These cables are indeed directional. A DP to HDMI cable goes from a DP video source to a HDMI screen. The reverse also exists, a HDMI source to DP screen cable. Here's an example of one. Note how it takes power from an auxiliary USB connector.
Note that most of these adapters are very limited, they don't support 4K @ 60Hz or 1080 @ more than 60 Hz. A couple of more advanced ones exist though with 4K @ 60 Hz. Also, nothing can convert VRR from HDMI to DP, all adapters are limited to a fixed refresh rate.

Possible, but requires more expensive active adapters. Generally going to see resolution/framerate caps due to it too.

Apologies for being a pedant but the connectors on the monitors are INPUTS and the connectors on the graphics card are OUTPUTS. The signal is traveling from the graphics card to the monitor so you need a hdmi to display port adapter. These are less common than display port to hdmi but they do exist. https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-DisplayPort-Adapter-Resolution/dp/B00JQORLCG

It depends, I do it for one monitor but I had to buy an active adapter like this one.

Currently using this on one of my devices: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JQORLCG
Seems of good quality, and from my research, most such adaptors are in that price range.
If you end up biting the bullet, let me know if it works.

There’s a quick solution. I use a HDMI to Displayport adapter on my PS4 with a budget monitor. It works pretty well but I didn’t really look at if it could handle 4K

Your laptop has an HDMI out, correct? Make sure that you get the right kind of adapter. Unlike many other cables, HDMI-to-DisplayPort is not reversible. You want to be certain to get an Active adapter, like https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-DisplayPort-Adapter-Resolution/dp/B00JQORLCG/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1
You might want to do more research. That specific adapter advertises 2560x1440 at 60hz, while the Oculus Rift S is 2560x1440 at 80hz, which clearly requires more data to be transferred. I can't guarantee that this adapter will work as you expect. If your laptop has a USB-C you may want to investigate adapters for that. Again, do more research, not all USB-C supports video out at the performance that a VR headset demands.

You right, that's not as easy as it seemed. I despise displayport.

Someone else may know more but I do not think a regular active adapter will work. Active adapters are for when your computer has a Display Port which does not support Display Port ++ and you want to attach it to a monitor with HDMI. You are going the other way, from a computer with HDMI to a monitor with Display Port. I believe you need an adapter of of this variety instead and remember to also buy a Display Port cable unless you have one. Someone else with experience may expand.

For the display port adapter they only work one way, from displayport TO HDMI, and not the other way around. You would need an "active" one where it is powered via USB if you want to go that route. The following is an example:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00JQORLCG
As for routing via laptop/docking station, impossible.

Need the USB to plug into your Xbox for power. That’s when you know it’s good.

You can get an adapter to go from hdmi to display port.
I have no idea if it will work in your case specifically but might be worth a shot for $35.

Everything I've found is uni-directional. This one goes right way, but it costs a bit.

I'm not really sure what you're trying accomplish. But you'd much better off just using a adapter. See below link.
That card needs to go in the trash. I seriously don't think it is compatible (if it is a working card). It is at least 10 years old probably much more. Without a heatsink it would immediately crash if it did boot.

You'll need a converter or active cable like this one.
1 points • mistakenotmy
A DP to HDMI cable will not work. Those cables are directional. The source (laptop) would need to have the DP port. This is because DP was built with Dual Mode. Dual Mode allows a DP port to output HDMI. It is in effect its own converter. That does mean those cables won't work in reverse, like you need.
You need a HDMI to DP converter. That is an active conversion and a bit more expensive. Something like: https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-DisplayPort-Adapter-Resolution/dp/B00JQORLCG

Two things:
1) Most adapters/converters are not bidirectional. If they say "DP to HDMI", they can't do "HDMI to DP".
2) Active converters require additional power (often USB) to convert the HDMI signal into the DP signal at higher frequencies (Hz). Carefully read a converter's features to make sure it can convert higher frequencies at the resolution you want. For example, this adapter, even though it's "active" only supports 1080p @ 60Hz, and 1440p @ 60Hz.

