I'm using this for my setup, works great. Only using a 10 foot extension though, not sure how it would do with 20+ feet

What do you think of it? Happy with the picture quality?

I had to get a display port booster to use with the extension cable on my Valve index. This is the one that I got:

Hey man, just wanted to let you know I tested the cables and that coupler did not work with any configuration or set of cables. I'm returning them and have bought this:

Yep! I believe 3m is the maximum specification for display port.

You can also use something like a repeater:

I can verify this works for my VR headset

I got a displayport repeater: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07D949F59/

i used two 6m cables plugged into the powered repeater and am having no issues. highly recommend.

The biggest issue you'll run into might be with the limits on display ports range. I believe DP is specced to a max length of 3 meters, some devices can push passed that but my laptop sure can't. I had to use an active DP repeater to allow me to use a 5 meter extension. From my laptop it goes from a MiniDP to full size DP dongle, 1 meter male to male DP cable, the active repeater, a male to female extension, then the Rift S plugs into that. I also have a matching USB 3 extension but it just works.

This is the one I have and it works a treat. My biggest complaint is the usb port for power is on the side which is annoying for a mobile extension but if you plan on mounting it somewhere that would be fine. You could even ditch the long extension. Have a cable from your PC to the repeater then just mount the repeater somewhere and just plug the headset right into that.

You’d probably need a DisplayPort repeater to get it to extend that far. Display port cables only have a max of 3-5 meters for the signal starts to degrade and after that it needs something to boost it. So with a repeater it’d probably work, but whenever you start adding repeaters and cables to a already somewhat finicky setup like VR, that just means even more possible points of failure.

Edit: something like this - https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-102039-DisplayPort-Repeater/dp/B07D949F59

Best US to Australia Forwarding services?

I'm looking to buy something of Amazon US that doesnt ship to Australia and I'm in need of it asap. I've looked around but see so many mixed opinions. One I'm not too keen on is ShopMate, heard terrible things about them.

Any Recommendations?

Get some signal repeaters, i use ones for both USB and Displayport and they work fine. Make sure they're powered though, otherwise the signal will drop out.

I actually have my Rift S running on 10m extensions! It’s not cheap though, as you need active cables for both display port and USB3. Here are links to the gear that I use:

USB: https://www.amazon.de/dp/B01FQ88CHS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_oHmgFbFA7GTMN

DisplayPort Cable: https://www.amazon.de/dp/B07S7Z7SR5/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_CImgFb2C9HBSY

DisplayPort Repeater: https://www.amazon.com/-/de/Cable-Matters-102039-DisplayPort-Repeater/dp/B07D949F59/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=cable+matters+displayport+repeater&qid=1595459971&sr=8-3

There are many similar DisplayPort cables under different brand names. I’m pretty sure all those that look the same actually are the same and will all work fine. As for the USB3, the UGREEN works very well, and I have read other cables may have some problems.

Also, for this setup to work you need the CableMatters DisplayPort repeater. Other repeaters are for an older DisplayPort Standard and won’t work, and passive female-female plugs won’t work either.

Also, the USB cables das well as the repeater both need to be powered using MicroUSB.

I’ve been using this exact setup, extending my VR setup from my PC in my bedroom down the hallway to my living room, for the last 8 months, and it is working great!

Rift s Displayport repeater/ active usb 3

Hello,

Just wanted to preface by saying im pretty green to the vr world and recently got a rift s but find the cords a little too short. I looked online and a few people are saying that a standard displayport and usb 3.0 extension cord will cut out every once in a while due to there not being enough power supplied from the gpu to go the distance and to go with a repeater and active usb cords.

I found these on amazon and was wondering if anybody had any pros or cons to them, they seem good and are not expensive.

Speaking from personal experience, I’ve had success with the following combination of cable + active signal repeater + USB 3.0 extension.

Club3D CAC-1061 DisplayPort to... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07HCZCVF8?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

Q Cable Matters DisplayPort... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07D949F59?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

Plugable 10 Meter (32 Foot) USB... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076C6PDNH?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

I’m not an expert on this topic and have wasted some money on unnecessary cables to extend my setup. But the above 3 pieces have worked for me. Keeping in mind that you also need to plug in the power of the USB 3.0 extension, as well as the active signal repeater. So there’s even more extra to plug in.

Good luck!

So I ended up buying some other stuff to hopefully fix this issue.
First, Cable Matters DisplayPort Repeater hopefully this fixes the display port issue. USB 3.0 Extension got this just in case the repeater starts working and I start having problems with my USB so I ordered a backup just in case. Cable Matters Unidirectional Active DisplayPort Cable this is the exact length I need and if the repeater fixes my issue then I will downgrade to this cable as its $45 compared to the $95 cable that just came in.

My laptop also has only a mini displayport. I got this DP to mini DP adapter and it worked fine. Other folks had better luck with this one.

