There's also another page that has all of the options for this same SSD. That one, https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-MX500-NAND-SATA-Internal/dp/B077SF8KMG , specifically has a (Z) at the end. When asked in one of the questions about it, the customer service rep said, " Thank you for contacting Crucial. The “Z” on our part numbers on Amazon signifies that your Crucial SSD will be shipped to you in Amazon Certified Frustration Free packaging. This packaging is easier to open and has less waste then typical retail packaging. You will still receive the same exact drive and all documentation, the packaging will just be different. Please let us know if you have further questions or concerns on this so we can assist you further."

So basically, with this sale, they're charging $10 for packaging on that other link.

"Penny wise, pound foolish" when the 1TB Crucial MX500 is $103.49 ~~on Amazon~~ virtually everywhere. The cost difference is less than $20 on a quality drive with 5 year warranty vs. this mystery meat.

Of course, I would change my tune if this were something like $60. Then I would buy multiple and have a fun RAID party.

Go for a PC.

You can do better than that part picker though. You have a micro ATX board with a full size case, and the RAM is a bit slow and expensive to maximize that Ryzen CPU.

Make sure to check out /r/BuildAPC for solid advice.

eta: you can also save a bunch on your storage. nvme is nice, but a good sata SSD is going to be practically just as fast for about half the cost. check out the MX500 SSD: https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-MX500-NAND-SATA-Internal/dp/B077SF8KMG This is what i have for my boot drive, and boot times are just as fast as my laptop using a Samsung Evo 970 m.2 nvme drive.

e2: just realized you're in australia which explains the prices

Get a different SSD, one with DRAM. Crucial MX500, or spend $20-30 more for nvme. The mx500 is actually cheaper than that price too while on sale today. All the good NVMEs had great deals for like $108 for a 1TB Adata SX8200 with 3500mb/s.

bx500 reviews poorly

Edit: I'd suggest a good NVME with dram for $120 because in a year games may take advantage of Nvidia RTX IO so a NVME could speed load times immensely.

Lol adding an SSD is probably the most simply thing you will do in the pc realm. That being said, moving your OS or windows over too it can be a pain in the ass for a novice who’s never done it. There are hundreds of videos on YouTube that show how to do is aswell as all of us on here that can walk you through it. I’m a visual learner so I get more out of watching someone do something then reading responses on here if they aren’t simple enough.

As far as an SSD goes, find one that has a memory cache on it like the mx500 I linked the 1T but there are other sizes too like 240 or 500gb. That being said you really only need enough space for your Windows OS and your favorite games.

Your pick should work. That Mobo, per the manual, supports PCI-e M2 devices, so that product you linked should be just fine. Install it, initialize it in windows (if needed), format it and go on about your business. For a game drive, the PCI-E drives are less of a thrill. Testing a few games I play, load times were not noticeably faster from a 3rd gen SATA SSD (think of a performance 2014 model), compared to a decent performing NVMe drive like the one you linked, to a ramdisk. Game load times were.... about the same, give or take 5 seconds. Games on a spinning HDD were demolished, but not as night/day as putting them on a regular SATA SSD.
There's one more thing to consider, you put in that NVme drive and you will lose 2 SATA ports:

page 1-25: The SATA5 and SATA6 ports will be unavailable when installing a module in the M.2 port.

If I was dead set on a game drive, I'd save the $35 and just get a good 1TB SSD like the Crucial MX500 series.

Of course, the benefits to the M2/NVMe drive is no cables to run.

As for the heat output, mine is a boot-drive and it lives underneath my graphics card. I have no heatsink on mine and after 4-6hours of gaming, the drive might go 10C above idle, but well within the tolerances of the drive. Mine is pretty much worst case scenario; the drive only really heats up during extensive use which would not be typical for a game drive. If your case has good enough airflow, the addition of the M2 should be just fine; nothing to worry about with just the bare drive.

My PC used to do this when it had a slow harddrive. I replaced it with a fast [Crucial MX500 SSD] (https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-MX500-NAND-SATA-Internal/dp/B077SF8KMG/) and it never does this anymore. I think it's an issue with slow harddrives and/or low amounts of RAM. I think TF2 can only allocate 2GB to 4GB of RAM, so after that fills up it starts loading data directly from the harddrive/SSD and I think it also starts using the pagefile (which is horrendously slow virtual memory.).

Any 2.5" SSD will be compatible. How much capacity (size) you get depends on how much storage space the programs you want to install will use and the amount and size of files you want to save. A 1TB SSD is the "sweet spot" in my opinion; plenty of capacity and not too expensive.

I recommend the following Crucial MX500 1TB 2.5" SSD for $109.

Post a link here of what you bought so we can be sure. It should look like this and have a SATA connection. https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-MX500-NAND-SATA-Internal/dp/B077SF8KMG/ref=sr_1_3?crid=28YB5UX07LMJP&keywords=ssd+mid+2012+macbook+pro&qid=1578287305&sprefix=ssd+mid+2%2Caps%2C303&sr=8-3

No need for any sort of adapter, but to fit the actual drive in the place where the old one was, you just take the 4 little studs that are screwed into the side of the old one and screw them into the empty holes in the new one and it fits perfectly.

I have the exact same computer (13 inch, Mid 2010 MacBook Pro with 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo).

