Advice from a STM

Hey all, I wrote this as an email to another friend who's also expecting as a general brain dump of the first few months, but figured it might be helpful to FTMs here (other STMs feel free to add!) Sorry for the wall of text!

Timing: The first 2-3 weeks we literally said the words "this isn't nearly as bad as we thought it would be!"  In general, they spend the first few weeks not totally realizing they're out of the womb and seem to be okay just eating and sleeping.  Around week 3-4 is when baby got angry she was alive. Every kid is different, but I heard from other moms they experienced the same. We loved those first few weeks of it just being us to snuggle and sleep, we waited until after the chaos started to accept help from others (family).

Remember EVERYTHING is a phase and usually only lasts a couple weeks.  There will always be a "they're doing this thing and i don't know how to make it stop and this is terrible OMG HOW WILL I SURVIVE" something going on. KNOW that everything is temporary, accept it, be okay with it.

Eating

  1. Gripe Water: Great to have on hand- great for general calming and gas. We made several random trips to Target when we ran out.

  2. Breastfeeding: a) No one told me how much it would hurt when you first start. I was sobbing every time for the first 2 days. Your nipples just aren't used to being attacked every hour, so it takes some adjustment. However, it DOES get better and get a lactation specialist if you even QUESTION the latch. Most insurance (US) covers it and better to get the help when you dont than get cracked nipples and all the 'fun stuff'. b) Do NOT feel pressured.  I breastfed my first, will not even try with my second. To some people it's awesome, comes naturally, no issues.  To some its fine, they deal with it because of all the benefits. To others, it's something that greatly impacts your mental health and (potentially) the health of your baby if you're not producing enough and don't know it.  I learned this the VERY hard way with a trip to children's hospital because they thought she had liver issues (she didn't, just was underfed so couldn't shake the jaundice) and I still have severe guilt around it.  Hospitals around me tend to have a "breastfeed or die" mentality, remember this is YOUR life and YOUR family.  Do what makes you all happy and healthy in the short AND long term.

  3. Formula: IF breastfeeding doesn't workout OR you supplement, every kid likes a different formula- all of the brands will send free samples so you don't spend a fortune trying to figure out what works best.  Community Facebook moms will also give them away when they get them in the mail.

In general, eating is hard the first few months.  Their digestive system is still new so some kids have really bad acid reflux, almost all have bad gas... just be patient and talk to your doctor about what you're experiencing.

Sleeping

  1. Sleepwear: THESE make them look like 90 year old men, but MAN doing your 6th diaper change at 3am is made MUCH easier when you don't have to stick their legs back into leg slots and zip/button anything up.

  2. Swaddling: is cute, but way easier with THESE.  They pair up nicely with the 'sleepwear' stuff since these cover the feet and keep those little toes from getting cold.  They are a little loud in the middle of the night (velcrow) but you will go NUTS trying to do manual swaddles.  Also note that some kids just don't like being swaddled, they're jerks like that.

  3. Pacifier: Up to you if you want to use them or not.  We used them a lot the first few months, then only for sleep after that.  For us it really helped keep her quiet on planes, in weddings, when I was losing my mind, etc.  THESE are the most popular for newborns, but I literally had to hold them in her mouth because she wouldn't suck on it hard enough to keep it in (i have memories of being slopped over the crib holding one finger to it).  We switched to THESE and loved them - they seemed to stay in easier. As they get older, the glow in the dark ones are clutch for helping them find it themselves in the middle of the night (so you dont have to get up and stick it back in)

  4. Changing Pad: THESE disposable changing pads are life.  For some reason, babies participate in a fun game of "pee in the middle of a diaper change in the middle of the night" (way more often than i thought) and blowouts at 2am are SO REAL.  Being able to just pull this up and put another one down is so much better than doing laundry or swapping out fabric covers (we used a fabric cover and this over it).

  5. Sound Machine: White noise for us was critical (it hides the sound of you sleeping so the baby isn't disturbed as much).  We still use one for our 3 year old and she has ALWAYS been an awesome sleeper with it (still good without, but amazing with).  THIS is the one we use and let it run all night. It's pricier than others but it's been going strong for 3 years. She doesn't have issues sleeping without it at school (i was worried about that)

  6. Sleep Location: Every kid/parent combo is different, so take this with a grain of salt.  For us, our kid slept in our room next to us in a pack and play until 8 weeks on the dot (we had one that had a bassinet and a changing table - was definitely awesome to have a changing table right next to where the baby was).  At 8 weeks old, we moved her to the nursery and she went from waking up every 3 hours to only getting up 1-2 times a night.  She slept through the night at 10 weeks and it was awesome.  Some parents really like to be in the same room for the full year (and there are plenty of studies that support it), and that's great- wasn't for us.  So just make the best decision for you and your family!

