You are aiming a little high for your budget, even for a refurb.
Look for a Lenovo Thinkpad T450 refurbished, it wont game at but it will hit the other things you want such as an SSD(not a large one), an i5(doesn't really mean it's powerful, the whole numbering system doesn't mean anything really on laptops), and within your budget. Keep in mind prices will vary from place to place for a refurb so I can't give you a solid price but it should fall under $400.
Another one you can consider is a Lenovo with an AMD CPU, it should give you a TINY improvement in games. But it has less cores than say a i5-8250U.

Hmm the lenovo IdeaPad 3 is sold out.

Tokyo Chronos is billed as a VR visual novel, 3D models, 3D environments, full head movement. Just in terms of the requirement of a VR headset (although I'm pretty sure there is a non VR version too) it's probably one of the more technically demanding VNs out there.
Edit: As for specs, probably anything over 100 bucks that can run windows 10 will at least get the job done for anything short of, you know, VR. It depends on how important smoothness is for you. A recent i3 or i5 would probably blow any VN out of the water, and that would be in the 3-400 dollar range on the low end?
Personally I went expensive to get something light and portable, but powerful, and got an Asus zenbook 13 for about 800. This is way overkill, but I'm traveling a lot and wanted the built in ten key touchpad for studying.
But you could get something like this for less than half that that would probably play anything you wanted in the VN space.

Is it a Windows install? Could try switching to Ubuntu if not. Sucks about the RAM issues, reverse of what should have happened! Bad luck. I'm guessing removing the new RAM did not help? I have a Yoga sitting in my parts pile that died four months after purchase, so I'm not surprised.
I'm in the US, bought it off of Amazon. I do remember of living overseas and buying electronics, my poor wallet. They do have a ton of different configurations for that model so the price depends on the specs. I just pulled up the exact model: https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Display-Graphics-Keyboard-A515-43-R19L/dp/B07RF1XD36

Here’s what I’ve been using specially for shadow. Besides google chrome and Firefox, it’s the only thing I have installed. It runs sekiro shadows die twice on max graphics without a problem, I can play LoL with 20ms consistently without lag spikes, and it takes about 5 minutes to download a game like Smite through steam. All of this over Ethernet, the 60 dollar package offered by Comcast. Forgot the specs, but just 1 up from the most basic they offer.
Acer Aspire 5 Slim Laptop, 15.6... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07RF1XD36?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I also use it to run R Studio and work remotely. Handles like a dream. Comparable services cost a lot more, time me, and only function for that purpose.

This is not a direct answer to your question but hope it helps anyway. Two months ago I bought the top selling on Amazon laptop named the Acer Aspire 5 slim Ryzen 3 edition with 1080p screen.
https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Display-Graphics-Keyboard-A515-43-R19L/dp/B07RF1XD36/ref=sr_1_2?crid=WBMTRP11QMOG&keywords=aspire+5+slim+laptop&qid=1579710577&sprefix=aspire+5%2Caps%2C166&sr=8-2
It is very versatile as for modding. I swapped out the Windows drive and installed an Intel 512 Gb 660p NVME and installed a 480 Gb Adata SSD in the extra internal space. Then I installed Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. Runs perfectly. Added WINE for some small windows programs I like.
The only caveat I need to make is you need to disable the Secure Boot function in the BIOS to allow testing any live CD or USB test versions you want to try first while as a windows machine and keep the secure boot turned off when installing the final version you prefer. You will make a password for logging into the BIOS. I used the number "1" to keep it simple. The Vivobook made be a secure boot system too.
Hope this was helpful.

Here's one we ordered which just got delivered. We haven't opened it yet because I got our old laptop working again so we may end up returning it. This one has excellent reviews from tech reviewers. Can also double the RAM for a little bit more money.

For general use in this price range I would advise you to check this laptop
laptop name | Acer Aspire 5 Slim --- |---- CPU | Dual core AMD Ryzen 3 3200U GPU | AMD Radeon Vega 3 Mobile Graphics Screen | 15.6" FHD Ram | 4 GB SSD | 128 GB HDD | 0 Weight | 3.97 Lbs. Battery life | 8.5 Hrs. Pros | One of the best bang for the money in the market. Pros | Great battery life . Pros | A FHD IPS screen in this price range is perfect .
I would only recommend that you get another stick of 4GB Ram .

