It could help some if you don't care about maximizing speed. Wireless extenders cut your throughput by half as a rule.

You can also just get a wireless AC to USB network adapter, like this.

USB WiFi Adapter 1200Mbps TECHKEY... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07J65G9DD?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

That’s the one, it was weird because windows would recognize the hardware only when the other client was running - if I shut down the client Windows stopped seeing it. I’d think that drivers wouldn’t need an external “thing” to make them work so I uninstalled everything and returned it lol

It came off as super sketchy to me, I didn’t even hook it up to my main WiFi out of an abundance of caution

Slow internet speeds on only 1 computer

I'm having significant issues with slow internet speeds on a desktop. I narrowed it down to a PC-specific problem as opposed to a router/modem problem since my laptop is receiving good speeds at the same time and place as my desktop.

What I've done:

  • Speed test occasionally returns results of less than 1 mbps download speed. Other times it can reach up to 20-25 mbps, but it fluctuates.

  • Speed tested laptop in the same spot as the desktop. Laptop returned 50mbps download while desktop only received 1mbps (started simultaneously).

My PC components to the best of my knowledge: https://www.cnet.com/products/acer-aspire-t3-715a-w-tower-core-i7-6700-3-4-ghz-8-gb-1-tb-dtb7zaa002/. I've so far replaced the RAM, GPU, and added an SSD boot drive.

While changing the GPU, I disconnected one of the two antennae from the existing wifi card in the desktop. I bought a USB wifi adapter in hopes that it would fix the problem. The drivers for the adapter were installed with the CD included in the box, and I double checked their website for the latest driver. The adapter appears to be functional.

Does anyone have any ideas on what may be causing the occasional dips in internet speed? Thanks for any help!

Starting this morning though this evening my internet on my pc is disconnecting at random and then also dropping down so slow on speeds that it wont load the speedtest site.

You could pick this up or something similar and create a hotspot from your computer to connect the quest to. This would bypass your router completely: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07J65G9DD/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_t1_tO4MEbCZD70XN

I don't think a product like that exists, and you'll get much better results using a normal USB WiFi dongle on the rear IO of the board.

USB 2.0 has a maximum speed of 480 Mbps (60 MBps), while USB 3.0 can handle speeds up to 5 Gbps (625 MBps).

While it's uncommon to have an internet connection speed that can fully take advantage of USB 3.0 speeds, you're very likely to be bottlenecked by USB 2.0 speeds. Something like this is likely your best bet.

USB WiFi adapters with large antennas are less than $25 at Amazon. You might want to consider that instead of a cable. This can provide the PC with a WiFi connection.

If you want to go a cable route, look up "Windows Internet Connection Sharing" and use that on your laptop. I have not done it myself (at least not recently) but I am pretty sure you can share a WiFi connection to a wired connection. The one drawback is that this almost certainly introduces what is called "Double NAT", assuming your router is also performing NAT. Outbound web surfing, and some types of VPN have no problem with double NAT, you may just have to try it and see.

Edit: Something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Adapter-1200Mbps-TECHKEY-Wireless-Network-300Mbps/dp/B07J65G9DD/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?keywords=usb+wifi&qid=1584724214&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&smid=A3KHUM65I50XQR

Unfortunately Amazon is overwhelmed with orders, and it may take a few days longer than usual for it to arrive. Places like Best Buy and Staples probably have them, if they are open around you.

I would go ahead and make one unless you need the antenna right away. You will still have to have an external wi-fi antenna connector on your laptop. Mine doesn't have one but I did have a wi-fi dongle that plugged into USB port at one time. Take a look at this to see what I mean:

https://www.amazon.com/Adapter-1200Mbps-TECHKEY-Wireless-Network-300Mbps/dp/B07J65G9DD/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=USB+WiFi+Adapter+1200Mbps+TECHKEY+USB+3.0+WiFi+Dongle+802.11+ac+Wireless+Network+Adapter+with+Dual+Band+2.42GHz%2F300Mbps+5.8GHz%2F866Mbps+5dBi+High+Gain+Antenna+for+Desktop+Windows+XP%2FVista+%2F+7-10+Mac&qid=1588756385&s=electronics&sr=1-1

Well the problem might still be around those, since it does not look like is a hardware issue, because with the ethernet cable you are having it too. You might try buying a USB WiFi antenna and see if it works, i have this one and is much faster and more efficient than the one the laptop came with. https://www.amazon.com/-/es/gp/product/B07J65G9DD/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

WiFi Card, USB WiFi Adapter, or WiFi extender with Ethernet ports

Hey guys, my friend has been needing some sort of WiFi adapter for his build since his router is in the other room so connecting directly to the router with an ethernet cable is not an option for him. I've been debating between having him get either a WiFi card like this one. A USB WiFi adapter like this one. Or a WiFi extender with Ethernet ports like this one

Wireless dongles come in a few types:

USB Tiny - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008IFXQFU

USB With Antenna - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07J65G9DD

Do your research. The ones I linked are not the only ones. Some include WiFi and Bluetooth. Some are just WiFi or just Bluetooth.

