Meh, the 4TB alone is $90. Can get another 1TB SSD for $90 on Amazon. And the Blue SSD is $116.

https://www.amazon.com/Blue-NAND-1TB-SSD-WDS100T2B0A/dp/B073SBQMCX/ref=sr_1_2?crid=32H11EDK38PMG&dchild=1&keywords=wd+blue+1tb&qid=1594680026&s=electronics&sprefix=WD+blue+1%2Celectronics%2C145&sr=1-2

So, you're...spending $3 more on the bundle....

Yeah, if it's running on a mechanical drive an SSD would probably help a lot. They're pretty affordable now too, you can get a good quality 1 TB SSD on Amazon for $100 (assuming that one has the right connector for your computer)

Me personally, I see value in SSDs in CECHA ps3s. While this definitely is a more expensive option, it results in faster access times (and in a lot of cases faster load times for games stored on the drive) as well as less heat, power consumption, noise etc

Anything that helps with heat on a CECHA model is gonna be your best friend! Here’s the one I have for mine that I recommend

Your hard drive is likely BORKED. You will likely need a new hard drive and a reinstall of Windows.

But you should try a repair install of Windows first. If that fails for whatever reason then you should plan on acquiring a new hard drive.

A SATA SSD will be a bit more expensive than a mechanical hard drive, but it will be far more reliable, and faster to boot.

I've been recommending SSD's for almost a decade now, there's no reason to game on normal HDD's anymore, they're very bad for newer games, especially mmo's with how much loading there is.

You can get cheap SSD's that will speed up loading tenfold.

A 1tb is what 100 bucks?

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073SBQMCX/ref=twister_B08GGYK29P?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

I posted a video the other day when somebody told me Dalaran loading was slow, well I keep wow on my old 240GB SSD from 4 years ago, and you can see the speed for yourself.

https://youtu.be/0rByUmfpFes

Normal zones are even faster.

Your comparison shows this SSD which you certainly don’t want.

What you bought is a SATA drive, so your read/write speeds will be slower than nvme.

Yes. You can easily mount an extra ssd in the hard drive bay you will see in the bottom right when you open up the housing. You will have to simply pull out one of the racks from there, screw your drive into place, connect your power cable, connect your sata cable, and put the rack back in. I would recommend going to Newegg or Amazon online and searching for a 2.5" SSD. I personally prefer Samsung or Western Digital brands like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073SBQMCX/ref=cm_sw_r_apa_i_3jaKEbR2AJCEB

I like Chrome for some of the add-ons (like Chrome Remote Desktop), but Firefox is my browser of choice. I have Chrome installed, and I recently installed the new Chromium version of Edge.

Your best bet for resources is probably going to either be Edge, because Microsoft made it to work well with Windows (either OG Edge or Chromium Edge, but the latter will replace the former in a future update you can install any time), or Firefox. Google Chrome is known to be resource hungry, and of course there's the whole spyware/adware thing. It doesn't explicitly have those things, but Google itself is very dirty when it comes to tracking you and your personal information, so that may or may not be a consideration for you. It is for me, though not as much as it is for others. I still use some Google services, but I've diversified with Microsoft, Apple, and other vendors so nobody has the complete picture.

Getting a better PC or upgrading the one you have is a great way to get more performance out of the browser you already like. Chrome specifically eats a lot of RAM. Adding RAM is not hard, but you may not be able to access the RAM slots, or you may not have any RAM slots open. So, you would need to find out what you have and what you can do. If your slots are full, you would need to replace one. (While it's recommended that they be paired, it isn't strictly required.)

Another great upgrade that is easier to do is, install an SSD. An SSD is a hard drive that uses no moving parts. As such, it generates less heat, and uses less power than a traditional hard drive. And it's smaller, so air flows more freely through your case. Oh, and it's way faster! I can turn my computer off for an hour, then hit the power button, and be on Reddit well inside 10 seconds. That includes the time it takes to choose my username (wife's is selected by default, alphabetically it comes first) and enter my password. So yes, very fast. What you will need to do is back up the files on your C drive, then turn off the computer. Open it up, and connect the SSD to a SATA data and power connector (the ones your hard drive are using are fine). Boot it up and install Windows 10 on the SSD. A fresh installation will also make your computer run better. (If replacing the hard drive, the first thing I'd do is boot to the Windows 10 installer, and wipe the hard drive, delete all partitions, and then turn it off and install the SSD.) SSDs used to be expensive (I paid $300+ for my 1TB model), but Amazon has it for $118 (no referral link). 500GB is only $65 if that's all you need.

There's the 1TB WD Blue mentioned in this thread posted earlier

https://www.amazon.com/Blue-NAND-1TB-SSD-WDS100T2B0A/dp/B073SBQMCX/

...which discounted down 26% to $118 is 18% more than this SanDisk Plus (a lot) but only $18 more (not a lot), depending on how you look at it.

It would be a great deal at 10% off, for first time buyers, or 15% off, for students, for a total of somewhere around $98 to $103 at WD's website, but it's out of stock.

Newcomers to SSD should consider competing NVMe M.2 drives if their motherboards support such. (Always worth mentioning; there are always such people)

I have a similar setup that's been working well, so I can provide you with some data! I haven't done any real stress-testing, but the RPi 4 can empirically handle at least 3-4 1080p streams (direct play) at a time with no hiccups. Video transcoding is not really feasible. Not sure about audio.

Hardware:

  • RPi 4, 4Gb
  • 1TB WD Blue SSD. This is connected w/ a cheap SATA -> USB 3.0 enclosure. The RPi 4 can handle it without an external power source, which is great (I had trouble corroborating this online before doing it myself).

