I haven’t gotten one yet but I googled the best entry level printers for making minis a few nights ago and this one is one that was recommended for printing D&D minis, and the it seems the over 2000 reviews with 4 1/2 stars agree.

I had a cheap WAHOO printer using ABS or PLA but after clogs, and the 3rd fire hazard warning from the manufacturer. I got posed and literally tossed it in the trash..
I have started D&D again and contemplating a resin printer. If I print in sections could I print the mask headband using this?
If you or your friends could recommend a good inexpensive resin printer I would appreciate it!

Nah I get it, but if it helps, the model I got is on sale for like $230, which is crazy cheap. If you are into minis or modeling at all, it prints 4x the resolution that Heroforge prints at, and minis are like...20 cents to print. It's nuts.
Basically what I'm saying is you can't afford NOT to get it

If you want to take a wild left turn, I recommend getting a resin printer as a second printer. It fills in the gaps that an FDM can't print. An elegoo mars is right in your budget

If he‘s ever expressed interest in 3D printing, the Elegoo 3D printer is around $200, not too big, great quality and is an awesome hobby for tech nerds. The resin material is $30 each also so it’s not too bad! He can download and print out figurines from sites like Thingiverse or even engineer and print out his own stuff to help around the house. It’s cool af and might encourage a fun hobby for him if he’s feeling lonely.
A little pricier though so...

That's awesome lol
I'm actually planning to get a 3d printer, as soon as I move into a bigger place. Right now I've got no place to put one.
Can you say if this one is any good?

I’m also a beginner. I bought the Elegoo Mars Pro for about $250 USD and it’s been super simple to use. Haven’t been disappointed with the quality of the prints. Looks like the previous generation is selling for $200 USD.

It is mostly in the startup cost. The Elegoo Mars is currently 215 dollars on Amazon. the resin I like to use is 50 dollars for a liter. I'd say that all the skaven shown was less than 5 dollars of the resin used.

Here's a couple: https://amazon.com/ELEGOO-Photocuring-Printer-Off-line-Printing/dp/B07K2ZHMRF/
https://amazon.com/ANYCUBIC-Assembled-Innovation-Off-line-Printing/dp/B07TVW9HGH/
They're normally about the same cost but the Mars just dropped in price because the new "Pro" version is about to come out. The Longer Orange 10 will still make excellent prints but its masking screen is 854×489 vs the 2560×1440 on either of those.

Hello all, after visiting my local table top game shop for the first time and witnessing the extraordinary array of minis and terrain pieces there are for different table top games, I would love to get into 3D printing so I could print my own. I have started only my research into the realm of 3D printing so I have 0 hands on experience with 3D printers but I understand the basic principles of both FDM and Resin style printers and I am not apposed to building from a kit.
As stated above, one of the things I would like to do with my printer is print minis and terrain for table top games. However I would also really like to be able to print other objects that could be useful in day to day life like desk organizers or custom parts for DIY projects down the road.
That being said I am blown away by the detail that can be achieved by resin printers but idk if the small build volume is a worthy trade off.
Sooner or later I would probably invest in both types of printers so atm I guess I am asking for advice on which to get first. My budget is around 300 or less and I am in the USA. I would be printing in a single room of an apartment near an open window (hopefully) so ventilation wouldn't be terrible but it wouldn't be more open like in a garage. I wanted the area of work to be clear because although I am no stranger to working around corrosive chemicals, I do not want to endanger my significant other or any guests that might be around while I am printing.
As a side note, my local table top game store sells minis from about $2.5 to like $20 a piece like to be able to print minis for cheaper than this in the long run if possible.
Thank you all in advance for your advice!
Some printers I have been looking
FDM: Ender 3
Resin: Elegoo Mars

In my opinion, this ain't it, chief.
I bought this machine's more basic brother for ~150 off of Monoprice's official ebay store a while back (No integrated touchscreen controls, Needed a host PC to print with, but otherwise the same printer) and it was more of a pain than it was really worth. I couldn't get the thing to successfully print, nor could my buddy who I ended up giving it to. for $50 more you can get the Anycubic Photon or the Elegoo Mars, which are a lot more reliable, have a larger community around them, and are generally regarded as good machines, whereas this one (Which is a rebadged Wanhao D7 Deluxe) is not.
You might be able to get this to work for you, but my suggestion would be to save up/spend a bit more on a more reliable printer. It'll save you a lot of headache in the long (and short) run.

The Elegoo Mars is a pretty popular entry level SLA printer that usually go for a little over $200. Of course, at that price there are quality control issues (you might need to return one) and you're making sacrifices in other features as well, but it's crazy cheap if you're just trying to get started without jumping into the $1000+ price range and want to print miniature figures or something.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07K2ZHMRF/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_apa_i_iRcsEbMC65X27
Formlabs (what OP used) is a very respected brand though, and their customer service, reliability of the machine, and features are why you're paying so much for one of their printers.

Can someone help a noob out and help me compare these two?
ANYCUBIC Photon S 3D Printer vs ELEGOO Mars?
I see the half inch height difference but is there some other X-Factor I'm overlooking to justify the roughly $150 cost difference?

Plan to mostly make DnD minis and simple toys for my kids
Offline print is pretty important to me since the best computer I have right now is a chromebook

Not planning on 3D printing terrain. Battle mats and props work just fine.
Guess I am confused on why an Ender 3 will be capable of larger minis and an Elegoo Mars wouldn't be.
Assuming this is the printer you have been talking about.