  7. 4 Month Sleep Regression: No one told me about this and I felt personally victimized by my baby. Most (not all) will go through several sleep regressions in the first year.  The biggest and hardest for most kids is at the 4 months mark where their bodies switch over to REM sleep and they freak the f**k out.  Ours went from sleeping a solid 13 hour night to up every hour.  For us, it was teaching her how to find her pacifier again and really only lasted 3-4 weeks.  For others, it goes on for months.  My big point here is that there are professionals to help when babies go several months in a regression and still aren't sleeping through the night.  We didn't need them, but I've heard many parents with 1 year olds who still don't sleep through the night complain they waited too long to get help.

Keeping Your Sanity:

  1. Nose Frida - yes, it's gross (no, snot never goes into your mouth).  However it's a life saver when your little one can't breath because of snot and they can't blow their nose. Not sure we would have survived the first year without this.

  2. Baby Tylenol - just having this on hand is so critical (obviously talk to your doc and follow their instructions).  You never know when a kid is going to wake up with a fever, you cant get a doc appt for a few hours, and they're in pain (and you really don't want to make a run to target with a screaming, feverish baby)

  3. Delivery Wipes and Diapers - We use Huggies, but every kid's body shape does well in different brands - but getting a subscription on amazon (or somewhere else) will usually save money AND time.  It's actually weirdly hard to shop for giant boxes of diapers while having a newborn in tow (you can't push a stroller and a cart at the same time unless you're just talented like that)

  4. Instacart - this adds up so it does get pricey, but instacart has made life SO much easier for when we dont want to take a crying baby to the grocery store.

  5. Getting Help - Be okay with partners doing things a little differently.  I think this is more of a mom issue than a dad issue, but a lot of moms (myself included) end up taking on a lot of the work because their partner does it slower or less effectively.  I got to a point where i was always the one soothing her because it took him too long, or changing the diapers because he put the tabs on crooked or too low. If it's not hurting the baby, try to learn to be okay with 'good enough' or you will end up taking on the majority of the work and have a lot of resentment for your partner/helpers. So what if it takes him/her double the time to feed the baby? In the end, baby gets fed, you chill, and he gets bonding time.  This sounds very 'duh', but 3 months in I found myself doing it hard - this was definitely a big adjustment for me.

  6. Changing Stations - If you have more than one place to hang out, have a 'changing basket' in each room or a portable one to take with you.  We slept in our bedroom but hung out in the living room on another floor.  Having a basket with water, a snack, wipes, extra onesie, diaper, diaper cream in each room was SO nice.  First world problems for sure, but on 2 hrs of sleep you REALLY don't want to have to go get a diaper upstairs.
  7. Auto Rockers- Something like THIS or THIS.  Some people spend the big bucks on something like THIS, but wasn't worth it to us (but interested to know if other moms thought it was worth it).  Keep in mind a LOT of this stuff can be bought on facebook market place (you only use it a few months, even if it feels like years, and a good washing makes it almost seem like new!) Keep in mind, there's researched risks of letting babies sleep in these things - for us we couldn't survive without it, but make sure to do your research and make your own informed decisions.
  8. Clothes- Everyone got us super cute clothes for baby - she lived in a diaper and pajamas 90% of the time. I feel so guilty putting away half the clothes that still have tags on them so keep that in mind on registries- keep it to the necessities (people will buy the cute clothes anyways).
  9. Registry Gift Cards- My god, the level of takeout we ordered in the first 3 months! Add giftcards to your favorite restaurants or delivery services to your registry (especially now during the pandemic) - you will find that the GrubHub giftcard you never thought you'd use is GOLD.\
  10. IMPORTANT Baby Love - not everyone feels that wave of love for their baby the second it's born. I loved my daughter from day one, but the 'i would throw myself in front of a train for her' love that I have now, did not come until later. MUCH later. Do not feel guilty if this is you. Some feel it right away, and some feel it later on- do NOT feel like you did something wrong if you're the latter.
  11. VERY IMPORTANT Be Nice- My poor, poor husband. That sweet, strong, giving, kind man received the wrath of a demon for the full first year of my daughters life. Between stress, postpartum depression, and adjusting to our new life - i was unhappy. Very unhappy. And there was nothing he could do about it and he received the blunt end of that stick day after day and still stuck around. Having a baby WILL change your life - some people adjust easier than others, but nonetheless it's hard at some point for everyone. Try to remember that your partner is in your corner - you're a team, and FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, remind them that you love them and you care about them and say thank you every once and a while.
  12. MOST IMPORTANT Take Care of Yourself - This is the hardest part. Everything you do for yourself will feel like a waste of time. I could be doing the laundry or cleaning up or feeding the baby... there will ALWAYS be something to do. But there's a reason they tell you to put your mask on first in an airplane - you simply cannot care for a child the way you want to with an empty soul. Take a moment (or 20) to yourself every day. Meditate, run, sit outside, take a bath, get a massage, whatever floats your boat - but do SOMETHING that will help you remember that you are your own person outside of a child and family. You are a powerful, wonderful individual and you will need to make a conscious decision to remind yourself of that.