Software:

  • OS is Ubuntu Server running from the RPi's SD card
  • Running under Docker:
  • Bespoke Wireguard client container (VPN). I spun this up myself because I found other solutions were complicated and didn't provide the features I needed (killswitch, configurable local port access).
  • QBittorent container. I attach this to the Wireguard container and torrent through VPN. Everything else is networked regularly.
  • Jackett container
  • Sonarr container
  • Radarr container
  • Plex container
  • I also use some rclone / unionfs-fuse magic to enable cloud storage for the bulk of my media. Most of my streams are actually pulled and decrypted from Google Drive in real-time (Google Drive -> RPi4 -> Plex client). I think that's even more telling of the RPi's capabilities here.

All metadata (including Plex) is stored on the SSD. It seems fast enough, but I'm not sure what kind of performance hit you'd take using an SD card.

The most CPU-intensive activities seem to be:

  • Torrenting through the VPN. I imagine this is because everything needs to be decrypted as it arrives. Even so, I can still stream with many ongoing downloads.
  • Plex/Sonarr/Radarr scanning the library. This doesn't seem to have a real impact—these things only happen periodically, and it hasn't been an issue yet.

I haven't noticed any memory problems, even with the 4Gb model.

>QLC is "quad layer cell," TLC is "triple layer cell". qlc allows for more dense storage and by extension cheaper prices, while tlc is faster and takes longer to wear out, so at the same price, any tlc ssd is going to be better.

I see, so I should be looking for tlc's when buying a SSD.

also the item you linked doesn't ship to my country however this one does, I'll be paying an extra 50$ tho :/

No worries, the fun part about building your pc is learning everything in the process. And sorry, I meant SSD, not SDD.

SSD = Solid State Drive HDD = Hard Disk Drive

These drives are your storage to store everything on your pc from pictures to programs. SSD is the more advanced and quicker storage than the HDD. The SSD also came out with a newer and quicker interface than the SATA interface that I’m going to show you. It’s up to you if you want the newer technology.

Here are my SSD/HDD recommendation for your budget:

1tb ssd

4tb HDD

Both are standard models and cheap.

I haven't even gotten to NVMe SSD which are much faster and don't cost much more. SSDs also go up to around 2tb if your looking for something on the affordable side if not well they go much higher and so do HDDs

The future is now old man.

It looks like you have a 2.5 inch HDD, an M.2 SATA III SSD, and only one SODIMM slot. So, in this case, I would leave the M.2 SSD as is. It's fine, and you can use it as a boot drive.

Pull out that 4 GB SODIMM, it's barely enough to run windows let alone do any work. I would recommend replacing it with a 16 GB equivalent like this: https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-Single-PC4-21300-SODIMM-260-Pin/dp/B071KP8CGJ/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=16gb+sodimm&qid=1591215629&sr=8-1

Pull out the HDD. Since it's 2.5 inch SATA, that's a common SSD form factor, so I would recommend putting in another SSD, preferably at least 1 TB, for more storage. I'm currently typing this on a laptop with this exact model of SSD in it, and it's served me well for a year and a half now: https://www.amazon.com/Blue-NAND-1TB-SSD-WDS100T2B0A/dp/B073SBQMCX/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=wd+blue+3d+nand+1tb&qid=1591215833&sr=8-1

Leave the M.2 128 GB SSD and keep windows on that. Then, you can put your files on the new SSD for maximum speed.

These two upgrades should improve speed and usability greatly, and not having a hard disk may actually save on battery as well.

r/buildapc • comment
1 points • hydroboii

The product which you've attached on your post is a M.2 form factor SSD which won't work with your motherboard. You need to go for a 2.5" SSD something like this 2.5" Form Factor SSD.

But before buying, it's imperative that you check if your motherboard has a sata port available, they look like this SATA Port on Motherboard (Color of plastic outer could vary) .

Get back to me once you've checked your motherboard for the Sata Port.

I myself went for the WD, but pretty much any SSD from any decent reputable brand should be fine (i.e. WD, Samsung, Kingston, ADATA, Seagate, Verbatim, etc). Just make sure they're 2.5" and have a SATA III interface. There's no good cheap SSD, tho:

You're in a bit of an awkward situation, in that it may be more economical to upgrade your entire rig in the long run, but you are limited in cash in the short run. It may not be worth upgrading DDR3 RAM right now when in most cases DDR4 is around the same price per GB. But in order to upgrade to DDR4, you would need to upgrade your motherboard and CPU.

Assuming you can fit it into your budget, a new GPU is going to give you the most performance for your money right now, and should be compatible with what you already have. Ultimately what I would recommend is adding an additional SSD and upgrading your GPU, and then start saving for that CPU/RAM/MOBO upgrade or new pc later on, assuming you do want to build a new pc in 1-2 years. You could easily swap said new GPU and SSD into a new rig too. You could also overclock your 4690k in the meantime to breath some new life into into your pc.

For storage, you could add a 1tb SSD for a little north of 100 euros, or save some money and go with 500gb. I would very highly recommend going with an SSD over an HDD, unless you absolutely need that extra storage and are absolutely cash strapped. The difference in performance is huge, and you can always add more storage later on as you need it. A 2.5" sata SSD should work with what you already have, but based off a quick lookup of your motherboard, it does not have support for m.2 SSDs. But the performance difference may be marginal between the two for you.

I'm not sure of the availability in your country, but here are some examples of an SSD and GPU you could use:
Western Digital 1TB SATA SSD
EVGA 1660 Super
XFX RX 580
