A good number of laptops have SSDs now, but I'm really no expert on specific models.
Edit: Something like this would be good if you're on a budget.

not too good to be true, seems legit, if you are not in a rush then you can get this one from Amazon when it is in stock again (or with similar specs).

Hey, check out this Acer Aspire 5. It's a bit over your budget, but I think it's a good value pick. This one comes with a 10th Gen. Intel Core i5, 8GB RAM, and 256GB SSD. This should do well for general productivity. Performance on this laptop is very good for the price, and although the newer laptops with AMD processors are much more powerful, I think it may be a little overkill. Plus, their panels aren't as good as the Aspire's 1080p IPS panel that reaches 300 nits. The color accuracy isn't great, but it should still be pleasing to the eye.
The keyboard is a bit soft, but it's still good to type on and has a bit of a spring at the end for an almost tactical feel. This laptop does come with a 720p webcam, which is fine for video calls. Battery life is around 7 hours on this laptop, and it weighs around 4.5lbs.
I hope this helped, and feel free to ask me any questions!

this one would be a really good option as the cpu is really good. You can add more ram later and the performance would be solid. However for music production and heavy cpu bound tasks i really recommend an desktop or entry level gaming laptop like an asus fx505-dt with a ryzen 7 because gaming laptops provide really good cooling so that the cpu can go full on without thermal restrictions

The Acer Aspire 5 Slim Laptop should do all that you need. It is a great general-use laptop that should last you years. If my memory you mean storage space you can add a HDD for more space easily

I think Acer Aspire 5 would be the perfect match, as it has Intel Core i5-10210U which is a catch in this price range, 8GB DDR4, 256GB SSD and you can upgrade RAM and storage easily based on a quick search you can upgrade RAM up to 32GB and SSD up to 512GB.

Thanks for your comment! This is the laptop: https://www.amazon.com/Acer-i5-10210U-802-11ax-Fingerprint-A515-54-59W2/dp/B07XPLKZ5P/ref=mp_s_a_1_1_sspa?dchild=1&keywords=acer+aspire+5&qid=1596025277&sprefix=acer+aspire&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEzMEtGTUsyNU85U01OJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwMTc1NTE2MkNBOTdBRUo2MTBWQiZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwODY4MjIxMjdOUFhJWU01VEExJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfcGhvbmVfc2VhcmNoX2F0ZiZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU=
I only chose this one because it is affordable and has at least 8GB RAM, which I read is important for programming. How should I check how old the processor is?

Acer Aspire 5 might be up your alley. There are a lot of configurations out there but here's one in your range with 8GB RAM / 256GB SSD: https://www.amazon.com/Acer-i5-10210U-802-11ax-Fingerprint-A515-54-59W2/dp/B07XPLKZ5P/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=acer+aspire+5&qid=1585438861&sr=8-4

I recommend the Acer Aspire 5, It is well-built and has a great balance of specs which can manage a little bit of everything. Its quad-core CPU and 8 GB of RAM will keep it running smoothly even when you have lots of programs or tabs open. It can run World of Warcraft and other light games and Its SSD will allow it to boot in seconds as well. If you want to upgrade the storage or RAM in the future it is very easy to do as well. It has a very long battery life so you should be very satisfied.

A lot of the recommendations were at the cap of my budget range and I’m trying to look at options that might be a little lower too.

No I wouldn't recommend this one to play lol on, this is for person who would want to travel because its 14inch size and fair weight which 3.6lbs and just want to web browse and some light Microsoft Word etc work on. However I would recommend getting the Acer Aspire 5 Slim Laptop, 15.6" Full HD IPS Display it can manage games like lol

Acer Aspire lineup is pretty good price to performance. This one is good balance of price to performance, and if you decide to, it is a great mobile device. I personally daily one of these (I am actually writing on its less powerful cousin, but I can't seem to find it on Amazon anymore).
Unlike mine, this one also has a fingerprint reader. It should be good. The webcam on these aren't amazing, but it is good enough for a Zoom call. People always compliment me on my microphone, but I am using its built in one...

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07XPLKZ5P/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_YmG8EbG54GAQ9 I think this one. And also, how does this acer swift 3 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MPCR2GZ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_RnG8EbH3D32AZ compare to the one you mentioned?

Thanks, my dude! I honestly don't know how you do this unless it is your job. My last question: What do you think of these?

A 2020 Asus vivobook should do the trick for you. It offers great performance and allows light gaming with the AMD Ryzen 3 3500U processor, a Radeon Vega 8 Graphics, 8GB RAM, 128 SSD, good battery life and lightweight. If you are willing to stretch the budget a little bit more, another option is the Aspire 5 which offers more SSD and punch.