Noise machines are amazing for this. When I was younger I lived in a 100-year-old house that would creak and groan and had paper-thin walls. I invested in a noise machine to help me sleep and I can't sleep without one now, it's just a sort of low level background noise that you can't even hear after a while, and it covers up random noises in the house.

The ultimate combination for sleeping in noisy environments is a noise machine on a loud setting + ear plugs, I used this when I was working night work and my neighbors were having an addition put on their house. I once slept through an ambulance sitting in the next door drive way with its sirens on using this combination.

Edit Here is my current one I am in love with https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00E6D6LQY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This is a great white noise machine. While I don't live behind a bar, I've been using it for years and it's been great for cutting out all sorts of noise while sleeping. Also, pick up some foam earplugs to wear while you sleep.

Any soft surface in your apartment will absorb noise but if the bar is truly loud you're going to notice it while you're trying to sleep. Bass-heavy noise is especially hard to deal with.

try grabbing a cheap white noise machine from amazon:

For a pair of cheap headphones, I'd recommend safety ear muffs (like https://www.harborfreight.com/Foldable-Ear-Muffs-70040.html) with cheap ear buds added in. Not exactly nose cancelling, but close enough for $10.

Personally I found a white noise generator to be what I needed. I use lectrofan (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00E6D6LQY/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_CQt4EbH8W720F) which is kinda pricey, but you could replicate the results with a free white noise app.

Also in terms of ear plugs I use moldex (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HJTW51Q?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share) because I find them to be soft enough for sleeping.

Hope this helps!

That tells me that if you used a smart switch it would be able to turn the noise on and off.

So it’s not an improvement to the window but I work overnights and I sleep with a noise machine. It’s fantastic. You can find it at multiple retailers it’s called lectrofan. I used to rent and we had sh*t neighbors and it really drowns out all outside noise. My fiancé laughs cause he can mow and weed whack under the bedroom window and I don’t wake up. Good luck!

We need a lot more details then this to give advice. Like who are the multiple people? Kids? Roommates who blast music?

But I think a separate room would help in most cases. A noise machine like this would help as well:

Have you tried a brown noise machine? That was my issue. I always thought I was just a light sleeper but brown noise cancels out the background sounds and now I sleep like a baby and dont wake up multiple times per night. This is the one I bought.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00E6D6LQY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_mgB2Eb7EFFDDE

There's also a YouTube video called smooth brown, pink, white noise that I used before the purchase. The machine is so much better because there's a frequency for everyone. The high pitch I use for studying the lower one puts me to sleep.

I bought a LectorFan because of an old upstairs neighbor who got up early and walk around in their hardwood floor apt in heels and was a heavy walker in general. It really changed how I sleep and even if i did get woken up I had an easier time falling back to sleep.

I use this white noise machine from LectroFan. It goes up pretty loud, I’d say it’s as loud as an AC. It’s the only thing that’s worked to block out someone snoring in the next room over.

I have this one for my bedroom. It has a ton of options but I just use the soft static sounding thing. It’s not going to cut out any loud bangs but helps cut down chatter and stuff. Highly recommend. Probably takes a night or two to get used to it.

that sounds like a very difficult kind of T to deal with, sorry to hear that. mine is immense collection of what feels like dozens and dozens of different frequencies, but they're pretty stable so my brain has gotten very good at tuning them out - i first got T when i was 19 so in some ways i wonder if i was young enough for my brain to adapt to it better? i do get spikes but i've learned through therapy i can usually just control my breathing and ride them out till they go away, unless i get a major new spike like this one today.

i would say it's been 5 or 6 years since my T upgraded from "bad" to "severe" and i find that sleep does get easier over time. definitely get a white noise machine if you don't have one, buying one of these is without a doubt the best $40 i have spent for my tinnitus, i literally just found a setting i liked and have left it on for four years straight lol. i'm sure this is advice you've gotten before though.

i know this is like, the borderline most stupid baseline advice but probably the number one thing that has helped most with sleep is listening to the signals my body tells me and sleeping when i'm tired instead of either a.) powering through to make it through till "bedtime" or b.) doing the opposite and going to bed just BECAUSE of bedtime. obviously depending on your work schedule that might not be possible, feels sometimes like capitalism and tinnitus are built to contradict one another.

