This is working for me.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06Y5N3YCD/

Pros:

  • Does DisplayPort for me at 3440x1440@120Hz
  • USB-C PD input - which you can choose to not use (read about the power brick + PD issues)
  • 2 x USB ports
  • Ethernet

Cons:

  • USB ports are USB 2.0
  • Ethernet is 100mbit

You can get "faster" than 100mbit ethernet by using a gigabit dongle, it would end up at around 280mbps according to a google search. I've got USB 3.0 based dock plugged in to one of the USB 2.0 ports and it seems to work well, even gives me a second screen using DisplayLink, if I wanted to (but I don't use it).

There's a dongle with 2 USB 3.0 ports, an Ethernet port, and a DP1.4 port...but its a dongle.

If you’ve burned through six, you might want to try reading the item description before ordering. Most USB Type-C adapters don’t do 4k@60Hz. It’s a limitation of Type-C, you can either have 4k@60Hz or USB 3.0 ports. Most manufacturers choose 4k@30hz + USB 3.0. I use this adapter: Cable Matters USB C Multiport... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06Y5N3YCD?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share, which has 60W charging (always enough for my 2018 15” MacBook Pro), 4k@60 DisplayPort, and two USB 2.0 ports

Here's a particular USB-C multiport hub I'm interested in: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06Y5N3YCD/

With multiport hub, it has:

  • Brand: Cable Matters
  • DisplayPort @ 4K 60Hz, no conversion
  • 2 USB 2.0 ports
  • Fast Ethernet 10/100MB
  • USB PD up to ~60W

I wonder if this hub will work with the PinePhone, as it contains native DisplayPort. Due to some bandwidth used for 4K DisplayPort, there is neither USB 3 nor Gigabit Ethernet provided. If there was HDMI provided instead, this wouldn't be the case.

Sure. It comes from a company from whom I've purchased a cable before, so I trust them.

You're doing it wrong going over HDMI in the first place, you should be going USB-C-DP via alt mode. This way you can do even 4k@60Hz (well, in general - probably not with Samsung phones). This is one of the few adapters that does it right: https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-Multiport-DisplayPort-Ethernet/dp/B06Y5N3YCD/ . There are more (much cheaper) that do only video or video+charging, but you probably want the USB for keyboard/mouse.

There are only a few ones that support 4K@60Hz! Be aware of that. I would suggest this: https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-Multiport-DisplayPort-Ethernet/dp/B06Y5N3YCD/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=cable+matters+dock&qid=1590224343&sr=8-2

I think this adaptor might be your best bet:

https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-Multiport-DisplayPort-Ethernet/dp/B06Y5N3YCD/

It is specifically listed as compatible with the Dell XPS 9560 and had a DisplayPort 1.4 port (def capable of 144Hz).

The only issue is that it is limited to 100Mbps Ethernet for some lame reason. Lacking Gigabit Ethernet is just odd.

If you need Gigabit Ethernet and Displayport 1.4, I would recommend just getting a separate USB-A to Gigabit Ethernet adaptor. Those are dirt cheap anyway.

There's one USB-C dock I'm aware of that can actually do 2x DisplayPort displays at 4K@60Hz without resorting to DisplayLink (aka it actually has a DP 1.4 spec port, and doesn't require Thunderbolt on the host), and it's this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06Y5N3YCD

However, it requires you to bring an MST hub, or have DisplayPort 1.2 compatible displays with daisy-chain ports (you may have them on your monitors, I don't know, so I figure I'd point that out) to support both displays, a limitation/configuration restriction that the Surface Dock 2 does not have. Whether that matters to you or not is up to you of course. It also only provides maximum 60W over USB-C PD, which could leave you in the state where users of Surface Dock 1 are (as it only provides 60W) and be able to use the device and drain power faster than the dock can keep up, allowing you to discharge even while docked.

