These work great if you have enough space between the door and the frame. You are supposed to router out the frame so they sit flush, but a few of my doors had enough space to avoid it.

My favorite Amazon home security buy is a door reinforcement lock made by Defender Security. It is super cheap buy (under $15), installs quickly with a power drill (done in less than 5 minutes), and the quality is impressive for such a small/cheap product. I highly recommend the product. Installed it at the start of the year and so far it is holding up nicely. Just have to remember to unlock it before opening the door otherwise you are getting no whereDefender Security Lock

I ordered this one recently. Haven't received or installed it yet. I'm not a big amazon shopper but I figured it was likely worth the $15.

Not recommending this one specifically, but moreso this style/price point. I couldn't get the sill plate reinforcement kits because my front door has irregular spacing between the deadbolt and handle. Just trying to make it more difficult to get in, there's still other ways if they really want in (breaking the sliding glass door).

Welcome to Morgantown, where tenant rights don't matter! This is virtually every place in the city.

Help her install a lock like this

That's what I've used and it has saved me from violation of my privacy multiple times.

Drop down metal bars are excessive. You're looking at expanded steel and would be much better off. Lots of tree's, lots of solar motion lights. Thieves dont' like what they can't see, and don't like when they're illuminated.

For doors, I really like these guys: https://www.amazon.com/Defender-Security-10827-Door-Reinforcement/dp/B00D2K367Y/ref=pd_lpo_60_t_1/131-9719284-6774225?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B00D2K367Y&pd_rd_r=8dc9b76b-9c32-402f-9348-ca28981c8b21&pd_rd_w=r7Emv&pd_rd_wg=e5xde&pf_rd_p=7b36d496-f366-4631-94d3-61b87b52511b&pf_rd_r=6SYWBM7M576P9SGW5KVS&psc=1&refRID=6SYWBM7M576P9SGW5KVS

I'd love to have police monitoring but I really need to hear back from my apartment complex before I bother researching alarm systems I think. I thought about the Peephole camera alongside one of these but again, I need to verify whether or not my apartment allows drilling that into my door.

I hate to be a pain but honestly I just want peace of mind.

These are pretty nice too. But keep in mind, anything you add to your door becomes an extra step to exit in case of emergency.

Need help with accessory door lock (pics in comments)

I've seen This lock recommended several times on the sub and went ahead and ordered it without really examining it. The issue I have is my door is recessed and I can't seem to install this lock and have it sit flush on the door as intended. Here is an album of the lock on my door. As you can see in the second pic it sits almost an inch away from the door. The 3rd pick shows that the hinge is against the molding and so there's no room to set it deeper and even if i cut the molding out it would still be too far. Does anyone have any suggestions? My idea is put a piece of furring strip on the door for the pad on the lock to sit against. Are there any other similar locks that would work on this style door? Thanks.

We had a similar situation at our home and bought one of these: https://www.amazon.com/Defender-Security-10827-Door-Reinforcement/dp/B00D2K367Y/ref=sr_1_6?crid=3REUJXFZC408J&keywords=door+security+lock&qid=1582205727&sprefix=door+sec%2Caps%2C156&sr=8-6

for every exterior/entry door. If you install them correctly and with long screws, etc, they are crazy strong and able to help you feel more secure in your home. The only door we don't have it on we have a deadbolt so we can still enter the house when it's secured. Hopefully somethign like that can help you get piece of mind!

Very similar thing happened to my home a couple years ago.

I left around 3 to go pick my daughter up from school leaving my wife and son home. Normal routine for us. We only had one car at the time too.

Right after I left two men come knocking on the door. Usually my 80 lb American Bulldog would bark like crazy but they were all outside. My wife either happened to see people looking through the glass or was coming inside for something when she noticed people at the door. She answered and they seemed a little shocked according to her and asked some question (probably where McDonalds was).

A few hours later a neighbor from a few houses down comes knocking. Turns out her door got busted in not five minutes after they left our house. The house across the street happened to see the two guys at our door. They didn't think anything of it so didn't watch them drive down the road to their next target.

Needless to say I was pretty damn angry I wasn't there. I know my dog would've scared them off but I felt violated because someone was watching my street waiting for someone to leave.

I bought cameras that night and one of these: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00D2K367Y/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_0wOtEbAK32NSK

Also have a little something on the rear sliding door. Won't stop the glass from being broke but the door won't open at least.

You're taking the right steps. Nothing happened but now your eyes are open to the shitty people out there. Most of these criminals are looking for easy targets. Empty houses and such. Once they see a homeowner they flee.

Having my dog really makes me feel safe. Especially when traveling. She barks a scary bark and when someone knocks I like to put a little show on and act like I'm squeezing through the door trying hard to keep my dangerous animal from coming outside. One guys hand was visibly shaking when handing me his solar panel flyer.

