Gotcha covered! I use an AT2020 USB+. It's a great mic for the value and lack of hassle. You can really just plug and play with this thing as long as you have some sort of desk mount or mic stand.

If you want better quality for music or stuff, friend of mine says the XLR cable version has better audio fidelity. Not anything I think you'd need for gaming though.

Looking into buying an XLR mic for my Scarlet 2i2. Was thinking of going with the AT2020 since it looks to be a good mic for fairly cheap. That and most everything is out of stock at the moment.

I stumbled upon this one on Amazon and was wondering if anyone could tell me anything about it. From the looks of it, it only comes with the mic meaning I will need a XLR cable and mic arm. Is the seller, Photo4Less reputable? It seems too good to be true.

Any help is appreciated!

I’ve been debating jumping on this one, but to be honest, even a cheap condenser or dynamic mic can sound amazing with the right (free) software.

I like the Yeti if the room is well soundproofed, or a nice cardioid if you are going to be sitting right next to the mic the whole time. This one is a pretty decent cardioid mic.

The biggest difference between the two would be the Yeti will pick up sounds really well anywhere in the room, even from 10+ feet away, while the linked Audi-Technical mic will only pick up sounds from very close to the microphone, within a foot or so, and it is directional so will only pick up sounds in front

I personally use AT2020 microphone for my home recordings. It's pretty decent mic for woodwinds. And it's pretty cheap on Amazon. If it's too expensive for you check if you have it on ebay or FB Marketplace nearby. You can check other second hand mics in your price range as well. Make sure you get a condenser mic

Get a decent mic. $100 for the one the longman uses. It's the difference between people watching your video and not.

With the 2020 USB you don't actually need an interface however if you want an XLR mic/interface so you can upgrade easier in the future the XLR version of the 2020 paired with a Focusrite Scarlet Solo is a great bet.

Unless you're just podcasting or streaming it's best to avoid USB mics. That said the Scarlett mic in that other package isn't great. Get a dedicated audio interface - the Focusrite is fine, if you only need one mic input then get the smaller one and pair it with a mic like this or if you have to go cheaper, something like this.

My 2 cents;

AT2005 (dynamic) - $79

AT2020 (condenser) - $99

not experienced with the Rode, but these are pretty cheap and are good quality mics. will work with the Focusrite.

Lots of good advice here, but I'd like to add that you should record a few songs. I don't know what style you're playing but a basic recorder with good enough quality is pretty easy and cheap these days.

A cheap audio interface and a good enough mic is not that expensive.

Interface.

Mic.

This is more of a question about peripherals (headphones and microphones), so if there’s a better subreddit for my question please let me know.

I’m looking to get new headphones and a microphone for my pc. Budget is ~$100 each. I’ve been looking at Audio Technica equipment specifically, as I like their stuff even though it tends to be a bit more expensive.

Headphones: Audio-Technica ATH-SR30BTBK Bluetooth Wireless Over-Ear Headphones, Charcoal Gray https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07KY7YKJ9/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_sDpHEb4ZHG40A

Are these worth it for the price? What are good alternatives?

Hello everyone,

I was looking for a decent but budget mic that isn't the one on my headset. I was looking at amazon, and the "Audio Technica AT2020"(https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0006H92QK/?coliid=IMIP6L5Z67HSK&colid=2O1HSWPIPUZA0&psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it) came up with pretty decent reviews and with a great price. I was wondering if it was as good as the reviews said and thought this would be a good place to ask.

P.S. The reason I was looking for a new mic was because I'm a gamer who wants to get into streaming and thought upgrading my mic would be an overall good upgrade for my set-up.

Looking to upgrade my mic setup for around $100

So basically, I have a budget around $100 to get a new upgrade for my mic setup. I currently have a $13 NEEWER boom arm, a Behringer XM8500, and a U-PHORIA UM2. A few things I'd like to point out

  • I don't like my boom arm. It makes half of my desk unusable. It squeaks a LOT when I move it which I can get past since I don't move it too much. Not sure where else I can mount it other than the side of my desk. Looking to either eliminate this issue with a stand from amazon or just getting a USB mic.
  • I'm considering a USB mic to eliminate the clutter of a wire, going to a box, then another wire going to my computer. Would rather just have the wire to the computer. Although I could just be perceiving this clutter due to the bigass boom arm coming across my desk. Also, one thing I STRONGLY desire is a physical mute button.

