Yea I've got G skills 2x16 3600mhz CL16 trident Z NEO kit in for my Ryzen 3600x specifically for flight sims like DCS and FS2020.

Looks like that particular kit is sold out or price gouged to hell.

I did find these, 3200mhz c16 isn't the fastest ram on the market, but 115 bucks for 32 gigs of that speed from Corsair seems pretty good to me.

Get this ram for $120 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B016ORTNI2/:

And get this used from “Amazon Warehouse” for $405 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07WP6TYQ3/

This is on an assumed $1200-1400 budget due to your board and PSU selection btw.

thanks for the reply. Gaming, browsing & programming only, no photo/video editing. I am planning to get the 6 core ryzen 5 5600x instead of the 8 core 3700x when it's released next month but couldn't find it on pc part picker.

As far as ram, I agree 32gb is overkill but the price difference is only 4% of the system cost and I don't like to stress about closing my browser tabs or IDE before opening my games, and also would like this PC to last a long time. However, I have read that I may need to opt for a low profile ram variant that's a little pricier to properly fit in the sg13?

Good point on the NR200 bigger air cooling potential. I like the look of the NR200 but the drawbacks I'm seeing are $30 more, takes up more space when moving it (though not much more desk space gone) and only supporting the more expensive SFX PSUs. I suppose an equivalent build would be roughly the difference between 16gb and 32gb ram, but if the NR200 would be quieter it would be worth it to me

Adding RAM to existing build

Currently have an i7-8700k on an ASRock Z370 Extreme 4+ using 2 sticks of 8 gb RAM. Just got 2 sticks that were 16 gb each (was thinking it was 4x 8 gb) and was wondering if it will be a problem combining them.

Silly question but what's the difference between 4x8 sticks and 2x16 sticks of DDR4 RAM? Is the 4 in any way better or is it just more expensive and you need to guarantee your mobo etc. can fit 4 sticks? Thank you!

For LPX ram, how does the T-Force Vulcan Z 32gb 3200mhz cl16 compare to the Corsair Vengeance LPX? I bought the latter for $115 recently and I'm wondering if it's worth the hassle to return and save a little bit of money.

Will this ram (Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB (2x16GB) 3200MHz C16 DDR4 DRAM Memory Kit – Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B016ORTNI2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_xOgmFbSJYHPSS)

work with this motherboard (https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/H110M-A-M-2/)?

I know the speed is off, but won’t it just defer to the mobo speed? It’s hard to find 2400. What else do I need to know about matching ram? Thanks!

Hi people, not sure if this is the right place for this question since its, err, a bit complex.

In short, I recently got a new kit of ram stick (2x16gb C16 DDR4 3200, those fancy Corsair LPX Vengeance ones). When I installed them I used a software known as CAM to check storage and speed, to find it was at its 2133 (Which is its SPD speed) and when into bios to turn on XMP.

After doing that my PC would not boot, and I had to switch them out to boot back into the bios and turn it off (Which it would then boot with the new sticks) and reset it to automatic. I've been trying my hardest to figure out whats wrong, with no luck.

Heres a full list of specs, including my motherboard

1070 GTX GPU

AMD Ryzen 5 1600x six-core processor 3.60ghz CPU

AMD B350M MORTAR motherboard

(new) 2x16gb C16 DDR4 3200Mhz (old) 2x8gb CL19 DDR4 2666Mhz

All my research says this stuff should support the speed and ram, though I admit I'm a bit of a newb at this! Thanks to anyone who might know something about this problem.

The CPU is Overkill as hell for DCS, no problems there, the GPU is really fine and decent, will be plenty. I play at 1440p60 fps low-medium settings, or 1080@30 at high-ultra on a 590- a technically weaker card by \~15%, so you are fine on that front.

One problem though, 8 gigabytes of ram is simply not enough, you may survive, but you'd have to turn off EVERYTHING using task manager down to absolute minimum system functionality-critical processes, even kill windows defender. Then, with a lot of optimization and googling, you should be able to turn down specific settings (or all) to minimum-low to reduce RAM usage, and no multiplayer. Then you should be fine :)

Or I suggest buying another 8 gb of ram, it's REALLY cheap right now, I'd even go as far as to say get 32, 2x16 kits are 110$, ram is nearly cheapest it's ever been, or just buy another 8-gig stick for like 30$ if you have just 1, if you have 2x4, get another 2x4, running quad channel is beneficial to performance. Your experience will be EXTREMELY better and 16 gigs is becoming standard for most games in 2020 \^\^ 8 is still enough for general system use and most games, but not much else, windows takes up more and more each update, even at idle it's eating up 3 for me, if I launch every background app I usually have it's 5.

I have 16 gb @ 3600 MHz (dual channel) and DCS usually doesn't take up more than 15, even on 50-player servers like Growling Sidewinder's Open Conflict that's constantly above 20 players, often gets to 50+. At that point the rest of my system tends to lag at ground level though, mostly my graphics card with 4 gigs of VRAM.