I would recommend:

  1. Upgrade to 16 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 RAM (using two 8 GB RAM sticks; I used this exact one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KFNBP24/)
  2. If you still have a Hard Disk Drive in your computer, upgrade it to a 2.5 inch SATA III internal Solid State Drive (here's an example: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B077SF8KMG/)
  3. If you can, use Safari instead of Google Chrome
  4. If you can, use Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi (I use this exact cable: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HQ0AP9I/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1)
  5. Use compressed air to clean your fans

There are videos showing how to upgrade the memory (RAM) and storage (HDD -> SSD) in your MacBook and how to clean your fans.

If you try all five of these steps and it still doesn't run well, I would consider having an Apple repair shop replace the thermal paste in your MacBook as a last resort. They can also upgrade your RAM and your SSD if you really don't want to deal with it yourself (it's pretty easy, but you'll still have to be very careful with all the pins and of course disconnecting the battery before you do anything else).

I recently spent $350 repairing/repasting/cleaning my 2010 MacBook Pro 13. It's more than most people would spend on such an old device, but I'm happy to be using the same device instead of buying a new one.

That's only true to an extent, and comes a point where other aspects of the system (the processor, or even the program itself) become the limiting factor in how faster it can be.

Anyway given your setup you're limited to SATA SSDs, and they all top out around the same kind of read/write performance (about 400-500MB/s) because it's the limit of what the standard can handle. It's extremely likely that you won't notice in practice any 30-50MB/s difference.

As others have stated already, the "Evo Pro" line is very expensive because it's rated for very long endurance. But even your "normal" SSDs can usually have several hundreds if not thousands of TeraBytes (TB) written to them before they start failing. Unless you're constantly re-downloading the content of all your Steam library day after day for no reason, it's unlikely to become an issue in practice.

Bottom line is : cheaper SSDs would get you the same performance for no (visible by you) drawbacks. A "normal" 1TB SSD should be more than half as cheap, if you're talking in USD. Even the non-Pro EVO 860, which are already top-of-the-line SATA SSDs are in that price bracket.
And you can still save some money and get a cheaper drive for virtually no difference.

I paid around $100 for a 1TB Crucial MX500 SSD drive and I bought the Sabrent SATA to USB 3.0 cable a while ago. I’ve used the cable twice to clone HDD to SSD and have three MX500 SSDs, one 250gb and two 1TB in two separate machines with no problems at all.

I make no guarantees about them fixing the stutters. They are outstanding for boot/OS drives and perform well for me as such.

So it's hard for me to say the thermal paste was 100% the fix for my issues. It was a combination of that and a drive replacement.

I was playing primarily Modern Warfare and yes, I would see frame rate drops and textures were taking longer to pop in than they previously had. My Xbox would hit a point where it would just randomly shut down. I assumed this was a thermal throttling issue.

The errors I was getting said the problem was a hard drive issue but with my research I found other people who replaced the drive to only keep having the same problem. I kept researching and figured out the Xbox was essentially shutting down from thermal throttling which would happen at inopportune times and ended up corrupting the hard drive. Even after trying to format the drive with the Xbox system tools I still had issues.

While I had the Xbox open to replace the thermal compound I also replaced the internal hard drive with a sata3 SSD. I could have removed the drive and fixed it but figured I might as well do it right and increase the Xbox's speed with an SSD while I was at it, haha

Since I made those two upgrades my Xbox has been pretty much silent and I have had zero issues.

If you're curious about the drive I used and steps I followed to format I listed those below. Formatting and partitioning the drive may look daunting but it's very easy.

Why are you pairing a second-gen Ryzen chip (2700X) with a X570 board? It's not that it won't work, it's just a waste of money. A 2700X won't be able to take advantage of PCIe 4.0 support that comes with the X570 chipset. Either get a Ryzen 3000-series chip and keep the board if you need PCIe 4.0 support, or keep the 2700X and get a B450/X470 board.

Are you absolutely sure you want to run two cards in SLI? Many games can't take advantage of it. If yes, then you need a X470 (or X570; see above) board instead of B450, since B450 doesn't support SLI.

A Crucial MX500 will perform just as well as a Samsung 860 Evo. It's currently on sale on Amazon for $100.

Do you absolutely need a Samsung 970 Evo as a boot drive? There are cheaper NVMe drives that perform just as well. (SSD Buying Guide with flow chart)

If you're not going to do SLI, 850W for a power supply is overkill. Drop down to a quality 650-750W unit.

If you know for sure your laptop will take a 2.5" drive, then this will work. Your laptop should have an "NVMe M.2" boot drive as well.

QVO work well for media and games, but they are bad for write intensive work. You've probably picked the right one.

Sorry, it was a Crucial that I bought:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B077SF8KMG/

That Western Digital drive you linked is a mechanical drive, so the speed will be similar to the internal drive on your Xbox. A SSD will give you better speeds, but the cost is higher for the same capacity as a mechanical drive. If you want to save a few bucks, you can check Slickdeals for a better price on a 2.5" drive, mechanical or SSD.

Our prices are usually higher than US prices. For comparison, a Crucial Mx500 1TB SSD at a local store is 6,900 pesos (or $142 US). The same product at Amazon sells for $109. Even with the $15 shipping to the Philippines, it's still cheaper than getting the product from a local store.

The weird thing is, we're right next to Taiwan, so in theory our prices should be lower, as opposed to me buying from a US storefront then having it shipped all the way back to Asia.

Yep, I agree. Buy whatever is cheaper. The only main problem is Samsung seems to think their marginal victory over the MX500 with the 860 Evo means they can charge way more for their drive. I mean, looking at 2tb options, here's the MX500 at $229 (actually went up in price since I last bought one) and here's the 860 Evo at $278. The 4tb prices are pretty ridiculous as well, but that's par for the course when talking about 4tb drives that aren't QLC.