My needs are:

  • Discord calls
  • Occasional schoolwork where I need to use a mic (even with my current setup I am FAR ahead of anyone else who is using a mic in my class, since I am in high school, not using this for some kind of audio course or anything.
  • Perhaps some content creation in the future like YouTube.

What I'm Considering (open to suggestions for something better, not just choosing between the three).

  1. Samson G Track Pro (Amazon Link) I'm considering this since it gets rid of the clutter of my desk, it has a physical mute button, and it has an inbuilt stand. My friend uses a Blue Yeti which sounds great on discord calls, and from sound tests I have heard this mic sounds a decent bit better than the Blue Yeti in terms of clarity and deeper sounds.
  2. Audiotechnica AT-2020 (Amazon Link) + Generic Mic Stand (Amazon Link) I'm considering this since I would just be plugging new mic into my audio interface and it would sound a decent bit better too. Just a simple upgrade.
  3. Focusrite Scarlett Solo (Amazon Link) + the mic stand from before Considering this so I can have an upgrade for the audio interface, current one is fine for powering my current mic but any future ones I might get might need a better amp or something plus when I put my headphones into my current one there's a static in the background.

Thanks for your help in advance.

USB is intended for ease-of-use, casual setups (like skyping or office work). XLR mics are what all professionals use, whether it's for stage performance, voice acting, podcasts, streaming, youtubing, or recording songs in a studio. Plenty of Youtube and Twitch creators use USB mics, but you have to understand that they are objectively lower quality and will not sound nearly as good as an XLR setup. That's fine for a lot of people. But when companies release USB mics over $100, it's a bit of a waste of money. Sure, you can buy it, but it's like buying Beats headphones. The alternative gives you way better quality for the money.

XLR setups are not hard. You can get a Focusrite Scarlett Solo or other similar interface, which plugs into your computer via USB and has inputs for XLR. Then you plug in a mic with a single cable and you're a driver install away from recording high quality audio. The annoying bit is that it costs some money to buy the interface and you'll likely want a mic stand, shock-mount, and pop filter before it's complete. It's worth the investment in my opinion. I bought most of my setup used at my Guitar Center store.

You do not need an XLR setup, but be wary of dumping lots of money into fancy USB mics. They are not going to sound a million times better just because they're expensive.

Not a period as far as the eye can see.

  • 3600 should be as good as a 3600X.
  • You also don't need the DRP4 cooler, it's really unnecessary in this case.
  • A 4TB HDD is a terrible idea for games, explained below:

Most games a gigantic nowadays, so when you need to load a level, that HDD will slow down drastically. Also, games still need random reads and writes. I used to have ArmA on an HDD and I used to hit barriers that would spawn in the middle of the road because the disk wasn't fast enough.

You can take the money and get a 1 TB Crucial P1 instead. 1 TB is plenty to start, and if they wish to increase, another 1 TB probably won't be that bad somewhere in a couple months.

Now that we saved about $150, we can throw that towards a microphone that isn't bad. The Blue Yeti is not a quality microphone. So now we have about $250 to work with for an actual XLR solution.

AT2020 is a solid mic. I have it paired with a Behringer UMC22 which sounds great.

Then there's this boom arm that is half the price of a Rode PSA1 and has solid reviews.

Throw in an XLR Cable and we have an amazing audio fidelity for about $230, so still under budget.

Stay away from Harbinger, as from my experience they sound terrible and dont last.

Look at something like this Behringer as a mixer. It has decent pre-amps, enough inputs, usb for recording, and a built in effects engine. Lots of manufacturers make a similar product for under $300.

As far as a PA system, go with a reputable brand's cheaper package. Something like this pair of EON 10"s that comes with stands and cables.

This would put you in the ~$900 range with much better sounding and reliable gear. If you wanted to spend remaining budget, you could grab a couple mics and accessories. I would suggest a cheaper condenser mic like the AT2020 with a pop filter

This gear set would allow for home recording, karaoke, and even live show setups later down the road. The speakers are also pretty versital to use as PA, floor monitor, or just a boombox for tunes. With or without the mixer.

Hope this helps!

