I have this and it works great. It's not super cheap..but the video on those VHS is important, right.. so how do you put a price on it.. e.g. I realize you may have a budget.. but a service to do it will cost a lot more. As long as you have the VHS player.. you can feed it into this and store it on your computer.

Elgato as one usb to composite equipament: https://www.amazon.com/Elgato-Video-Capture-Digitize-iPad/dp/B0029U2YSA You can also find some splitters on Amazon (that do composite, RGB, component, S-Video,etc to HDMI)

I've had good luck using this elgato device to copy VHS tapes to my computer: https://www.amazon.com/Elgato-Video-Capture-Digitize-iPad/dp/B0029U2YSA/
Someone else might have a better (or cheaper) suggestion, but this is the only thing I trust for my captures.

This seems to be the only decent one on Amazon, but it's like $140 USD.

You'll need a camcorder or a deck and a capturing device to digitize like this
Other than that you'll have to pay for the service.

You can do it with a USB AV capture device like this.
They usually come with software you can use to capture the footage. Plug the camera in, hit record on your computer, and play on the camera and that's it.
There are cheaper ones available; though the really cheap ones can be hit-and-miss.
Elgato is a reputable brand (owned by Corsair who make PC parts) when it comes to this sort of hardware; so if I was buying one I'd pay the premium for it.

I found this and it looks pretty promising. https://www.amazon.com/Elgato-Video-Capture-Digitize-iPad/dp/B0029U2YSA/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8
I didn’t realize this subreddit was for 8mm film. Thank you so much for your detailed response.

If you find a VHS, check out the Elgato VHS to digital converter

I found a ton of old home movies and used my old VHS to transfer the videos to my PC. It was really easy with this thing. I recommend getting a VHS with auto tracking though, it made it a lot easier and the quality much better.

It works well. I had to borrow another vhs player because mine had some extra features that caused audio issues.

Yeah I looked into that too. In the end your best bet is to look for a VCR on Haraj or buy one from eBay and deal with the shipping. Then get a USB video video capture device like this (there's much cheaper ones around). Last thing you need is just free time to babysit your laptop while the capture is ongoing and to change the tapes as needed.

I see, in that case I would try this one.

It's supposedly pretty good.
Or you can try the Startech USB3HDCAP which is a bit more pricy but very trusted.

This is what I use for my GL1 I used the S video cord and ran a male to male 3.5mm headphone jack into my computer for the sound. SVideo seemed to look a lot better than the RCAs

are these legato video capture cards a good idea?
1 points • camwow13
This Elgato capture card works great and gives compareable results to my older Hauppauge HVR-1250 PCIe S-Video capture card. The included software is junk but you can use it with any Directshow Capture like AmarecTV or VirtualDub. If you're on Windows 10 you'll probably have to use AmarecTV since VirtualDub is pretty broken with 10 at the moment.
Definitely reccomend visiting the DigitalFAQ forums for more reading on this topic. I just finished digitizing a bunch of tapes from the 90s and it went fairly well. Having a VHS player and a TBC (or one with a TBC built in) will make the most difference in quality. I captured off a JVC HR-S7500U using an HVR-1250 and AmarecTV, then de-interlaced with QTGMC in Avisynth and exported with ffmpeg.

Oh... sorry didn't see your second reply. You'll need a [video capture device like this]{https://www.amazon.com/Elgato-Video-Capture-Digitize-iPad/dp/B0029U2YSA/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=video+capture+usb&qid=1583022764&sr=8-3}, that takes analog signals. You'll also need some kind of software on your computer. I believe the Elgato device comes with basic software.

I’d just get this (or one of its many much cheaper knock offs): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0029U2YSA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_lqwLFbXWH5VBJ

If you're looking for a device to capture vhs to your computer, I can't recommend the Elgato enough. It's half the price of its competitors because it doesn't have all the bells and whistle anyone can get with their pre-installed movie making software. It's probably one of my favorite pieces of hardware I've bought just based on its minimalist purpose and easy of use.

I've been very happy with my Elgato Video Capture thing. Just a word to anybody who might buy it: for me at least (and others), it causes blue screens when connected to a USB3 port. Either use a USB2 port (if you have one), or buy a USB2 extension cable that will down-convert it to USB2 to solve the issue.

Thanks. So I was planning to connect it to my computer via this device to watch / convert the tapes to digital. The device states it can handle PAL / NTSC both, so I'm hoping that will not be an issue. And I don't believe my TV is PAL capable (Samsung 50" bought in 2011 in US) but if I did want to connect the VCR to it, I think I could use this converter. Curious for your thoughts.

You want something like an elgato video capture:

If it has s-video out then I’d use that as probably the best option. Elgato makes a reputable dongle for this, and Chinese ones are available for like $12.

Hi guys,
I have been doing some googling for finding a VHS to Digital converter for my parents. They'd like to finally preserve and edit down old family videos. On my initial search I saw a price range of like $12 to $100+ . I think my parents would be fine dropping up to $100 if it would really significantly improve the quality of the capture. There are some pretty old tapes in the collection, as far back as the mid 1980s and during playback on the T.V there were a few scratchy areas, I'm not sure if any converter would have any luck cleaning those up. The VHS player seems to be in decent shape outside of collecting dust over the past two decades.

I've read conflicting information on the El Gato video capture. Are you referring to this one? https://www.amazon.com/Elgato-Video-Capture-Digitize-iPad/dp/B0029U2YSA/
On the surface, it seems *perfect* for me, but I'd read conflicting evidence that it could be used for live-streaming. There are several other of these "composite to USB" recorders, but there seem to be debates about whether they'd actually work for streaming. Some folks have noted that either/both (a) OSB and other software won't process their feeds or (b) the resolution and screen dimensions can be off, resulting in a really small and hard-to see feed.
I'd love to be wrong of course, because these seem like by far the easiest solutions.

The one suggestion I would add is to please read the reviews carefully for these USB capture devices; all are not equal. Some work well and some don't.
This one has good reviews but it's a bit expensive:
Do some research on these before you buy one. Good luck!
