I mean you could try other USB ones, but it seems like you need a better antenna, and all the ones on USB are kinda the same. A lot of wifi cards come with wired antennas that are generally stronger, like this. https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-PCE-AC55BT-B1-Wireless-Bluetooth/dp/B0713RRZMB/ref=mp_s_a_1_8?dchild=1&keywords=wifi+adapter+for+pc+asus&qid=1588346713&sr=8-8

I use this in my rig and I have no complaints: https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-PCE-AC55BT-B1-Wireless-Bluetooth/dp/B0713RRZMB

After I install Windows, there's a few things I do like enabling High Performance mode in the Windows Power Options, and disabling all of the telemetry/tracking etc. You can use one of the various tools designed to do that. Don't forget to enable XMP in the BIOS when you get a chance.

That looks like a decent card and TP-Link is generally decent quality. This card might be an alternative to look at. I have one the bluetooth range is great and it has good transition and reception for wifi.

Do you think this PCI card will fit?

Question two: The blue slots are giant, this is only going to fill a tiny bit of the slot, is that the way it was intended?

If you don’t want to get a motherboard with WiFi built in, just get a pce card. I got this blue tooth/ WiFi PCE card that works well. Now my computer has blue tooth too!

ASUS PCE-AC55BT

Also, when doing your build, keep your space cleaned and keep all your boxes. Store everything in the box that the case comes in for easy storage.

Make sure you know what to do after the build as far as installing windows and drivers. Let us know if you need guidance.

For the wifi card I’m getting this for a friends build soon which was about $30 so this would be good. For the motherboard really anything b450 with an updated bios, there are a bunch around a $100 so this ends saving you about $60. I actually have the same motherboard in your list but got it for $135 about a year ago so I don’t know if maybe the price will go down in the future. One little thing if you do end up going with the motherboard in your list is the Bluetooth for me isn’t very reliable but the wifi works great with fast speeds.

Preface: Not an expert by any means. If anything, I'd wait until someone else comments

I have this card right now, and it's been working great for me. It's also on sale (if you're in the US) My room is the furthest one from the router (2nd floor other side of the house) and it's been a life saver. The included movable antenna is great if you have the space.

Note that a lot of the reviews on Amazon talk about driver issues, but I literally had no problem at all there. I plugged it in and it got going on my msi b450m gaming plus right away. Good luck!

Oh. Yeah in that case get an AC1200 card or something, like this. Usually AC1200 PCIe cards have Intel AC 7260s in them - the ones that don't have massive heatsinks. There are Windows 7 drivers for AC 7260s (and a bunch of other older Intel chips), though of course you can get any WiFi adapter with Windows 7 drivers - whether it's USB, PCIe or PCI.

I don't know if you know this, but you can upgrade your computer to Windows 10 for free. I understand that some people want to stick to W7 though.

$90 seems a bit excessive, I'm currently using this guy and it's been rock-solid. I've used some decent USB ones as well, but they'll never be quite as fast as a PCIe card and there are certainly some bad ones out there, so you have to sift through the products more carefully.

Wifi is a premium feature in a desktop machine.

The Asus PCE-AC58BT, which is using an Intel AC 9260 mPCIe card in an adapter, should work just fine for you. It supports 802.11ac and Bluetooth 5.0.

If you don't mind occupying a PCIe slot, I went with this about a year ago and have no complaints. It's a bluetooth/wifi card by Asus, $35. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0713RRZMB/ref=cm_sw_r_em_apa_i_HqPyFbW90WZV3

Edit: I have the buds+ and I didn't notice any lag in videos while using them but I only used them once or twice for video on my computer, I mainly use them with my phone or music on my pc.

They plug into the smaller PCI-e slots underneath where the GPU goes. They'll have a back port for access (next to where the monitor connections on your GPU are) for the antenna.

Something like this, although not necessarily that model - that was just from a quick google search for illustration purposes.

Here ya go. Get that Antenna as high up and as far away from metal as possible. Try doing speed tests with the antenna to find the best possible spot for it. May double sided tape it down if the antenna is in a spot where the wires may pull it down. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0713RRZMB/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_LurlEb4STPHSP

I bought this a little while back.

It's in the same room as the WIFI ~~and it will require power from the power supply for it to work~~ and it'll need to be connected to an internal USB header for the Bluetooth to work.

I'm not the person you're replying to, but I've used this one pretty frequently with decent success. It's a touch long in the tooth by today's standards: no AX Wi-Fi, no Bluetooth 5, AC speeds only up to about 800 Mbps over 5 GHz, etc. But it's reliable enough, and that's about all you can hope for.

You could just get a motherboard with built-in WiFi if you don't already have one picked out.

Besides that, Asus has a good $35 WiFi/Bluetooth card that I've used in several builds and has worked well. As long as your motherboard has a spare PCIe slot, you should be good.

I've always found USB-based solutions unreliable.

