fwiw this one works fine. I tried 2 cheaper models that did not work. I do use a higher output power supply although with just ethernet and a single flash drive it worked fine with supplied adapter

MacBook Pro 16 inch clamshell mode issue with USB-C Hub

I just purchased the 16 inch MBP, as well as this USB-C Hub from Aukey to connect with an ultrawide monitor that I bought as well. In the hub, I connect the USB-C cable from the 96W charger, the HDMI cable connected to the monitor, and the USB-A wired Apple keyboard. So in clamshell mode, when I connect the hub and press on my keyboard to wake it up, it takes some time but eventually it wakes and shows the display on the monitor.

Here's the issue though. Once I login and use it for like 1 to 2 minutes, the laptop sleeps as if its lid was closed, and then I have to type on the keyboard again to wake it up. After logging in, same thing happens after 1 or 2 minutes. The issue disappears when I remove the USB-C power cable and just connect it to a different port on my MacBook, but it kinda sucks that I can't connect everything through one port using the hub. The hub is advertised as capable of handling all the connections I mentioned above (it only limits connecting only 1 external hard drive). My previous MBP was the 13-inch retina Mid 2014 model, so I'm kinda new to the hub/dongle life. For my use case, was I wrong to buy this kind of hub, and should I have gone for something like the CalDigit T3? Any tips for using this MBP in clamshell mode? Any kind of advice/suggestions are appreciated!

Although the top feels like cheap plastic, it’s very budget friendly and has every port I need to use. Fast charging speeds too. https://www.amazon.com/AUKEY-Ethernet-Delivery-Charging-MacBook/dp/B07Z7H3GJK

For mine, yes. My laptop is the Envy ED000, one of the earlier 2020's. I have found to always view the computer documentation, as mine was listed to have a Mini DisplayPort (it did not have it) and was listed to not have a fingerprint reader (it did have it). The chat people were not able to answer to my discrepancies that I saw in the manuals. I proceeded anyway, and it worked out. Which model are you looking at?

Unfortunately, the different standards of USB C have me highly confused. I do know that I can run this adapter. Everything works as it should, however I have not tried charging this laptop with the USB C. The manual looks like I would be able to, however.

Haven't even bothered. I did read another post where a guy got his usb-c to work with an external monitor. He had to use something like this. Other people can get monitors to work with the usb-c by plugging in a docking station. So it can work, apparently just not with a direct connection.

This Aukey is what I got

Though price ranges from what ports you actually need. Though i would ignore power pass through because I feel like heat would slow down the process. Imo, that usb c port is more data transferring if anything.

Only con, the cable isn’t removable and it would be flush against the laptop. So it might hang depending on how you use it.

Yea, maybe something like this adapter would work. It's more like a dock than a hub. I could also avoid buying a new monitor since I already have an HDMI unit that works fine. Still. Desk clutter. Trying to avoid that if I can.

Pretty much any usb hub I guess? I’m using the same I have for my laptop: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07Z7H3GJK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_zh6.Eb4KYZ4KE, works just fine.

I am basically using something like this as a hub.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07Z7H3GJK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_dlC_WmcXFbV0GCEN3

If I connect to my portable monitor (though hub) with only HDMI = no touchscreen on monitor

If I also connect to monitor with a USB-USB-C cable (through USB port on hub) = touchscreen works.

Does that make more sense?

So it's not quite apples to apples, but I'm using this guy. I connected it to my Samsung note and used Dex. Then ran Shadow and had very little issues. My only issues actually came from the wireless mouse stopping movement. It wasn't a lag or anything, it just flat out stopped like it was hitting a wall. I'd have to wait a few seconds, move the cursor in the opposite direction and then I could freely move again. It lasted about 5 minutes and then cleared up but I'll try again tonight with a wired mouse.

Yet another docking question (this one for A485)

So, I can see that there are a bunch of threads about a dock for the latest set of thinkpads (starting from the xx8x's), but I found them a bit too overwhelming. So here I am hoping for some inputs that could get me started.

I was hoping for something in the sub $50 (preferably sub $40) range that can support some peripherals and a monitor. Given the price, of course Lenovo's docks are out of the picture. Further, it's known that Thunderbolt is Intel territory, so I have to keep that in mind while purchasing. It appears there are more interfaces that can be connected through USB-C (like DisplayLink and DisplayPort, not sure if they're the same).