Check the WiFi speeds on the listing - you'll want AC1300 or AC/N1900. Don't get just N - it's the slower/older standard.

You need a dongle, a PCIE wifi card, or a powerline adapter.

I'm not necessarily recommending the specific ones I linked. I'm just showing you your options

You can upgrade your network card but an easier solution is just to use a usb wifi network adapter like these;

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07PB1X4CN/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_t1_88k9EbNSE47JN

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07J65G9DD/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_t1_E9k9EbB6HCZAS

But if you really want to swap your network card, then something like this should work;

So now you have the following options: 1) you can buy a motherboard with onboard wifi, like this. these are a bit pricey. 2) you can buy a PCIE wifi card. There is a variety of models out there. The main difference between them is Mbps, the more, the better, the more expensive. You can usually find one for around 30-40-50$ depending. It looks like that. And the 3) and probably cheapest option is a usb wifi adapter. These also come in varying mbps and prices. They are usually not as good as the previous options. These look like this. The general rule is that you get what you pay for. You can’t give 5$ and expect no lag or slow internet speeds. If you want a nice gaming experience(and considering you cant use ethernet) I would strongly suggest either 1) or 2).

I found a better system at a slightly higher price on that website, but it doesn't have enough RAM (both computers don't have enough RAM), and there is no wifi card in the computer if you don't want to use Ethernet. When you get the computer, I would follow this tutorial on how to install RAM into a computer. I would also go with this RAM.

Edit: forgot to mention where you can get a wifi card. I'd personally recommend this USB Wifi card because all you have to do is plug it into the back of your computer without having to install anything else.

If you're close to the router then quit using wifi and plug it in! Performance will be drastically better. You can get a 50 foot cable for less than twenty bucks.

If you HAVE to use wifi, open the case and follow the internal connection from the antenna to the card and make sure the IPEX jack is firmly seated. It's also possible you have different types of antennas(bluetooth vs wifi) and have them on the wrong jacks, so try swapping them around.

You could try replacing your wifi antenna with a better one, something like this or this (see the internal wire to the antenna? That's what you want to check the connection on) or you could just get an external wifi adapter like this

Anyone who tells you to unplug the wifi adapter and plug it in outside the case has no idea what they're talking about. The wifi card is either A) soldered into the motherboard B) on a PCIe card C) In an m.2 or proprietary slot. None of those would allow you to "plug it in externally".

I’m not sure your price points but here are some options for routers. asus Or

TPlink

Then on your computer / laptop, you can upgrade the wireless access card but purchasing a USB WiFi receiver or PCI E card for computer. usb wifi adapter Or asus pcie caes

Again I’m not sure what you use your WiFi for so I gave both home office options or gaming choices :)

Also just FYI, in cases where you don't need a graphics card there are cases like these out there: https://www.amazon.com/InWin-Chopin-Mini-ITX-stickers-Aluminum/dp/B01N091225/ref=psdc_572238_t1_B01LVV6WVU

Small form factor and built in 150w PSU (which should be enough) for $100 USD. No PCIE slot though so you would probably need a USB wifi adapter (one with an antenna) like this: https://www.amazon.com/Adapter-1200Mbps-TECHKEY-Wireless-Network-300Mbps/dp/B07J65G9DD/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=usb+wifi&qid=1591057062&s=electronics&sr=1-3

I personally owned the NZXT H210 case and although I like the aesthetics, to me there was a lot of wasted space. I've also owned this: https://www.in-win.com/en/gaming-chassis/b1/ (200w psu) and loved the simplicity of it.

Just make sure you check max cpu cooler height compatibility, for the Chopin it's 43mm and for the B1 it's 60mm so you would need something like this (a low profile cooler) https://www.amazon.com/Noctua-NH-L9i-Premium-Low-profile-LGA115x/dp/B009VCAJ7W/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=noctua+slim+cpu+cooler&qid=1591057638&s=electronics&sr=1-3
