Anker makes the best portable batteries that I've used, personally. You can find them in a variety of sizes on Amazon but I'd imagine a 10,000 mAh would be enough to charge your phone multiple times over the weekend

I probably should have clarified in the post: we’re debating sizes for an external power bank (like this), not for the cases themselves.

As far as the battery cases, I don’t actually recall the sizes we were looking at but I believe it was somewhere between 5-7k mAh.

Thank you for the insight on battery sizes and for the well wishes!

> Also you end up tethered to whatever is charging your USB battery, whereas I can just switch out new ones in and walk away. Plug in something that’s already there? You need to be by an outlet to actually charge your battery.

Not really true. A 10000 mAh battery bank probably takes up less space than your spare batteries. And the battery mods will give you more battery life per charge compared to rechargeables (which is good because a brighter IPS screen will draw a bit more power). And in my experience, Lithium ion batteries charge faster (especially over USB-C rapid charging) compared to NiMh batteries. I mean, I can charge my phone's 3300 mAh battery from 20% to full in about an hour.

I carry this Anker 10000mAh battery. It's what typically gets recommended. I see there are newer versions now as well as larger ones that are double the capacity. Solid product. Looking at my Amazon I see I've had mine since 2016.

It will slow the drain, yes. But you'd see more benefit out of a larger battery, both in terms of drain and counterweight. Something like this one, which provides 2.4A and 10000mAh capacity, and is slightly heavier, would be a better way to go. And it's only $6 more right now.

You use them during the day and recharge them overnight.

I'm not sure of lifetime or how many charge cycles the have, but Anker is reliable enough to use.

Something like this would be good enough for a whole day: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0194WDVHI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_KnlbFb6HCRXSR

Here's a 10000 mAh pack on Amazon, I think the one I selected for my build is 21000, which roughly calculated should run a raspberry pi and display and network switch for about 11 hours at full load, which realistically is never going to be reached. With just the switch running, it should be roughly 40 hours. So if you can live with 10K, it might work for you

This is the one you want: https://www.amazon.com/Anker-PowerCore-Ultra-Compact-High-speed-Technology/dp/B0194WDVHI

It's basically down to this and the new Nitecore 10k which is an ounce lighter and $40 more expensive.

I havent added up how many play sessions I get on a single charge. I dont play for more than 2hrs at a time, but I can probably get 4hrs in addition to the inbuilt battery. For a total of roughly 6-7hrs. There is something odd on the quest tho, it seems at a certain threshold of some sort (perhaps temperature related) ... after an hour or so ... rather than using external, it will switch to internal only, till you let it sit a bit(cool down?) ... then it will use external again.

Some additonal details about the mounted battery pack. Its an anker powercore 10,000. It costs $27 USD but i already had it on hand for this build, so i sacrificed it. Here's a link if youre interested. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0194WDVHI/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_OM3dEb7KK5GM4

I used gorilla glue inside the popsocket to keep the battery from spinning freely on the mount. I used superglue at first, but it didnt hold well. Be careful not to put too much gorilla glue because it expands in volume as it cures. It has held prefrctly and doesnt spin. Just to clarify, i only put glue inside the socket. Thr battery still removes freely from the mount and can be removed entirely.

After gluing the popsocekts and mounts into place, i used a velcro belt strap to further secure the battery to the back of the headset. Keep in mind that the battery pack's center of gravity is not actually in the middle of the device. The center of gravity is skewed slightly to the opposite side of the IO ports. This is important so that the battery stays centered on your head and is comfortable and doesnt lean to one side or the other due to its weight being off center.

I encourage you to invest in one of these:

Anker PowerCore 10000mAh battery pack @ $26

Should last you 5+ years of abuse being banged around in a backpack, and then you can charge your phone anywhere, anytime.

There are nicer & fancier units out there, but for $25 that's probably the very best value.

You're welcome! I hope it helps! The one thing to note is that there isn't really any way to plug your phone in while it's in the lockbox (no holes for cords or anything) so charge your phone up before bed. If your phone doesn't hold a charge very well, one of those portable battery packs fits in the lockbox with the phone as long as you don't get a really big one. I had to do that one night, I wasn't paying attention and my phone was at 20% when it was time for bed! I keep one of those battery packs charged just for general out-and-about usage (it comes in so handy at airports especially, not that I'm traveling currently...) and it worked a treat! Phone was fully charged in the morning lol.

Tarp should be in porch mode for airflow reasons.... Both sides... You want the shade but not the air restricted.

Nets can block airflow... If bugs aren't bad... Dump the net...