Note that if you use a USB-C native dock you will also likely suffer from sharing bandwidth if you go with a USB-C Dock with displays and USB devices and/or use the onboard ethernet - and if you go 2x 4K displays, you'll get potentially USB 2.0 speeds at best from a USB-C dock in this mode. Surface Dock 2 uses separate lanes for DP and USB over the SurfLink connector, they're not shared, so that'll be something you'll have to weigh. That USB-C dock will likely be compatible with most USB-C devices out there, not just Surface. However, you give up USB-C data/networking speeds depending on the resolution of the display, and even with a dock that provided 100W USB-C PD you can't keep a Book totally fed with power when under high load, so you could slowly drain the battery even when docked; this also won't happen with the Surface Dock 2. The tradeoff of course is it is a proprietary connector, so it is limited to use just with Surface devices.

What matters is up to you, and I suppose how long you plan on using a Surface.

I’ve got this connected to a 1440p 144hz monitor and have had zero issues. The same company makes adapters with multiple display outputs if you need that.

My main issue is finding a one cable solution for DP, RJ45, 2x USB-A. This is close to what I want, but it only supports 100mb ethernet, and USB 3 would be better if its possible.

Vertical stands are probably marginally better for cooling that standing flat and closed. Leaving the laptop open is better, but unless your really torturing it, I don’t think it matters.

My solution for a dock is this one:

https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-Multiport-DisplayPort-Ethernet/dp/B06Y5N3YCD/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=cable+matters+usb+c&qid=1587226954&sprefix=cavle+matters&sr=8-2

Cheap, supports 4K, ports for mouse and keyboard if they’re not wireless, pass through power - it is all I need.

Assuming that your monitors have Displayport inputs, you could use something like this for the 1st monitor. It would drive the monitor and feed power back into the laptop.

https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-Multiport-DisplayPort-Ethernet/dp/B06Y5N3YCD

Then use something like this to connect the 2nd monitor.

https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-DisplayPort-Aluminum-Compatible/dp/B07F17ZHJY

That's 2 cables to plug into the laptop, but much cheaper than messing around with TB3 docks or eGPU.

You might also want to buy a spare USB-C power adapter, so you can leave one plugged into the dock.

There is no Thunderbolt support on AMD laptops for this generation, but it may change in the future.

You'll want a DisplayPort 1.4 dock as HDMI cannot drive 4K@60hz. I have this dock by CableMatters and can verify it works well. They make a similar one with 2x DisplayPort 1.4 that I think should work. Just make sure to use the DisplayPort connector on the laptop (left side iirc).

If you are fine with USB2 - there are some affordable non-brand solutions: DisplayPort or HDMI/DP. That article did list a couple already but wanted to make sure that you consider other options before investing in a Thunderbolt 3 dock.

If you mean a dock with USB-C output w/ DisplayPort passthrough, I haven't seen one except for Thunderbolt docks. What I meant was use a hub with a DisplayPort.

If you don't need 4k, get something like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B084ZDPNTT (it will only do 4k at 30 Hz)

If you need 4k 60 Hz, you will have to either make do with USB 2.0 ports with something like this:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06Y5N3YCD
or go with a Thunderbolt hub which are way more expensive.

I just leave it attached to the display along with my power adapter, mouse, keyboard. So I only have to plug in a single cable.

new update: everything keeps working fine after a few days shutting down, rebooting, unplugging and plugging back in, config does not change.

My setup was using 3 ports out of the 4 on my MBP, 1 for USB-C/DP cable, 1 for power cord and another one with an adapter to use the USB upstream of the monitor to connect a camera + wireless mouse/keyboard.

Still I wanted to clean it up, so i bought this hub: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06Y5N3YCD/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

now i only use 1 USB-C port of MBP and it's a "cleaner" install, working fine so far, everything runs through the hub.

On my previous note around SIP still being enabled, it restricts some of the extra functionality of SwitchResX but I only cared about the resolution anyway. for window size/management i use an app from the app store called "BetterSnapTool", it's good enough for my needs as well.

Hi - author of that blog here.

If you're OK with 100Mbps Ethernet get this: https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-Multiport-DisplayPort-Ethernet/dp/B06Y5N3YCD/

File transfers in between computers on your local network may be slower than what you're used to - but Internet speeds will likely be unaffected unless you are paying for a dedicated business line with >100Mbps sustained throughput. If your site has wi-fi, you may be able to setup Windows to use NIC teaming to use both wi-fi and Ethernet...