So far, the best options seem to be among (EDIT: Formatting):

Thanks in advance for the help.

P.S. While we're at the topic, could someone tell me if the area around the usb-c port with "thunderbolt" serves any purpose apart from for the Lenovo dock? If not can it be covered with something to avoid dust?

Does anyone else notice a significant lag when using a monitor through the USB-C port? I have this USB-C hub that outputs hdmi as well as mouse/keyboard connected and notice SIGNIFICANT lag on the whole device as soon as I connect it.

The odd thing is I have a Pixelbook that uses the same hub with no problem whatsoever - no lag and everything is snappy. So I don't think the hub is the problem - unless it's just general compatibility with the surface specifically, but I don't know why that would be... It's a well-reviewed, name-brand hub... Just curious what other people's experiences are.

I have a Duet and found something interesting with their Aukey USB C recommended hub. To clarify, it's this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07Z7H3GJK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I tried the hub with the stock charger/cord and I got a "low power adapter" warning. The ethernet lights were blinking, but the OS wasn't connecting via ethernet. I plugged it into a RavPower 65W USB C PD with a USB C cord. Bingo, fixed the lower power warning and ethernet worked like a charm. Down further I mention trying two other docks. I tried using the higher power PD charger with them, but no ethernet on those.

I like this one because it has LAN as well (my previous one didn't, and this machine can definitely utilize it for gaming). Has worked nicely with my G14.

This was happening to me a lot! I have a gigabit connection and was using ATT's 5268AC's hardware for my wifi. I could not understand what was going on since my chromecast was literally right next to the gateway. I ended up just switching to an ethernet connection and this helped and I was getting 120 mbs on the chromecast but even still some apps say they cannot connect. I called Google support and ended up finding it was something about the connection with the Gateway since those apps I was having trouble opening would work just fine if I made my phone a hotspot and connected to it. Google support suggested setting UPNP on on the Gateway. The thing was that ATT had this locked down so that you cannot change these settings. I ended up getting a TP link AX1800 router and set up the 5268AC in bridgemode. Now UPNP is enabled and I am getting 300+ mbs on the chromecast yet there are still some apps like NeverThink and Pluto TV that still will not open saying they cannot connect. I called ATT again and they are sending me a new gateway since the 5268AC was a 2017 model. I'll keep you posted if this solves my problem. This has been fun let me tell ya haha.

Btw you can use the app "Analiti" to do a speed test and if you need an ethernet connection to the chromecast this worked for me:

I haven’t tried thunderbolt 3 docks because of the aforementioned issue when just charging the book. Stick with a normal usb type c 3.1 dock and you should be just fine. Make sure it has PD charging. I currently just use these hubs to act as docks.

-AmazonBasics USB-A 3.1 10 port hub 65 W (20V/3.25A) (use this for my usb crypto miners and Fgpa crypto mining board)

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B076YN6CSG?ref=ppx_pt2_dt_b_prod_image

-UGreen Usb-c hub 9 in 1 adapter with Ethernet, 4K HDMI, VGA, GB Ethernet, usb 3.0 type A x 3, Sd card reader, PD Charging

***hands down my fav. It says it’s for MacBook Pro Air, which is thunderbolt type-c if I am correct..... but it’s works fantastic with this.

https://www.amazon.com/UGREEN-Multiport-Ethernet-Charging-Compatible/dp/B07YFWL4HP/ref=redir_mobile_desktop?ie=UTF8&psc=1&ref_=ya_aw_od_pi

-Aukey 8 in 1 usb type C Hub... essentially same exact specs as the Ugreen above minus the VGA ****this one is iffy. It has a cheap feel to it but has nicer features like alarms and breakers built in but it says its usb type c female port is 100W PD charging 100W... that’s rated as Thunderbolt 3... but doesn’t provide nearly that much power. It has issues powering a single external hdd (wd mypassport) that my freaking old Samsung Galaxy s4 phone could charge and operate. So I’m not sure. I use this one more with another old hp laptop using a type A female adapter into a 3.0 USB port. But it works okay........

