Oooh, the old style DataBank. My first digital watch. Christmas, 1986 or so. I was psyched. Thanks Grandad 😌❤️

Still rocking the very classic-looking GShock Solar Atomic as my daily driver. Partly as a tribute to Grandad.

I have nicer watches for special occasions but — incidentally, if you’re curious — I would absolutely recommend this little juggernaut to anyone who finds ruthless functionality beautiful. I have literally dropped it four stories with no detriment.

The F91W also looks too small on my 8" wrist. I bought this Casio recently, and it looks like an F91W on a normal person.

That's the one I'd get, but I can't justify the price. I know it's the Japan model and it has a screw back but for less than half the price I got a square that does the same job https://www.amazon.com/Casio-G-Shock-GWM5610-1-Tough-Solar/dp/B007RWZHXO/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=g+shock+square+tough+solar&qid=1594020502&sprefix=gshock+square&sr=8-1

I got mine on amazon, it’s incredible, I already did things to it that would have destroyed any other watch, I’m hooked. Feels awesome on my wrist, absolutely ideal.

Here’s the link so you can pick one up, it’s probably cheaper on amazon than it would be if you found it in a store anyway: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007RWZHXO?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

Price had jumped up to $140 recently, back down to $95, which is a pretty amazing price for what you get.

Yeah, so why not solar G-Shock? In the grand scheme of things one surfer isn’t going to be filling landfills if their watch dies every couple yrs. But I do feel better about having a lifetime tool.

Don’t sleep on the atomic clock sync. Especially useful during wfh zoom situations.

Less familiar with them. There are good watches out there at sub 50, but this is the best watch u can buy in my opinion for close to that. It’s solar, will last forever, indestructible waterproof, light, and has atomic time so it’s always accurate without setting urself https://www.amazon.com/Casio-G-Shock-GWM5610-1-Tough-Solar/dp/B007RWZHXO

Question about buying a GW-M5610-1 on amazon

Hello. I was looking to purchase the watch on amazon but there are two listings of the same watch. One of the listings is about 88$ but the other one is sold out (It's normally normally around 100$). Is it safe to buy the cheaper one?

Sold out one(More expensive)

Cheaper one

Thanks!

Without any context of features, size, colors, here's what came to mind

#1 GWM5610-1 (mentioned above)

- Because I want this one

- Iconic and will fit in with your collection (if you so choose) literally forever

#2 GA2000

- Because I saw a post here today with a similar one, and it looked awesome

- It's not as popular, but has a great ana-digi look IMO

Of your 2 choices I'd go Casioak. If you are referencing the new GLides that's all over the sub right now, I think it looks wrong. Something about the case border and screen just feel....off, but that's my personal opinion.

G-Shocks are the gold standard for ultra-durable watches, but they're not exactly stylish. The smaller, lower-profile models are also among the cheapest: DW5600 and GWM5610. The DW5600 is your basic watch with a 2-year battery, while the GWM5610 has a solar-recharged battery that should last 10-15+ years given sufficient light. The GWM5610 is also atomic, which means that the time and date can be automatically set if she's in a supported area. She does need to set her timezone, though.

Something more fashionable, but much more expensive and less durable, would be an Apple Watch (requires an iPhone). The latest models have always-on displays, and a steel/sapphire model would be reasonably durable. She just shouldn't accidentally drop one onto a hard surface like a concrete floor. That could damage/destroy them (but this is true for most watches). G-Shocks, on the other hand, would laugh at her feeble attempts at damaging them.

This one has the time keeping and solar feature you are looking for. And if you are patient you can get them for 60-70 on Amazon. Buying an after market metal case for 50 then you have pretty much the same watch for 110-120. Here is a video of a guy building his own metal G-shock square.

If you're looking to get your feet wet into the world of Casio G-Shock, I cannot recommend enough the DW5600E-1V If solar/atomic truly is a necessity, then I would go with the GWM-5610-1 You can spend hundreds upon hundreds of dollars on a G-Shock, but the modules are all so similar. Although I wish I had a Bluetooth model, I'm doing just fine with my 5610.

Depends on your budget. I'd recommend a cheap G Shock if you're going to be rough with it. There are so many models. Features to consider:

  • shape: square (more like rectangular) or round
  • solar powered
  • multiband 6: automatic time sync
  • color

The watch will be cheaper without solar and multiband 6. I found those features useful so I paid for them.

My preference is for the square watches, so here are 2 examples:

Casio Men's G-Shock Quartz Watch with Resin Strap, Black, 20 (Model:/W5600E-1V) $45ish

Casio Men's G-Shock Quartz Watch with Resin Strap, Black, 20 (Model:/WM5610-1) $90ish, has solar and multiband 6.

Oh interesting. I just bought the GW-M5610  two years ago as my first G-Shock. Good pick then :). It was like 90 bucks. Looks like you can still buy it for 100 on Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/Casio-G-Shock-GWM5610-1-Tough-Solar/dp/B007RWZHXO/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=GW-M5610&qid=1590354658&sr=8-1), so I wouldn't say it's rare?!

>Accuracy: Modern quartz/battery operated watches are generally more consistently accurate than mechanical wristwatches. Quartz watches are typically accurate to +/-1 second per day.

So about 30 seconds off per month is within tolerances (or the mathematical limits) of accuracy

Here is high accuracy quartz:

>next one will be atomic for sure.

I have the GWM5610

Great question, and one I've given plenty of thought to myself.

So here's the issue I see, is with: > Something that’ll set the time automatically going from time zone to time zone.

