if you don't mind 4lbs, and in this price range, Eluktronics MAG-15 may match most of your requirements, as it has i7-9750H 6-Core CPU and as stated you prefer high performance CPU, a thunderbolt port, HDMI port, and a very good build quality since it is primarily comprised of metal.

Have a look at the Eluktronics MAG-15 it has the power you need for gaming and music production. This a good gaming laptop that has a clean and professional look. It has a fast SSD, full size keyboard and the keys have a nice feel to them. This laptop is a cut above other gaming laptops at this price range because of its cooling system. If you are a student this may not be the ideal laptop for you as its battery life is around 4 hrs so you might have to find an outlet a few times a day.

Hi, thanks for all the help these days helping us figure things out. I’m not really a gamer, but looking to try my hand at Fortnight or similar since my old laptop won’t run such things. I’m trying to balance performance and battery life...leaning more towards battery life. I like the 90+ W battery life here:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07X6MJ4X7
Am I missing something on this one? Seems like a decent deal, but I thought maybe it’s old since I can’t find it on their website.

One of the gaming laptops I was looking at was https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07X6MJ4X7/ref=ox_sc_act_image_1?smid=APTJB2SEQO65W&psc=1 From what I see it has great specs What do you think

This is definitely a good choice if you want a well known brand. The alternative would be the slightly weaker Eluktronics MAG-15, but of course, Eluktronics isn't as well known.

Thanks for your help with all of this. Here is the Mag 15 I was looking at. Honestly for game dev, anything with UHD graphics should just be thrown out of the list. UHD can handle most 2D stuff, but once you touch 3D that's where things get iffy.
All of the laptops you have listed are pretty thin, which I know you want, but thermodynamics make this difficult because a thin laptop + powerful hardware = thermal throttling.
I know it might be slightly out of your budget, but maybe take a look at the Eluktronics Mag-15. It's got the power you'll need and a slightly thicker chassis to allow for solid airflow. On top of that it's pretty damn light given how much power it has, which is uncommon for high performance laptops.
Here's a link: https://www.amazon.com/Eluktronics-MAG-15-GeForce-Mechanical-Keyboard/dp/B07X6MJ4X7/ref=sr_1_2?crid=2J9AQFTW4L0WC&keywords=eluktronics%2Bmag%2B15&qid=1582673076&sprefix=eluktronics%2Caps%2C228&sr=8-2&th=1
Also just know, you'll need to get do a BIOS update if you get this laptop to fix a mic and speaker issue that most people seem to get working fine. Just figured I would bring that up in case you decide to really get this thing.

The Eluktronics MAG-15 is probably the very best balance of portability, battery life, and performance for under $1500. Eluktronics' latest laptops boost their GPU's up to 115W so they usually perform better than any other laptop with the same specs.

What about (https://www.amazon.com/Eluktronics-MAG-15-GeForce-Mechanical-Keyboard/dp/B07X6MJ4X7/)
My range is $1000-$1500 would the Mag be worth the jump?
1 points • SirBlackington
The 1660ti MAG-15 is only $1500, at least on Amazon. I feel that a 1660ti boosted to 115w will be sufficient for 1080p gaming for a while. I'm not sure about this, but I would imagine that a 144hz screen would offer better battery life than a 240hz screen. And the jump from 9th gen to 10th gen is rather insignificant since its still 14nm. On the other hand, the GS66 is only $100 more and I think it looks really sleek. Also, the 2060 might help extend its usability. I've read that the screen can be kind of dim, and I'm not a huge fan of having the power and LAN on the sides.

Thanks for the reply on a holiday no less, well in America. It doesnt seem to be on your deal list and it redirects me to this Amazon link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07X6MJ4X7/
I'm just not sure if the amazon listing "512GB NVMe SSD" is the same as the "512 GB PCIe SSD" as listed on the techneeeq site?

Ubuntu is seen pretty favorably compared to MacOS among many developers but there may be a bit of a learning curve if you've never ran a linux operating system.
I also wouldn't be too concerned about the hardware becoming obsolete on any new device. GPU's may fall a bit behind for gaming on higher settings but it's doubtful they'd fail to play modern games in 4 years on lower settings.
The battery also shouldn't degrade 25-40% within a few years, even with heavy use. It may degrade a bit but you can slow degradation by rarely letting the battery drop below 10ish percent.
Anyway I think your options are great. The Mag-15 may be one of the better options for dual-use with coding as it has a decent mechanical keyboard and a thunderbolt 3 port. There's dozens more to also consider depending on your usage though.
If you have any questions feel free to ask!