Small micro fiber cloth and your water supply.. wet the cloth... Wipe it on yourself... That is step one.

Step 2 is a USB fan https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07S16QQJL And a battery bank https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0194WDVHI

When the fan blows across the moisture on your skin it will evaporate taking heat with it.

It won't last forever...

I put the batter bank in my Ridgeline organizer and attach fan... Gooseneck it over the structural Ridgeline and back down.

I bought several battery banks off amazon to test out for a project at work. Company wanted to get rid of mifis and get everyone using the hotspot on their company phones instead to save some money. We anticipated people would complain about battery life of their phone, so I wanted to find an optional battery bank to offer. Of the 3 I purchased, one was rated at "~~20,000~~ 25,000mAh" but my discharge tests proved it had all of ~~9800~~ 15,000mAh capacity. Edit: I checked my notes and even found the battery bank in question. The RLERON 25,000. Don't get me wrong, it works great and has some nice features, plus it doesn't have a very high quiescent current. For free, this thing is pretty useful. Company reimbursed me for buying the test models.

Amazon is a fantastic convenience, but man.. you just can't trust anything from there unless it's coming straight from a reputable company. The battery bank I ended up selecting to offer was the Anker PowerCore 10,000. Would it shock you to learn it consistently discharged above 9000 mAh? I really like Anker products.

On a side note, since we're touching on the topic of Amazon reviews... Have any of you heard about the mystery seeds from China? This is related to an amazon scam called "Brushing." The Seller creates a fake email address, signs up for an account on amazon under that, and uses a US citizen's name/address to "buy" one of their products off their own Amazon store. Create a shipment, put seeds or whatever in it, something that's free/cheap and abundant, then once it's marked as delivered that fake Amazon account is now a verified buyer. Once the buyer is verified, they can pad the reviews of their shitty product and nobody is the wiser.

On a secondary side note: Beware of any product on amazon with a TON of 5 star reviews, and very few or no 4-1 star reviews. A coworker somehow got signed up with this group that'll send you a list of products from Amazon to review. You select them, they'll paypal you $$ for the product, then you buy it and review. They highly encourage you to leave 5 star reviews on anything you review. According to my coworker, most of the products he's chosen for review are actually pretty decent, but you have to be smart about what you pick.

I have two of these batteries: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0194WDVHI/

I put clips on each so I can clip to my back waistband and switch them out, if needed. These batteries keep up fairly well, but won't keep the Quest at 100% forever.

What I do is plug one of these batteries in when starting a session, even when the Quest is at 100%. The Quest will stay at 95%+ for a very long time (haven't tracked hours yet) before it really starts to slowly trickle down. That trickle starts to kick in when the Quest heats up from gaming.

I have yet to drain the entire external battery + Quest battery. I'm usually done playing VR after 4 or so hours straight and take a break. During the break I can charge the Quest and jump back in with my extra battery.

I have a wireless adapter and can answer all your questions.

1) Yes the spare USB port in the HMD will still function as it did with the wired solution. However, most wireless users attach a USB fan to the wireless adapter because the thing gets hot as fuck which causes grey screens and crashes. So you'll need to put a USB splitter up there to use both the mic and a fan.

2) Yes switching to "wired mode" is a huge pain in the ass. As you have to open up the HMD and switch out the cables. Buy a 2nd battery. The one linked below is the one I use. Between the HTC battery, and this one I have more than 5 hours of play time. Also this battery fits inside of the holder that comes with the wireless adapter so its win-win.

if I can get a few (3-4) hours out of a combination of AA's like this: https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-High-Capacity-Rechargeable-Batteries-Pre-charged/dp/B00HZV9WTM that would work for me.

Ideally I'd like a self contained pack of rechargeable batteries like this: https://www.amazon.com/Anker-PowerCore-Ultra-Compact-High-Speed-Technology/dp/B0194WDVHI/ (not necessarily this exact size, but this style of pack) that'd be ideal. I'm just not sure if they make packs like that that can put out 15v @ 1.2 amps. and I don't know enough about conversions to know if modifying one to put out what I need is possible/feasible.

> How and why was this homeless methhead sexgod nomad posting to Reddit? Treating this as anything but a joke seems pretty credulous.

The library is free. Even without that, a Nokia 5 is $140, an HP Stream is $200, and an Anker PowerCore 10000 is $20, and they will all last last years if you take care of them (making their amortized cost per month negligible). McDonald's/Burger King/KFC/etc. will let you use their Wi-Fi and charge your things while you grab a bite, and you can use their bathrooms too while you are at it.

