PSA: The Basstop dock replacement shell can damage the USB-C port on your console
Hey everybody I just wanted to make an announcement here because I'm dealing with this on my own end. About a year ago I replaced the shell on my switch with a BASSTOP shell. (Link) If you don't know what this is, it essentially allows you to take the PCB board out of a switch dock and place it into a much more compact and portable shell. That means that unlike third party switch dock, you are using the original circuitry and in theory shouldn't cause damage.
Well like I said I've used it for about a year now and at this point my switch no longer docks with anything besides the BASS TOP, meaning it has somehow damaged the USB-C port due to the angle it rests at. I knew it didn't work for my girlfriend's dock, but I just spent the two hours rebuilding my dock into its original housing, and my switch won't work in that either. So that means the issue is with the switch I have, and it only wants to work with the BASSTOP. Buyer-beware, I would not recommend using that shell, or if you do I recommend changing it back to the original hardware before you damage your switch.

The dock is easy, took less than. 10 minutes. It's the joycons that are a major pain

Convert your old switch dock for a more portable dock with this conversion set for taking it with you to friends an buy a new switch. And a second charger next to your bed is always nice.

What I would do is get a BASSTOP Portable Dock Replacement Case and do a shell replacement on my original dock.

There is always a risk when using third party docks, any firmware update from Nintendo could cause the dock to brick your switch. Not saying it is likely, but it is a possibility. And there is history of third party docks bricking switches.
Your safest bet is using something like this. It is a shell that you put the hardware from your dock into. Obviously this means having to take apart your OG dock (and no longer being able to use it), but it is a relatively easy process, and there are videos on YouTube. Not sure if it will fit with your grip though.
Also, if you don’t want to get rid of your OG dock, you could buy a refurbished one through Nintendo and use the hardware from that one instead. Then you’d have your one at home that always stays there, and a smaller more portable one to take on the road.

Buy the $14 shell on amazon and mod your dock yourself. The mod is simple and makes traveling with the dock so much easier. Took me 10 minutes tops and there are instructional videos online as well.

It appears to be the Basstop dock shell replacement. You open up your official dock and put the insides into this thing. I have one as well (but in red) and I would highly recommend it! Not too difficult of a procedure and it comes with the screwdriver that you'll need.

for any one who has used this would it fit the switch with the Satisfye switch grip still on it?

You can buy a casing to make your current official dock much smaller. This won't cause any issues whatsoever.

There isnt a whole lot of options for dock shells. Most people opt for using these tiny replacement shell kits, rather then trying to customize the dock.
But there are lots of skins and decals that could be applied to the normal dock.
The system itself has a TON of options for all of those, so I would look for specific colors or designs as shells, skins, or protective cases might cover one or more of your preferred colors/designs.

I use this one, it's so simple, cheap (cost-wise) and small.

It's still inconvenient to pack. The idea is business travelers are readily willing to spend for portable amenities and this is a really easy one.
I ended up buying this + a regular dock and moving over the circuit board myself.
https://www.amazon.com/BASSTOP-Portable-Replacement-Nintendo-Original/dp/B071YVC3NJ/ref=sr_1_18
It's just unnecessary work. They could've charged me $30 more than the regular dock, and I probably would've paid it.

I was mixing 2 completely different products in my head lol. I'm sorry. I do back Skull N CO 100% as anything I have ordered from them has been top quality and worth the $. However looking at their website I see that I was looking at this dock. Now the one that requires you to use the Nintendo official components is the one on Amazon listed here
EDIT: Had to adjust the links.
Either way just a heads up if you do decide to order from Skull n co. They're super backed up from Covid-19. I ordered my wife a grip case for her Switch lite and have literally been waiting close to a month. I have a tracking # and can see the package has just been sitting in CA for a while now so I don't know if its out of there hands

Its crazy easy - you can buy the dock frame - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B071YVC3NJ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
And then you take apart your switch dock, its all one piece - fits perfectly in the new frame.

Hard to tell what you mean but I'd say as long as the usb c connector still works you should just get a case/ housing replacement like this:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071YVC3NJ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_gD8aFb8KJ0MW5
It's pretty easy to do. Just take it out of one dock and stick it into another. Job's done.

If you travel with your switch a lot I highly recommend converting your dock to a smaller case like this. It takes less than 10 minutes and is low risk compared to the 3rd party docks that have bricked people consoles since it uses the original internals. It makes the dock small enough that I don't even think about bringing it along anymore.

I suggest the Basstop shell: https://www.amazon.com/BASSTOP-Portable-Replacement-Nintendo-Original/dp/B071YVC3NJ/
Been using it for a couple years now with no issues.

