Most hard drives can be pulled with a screwdriver. Get an adapter and Mount it on the gaming laptop. Back up your stuff from there.

You can get cables that connect any Sata SSD / HDD to USB , the drive should be acessable via the new computer that way.
https://www.amazon.com/Drive-Adapter-Cable-Support-Black/dp/B07S9CKV7X/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=Sata+to+usb&qid=1591895876&sr=8-4 one of these for example.

Yes to both. You’ll want something like this. They also come in USB-C variants.
Don’t waste your money on the Atomos Docking Station. It’s literally the exact same thing for $80.

If you gave a spare SSD, this is what I'm using.

>Did I get ripped off?
Yes, badly.
>They said the Samsung SSD crashed because I hadn't updated the OS in a couple years
>and I had downloaded newer apps that weren't compatible with it.
Neither of those are real "things".
> I bought a new SSD and brought it to them to install, which they charged me $30 to do.
Seems fair. Oh wait...
>However they also charged me $240 for "updating and configuring the OS"
Wow... that's BS.
>They then gave me a $28 cord to hook up to my old SSD so I could import the old data and user info myself,
I woulda charged you about $30 total, but I wouldn't have lied about the "I hadn't updated the OS in a couple years" and "downloaded newer apps that weren't compatible with it" things.
You sure they said "update the OS" and not "update the firmware" on the SSD?

Sata to usb cable. Works pretty much like an external bay for your hard drive.

As said before. The Xbox 360 slim hard drive is simply a SATA drive. Just get one of these connectors
And plug your HDD into your next Xbox. Make sure it's updated though!

A hard drive uses sata and you will want to connect it to usb. Sata to usb like this

I was looking at installing an SSD I pulled from an old laptop onto an even older home PC, but the desktop doesn't have a PSU and nowhere to plug in a power cord for the SSD. It seems my only option is to use a SATA to USB cable like this. Is this even worth using? My thought is that I'll lose the benefit of the speed of the SSD since it'd be connected via USB, but I'm not really sure.

Yes it is a destop HDD. This is the cable I have

I used a free program called "Macrium Reflect" when I cloned my drive a bit ago.
Here's a link to a USB3-SATA connector SATA/USB
Simply plug the USB side into your computer, and your SSD into the SATA side. It should recognize the drive as well, a drive. Just use the program to clone your current drive TO the SSD through USB.

Yeah you can. You’ll need one of these, a SATA to USB adapter.

You can buy a new laptop for 300, or a crazy gaming laptop starting at 600. Alternatively, you're going to spend $50 per hour minimum and parts.
Transferring data from the dead laptop is easy, just take a screwdriver, open the clamshell, and pull the hard drive out. SSD transfer kit costs between $5-10

Definitely not overkill. I migrated off one onto mini PC for more speed, but a Pi4 is plenty fast for a pretty active HA setup. Follow the advice here to use an external SSD. Seriously, do not skip this. It's dramatically faster, and the reliability of SSD over crappy SD cards to HA is huge. Something like this cable and this 120 GB drive will get you down the road for <$30, but there are tons of options (I use those exact items on a Pi4, so I know they work).

The old "USB to SATA" cable.
https://www.amazon.com/Drive-Adapter-Cable-Support-Black/dp/B07S9CKV7X
You would still need a power source. I believe the drive needs 12V, not 5V that is in USB. But, I could be wrong on that.

Hmm ok I’ll see if that helps by trying a different one. I have this one: USB 3.0 SATA III Hard Drive Adapter Cable, SATA to USB Adapter Cable for 2.5 inch SSD & HDD, Support UASP, 9 inch, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07S9CKV7X/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glc_fabc_rtr0FbN74MK6N?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

Problem: PC does not read mac hard drive (different file system.) If this is an old MacBook Pro 13" non-retina it is most likely a bad cable between the HD and the motherboard. If you want to revive it, a MAC repair shop can do it for under $100.
If you wish to abandon the mac:
- pull the hard drive out.
- get an [adapter] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07S9CKV7X/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_Lu57EbRNCN8S9)
- get the "Ultimate Boot CD" make it into a CD or a bootable USB stick.
- Boot from UBCD and run PartedMagic
- You will be able to see both hard dives (the MAC on USB and the PC's local hard drive).
- Copy the files you need.
Note: word of warning - be very careful on what you copy and to where - you can mess up your instance of windows.

Maybe you can take the drive out of it and connect it to another machine to recover/back-up any files. Assuming it's a SATA drive, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07S9CKV7X/.

Not compatible how? I use my original PS4 HDD as an external hard drive and it works fine. I bought this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07S9CKV7X/ref=cm_sw_r_apa_i_kWnKEbGWBTE81

Np. Otherwise, you could get something like this.

>model macOS Sierra Version 10.12.6
that's the operating system name not the model, the model will be on the bottom and will be something like AXXXX (example A1278) sometimes also called the timeframe when it came out like macbook pro a1278 late 2012

the hard drive inside the hp is removable, but it does take quite some disassembly, remove all the screws on the bottom, then lift out the keyboard, remove screws under the kbd, then take off the palmrest.touchpad part. then the drive will be accessible. may want to google; model number + teardown
once you do that, you can get a usb to SATA adapter or a dock to plug in the drive to the mac to get the files off.