Hope this helps :)

How do I know if RAM is compatible with my motherboard?

Specifically, I want to know if the MSI Z390-A Pro would work with the Corsair Vengeance LPX.

But I would also like to know how to determine this on my own in the future.

Yes - but remember to change the XMP profile in your bios after you install them. If it's set to profile # 2 (which I think is the setting for 2933Mhz) then change it to #1.

Press F2 to enter bios at startup

I can't remember the exact number to hit after the bios, but I think it's under performance. You only have 2 choices for memory overclocking XMP #1 and XMP#2. One of these will work because the default configs for the R11 are 2933 and 3200.

Oh and while I can't say 100% on whether your choice of RAM will work (unfortunately installing overclocked RAM is never a precise science) you might also want to look at this:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B016ORTNI2/ref=crt_ewc_title_dp_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

It's $119 ($40 off). The good thing about Amazon is returns are easy if it doesn't work out.

The Western Digital WD Blue SN550 and Samsung 970 EVO are both good NVMe M.2 drives (Both about $50 for 500GB, and they are on the faster end of ssds).

The 3060ti is a great gpu, the fastest on the market in the $400 price range. It'll be difficult to get one however, and will require either some diligence in staying up to date on restocks or a couple of months of waiting in order to acquire one. However, you can also go to the used market to get a gpu for significantly cheaper than MSRP. If you can find a 1080ti for less than $350, it would probably be a great deal and easier to get than one of the newer cards that just released.

Your psu is fine, it should be able to easily handle these upgrades unless you do some monstrous overclocking/cooling on your components, you've still got some headroom even after your upgrades.

This set of 16gb x 2 ram is good, and on sale rn as well for $130. (lowest its ever been as far as I can tell. https://www.amazon.com/Corsair-2x16GB-3200MHz-Memory-CMK32GX4M2B3200C16/dp/B016ORTNI2/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=corsair+vengeance+32gb&qid=1608107279&sr=8-3

Not a bother at all.

Your motherboard is fine I believe. You should be able to throw in any of those speeds as long as its DDR4. I'd recommend 3200 but 3000MHz is definitely fine. Given that you aren't using Ryzen that 200MHz gap won't make a huge difference.

32GB @ 3200MHz

32GB @ 3200MHz This one is RGB if you're into that.

You could also look into a 16GB Kit to save some cost.

I also looked around and found this old forum that might be worth reading, it seems others have had problems with heavy RAM overclocking on your board, meaning your best bet might be to get new RAM.

Feel free to ask as many questions as you need and once again good luck!

I'd love to get your all's opinion... Thinking about upgrading to NAS based storage. Currently am storing things across 3 drives (10, 8 and 5 TB WD external drives respectively.

Looking at upgrading to the following:

(1)Synology 6 Bay NAS DiskStation - DS1618+ (Diskless)

for the NAS

(5) Seagate IronWolf 10TB NAS Internal Hard Drive HDD – CMR 3.5 Inch SATA 6Gb/s 7200 RPM 256MB Cache for RAID Network Attached Storage

for the drives

then boosting the RAM with Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB (2x16GB) 3200MHz C16 DDR4 DRAM Memory Kit – Black

All of this running on my Mac Mini (Late 2014) 2.6Ghz Dual-Core Intel i5 with 8GB RAM...running Plex Media Server

Thoughts?

Damn, that’s what I’m worried about. I wonder if I could just buy a kit and test it out and return it if it doesn’t work. Do you have any recommendations for how to test it on the first day to make sure it will be stable?

Do you think this Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 3200 C16 2x16GB kit would be worth a shot?

Or actually this Corsair Vengeance LPX kit is cheaper and has the same stats without the RGB which I don’t need.

Or to stick with Crucial, this Ballistix kit has the same stats too.

Threadripper-based Workstation Server Question

Hello all,

I am thinking of building a Threadripper 2950x (or 2990WX depending on how work goes over the next while) based system that would run Unraid.

Mainly, this system will be for hosting, programming, VMs for practice, Dockers, remote development, etc. Here are my estimated specs:

If I were to get the 2990WX, I'd like to toy with the idea of virtualizing my main windows PC. I could comfortably give out the same specs as my current PC which has an R7 2700x + 32gb ram + 2080 and passthrough the 2080. Mainly, I was wondering if there would be performance drawbacks from virtualizing a windows PC inside of Unraid for gaming and VR? Also, if possible, I'd love to go full-time on Ubuntu/PopOS, does anyone know if the gaming scene has gotten better there? Am I able to do VR? Also, does Ubuntu use GPUs well? Or, should I just virtualize two PCs: 1 Ubuntu/PopOS for daily tasks (programming, writing, etc) and one dedicated for gaming?

