That slim Noctua cooler isn't needed for the case you are buying. I would stick with the stock cooler for now. You can monkey with overclocking down the road, definitely with a higher wattage cooler. My rx 5700xt absolutely demolishes any games I play at 1080p. I am a framerate hog and it runs pretty much every game over 200 fps.
From Amazon: "The onboard 802.11ac WIFI module from Intel supports Dual Band, which runs up to 433 Mbps (3x faster than the 802.11n) and also supports BLUETOOTH 4.2."
So yes. Bluetooth and Wifi out of the box on the motherboard you specified.
Consider buying a 250-500gb solid state drive as a boot drive. You will not regret it. Crucial drives work fine. Likewise Samsung drives are fine too.
Crucial: https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-MX500-500GB-NAND-Internal/dp/B0786QNS9B/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=crucial+mx500+500&qid=1596223378&sr=8-3
Everything else looks fine. Enjoy the build process.
If you have your windows 8 key, try registering windows 10 with it. It might work, it might not. There are 3rd party resellers of win10 pro keys out there. I've bought keys for less than 20$. But proceed with caution.

Although the endurance of a proper enterprise SSD would be best, I just put a pair of these in my R420, and all indications so far is that they're working fine.

Save up \~$100 and buy something like this. You can submit a lower offer to try to get the total around $100 with shipping.
It will give you everything you need to run your 1050Ti.
Future Upgrades:
500GB SSD - $50-$60
16GB RAM - $20 Used (Additional 8GB to what you already have)
Gaming Monitor - $160
Wireless Gaming Mouse - $30
These are just suggestions. I would research and look for deals as many of these parts can be found used or on sale.

Solid state drive, it’s basically around 10x faster than a normal hard drive like you have. Makes things load faster and generally more responsive. Currently you have intel optane, which essentially just makes a teeny sized ssd for stuff that you frequently use and is attached to your hard drive, however it’s not going to be anywhere near as fast as a legit ssd. Here’s a decent one:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0786QNS9B/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_hr3wFb6G9150E
You’d essentially keep your hard drive as just for storage, but put windows (and your most played game(s)) on your solid state drive.
I can provide more articles or answers or whatnot if you’d like, but tldr ssd make compooter go zoom zoom xD most worthwhile upgrade imo.

$60 for 500gb. Or you can go with 1TB for $91.
I'd go with the 1TB, myself.

Pen drives can come unconnected pretty easy, so running unity off of one is pretty crash prone. Thumb drives don’t have stellar performance relative to an actual ssd either.
Most removable media are formatted fat32 so they work with windows/mac/linux but theres a max file size of like 4gb, which can break things.
If you can add another hard drive you should definitely do that, it will make your life so much easier. They’re pretty cheap:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0786QNS9B/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_ACRFFb054PPMQ
If you can’t add, replacing the main drive is also very worthwhile.
The good news is that you’re not running xcode which wants to eat literally all of your non replaceable macbook hard drive. :(

Yes all of these gpu options will be supported on an intel cpu but also I would HIGHLY suggest that you get a ssd for your pc as well maybe a 256 or 500 gb Sata ssd on the cheap but don’t skimp out too much cause some trash 20 dollar ssds are slower than your hdd but a ssd like this
https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-MX500-500GB-NAND-Internal/dp/B0786QNS9B/ref=asc_df_B0786QNS9B/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=309818716690&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=6547968560427038217&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9006820&hvtargid=pla-412309948690&psc=1
Will drastically improve performance mainly loading speeds and boot time. Also unfortunately although you have a great foundation for a gaming system with your intel cpu and 75hz monitor on the front of productivity work mainly software like cad which you might need for engineering prefer Ryzen with significant performance improvements with amd over intel and there isn’t much to do to change that also for productivity work and gaming you typically need 16gbs of ram now a days... and that graphics card is basically no better than the integrated so I would return it and use the integrated graphics for now.
Edit also the intel cpu is just about as fast as a Ryzen 3 3100 only a little bit slower so don’t worry about those cards bottlenecking it it will probably still get along fine with those cards. Also if you are on a tight budget you can get a rx 570 although the cpu might be having performance left on the table then...