I'd been looking at cheap ones like the BitFenix Comrade which has three slide out ones, but it's sold out in the US as far as I'm aware (Amazon UK still has it). Another one I looked at was the Corsair 100R which has four.
A better alternative might be a USB caddy though. Or maybe use a USB adapter. I assume these will allow booting from USB.
I've also seen adapters for 5.25" bays that allow the mounting of two 2.5" drives (they may be fixed, but it could free up space).

this is correct right? it looks a bit wide but it does say for 2.5 SSD
1 points • GunghoGeoduck
You can use something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Drive-Adapter-Cable-Support-Black/dp/B07S9CKV7X
That way you can plug your SSD in externally, do the migration, then swap drives.

1) Try /r/SuggestALaptop
2) Find a USB drive adapter. Either SATA or IDE (and SATA)
1 points • StackKong
Is it a SSD inside? You could try a 2.5 SATA to USB cable if there is no propriety connection inside. I haven't opened up Seagate External so don't know for sure.
Like https://www.amazon.com/Drive-Adapter-Cable-Support-Black/dp/B07S9CKV7X
Or can buy a new 2.5 HDD and shove it inside, look at https://www.windowscentral.com/seagate-xbox-hard-drive-casing
1 points • Jack_Benney
Well, if you get one of these, you can totally wipe the hard drive to sell.

Thank you for the links mate! The old internal hard drive is the seagate barracuda 1TB 3.5 by the way, and the new one is the 2TB version. I want to try the 2nd link with the 8 dollar cable. https://www.amazon.com/Drive-Adapter-Cable-Support-Black/dp/B07S9CKV7X/ref=sr_1_3?crid=QAZK25PZOMOC&dchild=1&keywords=sata+to+usb&qid=1592416771&sprefix=sata+to+%2Caps%2C173&sr=8-3 this one right here. but you said it wouldn't pass enough power or something? I'm don't understand really. I know a little about computers but not a lot though.

There are no limits like that. There is a technical limit on some older SATA chipsets in dealing with 3TB Hard Drives. But I doubt you are running into that. Put any SATA SSD in that you want, it'll work.
The 12GB thing is referring to your RAM, nothing to do with storage. RAM is what your computer thinks with, short term memory, while it's on. You don't view this or interact with it. The SSD is your long term storage.
IMPORTANT: It appears that your M.2 slot is an M Key but it's still possible that it doesn't support NVMe (In fact it's likely it doesn't). (Most M.2 drives these days are a newer faster type of SSD called NVMe, but there used to be SATA M.2 SSDs, SATA, but in an M.2 form factor.) So rather than take the chance, just forget about it and put in a Samsung 860 Evo and use the migration assistant (Which live migrates your computer while windows is running)
Use one of these, boot your computer, plug in the new drive, run migration assistant, then shut it down and swap the drives. Buy a 860 Evofor performance or a QVO to save a few bucks, not really that much difference.

I got the Samsung SSD 870 QVO 1TB from Amazon for 109.99. And I used their free data migration software to clone my old HDD. After I cloned it, replaced the old drive with it, and rebooted my system, it took about a minute or two for BIOS to recognize the SSD. Not gonna lie though, I panicked a little, because at first my laptop wouldn't even start. So I plugged in the AC adapter and about 30 secs later I got a black screen that said something to the effect of something or other not being recognized and to hit the ENTER key to reboot. I hit ENTER and it rebooted without issue. That first boot took a while, but each subsequent reboot is like 10 times faster now than it was with the original HDD! I also got an external case for my old drive so I can still use it for backups and extra storage as needed. I'm not a tech guy, so it also took me awhile to figure out how to make my laptop make my old drive activate through the USB so that I could format it. A simple click here and there in Microsoft's Disk Management utility and boom! Access to the old drive was granted and available to be formatted! I'm still pretty stoked about it. lol
Links below for everything I got from Amazon:

Surely you could spring for a SSD if you only have 250 GB of stuff? They're super reasonable nowadays in lower capacities. Things don't really start to get out of hand until you're looking at >1TB drives.
I've got a Seagate Backup Plus 5TB that I would have recommended up until a few days ago, started having issues and it's looking like its on its way out.
My suggestion would be to buy a standard 2.5"/3.5" drive and buy a SATA to USB adapter. 3.5 drives would need a wall-wart, but a 2.5" can be bus powered. That way you don't get stuck with whatever crap drives they put in the enclosure.
here's a list of 2.5 drives that don't suck also from retailers that don't suck
find something in your price range and then buy something like this if you never plan on needing to use a 3.5 drive with it or buy something like this that has wall-power if you think you might.

With something like this:
https://www.amazon.com/Drive-Adapter-Cable-Support-Black/dp/B07S9CKV7X
That will work for laptop drives.
If its a desktop drive, you'll need one that comes with a separate power supply like this one:

there are lots of options. the least vulnerable option would be to, like the others said, take out the harddrive and use it as a slave on another machine.
i use this one. very convenient and works beautifully.
https://www.amazon.com/Drive-Adapter-Cable-Support-Black/dp/B07S9CKV7X

another option is bypassing the windows login with a bootable usb that has windows media creation tool, and using an elevated CMD prompt window to manually reset the password. tutorial below. and all related videos to that pretty much walk through the same process. i think the former option will be the most simple, however.

good luck breh. condolences to your family.

You could get a cable for under 5 bucks on Amazon and as long as you have an extra power cord coming from your power supply you can have two drives in a desktop computer.
Here is a cable I use to connect hard drives via usb. It works for laptop drives and SSD drives but if you have a full size drive it may not work as it would not pass enough power and is is under 8 bucks
I use this device to plug in full size desktop drives but it will handle laptop drives and SSD for 23 bucks