Lastly, if I were to virtualize, what are some fun things I could do with my R7 + mobo? If I went all-in on a 2990WX Unraid server, I'd move over the PSU from my main PC (850W), but I have an extra 550W I could put in there, maybe for a HTPC?

Or, should I just virtualize Ubuntu and keep my dedicated gaming PC?

Frustrated with RAM compatibility, need help

Hi there.

I have tried to figure it out on my own, but I have contained my rage for long enough.

I am looking at getting the Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Pro Wifi

https://www.amazon.com/GIGABYTE-Z390-AORUS-PRO-Motherboard/dp/B07HRZKPXM/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=aorus+pro+wifi&qid=1591986838&s=electronics&sr=1-1

According to the compatibility list, https://download.gigabyte.com/FileList/Memory/mb_memory_z390-aorus-pro-wifi_191113.pdf the RAM in the following links should be fine! Yet if I look at the lists on Corsair and G.Skill I can't find those exact models. I don't know who to believe!! Bunch of the RAM on the Gigabyte list is sold out as well.

if you look the right places you can score a RX 5600xt for less than $350 which has similar performance to a RTX 2060S, also loose the flashy ram you could get 32gb of Vengance LPX for around $120 (dual channel), you can also find the Same Mobo for $240 if you look on amazon. Since you would be saving a little bit of money on the Mobo you could get a Ryzen 5 3600. you should also get a much better storage drive as you only have 250gb currently. you also need to beef up your PSU look for a 550W or even a 600W

Definitely look into PCPartPicker.com. They do a fantastic job of allowing you to customize your own builds without much knowledge of specific parts.

MoBo:
For the motherboard, the B450 Gaming Plus Max from MSI is a pretty unknown one that definitely gets the job done, for a pretty cheap price too. The only downside is that you will need to install a WiFi/Bluetooth stick into one of the PCIe slots, but with a usual sized GPU (like the one I will recommend) this shouldn't be an issue. Do a little research on the motherboard though, because this is arguably what makes or breaks your build, and finding the one for you is definitely important.

CPU:
My go-to processor for budget builds is definitely the Ryzen 5 3600. It's a fantastic processor that comes with a more than capable air cooler (The Stealth Wraith). I have one in my build, and I never reach past 25% usage by playing any modern game on high graphics.
https://www.amazon.com/AMD-Ryzen-3600-12-Thread-Processor/dp/B07STGGQ18

GPU:
I am a huge fan of NVIDIA's RTX series GPUs. The 2070 Super is the one I currently have in my build, but it's on the more expensive end for a budget build. With an RTX 2060, you will definitely be able to run the games listed on medium to high graphics, but in order to play upcoming games on high graphics settings, a stronger GPU will definitely be required. The 2060 is more than enough to be able to run these games baseline, though. https://www.amazon.com/MSI-GeForce-RTX-2060-VENTUS/dp/B07PBLD2MX/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=GeForce+RTX+2060&qid=1594944496&refinements=p_n_feature_keywords_five_browse-bin%3A6147187011&s=pc&sr=1-1

RAM:
For RAM, most people recommend 16GB but I am a strong advocate for 32+ if you have any interest in coding. 32GB of RAM will still be cautious of your budget, so I'd say to go for 2x16. Technically, going for 4x8 sticks of RAM will give you better performance, but will also be more expensive at the end of the day. I'll recommend the Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x16 RAM sticks to you because Corsair is definitely a reputable manufacturer and the Vengeance sticks are definitely more than capable. Here you go: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B016ORTNI2?tag=duckduckgo-d-20&linkCode=osi&th=1&psc=1

The case is completely up to you. The only thing that is necessary under this category is that each of these pieces fit in the case. Use PCPartPicker.com to put in your case, then follow through and enter these pieces to make sure they fit the case you choose. One more piece of advice for the case: read the reviews, and watch 1-2 YouTube videos before you buy it.

Definitely let me know what you decide to do. Good luck!

Notes:

Since you want 2x High resolution monitors it is really hard to stay in budget. monitor should do your job with its size, resolution, color accuracy and refresh rate

For this resolution you will need a powerful graphic card for both Animation & Gaming so i gone for 5700xt and for a decent one

For this use purpose you would need at least Ryzen 3600 so there it is but if there is any budget headroom may strected further you should seek 3700x 3800x

You will need probably more ram but i choose 2x16gb 3200mhz so you can add another 32gb if you will need/have the budget for later.

Case Psu etc. should do the job with good looks. I choose ssd because you will need read speeds in your system and more space than regular 1tb hdd. This should be your all-in-one solution for storage.

Graphic tablet is a recommendation from my friend. I will go for 15.6 XP-pen Artist Pro later this year since i started lightly making my own assets for a game project but it was much more expensive. Tho im not sure you will need this scale of a tablet with screen since some places in my are uses no-screen little drawing pads instead but i find them rather hard to use honestly.

If you have further questions feel free to ask!