Here is an album with more closeups on the stand: https://imgur.com/a/ivB6Lh2

The AT2020 is excellent at catching my voice for comms in games or company video calls. It's gotta be tilted and pointed towards me, being a Cardioid pattern mic. If you have the coin I'd consider a better mic if you really, really care about the quality of your vocals, but this thing can't be beat for $80

The stand is a solid 10/10. Plenty of motion at each joint, and it's super sturdy. I originally cheaped out on a mic arm and got what I paid for. This thing is well worth the price. My mic is only extended about an inch past my monitor when using normally, but if I lower my monitor a bit, I can flex the arm all the way down in front of it, as shown in this picture: https://i.imgur.com/Vojx5hn.jpg

Skip the usb mic 100%. Get a mixer, get a condenser xlr mic, and just play with the knobs on the mixer. Doesn't have to be an expensive xlr, even a cheapo $20 xlr will sound as good as a yeti if you spend time adjusting the EQ on the mixer. It's not much more expensive than getting the popular streamer mics like a yeti, but it'll kick a usb mic's ass every day of the week.

recommended mixer is the Behringer Q1202usb, it's got an audio compressor and phantom power built in, and connects directly to your computer. All you gotta do is plug the mic right into it, tinker with the EQ bands, and you're golden.

Cheap Mic

Middle mic

My personal dream mic, incredibly expensive

Just do it, man.

Almost exactly two years ago some friends and I started one. We're killing it in our country!

We started with $20 mics, used a $3 XLR Splitter and connected it to a generic $18 Phantom power source. Granted, quality sucked but we were able to record and get it going!

After about a year we got our own sponsor who sent us much better equipment. Wouldn't recommend going all in just starting, but the public expects better quality even from starting projects, here's a middle-range setup:

  • Audio Technica's AT2020 mic - Can be USB or XLR
  • BEHRINGER UMC204HD Audio Interface
  • Audacity audio recorder/editor (Free). There are many many options out there, but this one I found the easiest to use. I do edit the audios on it AFTER equalizing and removing some background noise on Adobe Audition first.

And that's it! There are free hosting services (Not ideal, but it's a start). Or you can pay $8-15 to host it on a premium server with better quality, management options and even monetization from the get-go.

And that is all. Nothing to lose really.

This may sound weird, but I am looking for a high end 3.5mm microphone. After spending hours googling, I found nothing but crud.

So what I am looking at is an AT2020, Neewer 1-Channel 48V Phantom Power Supply , and a XLR to 3.5mm cable.

Will this work to make a high end 3.5mm microphone?

https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-AT2020-Cardioid-Condenser-Microphone/dp/B0006H92QK/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=XLR%2Bgaming&qid=1587805367&sr=8-3&th=1

https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-Unbalanced-3-5mm-Female/dp/B00ZIY06CA/ref=psdc_11973421_t1_B077L3TCYS

P.S. If anyone knows any high end 3.5mm microphones they could recommend, that would also be good.

Astro A20’s would be fine for the headset. You don’t really need them for anything other than listening to the game when streaming.

If you don’t mind having a few extra wires, an XLR mic+interface would be a lot higher quality and you can get a decent entry level mic setup for around $250.

The Audio Technica AT2020 is a really good mic and is only $100 on Amazon right now. They also offer a decent “streamer bundle” for $150 that comes with mic arm, XLR cable, monitor headphones and the AT2020 microphone. I’ve not used the headphones, but they seem to have pretty decent reviews.

In order to use this mic, you will need an audio interface. The one I use is the Behringer U-Phoria UM2.

I will say that Behringer is more of a budget friendly company and there are better quality products available. One such product is the Scarlett Focusrite Solo. It comes with Pro Tools (a digital audio workstation, or DAW, used for audio production like podcasts, music, etc.) if you order from amazon for $110, however, it doesn’t get cheaper if you buy it without the DAW.

With the AT2020 streamer bundle and the Focusrite Solo, you’re looking at a total of $260. So slightly over your budget, but it would be the highest quality for your budget, imo. If you substitute the Focusrite for the U-Phoria, you have about $50 left over with a slight decrease in quality, but room to order extras like a pop filter and an extra XLR cable.

If all of that is really intimidating and sounds like a bit too much, a Blue Yeti with a pair of Steelseries Arctic 7, which is what I use, and you’ll be plug-n-play ready.