I'm also using this Aukey USB-C hub, though I haven't tested video/Ethernet as of yet, I can confirm that the USB hub and card readers work, and power pass-through from an Aukey charger.

I also have a RavPower charger I have yet to plug in to test. I'm curious if it will have enough juice to pass through the hub.

What's "the highest speed"?

A quick search ("usb c ethernet power delivery") on amazon gives plenty of options starting at $20.
I'd recommend spending a little more, $35 - $40, for one of these:

You don't need any of that stuff. Nice to have, but not necessary.

Get a hub like any of these (depending on your needs/wants):

https://www.amazon.com/AUKEY-Ethernet-Delivery-Charging-Chromebook/dp/B07Z7H3GJK/

https://www.amazon.com/Anker-Adapter-Reader-MacBook-Chromebook/dp/B07H4VQ4BZ/

https://www.amazon.com/QGeeM-Ethernet-Delivery-Portable-Compatible/dp/B07XKRGQQ2/

Use your wired peripherals, Ethernet, SD/microSD, 3.5mm, HDMI out etc.

When using my DeX Station, I just use the speakers/mics on the phone. They sound surprisingly good.

As for why it's better, because some apps can't run in DeX on Windows (I believe Netflix, for example), there are limits to how many apps you can run at once, the "frame rate" is terrible (it's jittery and "laggy"), and the resolution is blurry rather than a proper FHD or higher output as mentioned.

You can also use your phone as a phone still while using DeX, effectively giving you a "second screen," otherwise the phone screen will simply turn off, although you can also choose to use the phone screen as a keyboard/touchpad.

Has anyone tried a Dell WD19 Dock with their Thinkpad (specifically an X1 Extreme Gen 2)?

Hello all,

My quest to find a decent dock for my Thinkpad has been fruitless so far. I have tried the following so far:

j5Create USB-C Docking Station:

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/j5create-usb-type-c-triple-display-docking-station/6357396.p?skuId=6357396

Aukey 8-in-1 Hub:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07Z7H3GJK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

VAVA 8-in-1 Hub:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07QQ11BP6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Dell WD15 Dock (may not be this exact model - I have one I brought home from work with the 180W power adapter):

https://www.amazon.com/Dell-Monitor-Adapter-450-AEUO-4W2HW/dp/B01C8PHWQY/ref=sr_1_10?dchild=1&keywords=dell+wd19&qid=1590965552&sr=8-10

CalDigit TS3+:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CZPV8DF/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Omars 5 in 1 Hub:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07NDH6DRN/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Every one of the above had some sort of issue with charging except the Caldigit.

I am using a RavPower 90W USB-C charger for this testing, and it charges the laptop just fine (albeit slowly) - and my power meter shows it feeding anywhere from 75-80W when directly connected to the laptop. This is the charger:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B085FWH399/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The Omars hub was actually purchased to use with an older Chromebook as a hub (didn't intend to use it for PD). It is rated for 60W, and I have seen it actually charge the Thinkpad occasionally - but it is hit or miss. I have a USB-C power meter that actually showed it passing about 75W at one point today, but I haven't been able to replicate that since that data point. It works well otherwise.

All of the other USB-C hubs passed absolutely nothing (or less than 5W) according to my meter. This is also true without the meter in place (just making sure that the meter isn't somehow interfering with the charge capability).

The CalDigit has been the only one that actually charged the laptop, but it had MAJOR issues with the monitor connection - monitor would frequently drop out and come back in about 10 seconds, or not come back at all. I have returned all of them (except the Omars).

The Dell WD15 works just fine and is reliable as a connection to my monitor, keyboard, etc. It just doesn't charge the laptop - no indication of charging at all - not even a warning about slow USB charging. When I connect its USB-C connector to the laptop through my USB-C power meter, it doesn't even switch to 19-20V - it stays at 5v, and shows 0 power flow.

I just wondered if anyone had tried using a Dell WD19 and if it charges their Thinkpad. I am willing to give that one a shot, as I think it is a newer model of the WD15, and their documentation says that it should charge non-Dell laptops at 90W. If this was true I would be very happy to try it, but I just wanted to know if any redditors out there had any experience with it!

Thanks!
