Get this. I've had a few adapters, but its the only one I could get that worked with both my Oculus Rift S and my high refresh rate monitors.

So the reason my hand is up in a weird position in all of these is because I had FPSVR running and thought I was capturing it to show my FPS. But I guess it doesn't capture the overlay. My bad.

I used this adapter: Cable Matters USB C to DisplayPort Adapter with 8K HDR DisplayPort 1.4 - USB Type C and Thunderbolt 3 Port Compatible with Oculus Rift S, MacBook Pro, Dell XPS, Surface Pro and More

I actually usually play VR on my desktop (7700k/980Ti) but one reason I bought the G14 was the possibility of playing VR on it. It's a lot easier to just bring the laptop to places (when it's safe again) than my desktop. There wasn't a whole lot of information on if it was possible (that is, is the USB-C DP connected to the AMD CPU or the Nvidia GPU?) so I asked around and got a semi-solid answer that it was connected to the GPU. However, no one could tell me "Yes, I have a Valve Index and yes, I can play it on my G14." So that's what I'm doing here in case anyone searches this up in the future.

Half Life Alyx: The game initially set it to medium settings, but I got a lot of jitters and high reprojecting ratio (13%). I set it to low and those jitters virtually all vanished (but not entirely). As I continued to play, the reprojecting ratio dropped to 9% over the next 30m of play.

I noticed that the game removes defeated enemies quickly, much quicker than when I played on desktop. I wonder if that's due to the 2060 having less VRAM than my 980Ti. Not that big of a deal. While the game looks amazing (Valve did a real good job to make sure this game runs well on a variety of setups), I did see some awkward shimmering in far away items (i.e. Russell's desktop) when I move far enough back.

Honestly, I'm pretty impressed at how well it handled the game. I don't get motion sick, so I can't really comment on that aspect. But I can see myself playing the entire game without issue. I did notice that when the Vortigaunt was doing his show (the last few of my screenshots), the fps absolutely tanked. Down to 50fps from an otherwise solid 90fps. Since it's not a gameplay moment, it's not a big deal. But it makes me wonder about some of the scenes in the last quarter of the game when there's a lot more happening.

Beat Saber: Only tried one song. But it was 90fps the entire way though. Not too surprising considering it's a very simple game, graphicswise. Shouldn't be a problem at all to run in the future.

Yes, my fans were loud. It's virtually impossible to hear when you're playing VR. But when I stopped a game, I could definitely hear it running.

Look for thunderbolt/usb c to DisplayPort 1.3 or 1.4. Sometimes they call out 8k 60hz, but the adapters aren’t frequency restricted it’s just an example of what they can support.

For example I get full performance out of this dongle: https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-DisplayPort-Aluminum-Compatible/dp/B07F17ZHJY

Nvidia GPU's only work with G-Sync PC monitors that have Displayport connections and your laptop has none, it has HDMI which wont work with G-Sync.

It has a Thunderbolt port which can deliver DP video over that connection but it may not be wired to the Nvidia GPU and only the Intel GPU. You could try purchasing a TB to DP adapter but it is a gamble that G-Sync will activate.

Over HDMI you will be limited to 1080p 144Hz no G-Sync on laptop.

PS4 is just a basic 1080p 60Hz device, doesn't matter too much.

Your card does have a Type-C connector and an adapter like this one should work.

I meant the USB type C ports, which seem to be Thunderbolt 3 ports according to spec' I found.

A TB3 port is supposed to be able to carry DisplayPort video signal directly without need of an external video card. Like this : https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07F17ZHJY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_btf_t1_P82KFb5HMMQCY (dunno if this one is any good, it's just an example)

You can plug in a USB-C dock and get proper native ethernet, video...

But new stuff like this seems rare to work perfectly with Linux. Hence my question :)

The laptop does not have a display port built-in but it does have a USB-C port with display output (and thunderbolt 3) capability. So you'll need to buy a USB-C to DisplayPort or Mini-DisplayPort adapter like this if you want to use the Rift S.

Confirmed working Rift s with a first gen lenovo thinkpad X1 Extreme (with 1050 ti max-q). I used this for thunderbolt to displayport. Just as a note, I have a \~100mV undervolt on the CPU and need to prop the laptop up so it doesn't thermally throttle too much. Games that I've tested that work are Robo recall, superhot, beat saber, google earth, and the lab (although the lab has frame dips sometimes). Subnautica was a laggy mess.

Don’t worry you are good. Just make sure you get a good adapter.