Here’s the most common one to use and pretty cheap. More expensive the more capacity you want of course. This is what I have in my mid 2012.

$60 for a good sized SSD. Half the capacity of the default 1TB HDD but that's not really an issue... you can fit a lot of games into 500GB, especially if you're not into bloatware like Modern Warfare. I run all of my games and data off of a 500GB SSD (it's a WD instead of Crucial due to a sale at the time I was looking for another drive) and regularly float 60-100GB empty space despite having several big budget games installed at any given time.
1 points • AirwipeTempest
Looks solid to me. But at least get a 500tb ssd, be it SATA or NVME - you won’t regret it. Use it as a boot drive and maybe a drive for some games that would need an SSD.
1 points • WildSauce
It definitely doesn't cost $100 to get a SSD with DRAM. It is maybe a $20 premium in most cases, if anything. For example OP suggested buying a $55 PNY SSD with 500 GB storage and no DRAM. This Crucial MX500 has a DRAM cache for $15 more. A bit more shopping around could probably find you an even better deal.
1 points • bittybirtybunny
Ahhhh yeah the SSD and more RAM will make your life with older gear a little easier. I'd start with the SSD and then move on to the RAM even though the SSD is a little more expensive.
This is the SSD that I bought for my 2011 MacBook Pro: https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-MX500-500GB-NAND-Internal/dp/B0786QNS9B/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=Crucial+MX500+500GB+3D+NAND+SATA+2.5+Inch+Internal+SSD+-+CT500MX500SSD1%28Z%29&qid=1581992955&sr=8-1

In terms of performance per dollar at the sub-$300 price, there's nothing new that will beat an old Optiplex.
Optiplex 3020 - i5 4590, 8GB RAM - $130 used
Crucial MX500 500GB SATA SSD - $58 new
Geforce GT 1030 2GB - $89 new (This is optional. Roblox runs just fine on integrated graphics, but runs better on this, and it won't require a new PSU because it runs on PCIe power only.)
That's the list. Under max budget, and my kids have similar computers that run these games like a champ. They can even run those weird fan games about the animatronic dolls, made in Unreal Engine 4, reasonably well at low settings. The 3020 doesn't have built in Wifi, but any $20 USB adapter will do.

Ok I have a good solution for you. Your mbp model features thunderbolt 2 ports if I’m correct. Get a thunderbolt 2 to usb c (tb3) adapter like this from Apple: https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MMEL2AM/A/thunderbolt-3-usb-c-to-thunderbolt-2-adapter
and connect it to this usb c external HD enclosure with this 2.5” SSD: https://www.amazon.com/AUKEY-Enclosure-External-Supports-Tool-Free/dp/B01NAG8OGF/ref=mp_s_a_1_6?keywords=usb+c+2.5+enclosure&qid=1578193715&sprefix=usb+c+2.5&sr=8-6
https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-MX500-500GB-NAND-Internal/dp/B0786QNS9B/ref=mp_s_a_1_5?keywords=2.5+ssd&qid=1578193744&sr=8-5
You’ll get top speeds with the thunderbolt connection to usb c. You’ll get about 600 MBs per second read and about the same write. That’ll speed it up.

Either a 500GB MX500 for $65 or a 1TB MX500 for $110.

Hello there
Drives (HDDs especially once you get higher) have lower price per gigabyte the higher you go. A 1tb hard drive is not a good value as it costs ~$25 per terabyte, if you were to get a hard drive I would get higher capacity ones, but read below.
I would just buy a 500gb SSD for 50 bucks: https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-MX500-500GB-NAND-Internal/dp/B0786QNS9B?psc=1
A comparable 250gb SSD while being half the capacity only costs 5 dollars less! For 5 bucks you get double the capacity!
The MX500 comes with a 5 year warranty, most consumer hard drives come with a 2 or 3 year warranty.
You can always add more hard drives if you end up downloading media that does not benefit from being on SSDs.