I guarantee you every homeless guy has at least a smartphone and a cell phone power bank (I know, because I have seen them). It's an interesting feature of our civilization that food and electronic Chinese gadgets are so cheap compared to housing.

For chargers, here are some more affordable alternatives, all of which have a ton of great reviews:

I think it’s important that you keep your wishlist reasonable—especially when it comes to costs—when you are asking internet strangers to buy things for you. To further underscore my advice, it could put some people off when they scroll through your list and see things like Rokus and expensive portable chargers for which there are many more affordable alternatives, and you could come off looking hugely entitled. At least, this was definitely my impression when I looked at your list looking for a way to help you:

here are my top suggestions:

  1. this PU leather facial interface from Kiwi Design is great for improving comfort and hygiene, with a venting system on top I've never fogged the lenses with this thing during intense play sessions. it also comes with a lens cover and an anti light leak nose cover.
  2. the AMVR back head strap is great for revealing some of the back and front head pressure that most people have when using it for an extended period of time, plus it's just comfy.
  3. another one from AMVR, it's the anti throw / protective sleeving for the touch controllers. this solves two problems, the battery cover won't slide out during game-play and it gives you a knuckles like strap that's great to have for increased immersion.
  4. lastly, this anker battery bank is nice and small for a 10,000 mAh battery (also hefty for the size) that will be easy to strap to the back of the headset with some velcro straps. combine it with a 1.5 ft quick charging cable and you will be able to play for a long time

I'm going to apologize in advance for the wall of text. I'll try my best to break it down into manageable pieces, and create a 2nd reply for water.

1) You got it. The idea here is to be able to rely on your smart phone and/or other mobile devices for as long as possible during a power outage, the reasons should be obvious. When it comes to keeping the electrical needs met, these are the criteria I use:

  • Battery bank cable type should match your mobile device, makes cable management much easier to handle

  • Know the battery capacity of your mobile device(s), and how long a charge typically lasts based off your every day use. The minimum requirement is you'll want to be able to charge your phone based off every day heavy use. What this means is if you charge/discharge your phone 2 or 3 times, multiply that by your battery capacity and that will give you your bank capacity; 2600mAH phone battery cycled 3 times = 7800mAH battery bank. This battery bank by Anker is more than enough to keep a typical phone topped off 3-4 times over.

  • You'll want a way to charge your bank. A completely depleted 10,000mAH bank will take about 6hrs to charge from a wall socket, sometimes longer if not on a fast charger. If you're going to plan on charging this from your car, plan accordingly. You also run the risk of depleting your car's battery if you're not careful. A folding solar panel like this one has enough power to top off my 10,000mAH bank from about half-charge to full in about 6hrs. This setup is enough to keep my phone, BT speaker, and some other odds and ends charged basically indefinitely (I have to budget my usage though).

From here, you can go as deep into power banks as one of these from Renogy, or one of these from Rockpals to power 110v devices. You'll need a 12v to 110v inverter on that Renogy bank, or do what I did and get 12v power cables for your 110v devices. For reference, that Renogy bank can power my laptop for a few hours using a 12v transformer cord.

Hello, welcome to my TED talk. My EDC seems to line up with most others I've seen, but having it written out with some reasoning will hopefully be helpful!

Last year was super smooth for the three days we attended -- we didn't make any hotel or car stops during the day, and I carried a low-profile 9L sling bag. While there are people for whom it may be necessary, I absolutely recommend avoiding a roller bag if you can.

My essentials (every day) included:

  • 1L Nalgene filled with water
  • Various small snacks - Dealer's choice - anything healthy & not likely to lead to sticky hands or an energy crash
  • Travel-size hand sanitizer
  • Travel-size pack of tissues
  • Band-Aids, painkillers - Even with the most broken-in shoes and well-rested brain, foot blisters and headaches are no fun
  • A power bank -- I use a 10,000 mAh Anker
  • Pack-able / Re-usable grocery bags (1 - 2) - To carry any purchases you make /anything else you pick up that doesn't fit in the main bag.
  • A small notebook & pen - I think this is essential, but it's debatable. I like taking quick notes to remind myself of things to check out / demo / etc., but can be done just as easily with a phone.
  • My favorite small game(s) - Emphasis on both 'favorite' and 'small.' Many people suggest not bringing any games & just discovering new ones, but nothing makes me want to share / play a game of (my favorite) Tak quite like the pure energy of a con.
  • Cash - When days blur together, physical money makes budgeting easier!
  • A way to escape for a bit - This is probably my biggest take-away over the years and it's probably something you'd bring anyway, but I recommend doing so with intention. Being in the ICC during GenCon is a little like going to a tamer Las Vegas strip.. tons of activity and cool things to see/do, not a ton of places to easily decompress. I deliberately bring a set of earbuds so that I can disengage for a bit -- take a break, listen to music, and let the con happen around me. This could just as easily be a Kindle, earplugs, whatever, but it's an addition that's helped me enjoy my entire experience more.