With the Pro 7, there are a new breed of hubs that will run 2x 4K60 monitors along with Gigabit Ethernet etc. However they are rather expensive. You need to look for hubs that support DP 1.4.

https://dancharblog.wordpress.com/2019/10/10/dual-4k-60hz-monitors-via-usb-c-with-displayport-1-4/

AFAIK, there are no budget options that have these newer chipsets inside supporting 4K60 and Gig Ethernet.

Cheers,

Dan

Yes, the X1C7 can definitely handle dual 4K at 60 Hz, but you must use either Thunderbolt (not USB-C, which uses the same plug but has insufficient bandwidth for 2x4K60) or connect one monitor per USB-C port (so you'd need a hub like this one for power). You can either use that hub plus a cheaper USB-C to DisplayPort adapter (just make sure it supports 4K60), or a Thunderbolt dock such as the CalDigit TS3+. I have the TS3+ and it's a bit expensive, but it's an excellent dock. Note that you still need a USB-C to DisplayPort adapter with the TS3+, since it only has one DisplayPort.

So to recap, cheaper option: USB-C hub with DisplayPort plus USB-C to DisplayPort adapter. Expensive, but single cable dock/undock solution: Thunderbolt dock (and possibly a USB-C to DisplayPort adapter, depending on the ports on the dock).

The reason HDMI can't do 60 Hz on the X1C is because the built-in GPU only supports HDMI 1.4, while HDMI 2.0 is required for 4K60.

Again, not sure if it's legit, and your laptops would have to be 3.2 as well I'm assuming.

XPS can even output 4K 60Hz if you get the right adapter.

A dock has the advantage of giving your more ports, ethernet, and power delivery as well, one cable to rule them all.

I have used this one here before on Amazon, but wouldn't recommend it, it was somewhat flaky, like screen would just randomly cut out for a second a couple of times a day: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06Y5N3YCD/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I now switched to using two of these monitors here: https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/ultrasharp-25-usb-c-monitor-u2520d/apd/210-avkg/monitors-monitor-accessories They come with a built-in USB-C dock and only one cable is required for everything (power, video, usb), one monitor daisy chains to the other. I hooked up an Gig ethernet USB adapter to the monitor for wired networking, that works well with full speed.

So total I have three screens now, the two 25 inch monitors daisy chained and also using the internal 4K screen of my laptop as well, without a problem. Overall I am happier with that solution than I was with the dock before.

Samsung note 20 running dex and as secondary screen.

Samsung Tab s7+ on verizon With keyboard cover

Dex Hub for dex and peripherals. (Key to my setup because of the display port instead of hdmi)

Speakers powered with a usb ran to my surge protectors.

Headset out of picture My wired Headset, I like it but if I wear it for a long time my ears get a little sweaty.

Samsung buds live My go to headphones paired with the Note and Tablet.

Monitor 2hdmi and 1 display port, usually I have the Nintendo Switch and Xbox hooked up and my Dex runs through the display port.

Keyboard All the keys work including the rgb controls, media control, etc which surprised me. Also it's very quiet.

Mouse Very standard nothing special, just has rgb.

Mouse Pad I got the xl one, but when I got home I realized it didn't fit my desk. The blue legs that raise up my monitor are in the way, so I used a razor and cut out "slots" for the legs. It's hidden and only I know so it looks great, but beware when getting a mouse pad that's xl it might not fit smaller desks.

For Charging Phone/Buds/Watch At the moment this is on a stand next to my desk, I just haven't moved over to the desk yet, but I love its fast charging capabilities.

Surge Protectors I have these because they have usb as well giving me 4 extra usbs, they are screwed into the bottom of my desk for average cable management.

I think that's everything, took a while to come together. Hopefully the links describe everything as well. Most of the things are overkill and designed with gaming pcs in mind but I like them for the rgb, aesthetics, and overall feel.

I chose that dex hub because of the display port specifically, when 8 have my xbox and switch or ps4 plugged into it there no room for dex with another hdmi.

I have the ps4 controller synced with the tablet at the moment for emulators or games that support it and the xbox controller is paired with my Note to use xbox gamepass on my monitor.

By using gamepass in dex I'm able to play multiplayer games with my girlfriend with one xbox, we game share and share gold so I basically have 2 xboxs for the price of one.