I'm not an insomniac, however I often find it difficult to shut my mind down at night. I found a white noise machine that helps me sleep a lot better. This is it.

It is a little expensive, but totally worth it. It has different types of white noise, a volume changer, and you can change the pitch of each sound. Also, it's loop free, so you can't hear an audio loop.

After it’s been on for a while, I can’t hear it anymore, but I also don’t hear the neighbors’ yard guy or their dog.

Just get a white noise machine. This one from Amazon is probably the best $50 I've ever spent for my mental wellbeing. It won't mask everything, but it will make it so the sound jumps out less compared to a fully silent room.

Sound Fan for Sleeping Recommendation

Hi folks,

I currently have a Portable AC running and I love the loud and deep sound it produces for sleep and drowning out noise. I wish I could run it all year but cannot.

Are there any fans that sound similar (budget is under $100)? I have tried this cheap Lasko fan from Amazon, but the motor hum drives me crazy, and the sound is too high pitched -- prefer sounding more like an air conditioner. I do not care much about air flow, only the sound.

I have also tried this white noise machine, but it sounded too fake. Really love the sound of the portable AC!

Would appreciate any recommendations!

Thanks.

I use a white noise machine with multiple settings. It’s adjustable in volume and spectrum of noise. I like the low frequency bassy noise, but you can find one that sounds closer to your AC unit.

They cost about $30 and draw less power than a fan/filter system.

I use a noise machine with 10 or so settings. It's set to pink noise most nights, but on Saturdays when the small dick motorcycle gang comes out to cruise past McDonald's, I turn it to the engine/generator sound because the only way to mask it is to generate the same tone. https://www.amazon.com/Adaptive-Sound-Technologies-LectroFan-Non-Looping/dp/B00E6D6LQY/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?dchild=1&keywords=white%2Bnoise%2Bmachine&qid=1597188500&sr=8-1-spons&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUExRFdaOFQ2V0ZLVEhMJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwNTAwMzE2M0k5TFE3TTBHMk1ZSyZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwNjEwNzI4MkNGTkJHUzJXRlZCMiZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX2F0ZiZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU&th=1 is the one I've had for years.

(Neither of these items is appropriate for clubbing, but these two things help me at home.)

I wear closed-ear headphones while working, watching TV, or gaming. Not noise-cancelling ones, just big old-fashioned Sony Studio Monitor earmuffy things that blot out much of the outside world. (One current model's the MDR-7506; Sony's site , Amazon.com listing ) They certainly wouldn't be appropriate to wear at a bar unless you're the DJ, but at home they help eliminate distractions.

The other thing I use to screen out distractions at home is a LectroFan ; this is a version of a "white noise machine" that can emulate the sound of many different kinds of fan, so instead of just hissing, it can make a variety of low roars, good for muffling bass noises coming through the walls. (It seems to have better sound quality than phone apps that claim to do the same thing, and it can run off USB or wall power without tying up your phone.) Amazon.com listing

Hey I hope you were able to get a little sleep and can function today.

My solution to the general hubbub is a noise machine. I got a little one that plays fan noises and different colors of noise (pink, white, grey, etc) which offers different frequencies. Can't even hear helicopters, aircraft, or vehicles because the frequencies overlap. And it doesn't need to be loud at all, just a constant hum in the background. A regular box fan would also probably work.

Couple of strategies I use:

  1. Really good sunglasses I use all the time, even if it's cloudy
  2. A white noise app
  3. This white noise machine (inexpensive enough that I have a couple in my house) - better than the AC or a fan because there is no air flow, but it mimics all those types of sounds (or just produces plain noise types) https://www.amazon.com/Adaptive-Sound-Technologies-LectroFan-Non-Looping/dp/B00E6D6LQY/ref=sr_1_8?dchild=1&keywords=sound+machine+white+noise&qid=1607553424&sr=8-8
  4. Blackout curtains

My partner knows what all this is for and I just tell people at work that I have light sensitive eyes - I really do - or I need to focus on my work (I have a writing job, and the sound honestly helps) so they all seem to just accept it. It's worked out so far.

This one is almost half the price and also is a real fan.

My favorite is this one, though. It's got many noises so I can find the perfect one, and it's even cheaper. I've got one in each bedroom in the house for guests, who seem to like it. It's hard to sleep in another bed for some people.

I know the feeling. It took me several years to adjust. Some tips

I know, believe me, it sucks. It doesn't get better but it becomes tolerable.

This sound machine works a lot better than the ones that play from google home/alexa. I have it plugged into a zwave outlet so I can turn it on and off with smartthings routines. Culd be good for the nursery.

My wife is also 6 months pregnant with out first child. (due date June 19th!)

Another thing I think would be nice is a IFTTT spreadsheet so you can track feedings.

Hope other people have some great ideas.
