Thank you. Now the issue is with the phone. I had a voice subscription with Comcast as well. I purchased this ARRIS SURFboard SB8200 DOCSIS 3.1 Gigabit Cable Modem, Approved for Cox, Spectrum, Xfinity & others, (white) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DY16W2Z/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_i2HJEb32F77GK and hope that my voice plan is compatible.

Aka it’s going to be a long weekend.

This one is one their list, and it's an Arris SURFboard so it's going to last a while and not need random reboots, etc. to keep it up.

This is what I bought back in November

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07DY16W2Z/

So far there have been two times where my internet stopped working and Comcast tried blaming my modem.

I don't think it's necessarily a bad modem...

Get a docsis 3.1. Even if you don’t need it for the speeds, you have more channels, which will give you more stability and future proof. Assumes no budget either. Else get a different arris modem

Arris SB8200 on Amazon

Was #1 on Amazon when I bought about a month ago. I've had no complaints and consistently seeing 170 up to 200 mbps on my 150 mbps plan. Yes it's a bit pricey but worth it.

I always used mine and this the latest that I upgraded to. I saw 813mbps on it on my 1000mbps service. I suspect my in hooves cables are suspect preventing me to reach it full potential.

You will need a modem that can handle it, docsis 3.1 https://www.amazon.com/ARRIS-SURFboard-Approved-SB8200-Frustration/dp/B07DY16W2Z

As far as router, I wont touch asus products ever again. Not sure how much you are willing to spend or if you want to "learn" some of the basics. Unifi dream machine or USG + access points. I have also had good luck with Linksys equipment.

hmm.. i'd be skeptical that it's the "only one" rated for gig, as I have cable provided gig service with one of these and there are at least 3 others that i know work for gig services. Anything docsis 3.1 should be rated for cable gig services.

If you were willing to rent a modem at $14 a month, then I feel no guilt in spending your money for you.

Your old modem is an older, combo WiFi unit. Not good enough.

Get an SB8200 DOCSIS 3.1 modem. Double check to make sure it is on your ISP's compatibility list:

https://www.amazon.com/ARRIS-SURFboard-Approved-SB8200-Frustration/dp/B07DY16W2Z

It literally pays for itself in 11 months, and can handle your new speeds and more.

This is what I did a month ago:

Purchase your own equipment if you haven't already. Get a modem and a router (any with good reviews on Amazon should do) If you want the 600 Mbps or greater plan you'll have to get a DOCSIS 3.1 modem, but if you want the 400 Mbps or lower plan you can save money by getting a DOCSIS 3.0 modem that supports that speed. If you want a recommendation I purchased the ARRIS SURFboard SB8200 and it works flawlessly.

Call customer service to disconnect. When you get ahold of someone tell them you're going to prison and you need your services disconnected asap. I'm not joking when I say this, I had the call completed in under 15 minutes.

This next step can take either a few hours or a few days. At least two hours after you disconnect your service you should be able to sign up as a new customer online. You can use all the same contact and billing info as your previous account and it will work. They even linked my service to the same Comcast account as my old plan. Connect your new equipment and activate it. You might have to call customer service to get your modem activated, they make it difficult for customer owned equipment on purpose. Just going to xfinity.com/activate should work otherwise.

Return your old equipment to the nearest UPS or Comcast store/service center. If you chose to get their free Flex streaming box, which you should, they'll ship a return label for your old equipment and a box to put it in. It's even prepaid for at home pick up.

As always your milage may vary but this info has been gathered from multiple threads on this subreddit over the years. Good luck on your Comcast journey!

They have a PDF that I can't link here. Before you go out and buy your own equipment please for the love of all that is holy don't try and cheap out on stuff like this. DOCISIS3.0 8x4 channel is junk plain and simple. The stuff that Comcast gives people on the low end is basically this https://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-Cable-Modem-Router-Combo/dp/B078FBC499?ref_=fsclp_pl_dp_1&th=1 but with Xfinity branding on the side instead of Netgear. However, even that is being phased out in favor of their XB6 and XB7 for people that get 600mbps and higher.

If you are gonna buy your own equipment don't take a step backward and I highly encourage you to get a modem that is DOCSIS 3.1 capable. A good example is the SB8600 https://www.amazon.com/ARRIS-SURFboard-Approved-SB8200-Frustration/dp/B07DY16W2Z/ref=sr_1_4?crid=2JQPP44XOWGKZ&dchild=1&keywords=sb8600&qid=1595727582&s=electronics&sprefix=SB86%2Celectronics%2C133&sr=1-4

As far as a router try and budget for something that supports at least 802.11 AC(AKA Wifi 5). You can get really good ones for like $120-$180 range.

