Do you know why this is? I see passive HDMI 1.4 to DP1.2. I'm thinking about ordering the LG GN950, but since it doesn't do HDMI2.1, I'm not sure I'll want it unless an adapter will be available.

Yes, a DP to HDMI converter is a different device than a HDMI to DP converter. Here's an example of a HDMI to DP converter. Note the auxiliary USB connector that powers the device. DP to HDMI converters don't have this because DP outputs have a more powerful power supply on the connector to run converters.

Saying it's specifically a Dell doesn't help much without the model number, they don't just make one model. If it has HDMI, then you're good, and you'll just need to plug in speakers in the headphone jack on the console.

If it has a DisplayPort, you'll need to buy an active HDMI to DisplayPort adapter. Active meaning that it has to be powered, here's an example:

You need one of these. Make sure to get the HDMI to DIsplayPort version, not the DP to HDMI. They are one way only.

You have to separate the idea of a cable and the signal that goes over it.

A DisplayPort port on a pc can output a DisplayPort signal or an HDMI signal

An HDMI port on a pc or xbox can only output an HDMI signal

A DisplayPort port on a monitor can only accept a DisplayPort signal

An HDMI port on a monitor/TV can only accept an HDMI signal

What you're trying to do is get an HDMI signal on the Xbox to a DisplayPort signal that your monitor can understand. You can do this, as seen here. But this is the cheapest I've found at $27.99US. If the cable you have does not have a USB port or external power source on it, it can only go from a DisplayPort pc to an HDMI monitor or TV and will not work the other way around.

I hope this helps, DisplayPort and HDMI are confusing, and most employees at electronic stores are just as confused--because it makes no sense--but if you have the wrong adapter that is certain to the the reason why you aren't getting signal.

You can Google the reasons why. I don’t have to use the extra USB cable it comes with (maybe if you wanted to power something on the monitor you’d need to).

I purchased a new monitor last week with 2 HDMI ports and one Display Port outputs. After obtaining the correct cable, my setup is XBOX ONE and PS4 use the HDMI ports and my laptop uses the Display Port.

Looks like you can get a HDMI to DisplayPort converter. Most DisplayPort/HDMI cables seem to be one-way, but the one I linked is the only one I could find that could take an HDMI input and convert it to DisplayPort output. It's much more expensive than the ones that go the other way, but it's not totally outrageous.

Unfortunately I don’t think you’ll be able to use that dock to connect your Switch to the monitor. Do you know kind of DisplayPort plug in your Apple monitor uses?

If it’s just a regular DisplayPort plug in then you would just need an HDMI to DisplayPort adapter to allow the Switch to connect to the monitor

However, you have to make sure it’s specifically HDMI out to DisplayPort in. This is an example. You may be able to find one that’s a little cheaper. This is just the first one I found haha

Everything since HDMI 1.3. Both of my monitors (Acer Predator XB253Q and Acer KG251Q) support it. Maybe you're not using it correctly, maybe it's an outdated cable, or (unlikely) maybe it's a HDMI 1.2 or lower port. Either way, 1080p120hz has been in the HDMI spec for a long time.

It’s just the way DisplayPort is designed... it has all the “wiring” needed to drive a HDMI display, but a HDMI port doesn’t have all the “wiring” needed to drive a DisplayPort.

You need a ACTIVE HDMI to DisplayPort adapter. I do not recommend this approach, it is highly volatile and the adapters are usually trash. Example of a adapter is below.

These work great and can still do high refresh rates (I can't confirm that they work with G-Sync or Freesync though)

does ps4 actually render 4k at 60 fps for you?

Yeah, DP -> HDMI work with just a cable, because DisplayPort has HDMI compatibility mode on most GPU's (so it kind of has adapter built in). But HDMI doesn't have a DisplayPort compatibility mode... So you'll need a active adapter.

The answer is a very solid, definite maybe.

There are HDMI to DisplayPort converters you can recognize them from the USB power which the other direction doesn't need like https://www.amazon.com/dp/B077JMLGMG or https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07G796JF8 and plugging that into an MST hub or a monitor with a built in MST hub in theory should work.

On the other hand, I probably wouldn't have a job if things that in theory should work actually did :D

HDMI/DP adapters aren't bidirectional - you have to get the one that works for your application. The cheap ones are when you have DP at the source and HDMI on the destination - that can be done with no adapter. I think the DP port is smart enough to figure it out and send the signals that you need to the HDMI destination.(example: DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter)

You're looking backwards from that. HDMI source, DP destination - that means you'll need an active adapter, just like if you were converting to VGA, but you don't wanna do that, since VGA is a lower quality signal - keeping it digital would be lossless...

Note how that has a USB plug - this powers the circuitry inside that actually changes the signal around.

HDMI and DVI are interchangeable with a cheap adapter - that just a plug difference, usually...(example: Bidirectional HDMI/DVI adapter)

Also, keep in mind that if you need audio, you're going to need to strip that out at some point.

I see, sorry for the wrong assumption. Your laptop specs state that its usb-c port does support display output aka Alternate modes (Windows says its automatic) . Can you check the Intel graphics or Nvidia control panel's settings regarding where to output the display, maybe there is a setting there.

Or alternately, according to this, you can use your laptop's HDMI output to monitor's DP port, but you need to use an active adapter like this

The best way is using a high-quality component or RGB cable going into an OSSC, then converting that to DisplayPort.

Alternatively, just run this adapter from a port on your MacBook and bypass the EGPU. This will use the dGPU for rendering that screen which may give you better performance on the main screen.

According to this thread on macrumors the Cinema Display would be limited to 720p if you use HDMI output. So not really taking advantage of that screen properly.
