Not sure if you like this hub. I recommend it bc it seems that the hub can remove the cable between the hub and mac. (and change a longer cable somehow)

I use this hub with my Blade Stealth. The HDMI port can run my 1440p monitor at a maximum of 70 Hz, which is enough for the times I need to hook the laptop up to an external display. For everything on your wishlist, you'd need to spend a lot more money for something like this.

I was considering this exact same issue just yesterday, and I found two hubs that have detachable cables.

I ended up buying this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07X8V4JXS/

The cable is 12" long. I plan to plug the "right angle" end of it into the Surface Go 2, and the cable should easily be long enough for the hub itself to rest flat on my desk. The biggest downside to this hub, IMO, is that it does not have an ethernet port.

This one has ethernet but does not come with a "right angle" USB-C cable: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07Q6YS7W2/

Anyways, those are the two I found that seemed to best address the issue of cable length but also give me most or all of what I need from a hub.