Things I've learned to avoid:

  • Tablet / iPad - I brought a smaller tablet my first year as a 'just in case' thing, but never used it. It was nice to have back at the hotel for watching movies, but just a weight on my back during the day.
  • Bigger 'just in case' games - I love Raiders of the North Sea, but there's no way I'm subjecting myself to ten hours of carrying the box.
  • A dedicated USB/AC adapter - The power bank replaces this, meaning it only takes up space!
  • Filling my bag to capacity -- It's REALLY nice to not have to carry anything with your hands. The freedom to buy a few small games without pulling out one of my bags is wonderful.

If this will be your first GenCon (or con in general), I recommend reading through a few of the many guides people have posted -- you could learn something invaluable if you manage to find an author who seems to have similar perspective / experience / priorities as you.

Make that yourself for 5 bucks! I did without a problem. That thing is just 3 Velcro straps... DO NOT pay 20 bucks for that. Buy a box of Velcro straps..

$5 bucks I used these to make that same strap that's $20 bucks. You can make 10 of them with this for 5 bucks.

Need a USB-c cable? $7 bucks

Battery pack? $20 bucks! It's the perfect size! Cost as much as that strap...

Confession time: I watch Dixie's videos on occasion and her recent Budget Backpacking Gear List video got me thinking about the Working (Wo)Man's List in the side bar. I was gonna make a post on it but most of the links still seem to be both worthwhile and working with a few exceptions. I've provided 3 updated links below that meet the same or almost exactly the same criteria as the original links.

Additionally, the 4th link is for a backpack, as Katabatic Gear does not make backpacks anymore seemingly. Specifically, I picked the GG Kumo. I'm by no means an authority in things UL but it IS a pretty well tested pack and I know /u/Morejazzplease is a big Gossamer Gear fan. Happy the hear other suggestions though.

Cascade Mountain Trekking Poles (replaces Monoprice Poles Link)

Power Bank (Currently only $17.99 for this 10Kmah Anker gadget)

Montbell Chameece Fleece (same but updated)

GG Kumo Backpack (yours for a modest $165 American)

Florida Native here. When there’s a hurricane coming, there never enough supplies at the last minute therefore I have a “Hurricane Supplies Box.” This is what I have on hand for hurricane season and restock supplies before or at the beginning of the season. Hopefully this helps you to build your own.

  • Portable Battery-powered Fans : No power means no A/C and these can be a godsend
  • Portable battery phone charger : Saves you from having to constantly charge phones in the car.
  • Batteries
  • Lots of Candles- camping ones last longer : Take into consideration that while most hurricanes have short power outages, occasionally we get a hurricane that leaves us out of power for weeks.
  • Matchboxes to light the candles
  • Flashlights- at least one Lantern Flashlight
  • Battery powered radios : Especially useful when you want to conserve phone battery
  • Buckets (at least 2) : Used to fill with water for bathing and washing hands in case there’s a pipe burst that contaminates water supply.
  • Water containers- I use a collapsible 5 gallon camping water bag: For drinking water, again, in case of water contamination.
  • Gas Can(s)- Lines for gas can get ridiculous down here.
  • Portable camping stove – personally I have a dual propane / butane model
  • Butane or propane: Butane if you need portability, Propane if you don’t need to move the stove; propane is also easier to find in stores and you can get an adapter if you wish to hook up to a 20lb propane tank.
  • Large Cooler : To preserve food when power is out and fridge is not cool anymore.
  • Ice Packs for Cooler : Saves you from getting Ice at the last minute. Pop them in the freezer and when you need them put them in your cooler.
  • Canned Goods

Not an expert on baby supplies, but what might help would be to think of the things that your baby would absolutely need and plan for at least a 5 day supply of those things.

Do you already have a first aid kit, headlamp, food bag, compass, lighter, knife, water bottle, water filter, and other accessories? What about the big items - backpack, sleeping bag, sleeping pad?

What about clothing? Rain jacket, leggings, shorts, wool socks, fleece jacket, shirt, synthetic underwear, and other athletic clothing is nice to have for backpacking.

For the love of your knees/back - keep your pack weight under 50 pounds. Really - keep it under 40 for long mile trips. Especially if you have a cheap backpack that does not carry loads well.