Yes it will. I’d do 16GB of ram not 8. Get yourself a 2012 tho. It has usb 3. The 2011 only has the older usb 2. Much much slower data transfer. I got a 2012 myself last year and use it for backups & a media server. Installed a 500GB crucial SSD. & 16GB of ram. It runs really smooth. Don’t over spend on ram. It’s not necessary. Here is a Amazon link to the SSD & Ram I used. Btw I paid $200 for a unit in great condition on fb marketplace.
Good luck 😎

Good deal for quality ssd. I would also note for only $19 & $20 more you can double the drive capacity while staying same quality of components: $55 500GB MX500 or the $53 500GB Samsung 860 EVO , both which also have DRAM and TLC IIRC.

For a HDD for documents & offline games, get a WD Blue or a Seagate Barracuda. Currently 4TB versions of either are 80USD on Amazon.
Don't get the WD NAS HDD you linked, especially the 2TB capacity - it might run louder & hotter because it's for a different use case (server use).
With HDDs, load times into games are negligible when comparing 5400 vs 7200 RPM. If you really want games to load faster, get another SSD as a game drive. For instance, the 1TB 860 Evo is 100USD; the 500GB MX500 is 54USD - you could spend the remaining 46USD on a 1TB/2TB HDD.
Make sure you have a spare SATA data cable to install the new drive.

It also looks like the M.2 version is a tad cheaper right now than the 2.5” version, so I guess I should just go for that?

Download the Windows 10 update assistant and just let it run for a while. You may want to download Crystaldiskinfo as well just to make sure that the hard drive is healthy. If the program says "Caution" you will definitely need to replace it with an SDD which is recommended regardless.
I have used this drive many times and its performance and price is excellent:

You should really look at getting a solid state drive if you don't already have one. That will provide ths peed boost you are talking about in terms of storage if you are in fact using a Hard Disk drive like the one you just purchased.
Check out a MX500 or the 860 evo if you need suggestions. SSD is something you may not want to buy used, I have had good luck though.

SSD Suggestion would be this one or a decent Samsung one. Both are excellent choices. Run Windows from the SSD and put your my documents and such on the HDD (saves read/writes on the SSD).
Videocard wise.. Well its kinda up there at the moment. AMD has some nice cards and so does nVidia. Thats a personal choice. Also your board does not have a m.2 slot so no use looking for a m.2 ssd. Just go sata its plenty fast.
2 points • CuriousPCBuilder
So... Yeah, I felt some pain, but don't worry, we can fix this :)
There are some problems, some small like the CPU which isn't bad but it's not the best CPU in terms of value/performances ratio, you shouldn't get 32GB of RAM because it's quite useless to go over 16GB and it eats away too much of the budget, but the main big "problem" is the GPU, the RX 550 is very weak, it isn't recommended at all...
So, here is what I suggest: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/CuriouslyBuildingPC/saved/hcPDqs
The SSD doesn't show up in PCPartPicker for some reason so I'll link it here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0786QNS9B?pf_rd_r=0BW1ZRW1826YS6CNV369&pf_rd_p=6fc81c8c-2a38-41c6-a68a-f78c79e7253f
CPU: Ryzen 3 3100, one of the best budget CPUs on the market, it performs like the Ryzen 5 2600 but is less expensive, it's a better choice, it comes with a nice cooler in the box so no need to buy a separate one
Motherboard: a budget A520 motherboard, nothing special here but it is better than any A320 motherboard you could get
RAM: 16GB (2X8) 3000MHz CL16, good RAM for this CPU, you can have it run at 3200MHz too, it's a good choice and has a good price
SSD: a very nice 500GB SSD with DRAM on it, something many SSDs lack and it makes a big difference, I wouldn't suggest a DRAM-less SSD in any build in 2020
GPU: RX 570 4GB, a good budget GPU that is way more powerful than any RX 550, not even close, this would be a way better choice
Case: I wouldn't recommend the Q300L, airflow in that case will be bad regardless of how many fans you add and you also get an acrylic side-panel, not a glass one, and that can scratch very easily... Instead I suggest this Gamdias case, it looks extremely nice, has a good price, has 2 RGB fans included at the front, you can add a simple fan at the back if you feel like you need it but it's not essential, has a glass side-panel and nice airflow thanks to some openings in the front-panel
PSU: a nice 550W power supply from a reliable brand, 80+ Bronze certified and has all-black cables that will look nice in a case with a clear side-panel
This system also has a bit of a nice theme going on as both the RAM and the GPU are Phantom Gaming ones, which is nice, gives the build some sinergy...
Hope this helps :)

