Use the TB port, not the HDMI 2.0 port on the Mac mini if you want to run at 4K/120hz

It’s this.

Thunderbolt 3 or USB-C to DisplayPort.
Something like this

I just got the CRG9 49" 1440p and HDMI can't handle the 120hz.. The type c w/DP 1.4 should handle that if I get this right?

[SOLVED]
Yes you can. I got this Thunderbolt 3 to DP 1.4 8K cable from Amazon, and it works like a charm.
Just make sure to check your laptop's USB-C ports are Thunderbolt 3 compatible.

So my new cable just got here (link for reference). I am successfully able to get 4k 144hz with a 30-bit framebuffer depth (10-bit color) output from my MacBook Pro (as reported by System Information under Graphics/Displays). When in the Display section in System Preferences, the trick is to hold the "option" key when clicking on the "Scaled" option under Resolution. Then you have to check the "Show low resolution modes" option. Finally, you get a Refresh Rate drop down, and you can select 144 Hertz. This is a bit of a convoluted way for macOS to allow you to utilize the full potential of your display, but it works nevertheless.
It probably would have worked on my previous adapter as well now that I think about it. I didn't try holding down the "option" key when I had that adapter. This setting makes my MacBook Pro fans constantly spin even while Activity Monitor does not show any significant use of system resources. Just running the OS at such a high resolution and refresh rate must be quite taxing, even on such a new machine. Maybe the newer M1 machines would probably hold up better. That being said, macOS feels absolutely fantastic at 4k 144hz, and the wide color gamut looks great with a fully color managed OS.

>If you have a Thunderbolt 3 to DP1.4 powered dock then you no longer need the USB-C to DP1.4 adapter.
Thanks a lot for your advice! Since I posted this I found the schematic for my laptop and the bad news is that only a DP 1.4 signal is routed through the Thunderbolt connector. That means the CX8 OLED TV I was looking at might not be the best fit. However, when I used a cheap USB C to HDMI adapter on a QHD monitor with HDMI it displayed a signal so perhaps I can do HDMI over Thunderbolt. Regardless the laptop says it is limited to HDMI 2.0b on the HDMI connector, but the mobile rtx2070 specs indicate it can do HDMI 2.1. I have no way to verify I can do HDMI2.1 through the Thunderbolt 3 connector without a lot of expensive purchases. The cables you linked might just do the trick. However, I found out the TV has a glossy screen and that is a deal killer for me.
I am now back figuring out which DP 1.4 monitor would work best for me. I am really stuck deciding whether a 144hz screen is really necessary for me. Do you happen to know if a passive cable like https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08B3XNZGS is capable of 3840x1600@144hz or would I need an active cable like your first link? It seems all the 43" monitors don't have HDMI 2.1 so that would somewhat limit my options.
Does a table exist somewhere that shows you what resolutions and frequencies you can get from DP1.4 over Thunderbolt? Does it match DP1.4 exactly? This stuff is amazingly hard to search which is why I am asking experts in the thunderbolt forum.

Check your DP cable; safest to go overkill with high-bandwidth DP1.4 such as:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08B3XNZGS/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_hUP5Fb6DCBR6E?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Cable quality matters because HDR = higher bandwidth

First I tried this never worked with any device on the G7 but worked flawlessly with all devices on my other LG super ultra wide. I got an adapter for it and now works well.

Now I’m using this DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort, also works really well at 240hz

I would use a usb-c to displayport 1.4 cable, since the laptop supports displayport 1.4.

I just received my panel today and installed everything. From what I can gather, there don't appear to be any issues with the hardware (no signs of dead pixels or leakage). However, I'm struggling a bit. Can you help clarify a few things for me?
My Setup
- MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, 2019), Catalina 10.15.7
- LG 27GN950-B
- DisplayPort to USB-C Cable 1 and Cable 2
Results
- Resolution: 'Default for Display' (looks like 1920x1080)
- HDR: Enabled
- Refresh Rate: 60hz
I have a few issues. The main one is that, regardless of which cable I try, I cannot get it beyond 60hz. I've changed the monitor's setting to be DisplayPort 1.4 instead of 1.4 (DSC), but no help. I've done the 'option'+ 'scaled' and selected 'low resolution, but the checkbox doesn't allow me to select any other refresh rate than '60hz'. Is the issue the cable, or the MacBook Pro? Note I tried the same thing with a MacBook Air 2018 and got the same results, but HDR wont work on that. I'm waiting for my M1 Mac Mini to arrive in a few weeks, so hopefully that will work...
One last question: If I force the resolution to be the native resolution, then the Mac UI looks really small. It's usable, but just tiny and hard to read. What settings do you use?

As u/Ellyidol notes, you need DisplayPort 1.4 or higher. I bought https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08B3XNZGS/ (USB-C to DisplayPort) for my Macbook Pro to Acer Nitro XZ342CK, which works well.

u/Insane_Vexxxum The cable that i'm using is:
While dragging there is no saturation difference. There is also no support of DSC for my Mac but should it able to stream 5120x1440@120Hz with 10Bit natively without DSC or not?
For what i reading the Macbook Pro 2018 15" (should) support DP 1.4.
I tested also lesser resolution at 120Hz and works fine.
About 8bpc, how is it possibile to set in Mac Os? I'm using SwitchResX and i don't understand how to set 8bpc or 10bpc. For sure i can't use the "standard" HDR flag of Mac cause that software bypass that and is not possibile to use it :(

Do you think is the cable or bandwidth limit of my Macbook? Is very strange this "half" bug of color.

Sure. I have been using both of these cable adapters:
- https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08B3XNZGS/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_cCoGFb71QJ8AJ
I bought #1 cable 3ft long just in case I had issues with cable #2 being too long at 6ft. I wanted to make sure I did not lose signal due to a long cable. So far no issues with a line in the middle of the screen using either cable. Both have worked just as good (assuming the resolution+120Hz issue is not due to the cables).
I just tried 2560x720@120Hz HiDPI and I have no problems. That is weird because there are lower resolutions than 2560x720 that do not work. I'm glad you brought that up. It gives us more information to help us troubleshoot.