Lastly, I will just say that you really should get 100mbps internet in today's day in age(or better). The only people that should be rocking 25mbs are those that are on prepaid(in which case you don't rent) or those on internet essentials program for $10 a month. I say this because 25/3 is rough for anything outside of simple streaming and school work. That assumes one person. To give some perspective lets take a look at gaming for a sec. Your average PC game nowadays on Steam is running anywhere between 20-50 Gbs in size. Triple-A titles like Borderlands 3 are 100+. For that 20Gb game(or file in general) you are looking at waiting 2 hours about and that is assuming ideal conditions. A 100mb connection cuts that down to just 30 mins. That is a big difference in terms of performance for what amounts to a negligible difference in cost. As they say time is money and that time adds up fast. Cause lets also be real most people got other bandwidth-consuming tasks going on in the house like my PC downloading a game while I stream Netflix type a deal.

Sorry for the book I just strongly believe what your about to do is foolish and will come to bite you in the butt if you do decide to upgrade down the road

Thanks. I missed this until now. Yes, it's 2.4ghz now I check and wireless N. It's like the connection drops for 30 seconds causing the robotic voice, then will be perfect for 4 hrs.

I don't get what you mean by connect to network. You mean wifi or hardline? We do connect directly for zoom.

How can I increase upload speed? Same solution as getting a new router/modem?

Which would you pick (I'll stick with combo due to lack of space), this

ARRIS SURFboard SB8200 DOCSIS 3.1

($130 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DY16W2Z/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_JWdqFbH14WTS0)

Or ARRIS SURFboard SBG8300 DOCSIS 3.1

$299 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07M9J3XW2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_H0dqFbB98MC08

The lower price tempting, but not if I'll be in same boat. I upgraded my speed already to 200mbs from 75.

1 what speed tier are you paying for? 2 what speeds are you getting on ookla 3 are these speeds comparable 4 plug pc in and test again 5 if speeds are not up to the tier you are paying for you have a service issue, if they are up to what your paying for and you are experiencing issues, then you need to upgrade

I'd highly recommend using your own modem and router combo. It's a bit expensive at the first time but you're not going to be paying monthly and you will have better coverage My recommendations for modem and router modem router

  1. Buy your own modem.
    https://www.amazon.com/ARRIS-SURFboard-Approved-SB8200-Frustration/dp/B07DY16W2Z/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=docsis+modem&qid=1599691506&sr=8-3

  2. Buy your own Wireless Access Point, separate from said modem. https://www.amazon.com/Ubiquiti-Networks-802-11ac-Dual-Radio-UAP-AC-PRO-US/dp/B015PRO512

  3. Install / mount said WAP high as you can, preferably on a ceiling.

  4. Connect both devices to a UPS, cheap is ok
  5. Test for two weeks
  6. If issue is not resolved, nag your cable internet provider to replace the copper coax cable feeding into your home.

These steps should resolve most quality of life issues cable internet users experience, beyond "my son is hogging all the bandwidth".

16-24 is probably a reference to the downstream channels.

Like this - ARRIS SURFboard (16x4) DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem, approved for Cox, Spectrum, Xfinity & more (SB6183 Black) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01ITIXYR0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fabc_z3uXFbHS4RGHJ

I’d check with your cable ISP for the proper and approved modem.

If you have a gigabit plan with your cable operator you’ll need something like this:

ARRIS SURFboard SB8200 DOCSIS 3.1 Gigabit Cable Modem, Approved for Cox, Xfinity, Spectrum & others https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DY16W2Z/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fabc_G4uXFbS6FYEZX?psc=1

Just finished reading all their documentation and it is the "router" piece of the puzzle (it's actually a hardware firewall, router, managed switch and access point.)

If you're looking for only a modem, I'd buy the Arris SB8200 https://www.amazon.com/ARRIS-SURFboard-Approved-SB8200-Frustration/dp/B07DY16W2Z/ref=pd_lpo_147_t_1/138-0221786-3703523?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B07DY16W2Z&pd_rd_r=d49bf600-db58-401d-9091-9566f4394909&pd_rd_w=OpJDO&pd_rd_wg=j3VfU&pf_rd_p=7b36d496-f366-4631-94d3-61b87b52511b&pf_rd_r=AQ91SBRTB6XRE0YFF5S9&psc=1&refRID=AQ91SBRTB6XRE0YFF5S9

Also, you Netgear router has something with the software that prevents higher speeds that I found with mine and when I installed DDWRT on it that fixed it to where I could speeds around 800Mbps down and 45up.

The modem is onsale right now on Amazon for 149.00 and is at BestBuy for 169.00

Buy this: ARRIS SURFboard SB6190 DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem, Approved for Cox, Spectrum, Xfinity & others (Black) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06ZZGXJKM/

Or this if you have a plan over 400Mbps:

ARRIS SURFboard SB8200 DOCSIS 3.1 Gigabit Cable Modem, Approved for Cox, Xfinity & others, (white) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DY16W2Z/

Then buy this:

Amazon eero mesh WiFi router https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07WGJ8ZD3/

The EERO has SQM QOS which will help with the anemic upload speeds Comcast gives you, reducing gaming ping when other people are streaming Netflix.