T420 Upgrades. Will these parts work?
Looking to do three things with my T420. I do CAD and CAM work so a little more strain on the machine than the usual.
First, it has a 500GB HDD, and I want to replace it with a SSD. I have chosen this one based on several articles. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0786QNS9B/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1
Second, I'd like to upgrade the RAM but not sure exactly what I need. Will this work? Looking to get the best price on a 16GB setup.
Third, I want to use the HDD that I am replacing as a storage drive. What do I need to be able to run this? Can I even do it? I know it will require and empty slot somewhere.
1 points • jitae1126
There are plenty of better options than that 256GB 860 pro for that price. You could get an MX500 500GB SSD or M.2 for more storage and at a lower price. There should also be cheaper ones out there than the MX500 or 860.
You could get a 2TB Seagate hard drive for $5 more.
The 750W PSU is unnecessary, 600-650 will be plenty and still leaves you room to continue using it when you upgrade later on.

>Facebook, email, Youtube, and recipes
Not to be rude, but couldn't a phone do this?
If she really doesn't want a laptop, then you have a few options. First, ask your boyfriend to check if your computer has an SSD, and if not, make him install one for you. That should take care of the slow speeds of your machine.
Secondly, if you want a new machine, look on eBay for "Dell Optiplex 8GB i5". These are refurbished machines pulled from an upgrade cycle from large companies or institutions/universities. They usually have minor scratches on them but most come with Windows already installed, a hard drive, and is in fully working condition for less than 300.
Here's an example:
-
Dell OptiPlex 3020 Tower Intel Core i5-4570 3.2GHz 8GB, 500GB, Win10 Pro ($139).
-
1080p 21.5" IPS monitor ($90).
-
500GB SSD ($63)
For a total of $292. This will be a very fast machine. Please ask someone knowledgeable with computers to install the SSD for you and install Windows on it and you're set. I am willing to explain why I chose the parts I have if you want, but if you're not bothered, then I can say this will be plenty fast.

First of all don't ever buy a pre built, they cheap out on parts and they are a horrible value. DIY PC for 800$.
The best thing you can do is to add a ssd (for OS and few select number of games) and upgrade to a set of 16gb of ram
1 points • Wise_Limit_6203
you can only add a 2.5" inch SSD, but since you also didn't specify your desired storage amount iv'e listed various sizes
here's some good ones
1 points • Harry-wells
Just checked your model, it'll take a standard 2.5" SSD in place of the HDD. You currently have 250~GB. Heres a couple options:
Both of these options are well rated with ample cache, giving you the best possible speeds. Other, cacheless options are available. They'll be cheaper, but not quite as fast. Still far better than a HDD though. And then energy savings alone are worth it. They'll give you longer user times between charges because there are no moving parts, like HDD's use.
You might also want to think about uograding your RAM. Looks like you only have 4GB. You're models supports 32GB max (2x16GB DDR3) but for an older model laptop thats overkill. I did find this.
OLOy is a good, reputable brand. I use their ram in my newest build. They're also some of the cheapest. Good luck.

You acknowledge this, but with shipping costs it literally isn't worthwhile regardless of what part, and some of the parts are also used.

I would counter that SSD for a Crucial MX500 as it is rated as one of the best SSDs for only $3 more. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0786QNS9B/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Also the 1650 Super is a very good choice, as the Super series are very valuable. Check out this screenshot of cost per frame thanks to Hardware Unboxed on Youtube. https://gyazo.com/a7a764a20fdb19dde405161f70ac2814 I know this will be for your VR gaming, but I just wanted to include the average framerate of the 1650 Super over 17 games which was 73fps on 1080p ultra. https://gyazo.com/47eec9c898e52629e2d48b2a42f9802c So you should be able to play most games with some tweaks to get your desired framerate. It should last you a few years before you'll need to upgrade, as it is a budget card afterall. I think you've got a very good budget build going with bacon_jews recommendation.