Sounds like an issue with your adapter or your USB-C port. Make sure the port supports DisplayPort 1.3 or above. Also, male sure the DisplayPort mode is wired to your GPU and not your integrated GPU. If that's all good, maybe try a different adapter. Here's the one I use with my ROG Zephyrus GU-502:

I think that does it. That is the correct adapter and I have already ordered a new adapter capable of 8k. Link. I was originally going to order this one however it won't come for around a month. All of the reviews are leading me to believe that this one will do the trick. It didn't even occur to me that adapters couldn't handle something like that. Thank you for the help.

So glad you did. It looks like this laptop will work after all!

From the Asus site:

> Alongside the USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C™ with DisplayPort™ 1.4 and Power Delivery, there’s a Type-A port for ultra-fast data transfers...

You should be able to use this adapter on Amazon US. People claim it works both with the Rift S and the Asus GX502, which us similar to the GU502 and Asus describes its USB port exactly the same as the GU502. It's only $18, and in stock.

Others would probably work too, maybe you can drop a few extra dollars and get one directly from a local electronics shop (doesn't seem like Best Buy has them on the shelf).

Apologies, a correction first... My Rift into my Legion 5 is a direct hdmi connection. But it works fantastic.

I have tried a Rift S (DisplayPort) through USB-C on another machine that worked great with the following adapter:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07F17ZHJY?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

On the Legion 5 I know that the USB-C (with DisplayPort) is connected directly to the gpu. As long as yours is the same, then you should be fine, but I haven't tried that specific setup to be able to tell you 100%.

Can you link the adapter? In any case, I would say it's almost certainly to blame, whether the seller misrepresented the adapter's compatibility with the Index or it's just defective. Slight rainbow static over an otherwise good picture is usually just an issue of "not enough bandwidth". I believe I've seen this particular adapter recommended for it.

Try stepping down the framerate to 90 first, though, or playing with the custom resolution. One thing that always worries me about "VR Ready" laptops is that a lot of them were designated that back during the reign of the Vive and Oculus CV1 when the norm was 2160x1200@90Hz instead of 2880x1600@144Hz. It's hard to say what they can handle exactly.

The Index is very picky when it comes to USB-C to DisplayPort adapters. You might want to try this one, as the comments explicitly mention the Index as working.

Your USB-C port also has to be wired up properly to your GPU. I guess it should be on your laptop but I‘m not sure about that.

The G14 performs great for VR when plugged into power. Just remember to download Steam VR too for steam games, otherwise the games will run on your laptop and not on your VR headset.

Also, only the left USB-C port works with DP.

Actually, I did a little looking & it seems there is an RTX USB-C to Displayport adapter. There's no guaranteeing it'll work for your Index, but even if it doesn't, you could just put one of the monitors on the adaptor and give the Index a native Displayport.

This is the only one I could find that specifically mentions supporting the RTX card's USB-C, so other adapters could be hit-or-miss.

Thanks.

I'm looking at the manual and it looks like you might have a Thunderbolt 3 connector (which looks like a USB Type C port but has a thunderbolt/lightning next to it.)

I can't seem to find anything about the DP version in the manual and it only mentions driving VGA, DVI, or HDMI displays.

I'm not completely sure if the thunderbolt is hooked up to the GPU.

You can try a Thunderbolt 3 Male to DP Female and hope it works.

EDIT: Check nVidia Control panel and see which ports are connected to your GPU

I had to go through a few Amazon USB-C to DP adapters to find one that was actually DP1.4 compatible for high refresh rate (I have a 5k, 5120x1400 @ 120hz panel). Despite amazon listings saying they were DP1.4 compatible the first two I bought were not. They would work for a minute then go black, then come back, then go black.

Got this Cable Matters one and it works flawlessly at 5120x1440 @ 120hz so you should have no problem on a 1080/1440p monitor at 144hz.

Personally I think I’d prefer 38” for the extra vertical room. I used to do everything on 16:10 monitors and it would probably make my brain happier tbh.

As for 50hz it’s really hard to say conclusively without trying it for a day or so. It does seem a bit less smooth compared to 120hz when I move a window around or drag my cursor, but it’s not very frequent I do this and it really is going depend on the individual.

One last note. I’m not sure which X1 you have but if it has a USB C or thunderbolt 3 with video out you could simply pick up a USB C to DisplayPort adapter and switch between PC and laptop by swapping to cable.

>With the index being one USB port and one display port I have no doubt it would've worked on that laptop as well with less issues.

Thanks for the tip. I looked into the alienware models and found them to be a bit overpriced for what one is getting. In short my local department store has the model I've given up there with windows 10 already installed for less than 2 grand and this model was only released end of last year so more or less, if I can get the index working on it, I should be good to go.