I don't know if you're going to find anything at that price point; you might only find lower-end integrated graphics.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07RF1XD36 is the cheapest I could find that covers the min specs with some buffer room but it's the equivalent of 281£ in the US (when I switch to the UK Amazon site it turns to 600£+ for some reason?)

Thanks.
How bout the Acer Aspire 5 Slim
It's $365 but only missing RAM as it has 4GB. It's the best selling lappy on Amazon. It's a Ryzen 3200U with Vega graphics which should be plenty I'm thinking. Do you know if the RAM is upgradeable?

Not that one. But this one should do the trick. Same CPU, storage and RAM, but cheaper at $323 and with a 15.6" screen and a 3.1 gen 1 port that the motile doesnt have. The RAM is also upgradable as well to boost the performance of the Ryzen chipset too. Another 4GB stick will be less than $20 and there are guides online for how to install it. Both slots are open if you want to upgrade the other, but you will want a new laptop before that becomes an issue. I alao suggest getting another ssd. Something with 256gb should be around $40-50. But a 256gb low profile usb drive for $25-30 for music and movies would work better.
1 points • somuch2win
I know you said your budget is maximum $350 but considering laptops at that price range, there is little to no good options. You didn't mention where you are from so I will show some examples from US market.
I could say get a cheap chromebook or low end laptop and also get geforce now subscription which is 5 bucks a month. As long as you have a decent internet, you can play many games on cheap laptop with it. It will cost less than your budget so you will have money to spare.
I suggest you to get a ryzen laptop as they have better integrated gpu than intel laptops at that price range. This acer aspire 5 laptop and get a 4gb additional ram for 20 bucks. It has a good display, keyboard , case and ryzen cpu. It is little bit over your budget.

this one? https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07RF1XD36
that one looks like it's technically better than than the walmart one since the options for memory are better.
it's big enough for a numeric keypad though which is good or bad depending on preference.

I'm looking for a laptop for my mom who really only needs to browse internet, youtube and use it for music streaming and the occasional word doc. She does not want a chromebook. Do you think this one is a good choice or should I get something like the walmart one that sold out (specs wise) or something else that would be on sale for black friday? ( I was also thinking of the Acer Aspire 5 Slim )
1 points • Havanatha_banana
I'm absolutely not in the US so I'm not the person to say anything, BUT, this thread had been up for a while, so I figured I'll give you some thing to start with.
Currently, all laptops has an inflated price across the world. So, if you're willing to wait, I'm sure you'll be able to find better bang for your buck.
Regardless, the Acer Aspire 5 is the almost no compromise laptop. It has a ryzen 3u, which is as good as it gets with your budget. It has decent keyboard, all the io you need, and most importantly, an upgradable ram slot. Unless you need a graphics card in your laptop, the acer should suffice.
Now that you have your baseline for comparison, go to the second hand market like craiglist and try finding something better lol.
1 points • mariushm
You can buy new laptops with AMD Ryzen processors for around 500-600$. If you were 18, you could probably get a store credit card with 12 monthly rates and 0% interest, and that card would have helped you with your credit score in the future.
There's a cheap and well reviewed Acer Aspire 5 model that sells for 350$ on Amazon : https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Display-Graphics-Keyboard-A515-43-R19L/dp/B07RF1XD36/ It's a good price as it is but you'll definitely want to add an extra 8 GB or 16 GB stick of memory because 4 GB is very low, so that will add around 30-40$ to the price. The SSD inside is a bit on the low side at 128 GB, but that can also be upgradable in the future.
Would you parents be willing to help you out by loaning this much and let you pay 100-200$ a month from what you make from tutoring?
There is also the refurbished laptops routes - decent ones can cost 150-200$ - but those may have weak batteries that will eventually need replacing, or they'll come with mechanical hard drive by default so you'll want to buy a SSD for them anyway, which will slowly raise the cost.
As for a gaming PC, you can build decent gaming PCs for around 1000$. I'd suggest going to LinusTechTips forum (if you're not aware, it's a big Youtube channel) where there's people reviewing your component choices or you can simply state your budget and they'll suggest components for you - you can build your computer yourself, it's fairly easy, more or less like lego.

It’s similar to this one, which I bought from Amazon earlier this year + 4GB add’l RAM for $356. Looks like Costco’s has a more powerful processor.
I’ve been really happy so far. My main complaint is the touchpad isn’t centered, so my hands can’t be either, which feels counterintuitive. It’s a little annoyance that I’m still getting used to - still hitting the wrong keys at times 4 mos later.