> That budget abit low for what you're looking for.
800-1k USD for a thin laptop with good battery life for programming? Really depends on what sort of programming.. Some just need to run a text editor and there are plenty of options in the $500 USD bracket for that, going up to $1k allows for better quality screen, cpu and memory.
$580 for this 10th gen Intel i5 Acer machine on Amazon, Little more to add in Nvidia MX500 and double the SSD storage(m.2) from 256GB to 512GB. That also comes with Wifi 6(802.11ax) which is nice if you have any routers to support it in future. 4GB of the RAM is soldered, but there's a upgradeable dimm slot, so swap out the other 4GB for a 16GB stick and you've got a reasonable laptop with 20GB RAM now. The display is probably so-so however.
Less value for specs is this ASUS C434 Chromebook at $465($430 via Amazon Renewed) atm, lowest price this product has been since release. It's an all aluminum body with a decent screen closer to 300 nits of brightness, great sRGB color gamut and not too bad for Adobe gamut iirc. Biggest downsides is 64GB eMMC for storage(eMMC isn't particularly fast) and 4GB RAM, not upgradeable. CPU is much weaker but is a low power type allowing for battery to last over 10 hours and not need any fan cooling, so no noise. The keyboard also gets pretty good praise.
Going even cheaper, at $345 is this ASUS VivoBook with AMD 3200U, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD and Windows instead of ChromeOS. The keyboard looks less appealing, the body is going to have a less premium feel to it, and the screen probably isn't great either, decent RAM though. CPU is more akin to the Intel i3 8130U I think(dual core, 4 threads).
So uhh... $1k budget should be fine, programming isn't as demanding as gaming most of the time. Most developers don't need to invest a big portion of the budget into a GPU.

Thanks for response. Looking that this laptop I don't believe it is touch screen or able to be used with a stylus correct? could you recommend one so I can see how much more they are?
Also, I was wondering what the other variations of this laptop mean? I found about 5 different series or variations but not sure what is different...for example w/prices:
A515-55-56VK - the one you recommended 10th Gen Intel Core i5-1035G1 $669.99
A515-54-59W2 - which has a different core: 10th Gen Intel Core i5-10210U $669.99
A515-54-51DJ - with 8th Gen Intel Core i5-8265U $695
A515-54-37U3 - with 10th Gen Intel Core i3-10110U $494.00
Thank you for the help.

COD is pretty damn graphic intense and wouldn't be playable on most options in your budget and most won't be very well built. It'll be playable on lower settings with an Asus TUF or similar device, but you'll be sacrificing build quality, portability and battery life.
As mudgts mentioned, I'd probably suggest a thinkpad, such as the T470. It's incredibly well built, have great keyboards, decent portability, and have a long battery life. The HD 520 graphics in the T470 are also fine for playing LoL and similarly light games (likely only on low/medium settings). It would be more then enough for data entry on the job.
You can also consider even more powerful and newer options like a Swift 3 or Acer Aspire 5 but they won't have quite as rugged build quality as the T-series thinkpad.

If you already have a desktop for heavy applications, I'd focus on getting something that has a good keyboard and screen, while not breaking the bank.
Honestly...?
360 bones, good (low resolution) screen, one of the best keyboards Apple has made, still a pretty good track pad even by today's standards, and it still looks stylish. If it gets lift you're not out thousands of dollars, and it can be updated to run fairly recent MacOS. The performance is pretty bad, but if you wanted to get it up to date you could drop in an ssd and more ram, and it would honestly run right up there with significantly newer MBPs. This would fit in almost any backpack and you get the Apple logo. Only real downside in it's current state is that it has an hdd istead of an ssd.

As far as windows machines:
It's quite a bit more than the refurbished Macbook, but you get much better features and a nice big bump to performance. I have no idea what the keyboard or screen are like, but Acer usually does pretty well for their price point. This option would cruise through the basics really well, but I would hunt around and try to get it for a bit closer to 600 even if you could. This is not the best value, or the best anything, really. It should be an all around decent experience while you're trekking it between classes, though.

Overall, if you want something new in either camp, just try and stretch whatever money you have to get something with an ssd, decent keyboard, and a nice screen. You can get those three things at relatively low prices, just hunt around. The market is in a bit of a twist right now.

https://laptoping.com/cpus/product/intel-core-i5-1035g1/ <-- CPU review for reference.
If your in the US this would probably be really good for college and software engineering. It has a full HD screen and 8 hour battery life (Charger is pretty small to carry if needed) a fingerprint sensor built into part of the touchpad for easy unlocking. I believe the "G" in the name refers to it having beefier integrated graphics than the non G lines. It's $50 more than what they want to spend but would probably be a very good fit in my recommendation.