Potentially minutes, although most of the videos I've seen do time acceleration so it's hard to be certain of how fast they are. I don't have one due to the ventilation requirements. There's a video here. You can get a bunch of knock off printers like this on amazon now for a couple hundred bucks. Here's one.

If you want a more precise breakdown:
- Elegoo Mars printer: $214
- Elegoo Mars resin: $30
- Isopropyl Alcohol: $15
- Pickling Containers (2): $28
- UV light: $20
- Total (including previous post's estimate): $314.34
If you just want to print a small number of minis, getting a resin printer isn't that viable. But hitting that $314 price point in just minis isn't that difficult, depending on what game you play. If you play a GW game, that can be done incredibly quickly.

The cheapest resin printers to look into would be the Elegoo Mars and Anycubic Photon which are can be found for around $250 and printer prices go up from there, depends what your budget is at to what would be suitable.
Amazon links:
[Elegoo Mars] (https://www.amazon.com/ELEGOO-Photocuring-Printer-Off-line-Printing/dp/B07K2ZHMRF/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=Elegoo+Mars&qid=1579703402&sr=8-3) [Anycubic Photon] (https://www.amazon.com/ANYCUBIC-Assembled-Innovation-Off-line-Printing/dp/B07TVW9HGH/ref=sr_1_9?keywords=Elegoo+Mars&qid=1579703402&sr=8-9)
They do need to be operating in a unoccupied and well ventilated room though. Read more about resin printers and safety here. Do not buy a resin printer if you cannot adhere to the safety requirements.

With a few exceptions, the current batch of leading printers all have about the same print quality. Longer Orange 30, Elegoo Mars, Photon, etc.
The "next gen" of resin printers is coming this year, some are already out, I suggest you get one of these because they print a lot faster.
Sonic Mini 4K: https://phrozen3d.com/products/sonic-mini-4k-resin-3d-printer-phrozen
Elegoo Mars 2 Pro: https://www.amazon.com/ELEGOO-Photocuring-Monochrome-129x80x160mm-5-1x3-1x6-3inch/dp/B08F7L945C
The Sonic Mini 4K will meet your needs, and it also happens to have the best XY resolution (35um) for excellent prints.
But frankly the the original Mars will also work just fine. It simply prints slower (8s per layer versus 2s per layer on the newer machines). https://www.amazon.com/ELEGOO-Photocuring-Printer-Off-line-Printing/dp/B07K2ZHMRF

Sounds like a great gift idea!
The paint is easy to match. This link says that you need color code WA7030: http://paintref.com/cgi-bin/colorcodedisplay.cgi?type=paint&paint=19071&gmcode=WA7030&smodel=Firebird&syear=1978&smanuf=GM&sname=Martinique%20Blue
Take that code this link and order a custom color. This is an automotive base coat and will need a clear coat. This stuff sprays just like modeling acrylics, but wear a proper mask especially if you use the 2K clear. Splash is very quick, you'll have your paint in just a few days: https://www.splash-paints.com/custom-colors
For the 3d model of your Dad, there are cell phone apps that can scan a person and generate the .stl file you will need for printing. I have no experience with those apps, but as a 3d modeling and printing hobbyist I know that you can print a nice replica at 1/24 scale if you start with a good 3d model.
I have the Elegoo Mars Pro 3d printer and really like it. The Mars starts under $200 nowadays, the Mars Pro is a little higher:
Mars: https://www.amazon.com/ELEGOO-Photocuring-Printer-Off-line-Printing/dp/B07K2ZHMRF/ref=sr_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=elegio+mars&qid=1602675120&sr=8-5
Mars Pro: https://www.amazon.com/ELEGOO-Photocuring-Activated-Off-Line-Printing/dp/B07XHK1SW1/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=elegoo+mars+pro&qid=1602675095&sr=8-3
You might need to clean up the stl file after scanning and before printing. I use the free Autodesk Fusion360 for my 3d design work: https://www.autodesk.com/products/fusion-360/personal
Finally, the .stl file will need slicing to generate a file for the printer. Chitubox slicer supports the Elegoo Mars and is free: https://www.chitubox.com/

I printed these with a Photo Polymer Resin on a Digital Light Processing (DLP) printer. This one: (https://www.amazon.com/ELEGOO-Photocuring-Printer-Off-line-Printing/dp/B07K2ZHMRF/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=elegoo+mars&qid=1601917382&sr=8-3)
Used this resin (https://www.amazon.com/ELEGOO-Photocuring-Printer-Off-line-Printing/dp/B07K2ZHMRF/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=elegoo+mars&qid=1601917382&sr=8-3)
The build plate on this machine is about 1/3 the size you are asking about. The only print I know that is the size you are asking about is the Peoploy Phenom. (https://www.matterhackers.com/store/l/peopoly-phenom-large-format-msla-3d-printer/sk/MR2W93DX?rcode=GAT9HR&gclid=CjwKCAjwiOv7BRBREiwAXHbv3G56um5a9kfK22WpZxVWLJb_bQ3K0O6g-3V4ZLWmBu1f7zWB6TZRLRoCuFkQAvD_BwE) That's a pinch more money down but an amazing printer. You also need to figure out how to wash and cure your prints. I use Isopropyl Alchohol (IPA) which was easy and cheap to find before COVID-19 but is almost impossible to find now. I recently picked up the Elegoo Mercury Plus (https://www.amazon.com/ELEGOO-Mercury-Washing-Machine-Turntable/dp/B08626WF87/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=elegoo+mercury+plus&qid=1601917690&sr=8-2) I love this thing so far.
