Yes, just DP 1.4. It’s just a DP cable with a USB C connector at one end. I use this one with my laptop:

Looking for Thunderbolt 3 Ultrawide
Hi!
I am looking for a 34 1440p 100Hz + to connect to my 2018 Mac mini via TB3. Is there a consensus for the best choice these days? Is it still the good ol’ Samsung CJ791 or are there newer alternatives?
Alternatively, can I connect my Mac mini to a non TB3 34’’ with this cable and get the same results?

It should work with the proper cable. I’d recommend DisplayPort over HDMI. Something like this one from Cable Matters

this should work, idk if your laptop is thunderbolt 3 tho.

For some reason every cable on amazon is listed as "thunderbolt 3" when they're all just usbc display alt.
This should work for you.

That cable works for me directly plugged into the MBP. Then the other port is for a hub that has charging. OS animations feel like an iPad Pro. Coming from PC gaming, a high refresh rate monitor will ruin your eyes and every other display will look laggy.

Yeah, I read that you can upgrade the memory on the Mac Mini. I'm farily new to the Apple world, so it looked like (after reading the tech specs) that the 3 displays "should" work in terms of resolution (not certain though), and I was also unsure about the Thunderbolt 3 slots and how they connect to my monitors. I'm assuming there's an adapter that I'd need such as this one:

> do all USB-C to Displayport cables support 4k@60hz
Most likely *, but better to check the description of the product at least. Even better buy something rated for DisplayPort 1.4 (mentioning at least one of the following: 8K 60Hz, 4K 144Hz, HBR3, DisplayPort 1.4)
I would rather go with a new one so you could return it. They are not that expensive, usually? (at least in the US - example below 20$)
* 4K 60Hz requires 4 lanes HBR2 (provided by DisplayPort 1.2), unless some of the lanes are damaged / not present - cable with DP1.2 should work. (not necessarily true for dock or hub though! those may have only 2 lanes for video and 2 lanes for USB3)

great thank unfortunately I live in Germany and this one cant be delivered.. if I knew what feature I have to look for, I'd buy the equivalent, but even in your link it only says the hz rate for the 4k (60hz) and not the hz for lower resolution.. or will a 60 hz 4k cable always feature 144 hz for wqhd, as this has do with data transfer only and the one automatically means the other?

I've known it's been months since this post started but I figured I'd offer a solution that worked for me. I was having the same issue as everyone else where I would only be able to run the monitor at 3440x1440 @ 30hz. The cable I was using was this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01J6DT070/
I was able to run the monitor at 2560x1080 @ 60hz with this cable.
I bought a Caldigit TS3+ and plug in the cable above into the thunderbolt port on the dock and now I'm able to run the monitor at 3440x1440 @ 120Hz. For reference, I have a 2018 MacBook Pro 15"

Hello! I’m trying to help my girlfriend hook her laptop to a monitor, is this the cable you mentioned? https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-DisplayPort-USB-C-Supporting/dp/B01J6DT070 or is there another adapter on top of this that we need as well?

Buy the usbc to dp cable:
https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-DisplayPort-USB-C-Supporting/dp/B01J6DT070 It’s 8k60hz, so you should be good with higher res with this cable.

Most of those cables you find in Amazon are cheap pieces of shit. Even if they look nice, they all come from the same manufacturer and simply change the branding. Get your self something from Cable Matters. They're inexpensive, but not cheap. There's a difference.
1 points • ChiefAllDay
If I were to guess, it's your cable. I would order a USB-C to Displayport cable that's rated very high. Because you are sort of between 4k and 2k, it's sort of a pain to search for. What I found was a cable that can support 4k at 120Hz, linked here.

There are posts which do say people have it working at 120hz using the right cable: https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-DisplayPort-USB-C-Supporting/dp/B01J6DT070 shows up.
There is also an issue with the 120hz option which goes away on Big Sur when it worked with Catalina.

It could be a limitation of that GPU or a limitation of the MacBook or cables DP spec. I use my 2019 MacBook Pro 16” with my G9 and it works great.
I did once get horizontal lines (a sign of upscaling) after turning the monitor back on one morning, but unplugging the cable and plugging it back in fixed that right away.
For the record, this is the cable I use:

Yes! Precisely. That's what I'm doing at this very moment. I'm using a USB-C to DP cable (https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-DisplayPort-USB-C-Supporting/dp/B01J6DT070) from my A15 to my ASUS VG279QM, and getting 240Hz at 1080p, with G-Sync enabled! Easily the best setup I've ever had. =)
I imagine those USB-C docks w/ a DP port should work as well, but I don't know for sure, since I haven't tried one yet. As long as they support DisplayPort "Alt Mode" -- that's the technology that is allowing us to use DP over USB-C.
I also believe that you can use a USB-C to HDMI cable which will utilize the same Alt Mode, but like I said before, you probably won't get FreeSync in that case since the USB-C port is directly hardwired to the dGPU.
Also worth mentioning is that you could certainly do higher resolutions at the same if not lower refresh rates. So, according to the DP 1.4 spec, you should be able to do 8K@30, 4K@120, 1440P@240, etc.