I fished around a bit more and found this: https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-DisplayPort-Aluminum-Compatible/dp/B07F17ZHJY?th=1

It's the amazon page for that adapter and there are at least two recent reviews that confirm they hooked up their valve index to a USB C port using it. This seems like a good enough indication to try it out this way.

Yes, both a USB-C to DisplayPort adapter or cable worked for me to get the full resolution on a 2018 15” Pro. Unfortunately the monitor’s build in USB hub does not work with Macs so I got a USB-C hub and hid it inside the cable compartment. Despite not having Thunderbolt or the USB compatibility I love this display for my Mac for productivity.

Here is the cable I’m using. This adapter worked as well.

Assuming that your monitors have Displayport inputs, you could use something like this for the 1st monitor. It would drive the monitor and feed power back into the laptop.

https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-Multiport-DisplayPort-Ethernet/dp/B06Y5N3YCD

Then use something like this to connect the 2nd monitor.

https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-DisplayPort-Aluminum-Compatible/dp/B07F17ZHJY

That's 2 cables to plug into the laptop, but much cheaper than messing around with TB3 docks or eGPU.

You might also want to buy a spare USB-C power adapter, so you can leave one plugged into the dock.

I also have a gaming laptop that I use for my Valve Index, which does not have a displayport on it, only mini-displayport and usb c. Here's what I bought and it works perfectly. From what I understand your usb c port has to be tied to your video card and not the motherboard for it to work, which VR ready video cards should have.

It should - via USB-C -> DisplayPort 1.4 dongle because Ryzen 4000 Thinkpads support DisplayPort 1.4 (example)

Combining with a proper USB-C dock might be more painful. Unless it assigns all 4 lanes to video and uses USB2 only for all other connections (see here)

Thought I'd drop this here. You CAN get native 5120x1440 on a laptop on the AOC Agon 49". It's amazing! Hopefully this helps someone get this setup working. Comments below:

Monitor is amazing. The tricky setup was with a laptop. My Macbook pro (AMD Radeon Pro 555 pro video card, 2017 model) would not natively display 5120 x 1440. It would not do full resolution over usb-c or HDMI (would only go to 3840 x2160). I read it might have something to do with the handshake over thunderbolt 3 in mac (if you boot to windows via boot camp, 5k would work, so it's not hardware). But w/ the right adapter, I can happily report it works!

I also had to manually change the display refresh rate. 5120x1440 at 75hz was what worked. I had to download DisableMonitor, a utility from github to do so. There are a few other software packages that let you change refresh manually in MacOS, but this one was free.

Two adapters that worked (amazon links):

1) Belkin Thunderbolt 3 Dock Plus w/ 2.6ft Thunderbolt 3 Cable (Thunderbolt Dock for macOS and Windows) Dual 4K 40Gbps Transfer Speeds, 60W Upstream Charging. $200 (little pricey, but great doc so far).

2) Cable Matters USB C to DisplayPort Adapter with 8K HDR DisplayPort 1.4 - USB Type C and Thunderbolt 3 Port. $18. And the Cable Matters 8K DisplayPort to DisplayPort Cable (DisplayPort 1.4 Cable) with 8K 60Hz Video Resolution and HDR Support - 6 Feet. $13. Way cheaper! I ended up sticking w/ the Belkin doc and DisplayPort cable.

Two cables that did NOT work:

1) Moshi USB C to DisplayPort Cable 1.5m/5ft, Support 5K@60 Hz, 4K HDR, VESA Certified, Aluminum Housing, Thunderbolt 3 Compatible.

2) Cable Matters USB C to DisplayPort Cable (USB-C to DisplayPort Cable, USB C to DP Cable) Supporting 8K 60Hz in Black 6 ft.

I ran the USB up port to my PC, then the usb-c to the doc (which is connected to the Mac). Works the other way around too (usb-c to PC, USB up to Mac)

Caveat: The kvm works but I have to switch between usb-c and usb up port manually in the monitor display (you have to switch the display port anyway so it's like two extra clicks, not an issue at all).

So I can use a single usb and mouse to control both! (plug both into back of monitor).

Also, I HIGHLY recommend the RK Royal KLUDGE RK71 keyboard. It has both wired and wireless mode (I just use the bluetooth to both pc and mac), can swap between pc and mac mode, and bluetooth up to 5 devices. You can just turn off the RGB if you don't like it. But it's an amazing keyboard!

Hope this helps someone! I struggled for a while and thought I'd share.

Hmmm... I wonder if the USB-C monitor is using DisplayPort over USB-C connector? Can you check? If so, then you can use this adapter \> this connector \> a standard DisplayPort cable > this other connector.

It's convoluted as fuck, but it'd be funny it worked.