The issue is that radio-sync watches usually sync once every 24 hours, and it's usually at night when there's less interference. (That's the case with my two, anyway, the digital Casio GWM-5610 and the analog Citizen AT4010-50E.) So you can't just step off the plane and have the right time without doing something. Worse, you're supposed to keep the watch relatively still as its syncing. It may work if you're walking; I haven't tried. (That said, the GWM-5610 is nice because it has a ton of time zones—or maybe all of them—programmed into it, so it's easy to switch to a specific one.)

If you want an immediate sync, then a smartwatch or other Bluetooth watch really is the best option. If you have phone service where you're going, it will update with no effort on your part.

Can't speak to GPS watches—not sure how often they sync, but I assume it's not continuously.

Another thing to consider is just getting something digital. I went on a long overseas trip last year, stopping in four foreign countries. I wore my Timex Ironman because it has three time zones and you can switch between them very quickly. Really, though, I only cared about two time zones (my home time zone and wherever I was currently). Three was nice but since I was in five time zones on the trip it wasn't "enough" to eliminate any hassle. I realized halfway through the trip that I could just check the clock app on my phone if I put all the relevant cities there. Since almost all digital watches can adjust the hour really quickly, it's not hard at all to be like, "oh, next stop is six hours ahead" and just set the watch six hours forward in a few seconds. So for me, I'd just wear something digital I already had, in my case probably that GWM-5610, but it may not fit your exact use case.

The solar G5600E is a safe bet, or this if you want the radio sync feature (and live in range of a transmitter).

Hi, everyone. For sale is my G-ShockGWM 5610 with after-market combi bracelet (purchased on this subreddit). The back of the combi bracelet has some scratches, but otherwise the watch doesn't show much sign of wear, since I rarely wore it.

I'm asking $100 via paypal. CONUS only, please.

Included are the extra combi links and the original resin band. No papers or boxes.

Let me know if you have any questions or would like additional pics. Thanks

You don't need to spend too much on g shocks they're tough at all their price points

Gw6900- solar, atomic and other features. Very low maintenance for this watch. It's sets the time itself and it's solar so need to worry about the battery

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00284ADAI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_t1_Uj7cEbXMB909J

Gw5600 same features as above but just different shape

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007RWZHXO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_t1_.m7cEbMBH222D

Gx56 -same as the gw5600 minus the atomic feature but is given a dose or ten of steroids

G-shocks are pretty much your go to watches as they are waterproof and can withstand large amounts of abuse. That's why G-shocks are popular with militaries today. Regarding your question, I own the DW-5600 as it's super cheap, fits my smaller wrist, has all the functionalities you mentioned, and there is extensive mods available. There is a Solar version available at a price hike. My friend is training as an RN and his place mandates analog watches so he got this for $80 on the internet. Hope this helps.

Also, was considering these but many claim g shock looks childish, and only should be worn with athletic wear or during actual physical activities. The shit is that I’m always “active”. By nature I’m a physical and rugged guy, regardless if I’m dressed up or down.

Here are the g shocks:

There are perhaps 50+ different models you can buy new for that price. Watches are highly subjective, someone else's dream G-Shock wont be yours. Your watch has to be something you admire every time you look at it.

The G-Shocks in that price range are mostly the digital GD series and ana-digi GA series. The GD-350, GD-400, GA-2000 and GA-21x0 series, the GA-100, GA-110, GA-140, GA-400, GA-700, GA-800, GBA-800, GA-900. You're paying for these being more modern - often larger - G-Shocks. Analog is particularly difficult to make shock resistant. If you're looking for outright features, none of these nor the GBX-100 has solar power nor atomic sync (Multiband 6).

The GWM-5610, GW-B5600, GW-6900, GWM-500, GW-7900, GW-2310, AWG-M100 are all a great value under $150. They are solar powered and atomic sync. These are a perfect grab-and-go maintenance free choices. You wont need to change the battery for over a decade, and they'll sync with an atomic clock nightly. Most of these are a little older, and only one is ana-digi.

My personal favorite G-Shocks that can be found under $150:

GA-21x0 series: the Casioak. I think it has a great look, it's slim, and the shape seems to be more of an ana-digi homage to the classic square than to Audemars Piguet. It's a carbon infused resin case, which seems to be a feature hardly mentioned. That's how it's so slim.

GA-2000: The other carbon G-shock of 2019. I'm surprised this watch doesn't get as much attention. It's the first carbon infused resin watch, and it's insanely comfortable. It has a double layer case back that curves to your wrist, and standard lugs and lug widths make it easy to change straps. Most G-Shocks use proprietary/integrated lugs that need adapters to fit standard straps to. I love the symmetric ana-digi design on this, you can find it in over a dozen colors.

GA-140: "Boombox" inspired design. This watch has just the right amount of detail and complexity. Ana digi with multiple digital displays. Some colors have better legibility than others, but I think it's a very fun design.

GA-800: A more sensible size, simple design, and dual illumination make this one of the better GA series watches.

GBX-100: Modern G-Lide. One of the two you mention, this watch is the cheapest MIP (memory-in-pixel) G-shocks available. Very legible for a negative display, I like the configurability of the screen. Sadly no solar. No atomic but Bluetooth lets it sync the time. Though I keep mine in airplane mode to preserve that battery.

GW-5600: The next generation of the affordable square. This watch is solar and multiband 6, but also has Bluetooth. That's great for people outside of the range of a radio tower, and you can adjust settings with a phone pretty easily. Bluetooth gets flak because we don't know if it can be used in 20 years. But it's entirely optional and ignorable if it's not for you. What doesn't get attention is that the module and display in these is better than the GW-M5610, and I'm fairly certain it will outright replace it over the next few years. The GW-M5610 pricing for most models is only going up, and this watch is just superior in most ways. There are already a dozen colors and there will be dozens more I'm sure.