What cable are you using to connect the mac to the display? HDMI or DisplayPort? I wasn’t able to the full Rez from the display until I switched cables.

I have a 2017 macbook pro connected to the G9 using a usbc to dp adapter. I'm able to run at full rez @ 60hz. Whether you can run full rez at 240 depends on your graphics card. It needs to support DSC and dp1.4. Mine does not so that's the best I'm getting. GL.

I was thinking more like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01J6DT070
It is just a pure DisplayPort signal from the laptop to the display. Especially working at higher resolutions, DisplayPort tends to be a generation ahead, most of the time. If your HDMI dongle only supports HDMI 1.4, your problem was likely related to that (the Mini supports HDMI 2.0b). Both the MacBook Pro and the Mini support DisplayPort 1.2 which is similar to HDMI 2.0b in bandwidth.
The idea with a cable like I linked was that it could eliminate dongle quality as a variable.

I did update the Dock firmware last week - I was very hopeful, but didn't notice a difference unfortunately.
I have now swapped out the cables and am using 2 of the same USB-C to DisplayPort. (This cable: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01J6DT070/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

To be totally honest, there is no scaling or tweaking or anything that you really should have to do. Should be plug and play, and you’ll get the same scaling that you see on a 5k iMac/ 1440p pre-2015 27” iMac, which is pretty standard and most people seem to like it just fine. I don’t know how you would go about scaling it on a 3rd party monitor. That ability is only available on a 5k iMac and possibly the 5k LG ultra fine through the OS.
The cable linked below will work at up to 165hz 1440p according to reviews on Amazon
However, idk what kind of monitor you have, but it’s possible there is some sort of driver update or firmware update or something that needs to be applied before it will work with your MacBook. As I said before, it really should just be plug and play. Having that many issues, but no problem in other OS/other computers leads me to conclude that maybe there is some compatibility issue with your Mac and the display.
What kind of display do you have? Have you tried looking online to see if anyone else with that model in particular has had issues running it off of a Mac?

I’ve been using my 2018 MacBook Pro 15” on the G9 using a USB-C to DP 1.4 cable from Cable Matters. I’m not sure if there’s any difference between the 15” and the 13” MacBook, but I can use the G9 at 120Hz on this cable. I’m on macOS Mojave Version 10.14.6 if that helps.

This is what I have. You can use a cable that's usb-c to displayport if you don't want an adapter: https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-DisplayPort-Thunderbolt-201036-BLK-1-8m/dp/B01J6DT070/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=usb-c+displayport&qid=1589921573&sr=8-3
The dock isn't a bad idea, I have one of those and it's great, but you already have one, so the adapter would be easy if you're just going to use one high-res monitor.

Ok, I bought this monitor couple of days ago. I have a "Lenovo Legion 7i" with RTX 2070 MaxQ.
At first, I connected the monitor through a USB-C Hub (DP to DP) = Unable to get G-sync.
Then I bought a USB-C to DP cable, connected to ThunderBolt 3 port = Got a notification from Nvidia software that a 'G-sync compatible display connected'.
Note: Legion 7i has 2 USB-C port. The one with TB3 was able to output to this monitor. I could not get any signal from non-TB3 USB-C port! Not sure why. The USB-C Hub was able to output from both port!

I have two 1440p monitors running 144hz each via usb-c to DisplayPort adapters.
One has power delivery pass through and the other is just a cord.
I manually installed the geforce drivers, not sure if that makes any difference.

Might be the cable, I had a similar problem a while back on my desktop. Cheap cables can cause the monitor to temporarily lose signal or sync with the video card.
Also avoid using adapters, always a straight cable without adapter is best:

In theory all USB C to DisplayPort cables and adapters are ought to support HBR3 / DP 1.3 / DP 1.4. In DP alt mode the USB C connector high speed lanes are just spitting out DisplayPort packets which these adapters / cables adopt at the other end to a DisplayPort connector shape but aside from the initial communication of setting up DP alt mode they are completely passive and are not doing a single thing with the signal and then much as any DP cable ought to work with HBR3 much as it did with HBR2, so it happens here.
In practice, some companies mark their adapters as DP 1.4 capable. Examples:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01J6DT070 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07F17ZHJY
Based on decades of very bitter experience with standards and "ought to" I'd stick with these for the simple reason of returns -- if it ought to but it actually does not then there is much less fuss if it was marked for DP 1.4. Of course, if you decide to actually buy from Amazon, they are not fussy anyways. https://i.imgur.com/OhNh10D.jpg fits computer standards like a glove.
The monitor's bandwidth requirements without HDR just fit the DP 1.3 budget and with HDR it utilizes DSC (a sort of compression) which needs GPU suppport but the 2xxx series have it. https://www.reddit.com/r/Monitors/comments/hsx0at/samsung_odyssey_g7_10bit_mode_not_available_for/

If your Mac Air has thunderbolt 3 ports and your Monitor has Full displayport input:
USB-c to Display Port will work
If your Mac has Thunderbolt 3 ports and your Monitor has HDMI input:
USB-c to HDMI will work.
If your Mac has MiniDisplay port out, you monitor has display port in:
If your MAC and Monitor is thunderbolt 3, then you simply need a thunderbolt 3 cable ($$$$Different than USB-c cable)
If you have Thunderbolt 3 on the MAC, you can also use one port for two monitors using something like this.