I'm looking to upgrade my Poseidon Z, but am having a hard time finding a decent keyboard that fits my needs. I am pretty new to mechanical keyboards, so feel free to show me the way here.
I recently purchased a Mag-15 Laptop which has a brown-switch mechanical keyboard built into it. While typing on a laptop doesn't feel as nice as a regular keyboard, the keys themselves have a really nice feel and almost make my current keyboard feel like a chore to use in terms of noise and general finger fatigue.
Perhaps the laptop keyboard doesn't truly have a brown-switch feel, I'd have no way of knowing. But, would anyone be able to suggest a mechanical keyboard with the following features?
Required:
- Backlit (RGB is nice, but not required)
- Brown-Switch (or similar to MAG-15)
- Arrow keys
Things that would be nice:
- Numpad
- Wireless capability I will be using for programming and gaming. After some research, I've been eyeing up the Kechron K1, K2, or the K4. The Ducky Shine 7 also seems obvious and I'm willing to spend up to ~$150.
Initially the K1 seemed like the way to go, but I'm nervous about gaming with a low profile keyboard. On the other end of the spectrum, the K2 and K4 have a lot of complaints about wrist pains/discomfort.
Any suggestions or insight here? Feel free to recommend other products as well. Thanks!

So I got the Mag15 and it has gaps in the bottom paneling that won't snap back into place. The keyboard is also very loud (don't really mind typing on it though for the most part).
I'm considering sending this back and getting the Prestige instead. I asked below but would this configuration of the Prestige (https://www.bestbuy.com/site/msi-prestige-15-15-6-4k-ultra-hd-laptop-intel-core-i7-16gb-memory-nvidia-geforce-gtx-1650-512gb-ssd-gray-with-blue-diamond-cut/6382856.p?skuId=6382856) be comparable to this Mag 15 (https://www.amazon.com/Eluktronics-MAG-15-GeForce-Mechanical-Keyboard/dp/B07X6MJ4X7)?

If I were to buy a laptop now it would probably be the Eluktronics Mag 15 with a GTX 1660Ti for $1,500 or the RTX 2070 MaxQ for $1,700. It exceeds the above expectations for a gaming laptop.
One caveat to take into consideration is the GTX 1660Ti is limited to a max power of 75w rather than the default of 87w. That is done for lower temperatures, but that also decreases performance. That can be changed to to 87w with a free program called Asus GPU Tweak II. I am pretty sure the RTX 2070 MaxQ is also power limited by default as well.

I'd recommend this Eluktronics MAG-15 because of its amazing cooling system, great specs for this price (you can upgrade the GPU and RAM for $300, and the sleek look for gaming laptop. If you want a more powerful CPU and GPU but only 14" display, I recommend this ASUS ROG Zephyrus 14. This is a powerhouse for the price with the newest AMD Ryzen series, which outperforms the 10th Generation Intel Core processors, and its backlit keyboard only shines white. The Zephyrus also has an impressive cooling system. Both have really good build quality as well, but I don't know anything about their keyboards (sorry about that!).
I hope this helped, and feel free to ask me any questions you have!

Figured I would ask here...
Do you think the ($1200) mag 15 is a good laptop (mainly for build quality/battery/weight reasons)? (Graphics for medium gaming and engineering software)
Do you think there is a better laptop at/under this price point that would be better?

It it were me, I think I'd get a Lenovo Legion 5 with that budget https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/legion-laptops/legion-5-series/Lenovo-Legion-5-15ARH05/p/88GMY501444
Or try to save up a bit more to get a Mag-15 for $1200... MUCH better, but I understand it's $200 over budget https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07X6MJ4X7?pf_rd_r=MRH5ET2N6W3R0GDAR750&pf_rd_p=edaba0ee-c2fe-4124-9f5d-b31d6b1bfbee&th=1

I am not so sure about their support in the US. If you are worried about that. I'd get them off amazon, where pricing is pretty friendly anyway. https://www.amazon.com/Eluktronics-MAG-15-GeForce-Mechanical-Keyboard/dp/B07X6MJ4X7/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=mag%2B15&qid=1585734253&sr=8-1&th=1
Note there are several options. The 16GB 1660Ti one being the cheapest at 1499. The 2070 review you can find here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlkFUB_XLVs