Ohhhh! Just to confirm: Your monitor uses DisplayPort and that’s why you need the adapter?
If so, then if you get the one I was talking about that’s specifically an HDMI to DisplayPort converter then it’ll work
An example of what you would need is this. You would also need a DisplayPort cable along with this adapter to plug it into the monitor. Unfortunately HDMI to DisplayPort adapters are kind of pricy
1 points • johndots
I don’t think they work both ways. You probably have a male to female lead. But I think you need the opposite. Might be wrong.

Maybe the monitor only accepts a 4k input through DisplayPort, rather than HDMI.
Try to buy a HDMI to displayport adapter (don't get confused with DP to HDMIs adapters or cables which only work FROM DP TO HDMI. It has to be from HDMI to DisplayPort. These adapters are usually one-way, so don't get them mixed up)
This one should work: https://www.amazon.com/-/es/Cable-Matters-Adaptador-DisplayPort-resoluci%C3%B3n/dp/B00JQORLCG You'll need a DP to DP cable, too. Get any DP 1.4 cable.
If that ends up not being the issue, just return it.

LG UltraGear 27GN850 is a 27 inch monitor can push the resolution of 2560x1440 u/144 hz, To take advantage of it, you may want a DisplayPort KVM switch with dual DP video outputs (there is almost no for just one DP and one HDMI video KVM switch).
Monitor side connection:
- KVM to LG , DP 1.4 VESA Certified Male/Male, for connecting between the KVM switch DP# 1 video output to LG 27GN850.
- KVM to HP Display, HDMI, add an active converter like this and a HDMI to HDMI cable to the monitor.
System side connection:
- Gaming PC to KVM . directly connect from GPU DP outputs to KVM switch DP video input. + USB 3.0 A-B cable.
- HP Zbook , one DP-to-DP cabe and one active HDMI-to-DP converter to convert the HDMI output- HDMI plug in to the HDMI video out put of the laptop.
one Type-C to DP cable from type-C port on HP Laptop to DP in on KVM switch.
+ one USB 3.0 A-B cable.
KVM switch: UDP2-12AP from ConnectPRO.
These configurations had been tested and proofed as a working setup.

So mini display port to regular display port works, but mini display port to HDMI doesn't work.
What I did was to buy a mini display port to display port. The. I bought a display port to HDMI. Apparently it doesn't work because it needs power, so when you buy the display port to HDMI, make sure it has a USB cable attached.
Hers a link to what I bought: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JQORLCG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Hopefully this made sense

it would have to be something like this https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-DisplayPort-Adapter-Resolution/dp/B00JQORLCG/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=hdmi+out+to+displayport+in&qid=1608582562&sr=8-3 hdmi out to display port in. but none of the ones I see support 1080p 144hz.
1 points • Pun_In_Ten_Did
> I purchased a DP to HDMI lead
Why? You need an HDMI to DP adapter. That will convert the HDMI signal from your GPU into a DP signal for your monitor.
1 points • reddit_xq
So just something to know - my computer has HDMI 2.0, but my monitor only has HDMI 1.4, and through the HDMI cable I can only get 1080p@60hz. I don't know if there are any adapters out there that could get it up to 1080p@144hz going into the displayport on my monitor, but this one for example would also be capped @ 60hz:
https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-DisplayPort-Adapter-Resolution/dp/B00JQORLCG
So I use my TB3 port instead, but then that leaves me with fewer options if I wanted to go dual monitor. If I did dual monitor with two of my current monitors, I think I'd have to accept 60hz on one of them.

I don't know all the technical details but the cable/adapters you bought are the wrong way. You can go from Display to HDMI no problem but to go from HDMI to Display you need a slightly different adapter that also has a power adapter because the Display "conversion" as it were requires power in order to work. I believe this is what you're looking for: https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-DisplayPort-Adapter-Resolution/dp/B00JQORLCG