I have the 2019 19" MBP and the Acer X27P and trying to get this to work in Macos as it should or with the same control over this as we do in windows has been my favorite time waster these days.
Although technically the monitor can run at 4k 120Hz, the scaling settings on MacOS work won't let your monitor run 120hz on the default one for a 4k/5k monitor (reported as 5120 x 2880 (5K/UHD+ - Ultra High Definition Plus)) on anything over 60Hz.
Which is probably fine since a 5120 x 2880 @ 120hz would be out of range for my monitor. Unfortunately there's no setting to run it for at least 98Hz, which I'd still love to try.
The best MacOS can do with 4K 120hz monitor is a 2048 x 1152 @ 120hz which is reported as 4096x2304 by the system (UI looks like 2048 x 1152 @ 120hz) which personally is a bit too zoomed in for this (or any monitor) losing a large chunk of real state, but at least you can enjoy that buttery 120Hz.
Now into the bugs you will run into...

- The monitor will go to sleep after closing your laptop, no matter what energy and power settings you have. This issue was reported last year with no signs of being addressed yet: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/external-display-not-working-since-upgrading-to-10-15-2.2215286/ another link to macrumors reported this issue but I can't find it
- The monitor needs to be set to mirror the retina display from your laptop, otherwise it will also go to sleep.
These are the cables/adapters I've tried, the both work fine on windows 4k up to 144hz

Makes sense to figure out what are going to do with external monitor first. I don't know recent monitors too well, but r/Monitors could help with that part, also wiki https://www.reddit.com/r/Monitors/comments/609xaa/monitor_buying_guide_xpost/. Your laptop has two USB-C ports with DisplayPort 1.4 + HDMI 2.0.
T14 AMD by itself can support any monitor with DisplayPort 1.2 or 1.4 via USB-C (so you need to at least to get a simple dongle to connect DP->DP cable to it like https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-DisplayPort-Charging-Compatible/dp/B07FF63XZ9 + usual DisplayPort cable OR special USB-C -> DP cable https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-DisplayPort-USB-C-Supporting/dp/B01J6DT070 ). There is also HDMI 2.0 that doesn't need any dongles, just a compatible HDMI cable. to plug into your laptop and monitor.
If you want to connect more stuff to single USB-C connector - like not just monitor, but also charger or USB devices etc - docks are useful. 40AS seems like a safe bet for T14 as a more proper dock, but we need to know more about monitor you choose and other stuff to connect to find optimal option (Lenovo 40AS is not cheap - 150$, multitude of cheaper docks from Cable Matters, Anker, Startech etc.)

So I am trying on an LG 27GN950.
I've tried:
Startech DisplayPort to USB-C (https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-USB-DisplayPort-Cable-CDP2DPMM1MB/dp/B01E9RTEI8) which only gives me 60hz at any resolution. I use the same cable on my Dell S2719dgf and get 2560x1440p (monitor's max resolution) at 144hz. If I tell my LG it's a DP 1.4 cable, it gives me the option of HDR. If I tell the monitor it's 1.2, I lose the HDR option.
Curiously enough I just realized it's a DisplayPort 1.2 cable. I will order and try: https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-DisplayPort-USB-C-Supporting/dp/B01J6DT070/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=displayport+usb+c+1.4&qid=1603084003&s=electronics&sr=1-3
I also tried HDMI to USB-C (https://www.amazon.com/uni-Thunderbolt-Compatible-MacBook-Surface/dp/B075V5JK36/ref=sxts_sxwds-bia-wc-p13n1_0?cv_ct_cx=hdmi+usb-c&dchild=1&keywords=hdmi+usb-c&pd_rd_i=B075V5JK36&pd_rd_r=655478a2-e9e9-4e44-9cd6-c6d59c5865ef&pd_rd_w=XKb3r&pd_rd_wg=JqnQQ&pf_rd_p=aa27be45-7294-48a8-8c11-546cebd55a37&pf_rd_r=DCXYBKK2RC00TKJARZ70&psc=1&qid=1603084564&sr=1-1-a14f3e51-9e3d-4cb5-bc68-d89d95c82244). Once again, my Dell accepted this and output 144hz at 1440p. The LG does not.
I have a feeling the LG monitor might not support, natively, a higher refresh rate on macOS. It's odd the Dell has accepted multiple cables without issue, but the LG won't. Even lowering the resolution doesn't help or give the option of higher refresh rate.
HDMI Ultra HD Deep Color is never an available option for me, and turning off adaptive sync doesn't help either.
Will report back when I try the 1.4 DP to USB-C, but I have a feeling it won't work :(