Then I decided I wanted an extra 10 feet of cable length so I got this other adapter and this DP to mini DP cable and it works flawlessly.

EDIT:As far as checking to see which ports are connected to your 1070, try opening the NVIDIA Control Panel, Under "3D Settings" click "Configure Surround, PhysX and you should see graphic that shows your ports and what they are connected to. Like this.

I have a boom stand that I fully extend and route the cable up, across and down. The room is multi-purpose, and I because of our lease agreement I can't make any permanent modifications to the room.

I also add some extra slack so I can attach the cable to my belt. When I kneel, go prone, or get to the edge of my play space, I feel more a general resistance instead of a tug on the back of the headset.

I had the same problem with my setup. Here is the only way I could get it work consistently with 144hz.

Copper display port cable -> display port booster -> fiber optic display port -> active coupler -> index.

I tried 3 different brands of optical cables, none of which worked. My only theory is that my particular gpu is not outputting a enough power to get the active cable to work by itself.

With this setup it has been working great. No snowflakes, sparkles or disconnects. I lost track the amount of combinations and hours I spent to get this to work :(

Here is what I used:

Copper cable: I can't seem to find where I got this (It's several years old). But it is a heavy duty 10ft dp copper cable.

Booster: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01IE3IAIS

Fiber cable: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07QQQFWGT/

Active coupler: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07D949F59/

Also, occasionally after a fresh boot into steam vr, I will just get a grey screen. I found that toggling hz and/or resolution a few times in steam vr will kick the signal into gear.

Another thing that I can't determine if it has helped or not is using MSI Afterburner and jump the voltage and power output to the max allowed. I don't know if this helps with the above setup. But it did help with some of the other cables, couplers, etc., however none of these worked consistently

Yes, it works! I just received my Index yesterday and set it up in a different room from my PC using a 30-foot fiber optic DisplayPort cable, active DisplayPort repeater and a USB 3 extension cable. It's pricy; the setup is going to run you $150-$200\~. Here's what I used:

DisplayPort cable (looks like they have cables up to 60-foot): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07QQQFWGT/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_ywDMEbZ57ZYDV

DisplayPort repeater: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07D949F59/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_qyDMEb0M85AND

USB 3 extension cable: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DMFFL2W/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_7yDMEbSMRKGXV

I didn't run any extension for the AC power, I just plugged it in in the room where I'm running the Index. Also, I didn't need to add a power adapter for the USB 3 extension cable, it just worked. No issues as far as I can tell, even running 120Hz and 144Hz. Others have had success with similar setups. The key seems to be the fiber optic DisplayPort cable. They're expensive, but standard DisplayPort cables don't seem to be capable of that kind of length.

If you do this, you have to pay attention to which end of the fiber optic DisplayPort cable goes into your video card and which goes into the repeater. The fiber optic cables can only be plugged in one way (you'll notice the cable I linked has "source" printed on one of the connectors).

https://www.amazon.com/Club3D-CAC-1115-DisplayPort-Cable-Black/dp/B06XSYZNMT/

Your best bet there is probably to use this signal booster as a coupler. Some people have reported good results with this signal booster with a 5k plus. Can't remember if anyone got it working as an 8KX yet. I'm planning on trying something similar myself but I don't have the headset yet as it is stuck in customs. Anyway here is the repeater. If I remember correctly, one person on the forum said it worked well with an index, but another said that it didn't work with their 8KX.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07D949F59/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Basically the bottom line is that the longer the extension, the less chance of it working with super high res signals even if it is rated for them. You can check this thread where there is discussion of what people have tried so far, but there are a lot of variables when you factor in all the cables, GPUs, etc. You might end up with no picture, a snowy picture, or a perfect result.

For my Index, I use the following:

DP extension cable: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07RJ13CH9

USB 3.0 extension cable: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00P0ES0YE

For whatever the USB-C requirement is, I'll either use an adaptor into that USB 3.0 cable above or maybe use the Oculus Quest Link cable somehow. I'm not too concerned with it as in a worse case scenario, I'll just plug it directly into my mb's back panel USB-C port or into my case's USB-C port then get whatever adaptors I need later.

When I replied to a thread about DP cables (in r/ValveIndex ), a dude claimed that my cable was almost as good as with a repeater, cept that he saw white sparkles in dark areas. I have never seen these dots before but I tried using the same app and in-game location that he described (Valve Aperture hand Lab) and still never saw the sparkles. That said, I'll try to dig up that old thread and edit/link the cable he recommended.

EDIT: here are the repeaters/cables he tested and recommended. Again, I have not purchased these as the cables I linked to above work fine for me.
Repeater: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07D949F59
plus this cable: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0767F5DNR
and this USB 3.0: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B016YS8RT2
(I assume find a USB-C 3.0 that matches the specs of the cable above)

Hope this helps!