I recorded vocals for my last album using an AT2020 ( https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-AT2020-Cardioid-Condenser-Microphone/dp/B0006H92QK ) and the sound engineer I work with in Norway had used the same when he was getting started so that's a good choice.

As for the keyboard I got a Korg Nanokey 2 which has worked great for me. https://www.amazon.com/Korg-25-Key-Midi-Controller-NANOKEY2BK/dp/B004M8UZG0

To connect it I go https://www.amazon.com/PreSonus-AudioBox-USB-Recording-System/dp/B071W6YVDR/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=presonus+audiobox&qid=1595445133&s=musical-instruments&sr=1-3

Working as an SysAdmin in IT has always afforded me a fair amount of remote work from home time, but with Covid19 it was time to go all in. I am very fortunate to have spent the last 3 months exclusively in the home office. Because of this I have been slowly upgrading everything except my actual PC over the past month and have finally reached the finish line.

Small time new streamer here!

If you have a Canon camera, you can use that as a webcam through their software, though it is limited to a some models for now, it's in beta but works really well : Link

Invest in an XLR microphone + Audio Interface, that way you have a lot of room to upgrade your mic in the future (should you need to). Personally I use the Audio Technica AT2020 and the M Audio M Track 2x2. There's a lot of cheaper options for Audio Interface like this BEHRINGER but I got the M Audio because of the Type C connection

I personally don't own a ring light but I've been using these Neewer Lights and they get really bright. I light my room with these Xiaomi Smart Lights so I'm able to set the color of my room to whatever color I want

If you're looking for capture cards, stay away from Elgato for now because of extreme price hikes, these Chinese Capture Cards came outta nowhere and blew everyone's minds with how cheap and useful it is, it captures 4K at 30fps at only 30 bucks, although it doesn't capture audio, it's still insane at what it can do. I bought 2 just because it's so cheap, it's cheaper from where I live in anyway at $5 a pop.

Can't speak for gaming headsets but I've been rocking the Audio Technica M50x for 3 years now and I love the flat audio it gives out, not a big fan of bass boosted "Gaming Headphones". Thee are monitor headsets so everything you hear is how and what the sound engineers intended to.

Shameless plug but check out my stream to see how my setup is, would be great if you can give a follow too, so close to affiliate! https://www.twitch.tv/videos/660041245?filter=archives&sort=time

Also I stream on a Ultrawide monitor so that's a bit of a rare resolution. Hope these answers your questions, cheers

So this question has many answers to it. The one major thing I will agree is that it’s best to try it to see if you love it enough to invest serious money into it. So I would advice and recommend that you get a free/lite version of DAW or a trial of a full one and buy three things: a pair of headphones, an audio interface, and a microphone.

Here’s what I recommend for the setup:

Microphone: Samson Condenser Microphone (SAM C01) - This is the only microphone at this price range that I can vouch for as it is severely underpriced.

Audio-Technica AT2020 - awesome microphone, was my first and what a beauty.

Blue Ember - solid choice, nice and crispy.

AKG P120 - I own 4 of these. Love them.

Interface:
Focusrite Scarlett Solo (3rd Gen) - underpriced. This is just a beastly.

Presonus Studio 2|4 - solid choice.

Native Instruments Audio 1 - solid choice.

Rode A-1 - this one is bananas. Rode’a first interface and does it deliver.

Headphones: Audio-Technica M40x - I own 4 of these. Just pure awesome.

Audio-Technica M50x - I own 2. Use them everyday. I couldn’t mix without these.

AKG K240 - damn solid choice.

Sony MDR7506 - Studio Classic. Nothing says pro studio like these.

Hope this helps.

Gatz

It depends on what your medium is, although, some of these tips can be used for any genre you're interested in.

So that's all I got for now. If there are any experts reading that would like to give some input I would appreciate it, I am sure I missed some things. Also, great use of my time instead of writing my midterm paper. I'll be here to answer questions.

I guess "Video Production" is the right flair?

When I started streaming I couldn't find all the info I needed in one place, so I thought I'd put something together to be used as a reference to get people started. I recommend watching at x2 speed, because then it isn't as obvious that I should have made a script.

Below are links to some of the products I mentioned. Many of the amazon links are affiliate links for a twitch streamer named Arcus -- I just thought it'd be nice to provide support for him since he's where I found most of this stuff anyway. If you want to remove the affiliate link, search amazon for the name of the product after manually going to amazon.