I got a new switch dock shell replacement: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071YVC3NJ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_lz7fFbM6TGMXY
Im looking for a carrying case that can fit: the switch with joycons on, a pair of joycons, oem charger and oem hdmi cable.
Any recommendations?

I use this
Just add taller rubber feet to the bottom of it and it will sit in there with your satisfye grip.

If what the other person doesn't says doesn't work, I moved the housing to this. Power cycling, turning it off an on 100 times. Nothing worked until I tried this.

Granted I had to put it together myself, but the because it doesn't exactly cover the bottom I can just drop the switch in and be done with it.

The Insignia dock from Best Buy and the Skull N Co Jumpgate are both reliable, third party options. You could also buy a kit on amazon to reshell your existing dock to make it much more portable. I reshelled my extra dock and it took about 20 minutes to put it in this. It's been working great for me for a month now.
If you need third party chargers for your reshelled dock or third party dock, make sure to get a quality USB C PD charger that supports the 39W power profile like the original charger.

It’s important to be aware of what exactly compatible means in regards to the switch. Most usb-c hubs will function with the switch including transmitting signal to your tv. The issue is with the power transmitted to your switch. The switch has some specific power consumption requirements that do not comply with usb-c standards. In fact the switch power demand fall between 2 bands of the usb-c spec. Essentially the switch asks for more power than low power devices and so it ends up be provided too much power.
When your playing a game this can be ok since this is when the switch is consuming the most power. It may have an impact on longevity of the system however so this is not ideal for your primary dock, but for travel it’s probably fine.
However, the best option is to use they Nintendo dock hardware that came with the system. Sadly that dock is way to bulky. I highly recommend buying this case you will need to take your dock apart, which is really easy and put it in the new case. When I bought mine it came with all the tools.

Yes or No - do you have the satisfye grip(V2) and do you have a dock mod(only looking for mods because I'm not going to use an unofficial dock) that you use with the grip still attached?
I've found a couple of posts but none definitively say yes or no. I can use a dock extender which is an option but for now, just looking for a dock mod, maybe basstop or linkstyle??

There is no safe portable sized dock available.
However you can take a regular dock and put the pieces into a portable sized shell and that works perfectly well since it's still all official Nintendo parts doing the work.
You can get a refurbished dock from Nintendo for $40 to take the guts out of. That's the dock only, does not include power cable.

Tomtoc makes a case that is what you describe:https://www.amazon.com/Compatible-tomtoc-Protective-Hardshell-Accessories/dp/B07HCZ6BN5/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=tomtoc+case&qid=1598357055&s=videogames&sr=1-3
I has it for a while and loved it. Only gave it to my brother after I realized this was the best switch bag money could buy: https://villagersupplies.com/products/the-3-up-nintendo-switch-case-deep-space-black
Since you are looking for sturdy case, the tomtoc will probably be best. You should think about making your dock smaller for travel too: https://www.amazon.com/BASSTOP-Portable-Replacement-Nintendo-Original/dp/B071YVC3NJ/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=switch+dock+diy&qid=1598357119&s=videogames&sr=1-1

I don't think there are any cases specific to the switch dock on it's own. Normally, at least from what I've seen in the past, people that want to travel with their dock get the DIY dock reshell that makes the dock easier to carry around:
https://www.amazon.com/BASSTOP-Portable-Replacement-Nintendo-Original/dp/B071YVC3NJ/

Another option DIY-wise without changing the dock shell is maybe taking a smaller case purposed for something else and modify it to work for your needs. It would make you need to remove or cut out the foam and place it back where you need it but I found this nes classic case - 8in x 8in x 3in that should fit the dock 6.75in x 4in x 2in once you move/cut the foam:
https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Carry-Storage-Nintendo-Classic-switch/dp/B0714R28X6/
*there might be better options but the nes was the only idea offhand I thought might have cases around the dock size.

But if you don't want to mess with DIYing, these are the smallest cases I know or could quickly find on amazon:
https://www.amazon.com/Hermitshell-Travel-Nintendo-Switch-System/dp/B06XDYVXDN/
https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Ultimate-Storage-Case-Nintendo-Switch/dp/B07347K2FL/
https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Shell-Travel-Storage-Nintendo-Switch/dp/B0719XBLRD/

Finally I put this last because it is probably the lest relevant for your needs but this is what I have personally used the past year (holding all my switch stuff) and I can vouch for it. I like it because it is discrete, has specific compartments for the switch and dock, and I can repurpose it for other needs like my work laptop if need me (as well carry all my switch and work stuff).
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075C96GNF/
*the reason I decided to put what I use as an option is again another DIY option to take the dock part of that case and cut around the back it is stitched to. Then you will end up with a perfect fit dock case with a bit of foam to do what you wanted above. Something i'd recommend if you go this route is be aware if you don't use something like a hot knife or stitch it properly, it could unravel as time passes.