Firefighter here, requiring a key to unlock a door from the inside has cost a lot of lives in not being able to unlock it fast enough. Seen a few die at the door because they obviously fumbled too long.

Instead put some sort of safety lock that doesn’t require a tool and is easy to manipulate even if you cant see it in the dark or through smoke.

Ok, so looked into your advice and watched some you tube videos about reinforcing the door frame and stuff. Few places reocmneded something like this

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01GWF2R70/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_ONaFEbV59J9RB

While some other places recommended these

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00D2K367Y/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_2RaFEb76MJ2QE

And some recommended a combination.

If I get one/both of these and add extra screws all around the frame as you suggested that should be fine, right? And we can skip the whole “zombie bar" thing?

Thoughts?

First of all, sounds like you're on the right path.

I have a few of these installed, and they are supposed to be rated for 800lbs of force. I'd definitely recommend the longer screws to hit studs.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00D2K367Y/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

You should also look into home automation, if you are tech savvy at all.. You can trigger lights to come on just by someone ringing your doorbell, etc. Check out https://ifttt.com/

Only thing I'd recommend is getting your wife an AR of her own. Just me personally, I'm not a fan of shotguns for home defense.
Here's a great article on why they are ideal for home defense, but it's ultimately up to you.

do your lawyer a favor, and also get a baseball glove.

ask your landlord if you can add an extra lock to the doors,

https://www.amazon.com/Defender-Security-10827-Door-Reinforcement/dp/B00D2K367Y/

these require the trim around the door to be cut for correct installation.

make sure the lighting is good on the exterior.

a doorbell camera wouldn't be a bad investment. the wireless ones from eufy just mount onto a bracket that takes two screws to install. you don't need to modify the current doorbell at all.

I'm also renting. Just setup some defensive measures on my own. Not a broke college student, but could give you some ideas.

Dowel rods from home depot / lowes / etc.

- Measure the gap on any sliding windows while closed, buy some dowel rods from a hardware store, and chop them to size so you can block off the gap when the window is not in use.

Barricading doors at night

- If you don't expect someone to need to walk through a door, there's no real reason why you couldn't just barricade it to begin with using a chair or something. Front door, back door, your room when you're sleeping, etc. You want to verify that the door actually gets stuck when opened on your object of choice.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00D2K367Y

- Offers some kick-in protection on doors. If you have around a 1/4" gap on your doors, this will drop right in (otherwise a chisel is going to be involved to mortise it in, I was lucky enough to have enough gap). You'll want to replace the screws with 3" tapcon or lag screws from a hardware store for better reinforcement.

https://www.amazon.com/CATSONIC-Premium-Window-Alarm-Device/dp/B07B2Q65DJ

- These will not stop people from breaking in windows, however they will alert you if someone is currently rapping on a window or if a window break occurs. I would advise not checking if an alarm is tripped and instead to make your way armed to a safe room (could be your own room). They've been pretty false alarm proof for me so far, but I'm not sure how cats would like it though.

- The official brand is Doberman, but they're kind of selling out in places. This seems like a decent alternative.

- There is a potential catch 22 here in that the person might trip it a few times and just keep doing it to mess with you. A full on security system like ADT, Simplifesafe, Ring, etc. might offer effectively a silent alarm in that it notifies you, but doesn't buzz the room it was tripped on.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07RWJSQ87

- As dumb as having nightlights is, if someone is moving through the house that you haven't been hearing, motion nightlights will indicate it. Cats might be tripping false alarms though.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M7SDVVQ

- I have a few of these placed outdoors more as a deterrent (they take C batteries), they'll paint any outside movement against my windows. Might not be a good idea if this guy's been harassing you constantly, he might just steal or break the units.

Next step I'm taking is to setup actual security cameras, but these might be out of your budget. I don't advise using a peephole camera since he's already scratched these out. Ring has a few "stick up cameras" that I'm planning on using, since they have solar options and IR night vision built in.

On the note of defensive items, pepper spray only serves to deter. Pepper spray sucks a lot to get sprayed with, but they still have full motor control, although it impairs vision and breathing. If you're going to arm yourself with a blunt object, just be aware that knocking someone out is not totally trivial and you are going to have to commit without hesitation if you seriously fear your life is in danger. Most things in the home are not "deadly force" by nature alone (although effective use could change that). A firearm is immediately deadly force. Not sure what state you are in, but if you plan on getting a firearm you should read on when you can legally use deadly force (i.e. do you have castle law).

Also yes, if this guy's cased your house *multiple times*, you should definitely notify the police that this is occurring.