Why don't you get a PCIe-based wireless networking card (like this or this) that will give you both WiFi and Bluetooth.

r/buildapc • comment
1 points • GrassSoup

An alternative way to get WiFi is to use a router in bridge mode. That should allow you to connect via an ethernet cable. Bridging a connection with a laptop or Raspberry Pi may also work, but I assume it may be a little less responsive.

If you're buying a full ATX board, there should be enough slots to use an add-on board. But for me, when the price starts hitting $40-50 for one, a router (or a Pi) starts to look more attractive. (This one by ASUS seems to come with a Bluetooth adapter, so that makes it more attractive. But your board seems to have BlueTooth 5.0.) Here's a 802.11ax PCIe card with BlueTooth 5.0.

Yeah, this are 801.11ac units and your card is 802.11n, older standard. You will do much better with AC adapter.

There are plenty of options there:

Or the Fenvi cards, which are just PCIe adapters with Intel WiFi cards in them.

I had literally this exact problem a while back with a cheap Realtek-based USB dongle. Would be great for regular use, but ping would shoot up wildly to over 500ms every few minutes, making gaming impossible.

My solution, sadly, was to buy a better WiFi card. Some chipsets (especially Realtek USB devices) are just not well supported on Linux and have only the most basic functionality sorted out. ASUS makes a PCI-e 4x card that's basically a mini PCI-e slot with an Intel NIC in it, and it works REALLY well. I have three, all chugging along in Linux boxes. Costs maybe 40 or 50 bucks, but it's worth it if wired isn't an option. Also includes Bluetooth if that's your jam.

I believe it's this one: https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-PCE-AC55BT-B1-Wireless-Bluetooth/dp/B0713RRZMB.

If PCI-e isn't possible for you, I have successfully used TP-Link branded USB dongles before, but the last one I had stopped at 2.4ghz wireless N so I can't comment on their newer 5ghz AC-capable stuff. If possible, find something with either an Intel (don't know if they do USB) or Atheros chipset and do some googling to ensure it's fully supported and works well.

Try a PCE based Asus card. Some people say it gives much better results.

I can link you the same if you want.

I was worried about the same problem so asked people here if i should go for a Motherboard with ON board wifi or PCI based options, i think you just need to invest in something on the higher grade for PCI options.

Setting up my first rig in 17 years! It seems my board only has 2 USB headers. I've used both for the case USB and card reader. I ordered this wifi adapter and it needs a USB header to power the Bluetooth function.

My question is can I plug it into com1 so it can be powered or should I use a USB header splitter?

If your two machines are running windows, there is an option in the control panel that allows you to bridge off an internet connection from one adapter to another. This means that you can have your internet connection coming from one machine, let's say from WiFi, and you can bridge the WiFi connection to another machine using the ethernet adapter on the same system. Of course, connection to your router doesn't just come out of nowhere. It sounds like the only network adapters on your two systems are the single ethernet ports. So you connect the two machines using both of your only network adapters, you just can't connect them to another device such as your router. For this, you're going to need another network adapter in one of your machines. If you would prefer to connect one of the machines to ethernet, you'll need a wired network expansion card like this (Make sure to get the card with the connectors right for your motherboard. The most common nowadays is PCI Express). But if you are able to get a wired connection at that point, I would just recommend getting a network switch like this. You'd probably get better speeds. If you prefer to go the WiFi route, get a wireless network card, like this one.

It seems to affect dual boot systems too. The Intel AX200-based cards are all having problems with Linux booting up at any time. If you don't need Linux, uninstall it and reinstall the drivers for this card.

If you're not hard-set on AX wifi cards (no real need at the moment), you should get more stable performance from AC1200 from ASUS or AC3100 from ASUS, depending on your budget.

Otherwise, AX seems to screw with dual boot machines for the moment.

    1. You need case fans. Grab these; the stock fan configuration for the Meshify C is garbage. It only shines when full.
    1. Don't buy motherboards for integrated Wifi/Bluetooth alone. You can buy PCIe Wifi/Bluetooth cards for $40 or less. Unless you can name some other particular feature about this board that you care about that isn't present on other B550 motherboards, I highly advise getting this and this. Moreover, it seems all the B550 boards are backordered anyway.
    1. PSU appears to be backordered. Unfortunately, they all are, so I can't help with that.

No problem!

  1. You’ll need a WiFi adapter to connect the PC to WiFi. You can get a decent one that’s reasonably priced like this one on Amazon, Newegg, B&H, etc.

  2. I think the MSI monitor will come with both a DisplayPort cable and an HDMI cable. You’ll definitely want to hook the PC up via the DisplayPort output on the GPU, that way you can take advantage of GSync, which currently only works with FreeSync monitors when connected via DisplayPort.

  3. There’s several good build guides on YouTube, but this one, this one, and this one are good places to get started. I hope this helps!