Then if you need more WiFi, make sure you wire them together for best results. But mesh is fine.

After re-reading your Original Post, I can see I should have asked about which router you have?

Like most other Optimum prisoners, I have had issues with their equipment and was much happier to have better equipment + not pay extra fees each month. I upgraded from 300 MB to 1 GB due to family members moving into my home / needing to work from home. I originally bought the Arris 6183 when I had 300 MB plan.

ALL DOCIS 3.0 modems that operate on the Puma 5,6,7 software have a glitch that causes latency issues. Avoid Arris 6190 and others that run on that. I bought the Arris 6190 prior to knowing this and returned it because I had tremendous latency issues and had to reset all the time. I exchanged it for the 8200. The latency is incredible. The DOCSIS 3.1 is a game changer for me. Even on a lower tier plan where the capacity may be overkill, the latency is unreal.

My Plan: 1 GB--> Coax

My router: Linksys AC3000

My Modem: Arris 8200

Your current modem is one of those ISP modem-router-switch combos. As such, I'd recommend you replace it, especially if you're getting a new router. For a modem, I'd recommend something like an Arris SURFboard SB6183 or if you wanted to future-proof, an Arris SURFboard SB8200. For a router, the Nighthawk R7000 would do fine.

I recently paid $140 for a Netgear CM1200. It's nice, and it does a good job, but frankly it's overkill.

Here is a refurbished CM1000 for $130.

And here is an Arris SB8200 for $125.

If you don't need DOCSIS 3.1, here is an Arris SB6183 for $40.

Modem depends on your Internet speed. I'm also assuming you are NOT using Xfinity ViOP (there are modems that include ViOP functionality but they cost more). If you have gigabit speed you will want this (this is what I use in my house, bought via Amazon Warehouse). If you have 600 mb or less, this will do.

I'm not super familiar with consumer WiFi routers (I run a UniFi setup in my house) but this is what I bought for my parents. It works great and they don't need any fancy features so it fits the bill.

r/OPTIMUM • comment
1 points • thegrif

Why not just move forward with your own equipment? If 1GB service is available in your area, get a DOCSIS 3.1 modem and then call and have them provision it. I'd recommend pairing it with a UniFi Dream Machine for routing wifi. Depending on the size of your home, you can also add additional access points (the FlexHD APs are nice).

Yeah DOCSIS 3.1 is the latest standard available for consumers, pretty much every cable company is at 3.1 now (these changes take years, so it's not a yearly type of thing). I mean, older modems still work obviously, my SB6183 still does (DOCSIS 3.0) and yours with Comcast. But if you rent from Comcast now, they'll send you a DOCSIS 3.1 modem regardless (actually a "gateway" combo) called either X6 or X7. If the modem costs $10 per month to rent (I have no idea now, but for me it was around $8), it's worth it to buy if you plan to stay with Comcast for 2 years+. The SB8200 is around $150 right now but can be cheaper (Coronvirus made all electronics a bit more expensive or not-stocked right now). But if you want a cheaper option for now, I'd go with the SB6183.

Router wise you want it to be MU-MIMO & at least rated WiFi 5 (newest is WiFi 6); this is like a easy way to identify with protocols it uses. But remember, hard-line (Ethernet) will always be better than WiFi.

So for budget minded setup. I would go for the SB6183 and router something like the ASUS RT-AX3000.

https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-RT-AX3000-802-11ax-Lifetime-Whole-Home/dp/B084BNH26P/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8

All together, it would be around $200.

Google WiFi has been really solid for me for the last \~5 years and it has built in prioritization for Stadia. I have 2 nodes covering 1800 sqft almost flawlessly, positioning could be a little better.

https://store.google.com/us/product/google_wifi

Generally all of the new mesh routers are pretty good, I think Orbi is the next best but haven't tried it myself. It has more premium features but also a more premium price tag.

For cable modems, I've been using the SB8200. Its been pretty good can't really complain, handles Stadia and multiple other streams well. I do have to reset it about once a month but I bought a cheap TP Link smart plug to reset it on a schedule once a week and its been flawless since. It does need \~5 mins after losing power before it will power back on correctly. Less than that and the startup sequence fails for some reason.

https://www.amazon.com/ARRIS-SURFboard-Approved-SB8200-Frustration/dp/B07DY16W2Z

Again, I think Netgear is the next best option here, I haven't tried it myself but the CM1000 to CM2000 models look good.

Whatever you get you'll want to make sure it is a DOCSIS 3.1 modem, not necessarily for the extra speed but for the additional channels that let you have multiple streams going without them cannibalizing each other.
